Gearing Up for Krukow’s *Zito Defense*

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 27, 2011

Kruk’s KNBR Show hits the airwaves in a little less than an hour (usually around 7:30). He’ll be in full Zito-Defense Mode. Here are my guesses for some of the sh!t he’s gonna throw against the wall:

1) Zito was pitching well out of the wind up, it was only when he went into the stretch that he had a problem

2) His WHIP was actually quite good, only giving up 6 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings

3) He only found out he was pitching 90 minutes before the game. We should be honoring his *gamership*, not condemning the results

4) The wind was blowing out

5) The Phillies LU is outstanding, they hit everybody

Well, those are my top 5 guesses. His analysis will probably include these 5 as well as 20-30 more. The real fact is this: Zito is poison to this team. He always puts our guys on their heels by giving up a 4 or 5 spot early on. This deflates the bats and gives the opposing pitcher a ton of free confidence to go after a LU that really needs all the help it can get to begin with…..

I hope Timmy feels better today…….

Zito should be retired and then hired as a cook for Peter McGowan. He can Zen himself away from the Giants for good.

Don’t know what all the angst is about. Zito pitching badly is actually a good thing if you want to get rid of him. If he pitches well you’re all in knots worrying they will keep him around for the postseason.

I’ll throw some silver lining out there. Zito pitching game one was actually a good thing because the Phillies were just itching to tear into the G’s for bleeping them last yr. The Phillies get it out of their system, Zits goes away and now we can settle down and enjoy some classic 2-1 fare.

  3. Kevin's avatar Kevin said, on July 27, 2011 at 7:49 am

RT is right, if Zito had pitched like last year, pitching just good enough to get him through 2-3 months, then Bochy might have been tempted to use him in the PS. sphincter muscle clench and a shiver down my spine just thinking about it. and yes it gets the revenge factor out of the Phillies system.

Bummer, I only caught the last half of Kruk’s show. Did anyone here his list of excuses that he probably started the show off with?

I didn’t hear any of the show and didn’t read any comments by Zito. So a bit off-topic, did Zito use his standard “I wasn’t focused” excuse again?

  6. willieD's avatar willieD said, on July 27, 2011 at 8:18 am

kuiper isn’t any better. After zito got lit up last time, both were calling each other “apologists” in a sarcastic dig at those who hate on the guy, during a pregame.
SF cannot afford to just dump the guy, so unless he pitches reasonably well he will never be tradeable. Giving up 14 runs in 10 and two thirds, with 5 HRs in the last two outings makes it hard to see silver lining. Funny thing is, Braves Derek Lowe is almost as bad, and makes near Zito money too. Braves have been trying to dump him last two years also, with no takers.
I think Rowand is much more likely to get dealt somewhere, with SF picking up large part of the remaining salary. He can play anywhere in the OF, and I’m sure is confident he could put up better numbers in a different park/division, true of a lot of hitters .
What I want to see is what happens to Vogs on this trip, who will either go in Philly if Lincecum is not up to it yet, or in Cincy bandbox where it will be mid-90s. Bum likes this weather so it won’t bug him, but I want to see how Vogs holds up in these conditions. This guy is in uncharted waters, and I just have a feeling he could unravel as league starts to figure him out.

    I like RoughTrade’s take.

Like many of you, it’s occurred to me we are nearly 2/3 through the season: it’s past time waiting for players to ‘turn it around’ or ‘get it going’. Get the Beltran or Cuddyer trade done, but don’t go for lesser like Carlos Lee. Only then is it worth giving up a Wheeler or somesuch. I don’t buy Baggs’ argument that we need to hold on to Wheeler because we’ll be short on starting pitching in the near-term. I don’t see us letting our 20 year-olds go (Lincecum, Cain, MadBum, but possibly Sanchez), and we can draft anew over the next few years.

You appreciate Boche’s tactical skills when you see others in action: last night Hurdle used his backup catcher to pinch-hit in 11th, so McKenrie had to catch all 18 1/3 innings in Atlanta heat and humidity. Lucky he’s not in the hospital.

Cuts both ways, Ed. So long as some players get hot when it’s necessary (post season, most likely), things’ll be fine. Remember how we felt last year when Pablo never pulled his fat ass out of his slump and Bochy decided to go with Uribe and Renteria on the left side of the IF. Bochy’ll know what he needs, and he’ll know how to use it when the time comes.

News report I just heard has Lincecum going today. Man, if I had doctors to hook up intravenous hydrating tubes and trainers to massage and stretch me out, I think I might be able to tolerate a bad hangover once in a while, and get over it just fine. (And, of course, I have incontrovertible proof that Lincecum received such treatment for his DC hangover yesterday. Irrefutable.) In any event, I’ll bet Lincecum will be motivated if he does go today.

