Gearing Up for Krukow’s *Zito Defense*

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 27, 2011

Kruk’s KNBR Show hits the airwaves in a little less than an hour (usually around 7:30). He’ll be in full Zito-Defense Mode. Here are my guesses for some of the sh!t he’s gonna throw against the wall:

1) Zito was pitching well out of the wind up, it was only when he went into the stretch that he had a problem

2) His WHIP was actually quite good, only giving up 6 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings

3) He only found out he was pitching 90 minutes before the game. We should be honoring his *gamership*, not condemning the results

4) The wind was blowing out

5) The Phillies LU is outstanding, they hit everybody

Well, those are my top 5 guesses. His analysis will probably include these 5 as well as 20-30 more. The real fact is this: Zito is poison to this team. He always puts our guys on their heels by giving up a 4 or 5 spot early on. This deflates the bats and gives the opposing pitcher a ton of free confidence to go after a LU that really needs all the help it can get to begin with…..

I hope Timmy feels better today…….

Our cleanup hitter just tried to drag bunt for a hit. I’d fucking fine and bench his ass for a week. A cleanup up does NOT bunt no matter WTF is going on. Fuck Huff.

I’d give Nate the first shot behind Beltran. Risk/reward is high and they can flip Pablo and Nate ( or Huff) if it doesn’t work out with Grok after a week orso.

I’ve read so much shiot today, butI thought Bochy already confirmed that it was Beltran/Pablo/Schierholtz going 3-4-5.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 27, 2011 at 4:55 pm

I just said I’d try Nate behind Beltran, not that they were going to. Pablo is the obvious choice, but if Nate actually resumed those MVP ways of his, it would be best. But, hell, Pablo is fine, his young career numbers compare pretty well with Beltran’s.

Good baseball game thus far. Well played on both sides, and Matty is out-dueling Hamels. It’s just night and day the feeling I get watching tonight with the Horse on the hill as opposed to Zito last night. you just know the players feel the same way. I know they’re pros, but it has to mess with ’em a little bit.

Potentially toughest inning of the night for Cain with the 2-3-4 batters up. Giants l.u. is almost totally uninspiring but somehow a couple of unusual suspects combined to give our Horse the lead. Give that big countryboy a lead and he turns into a right miser with it. Pitch count is reasonably close. Can’t count on cruising through any ML lineup, but Matt handled the sixth in fine form.

#60 in the books. No drama in the 9th. Giants score two again tonight, but 2 always trumps one. This team knows how to do those one-run victories. Tops in the Majors in that category. Cain was a marvel this evening. Matt the Horse is a stalwart. Hamels is a tough cookie, but the better man won.

Tonight’s uninspiring lineup managed to eke out another one. Big change tomorrow as Beltran dons the colors of the Halloween Machine. Sabean picks up a serviceable catcher and this bunch would not have to be looking up to the Red Sox or the Evil Empire in October. Aces trump sluggers. Badass Bullpen trumps anyone left standing.

Good for Cain. He pitched like a sumbitch, and gets to chalk up the win on a nice 4 hitter. Easily could have been a shutout, without the error. That’s a tough ass performance in a band box in front of hostiles. POTG. POTG2 shared by Gamer and Nate for the RBIs…

  48. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis said, on July 27, 2011 at 7:02 pm

And I have NO Whitey problem with Beltran coming out and saying he wants to play RF only.
If that’s where he’s most comfortable, accommodate his ass. It’s not like our OF has been set in stone of late. Burriss has played OF fer chrissakes. Carlos instantly becomes our best OFer by far. If he wants to play RF, he plays RF.

Visible from Interstate 80, near Paterson, New Jersey, just outside New York, drivers can see this sign: TENSION ENVELOPES. I’ve always loved the poetry of that company sign, as if to tell folks: hang on, the Big Apple’s electricity awaits you. I relate this because it dawns on me: the Giants play their games within a Tension Envelope (incidentally, Marcel Proust once called the body a tense envelope). (I have a photo to accompany this but do not know how to insert it.). Anyway, another victory achieved within the Tension Envelope. Signed, sealed, delivered.

Nice watching Cain pitch so well so deep into a game again. On Sunday, as we left the park, we saw him getting onto the bus, first Giant out of the clubhouse. He was carrying his baby and walking with his wife. He spent a lot of time putting the baby into a child seat in his car. Then he got onto the bus. Out of uniform, he looks like a big strong guy with a ton of quiet confidence. Nice to see him bounce back tonight. Wonder if the baby noticed.

  55. zumie's avatar zumie said, on July 27, 2011 at 7:50 pm

It’s not so bad for Belt; he’ll be back up in September.
When J. Sanchez comes back, Mota can be sent to Fresno for a few weeks, until September.
Zito and J. Sanchez can battle it out for the #5 spot.

Belt going down gives Huff more rope to suck. He saw a total of 9 pitches in his 4 ABs tonight. He can continue to suck (and he will, this is his “off year.” Not off week, off month or off pre or post All-Star break. Off year) and he’ll continue to get playing time because of his $11M price tag.