And after last night’s Pit-Atl, game the Braves have to be ramping up the Beltran offer. McCann, without doubt their best hitter, strained an oblique and is going on the DL. They scored 3 runs in the third, and then both teams didn’t score again til braves won it on disputed play in the 19th.
Prado went 0 for 9, avg down to .268, big drop off from what he hit last year. McLouth hit lead off, struck out 3 times and is hitting .230. Heyward is at .222, Uggla .199, the Schafer kid ,240 as back up OF, Alex Gonzalez the SS 0-5 now hitting .225.
On the report about SF having scouts to watch Oakland/Tampa…I watched part of that last night as the A’s pounded Price for 4 runs in 6 innings, in front of announced crowd of 12,000 (looked more like 1200). Upton 0-4, 2 Ks, now batting .227. Other than Zobrist (who homered) and Longoria, who are no doubt untouchable, there’s only Damon, Kotchman and the kid C Jaso. Too bad, because the Rays are more than likely out of it.

Zito will be hamstringing them regardless- I’m sure that Dirrty will get his spot back but seeing that there’s no way they’ll cut bait with Zits, they’ll either have to option or release a reliever who is better than Zit or option a position player, further weakening an already horrendo bench..
It’s possible, I guess, that they discover more problems with the foot…that would be best, then they can activate him in September without having to pitch him…

And here’s this morning’s Beltran shit:
“•Giants starter Jonathan Sanchez could go to the Mets as part of a Beltran trade, tweets Sherman.
•Some executives believe Boras is trying to direct Beltran to the Giants, a team that has the money to retain him after the season, tweets Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Meanwhile Ken Rosenthal tweets that the Rangers are offering the Mets a greater number of players for Beltran than the Giants, who are offering fewer players but more quality.”
Also some talk that they’re trying for Cuddyer but Twinkies undecided on what to do…

Just listened to the Krukow podcast—he wasn’t TOO over the top trotting out excuses, but he did throw some shit at the wall—tough to go on short notice, kept the ball down much better than the start in SD, throw out the first inning and he did alright etc. Plus he hammered the point about the small ballpark + fly ball pitcher is a bad combo.

  15. gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on July 27, 2011 at 9:38 am

No way JSanchez is going to the Mets unless Reyes is in the deal and agrees to a longer term deal. Sanchez for Cuddyer is a more realistic scenario.

But dealing Sanchez now and suffering with Zito is playing with fire and that is not Sabean’s modus operandi…

The speculation was from a NY Post writer, don’t shoot the messenger, boyz…I doubt they get Dirty or Wheeler..
And ESPN now says it’s Giants or Rangers…
Where would he play? Here are the numbers for the current starting 3, since the AS break.
    Nate .233 BA .233 OBP .535 OPS
    Ross .121 BA .225 OBP .467 OPS
    Torres .286 BA .348 OBP .753 OPS
Ross and Nate have both taken a dump, but I’d think they’d hang with Nate longer. Torres hasn’t approached his 2010 but he’s the only tolerable lead off hitter and he has played well since the break. Plus he and Nate are probably the best CF/RF defensive tandem in the league…

Chisox may be in teardown mode once again as Jerry Reinsdorf seems to be getting the financial jitters. Major trade just went down with Toronto. Wonder if Sabean isn’t burning up the phone lines to Chi-town to ascertain what kinda package would be needed to land Carlos Quentin. It appears he is available. Before Zito’s two latest melts, a straight swap of Sanchez for Quentin may have made sense. Now i could see Wheeler going in such a trade. Might take a B prospect or two boot money. Rowand would do okay on the southside. Maybe something like Rowand, Verdugo, Gillaspie would get the job done.

  20. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on July 27, 2011 at 10:00 am

Second thought. As per Rowand going to Chicago, Giants would have to pick up the remainder of his salary for this season as well as that of Quentin.

  21. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 27, 2011 at 10:09 am

I don’t think they have any interest in anyone except Beltran. If that fell through, they’d look for Cuddyer, maybe others. But Quentin is not in the picture at all unless other deals fell through…
    The latest:
“•Beltran is not going to the Rangers, tweets Rosenthal. The Giants are his presumed frontrunner. He says the Mets had asked about Giants prospects Zack Wheeler and Gary Brown. They won’t get Wheeler, but Rosenthal says “we’ll see” on Brown.”

Thanx Pawlie. It really was a humongous letdown, like going to a Broadway show expecting to see Denzel Washington and getting Pauly Shore instead.

At least my daughter had a great time. And it’s a thrill seeing an inside-the-park HR, the second time I’ve seen the Phils get one vs. the Giants. The first came in 2000 at the Vet when a young Bobby Abreu tore around the bases to beat the Giants 2-1 in the bottom of the 10th, an incredibly exciting finish even if the Giants lost.

I’m a bit surprised Sabean blinked and will give up Wheeler. So be it. How soon can Beltran make it to Philly?

  42. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on July 27, 2011 at 11:24 am

Wheeler i could live with more than Brown or Surkamp. Sure hoping the other two are more B- types than anything else. Seems like most of the other teams pretty much dropped out along the way except for Cleveland, which was evidently unacceptable to Beltran and presumably Boras.

The presence of Beltran does put a lot of pressure on him but greatly relieves it for Pablo and Huff, in particular. Nate and Torres may also be uplifted. The entire lineup goes from deeply suspect to suspiciously deep, with at least one outfielder who could go in a trade for a passable catcher. This is probably not the end of the trading, as others have pointed out, but now the big question is what the hell to do with Zito.