Hey, I found something to bitch about even on the day we got Beltran and beat the Phils.
    I still got it.

    • zumie's avatar zumie said, on July 27, 2011 at 8:20 pm

There should be no griping about Huff’s contract. That was a perfectly reasonable contract at the time, given what Huff did last season, and what the Giants did as a team.

      • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis said, on July 27, 2011 at 8:27 pm

Perfectly reasonable? Zumie, I swear you must be on the Giants payroll yourself. The Giants overpaid Huff for what he did (and he did a helluva lot last year) and not what he’s going to do. And it’s showing. In the meantime, just wait til next April. He’ll start swinging again then.

      • zumie's avatar zumie said, on July 27, 2011 at 8:29 pm

Did you say they over-paid at the time? I can’t remember.

  58. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on July 27, 2011 at 7:59 pm

Amazing the things that transpire when you’re the basking World Champs. Beltran wants to make up for that caught looking against the Cards in the NLCS a few years back. Didn’t wanna queer the deal so had not yet checked out Carlos’ stats till just now. WOWWWZA! This guy is an absolute quality hitter. 127 runs produced for the Mets this year with THIRTY doubles and half that number of dingers. His OBP is just under .400 and he has exactly one less walk than strikeouts at 60-61.

Insert that bat up the middle of a challenged lineup and it rubs off on everyone else. Huff will have to shit or get off the pot. No more pressure on him whatsoever so far as any need to be the MAN. Belt getting sent to the Fresnobus means the 1B position is Thongalong’s to hold or lose. Panda too, will get a huge booster shot, whether he bats third or cleanup. Keppinger should revert to the two-hole. He doesn’t have much power but will crack out doubles. Nate bats fifth and should get lots of opportunities. Ross, Rowand and Torres will try to outdo each other in order to get playing time, with Andres probably getting the most appearances. Sabean picks up a worthwhile catcher and suddenly this lineup can do some damage, even if slick-fielding Crawford is manning short.

If Beltran prefers playing RF, we will, as Twin points out, drop off a bit in OF defense. Beltran seems to be the kinda guy, though, that if that position at Phonebill park proves too much for his knees, he may be willing to switch to LF during home games while sticking to RF on the road.

This move also puts the onus clearly on Philadelphia and Atlanta. They may go into a bit of a panic mode, particularly after Cain throttled the Beast of the East tonight. Both of those teams may feel they must make countermoves. That could cause them more long-range damage than the departure of Wheeler will do to the 2014 Giants. Expect some quality prospects to be depleted from their quivers as both of those teams feel the need to keep up with the Champs.

Great day for the Giants. Eke out that last win with the offensively challenged bunch while landing the bat that could instantly transform the offense to middle of the pack at the least. Combine that with a generally excellent defense and the best overall pitching staff in baseball and you have the recipe for repeat.

    • zumie's avatar zumie said, on July 27, 2011 at 8:27 pm

A silver lining out of the cloud of injuries this season, is the side-effect of having increased the “hunger factor,” that BF has talked about. Beltran and Keppinger are both very hungry for one of those groovy World Series rings. Tejada may make a contribution when he gets back. And Pablo wants to be a big part of playoff success.

  59. paulinasia's avatar paulinasia said, on July 27, 2011 at 8:07 pm

Good trade for both teams, really. Mets have high hopes for Wheeler being their #1 or #2 in the next couple of years, Giants have a new key piece to help repeat, not just get there, as TF says, but win it all again. Roll the dice. Mets will have to wait to see how their end of the bargain turns out; we’ll find out in SF a lot sooner than that. Still thinking there will be another pickup or trade, although maybe after the deadline.

Right now it looks like two platoons: Nate/Ross in left and, as now, Torres/Rowand in center. And why the fuck not? As always, Bochy will be open to the hot hand and match ups, and as usual, he’ll be right with his decisions.
Again, it’s just too bad that Beltran wanted an outfield position that weakens left and right. Not like a Dunn, OK? Just not ideal.

Just checked. Nate’s never played LF in the majors (or anywhere else, I heard).
Nate’s Baseball Reference page is sponsored by Sheboygan Bratwurst.

How is it possible that Nate, a utility outfielder, has never played leftfield?

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis said, on July 27, 2011 at 8:33 pm

hey, check out Frankel’s win today in the Sussex Stakes. Unreal. He ran one furlong in 10.1
He ran so fast he made Canford Cliffs take a left at the 1/8 marker. Best horse I’ve seen in awhile…

I had bratwurst for dinner. Very tasty. Seemed to have a lot of veal. I swear I remember Nate playing LF for the Giants. Baseball reference shows many games Nate played “OF.” I tell you, he spent some of those innings in LF. Probably moved over from RF. Capice?

  63. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 27, 2011 at 8:32 pm

I don’t believe for a second that Beltran insisted on RF or no deal. That was probably a rumor that got over blown. He might change his mind when he starts playing there regularly. Nate will be fine in LF. He’s a fantastic outfielder, it’s not like LF is Mars…….

    • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on July 27, 2011 at 8:40 pm

bullshit. LF is a cave on the other side of the valley. The sun’s angle’s different. The animals are lower, closer. Most of them still seem friendly, but who knows? And the seagulls, the seagulls circle in over LF first. I’m tellilng you, the neanderthal brain will not quickly adapt to the new environment.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 27, 2011 at 8:40 pm

After a coupla screwups, he may want LF, put Nate back in RF. Nate is one of the best RFs in baseball, defensively. He can play LF, or CF. RF may be better for Beltran’s knees, but, maybe not the ATT RF, with the Death Valley out there…

  64. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis said, on July 27, 2011 at 8:37 pm

I said it earlier, I think our MVP should come off the bench. Ross/Torres/Beltran.
Nate comes in late for defense after Beltran has given us the 2-1 lead in the 8th.

    J. Upton is unreal. That guy is single-handedly keeping the D-Backs a contender.

  66. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 27, 2011 at 8:38 pm

Well, accourding to baseball reference, Nate has played RF exclusively his entire ML career.

Huh. I thought he had played some CF at some point.

    • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on July 27, 2011 at 8:41 pm

BR lists “OF” — CF and RF and LF, probably all in the same fucking game. Or games.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 27, 2011 at 8:45 pm

The thing is, the numbers are virtually identical barring a couple minor #s that don’t jive.

So, he’s played like 5 innings in his ML career in different spots other than RF on double switches.

Whatever. After Beltran chases down a triple or 20, he may change his mind.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 27, 2011 at 8:55 pm

No, you don’t understand the stat. It’s 328 games in RF, 328 games in OF. When both numbers are the same-that’s all he’s played. ALSO, and more importantly- on TV live or recorded I’ve seen every inning he’s played- he has never played one second anywhere but RF. This is not an arguable point.

      • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on July 27, 2011 at 9:19 pm

No, BR’s RF/OF numbers do not necessarily reflect everything that occurred. The stats only record plays, not managers’ moves. Nate might’ve move to LF for one inning and failed to reach 10 foul pop ups in a game, but it wouldn’t show up in the stats if he did nothing else in LF. Meanwhile, you put up your memory against Chuck’s? I’ve taken a lot of cheap shots at Chuck, for no good reason, but I’ve never even considered challenging his memory when he’s sure of something. Chuck has the memory of the legendary elephant.

Don’t rule this out: Left to Right – Torres / Beltran / Nate

  68. zumie's avatar zumie said, on July 27, 2011 at 8:41 pm

The Cardinals gave up on Rasmus. That guy misplayed two deep flies into two Giants victories earlier this season.

  69. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 27, 2011 at 8:49 pm

No, he has not played LF in the majors, not one inning. He has not played even one inning anywhere but RF. In the minors he played 3 games in LF..
Yeah, Beltran might change his mind but it was reported that playing RF was one of the conditions to waive his no trade. And while Bip is no great announcer, he’s no liar as far as I know. In the pregame he said the “big dog” wanted RF. Whether you or I or anyone else believes it is of no importance whatsoever.
As far as Nate in left, he’ll do OK, I’m sure. But not as well as in RF. As I said, both positions will be slightly weaker defensively. If Nate starts hitting again and Beltran does as advertised, it will be of little import…

Loo–I could totally see Beltran in CF with those two studs bookending him. That’s probably the best outfield anyway….

Plus, Loo gets points for “Ru-ined.” Hadn’t heard that one yet.

  72. DJLoo's avatar DJLoo said, on July 27, 2011 at 8:55 pm

Xoot, I think you’re misinterpreting BR. The standard fielding section is a little tricky.

    • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on July 27, 2011 at 9:07 pm

Yeah. I get tricked by spreadsheets all the time. The interstices may or may not be there between the RF/OF and innings totals. If Nate moved from RF to LF or CF and had no chances, it wouldn’t show up in the stats. But it wouldn’t mean jack shit either. Not tricky, just mechanical.

Baseball Redference is the authority. You simply don’t understand it.

    • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on July 27, 2011 at 9:08 pm

I understand it. You don’t. It has its limitations.

  75. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 27, 2011 at 9:04 pm

He’s played somewhere else for small prtions of games.

Hence the differences between RF and OF when you get to lfFld, lgRFG%, and ldRF9

The numbers slightly differ. Ergo, nertz to you . . .

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 27, 2011 at 9:05 pm

The numbers are totally identical, nimrod.

    • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on July 27, 2011 at 9:13 pm

The numbers reflect specific events, not ALL events — not managers’ moves, but plays. I also recall Nate being moved around in the OF. Maybe he never had a play in LF or CF while he stood out there (or, in LF, chased a fly ball that went into the stands). If so, everyone’s right. I know that’s a tough concept to accept, but when you’re relying on your interpretation of a spread sheet as “fact,” you’re better off accepting the fact that’s some play in those joints.