Latest info on the deal is that it’s a straight-up for Wheeler, according to Scott Sherman of the NY Post via MLBTR. That sounds far more reasonable a swap than Wheeler-+ . Bit of a gamble for the Mets as Zack is 2-3 years away from ML probability. Giants give up a first-rounder, but IMHO Surkamp is more of a sure bet and could get the call as soon as a September cuppa coffee ~ that is, unless Drrrrty can’t revert to form and the team gets desperate, with the only other possible option being an unnamable guy who should go DFA.

Apparently, because of Beltran’s no trade clause, he cannot join the Giants till 24 hours after the deal is finalized. So unless that happens within the next four hours, he may only play one game vs Philly or simply await the team in Cincinnati. Meanwhile, Philly is offering a pretty hefty package including a couple blue chippers for Hunter Pence. That can happen when you are deep in upper level prospects.

Or, as likely, Bourn is playing into his prime at just 28.
Beltran is a RFer. Interesting to see whether he gets placed in ATT in LF or RF, the RF there obviously would be a challenge to him for a while. I’d put him in LF…
BTW, ‘Bourne” was last seen trying to avoid more wet working for his secret US agency…

If they’re smart, they’ll makeup another phony-baloney injury for the Gamer and put him on the DL. Honestly, I don’t know why other teams wouldn’t be up in arms when a rival blatantly “pulls a fast one.” If I were the Giants and this shit was being done by another team, I’d be calling the League Office for an investigation. Dirrrty didn’t have any arm problems.

Yeah, I misspelled the mole’s name- whatever,he isn’t coming here, thank goodness. Already gave the likely initial configuration- Beltran/Torres/Nate l-to R. I also posted the likely platoon in center a couple days ago. But I hardly rule the Gamer out entirely- there is no OFer whose job is safe- Torres the safest, because he’s still a good lead off hitter, great OFer, and is playing best of the group. Don’t see Belt going down- Mudbug or Burriss. And don’t forget they’ll have to do something with Hall and/or DeRosa soon.

The team knows it can’t afford his bat. Actually, I’ve posted that Fontenot/Kepp is my preference, although the biggest upgrade they could have done was Cuddyer for second base and move Kepp to SS. It would have been a far greater upgrade at a lesser cost. ( presuming he was available) . But I can live with Beltran pending who else they gave up. There are actually some reports that they gave up Wheeler AND Brown. Hope not.

      • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis said, on July 27, 2011 at 12:21 pm

I think with the add of Beltran and hopefully a new C they could afford to hide the Mudbug’s poor bat in the lineup. He’s head and shoulders so much better defensively than anyone else we put at SS. I know the pickings are slim for a upgrade at C, but I hope you’re not eating dinner when they announce the Game 1 lineup for the NLDS…”batting eighth and catching for the Giants, #22, Eli Whiteside. I’ll choke myself…

Beltran in LF creates a Cody/Nate platoon in RF? Or is Ross now the late inning LF Nate used to be? So long as he continues to hit, Nate’s gotta play.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 27, 2011 at 12:30 pm

He’s NOT hitting, but I’m sure they’ll give him a bit longer. It’s pretty amazing, the grip of the cult. He’s at .233 with .233 OBP, .535 OPS since the break. But everybody thinks he’s hitting. A total hoot.

      • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on July 27, 2011 at 12:36 pm

wtf? Nate’s OPS is .839 for July, in 20 games. Also, he has pulled his stats way up for the 2nd and 3rd time he bats in a game. As I posted earlier in the season, those numbers were abysmal. Not bad at all, now. So — he has been hitting. Has he been tapering off since the break? Maybe. If that continues, then we’ll be able to say he stopped hitting. Nothing cultish about it.

      • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on July 27, 2011 at 12:44 pm

And if you want to narrowly focus on the recent past, Crawford, Ross, Sandoval and Fontenot have been worse at the plate than Nate the Neanderthal. That reminds me — dumb idea to force Nate to play LF. His territory is RF. His neanderthal brain comprehends the threats and opportunities out there. In LF, he’ll be confused for months.

“My best guess at playing time, should this happen: Beltran in right field, with Nate Schierholtz platooning with Cody Ross in left. Center field remains an Andres Torres/Aaron Rowand platoon, but now there will be fewer starts for Rowand in left against right-handers.”

  56. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 27, 2011 at 12:38 pm

Here, again, are the numbers for the OFers since the break:

    Nate .233 BA .233 OBP .535 OPS
    Ross .121 BA .225 OBP .467 OPS
    Torres .286 BA .348 OBP .753 OPS
    And in their limited time:
    Gamer .278 BA .278 OBP .944 OPS ( 18 AB)
    Belt .333 BA .385 OBP 1.051 OPS (12 AB)

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis said, on July 27, 2011 at 12:43 pm

The last 7 days doesn’t help with the notion that Nate is hitting. Fact is, if the current regulars, Torres is hitting best, followed by Nate, and Ross, hardly different from since the break. But big fucking deal- I’ve already pointed out that none of their jobs are secure. Beltran will be in there every day, and initially Torres and Nate wil get the next most time.
