Getting in their Phucking Dome
We have absolutely gotten inside the collective Philly dome. Can’t you just envision what last night’s food spread looked like? “It’s ok guys! We, uh, we got the first game! Yeah! We beat the hell out of ’em in Game 1! No problema! Uh, yeah, we beat Barry Zito…..long pause……And then we…..”
Reverted to form……..
What’s funny is that they might think this is psychological but as I noted before the first game, the Phillies are not exactly spring chickens anymore. Their hitters don’t inspire the same fear they once did. It’s nice to take 2 of 3 from them but the main thing I wanted to see was the character of the team and how it would hold up against the bombast of the Phillie fans, the glare of the east coast media and the overall aura of the team with the best record in the National League. Well, we started off with a Zito pearl and ended with our newest pick up doing his best Aubrey Huff 2011 impression. And yet we still took 2 of 3 from them in their yard……
The Beltran trade has meant everything. I’ve gone from envisioning this team losing in the first round of the playoffs to picking out who we are going to face in the World Series (Boston). Beltran is going to transform this offense all by himself. Besides stepping up and being the run producer we so sorely lack this year, he is going to make every hitter better by relieving the pressure each has felt to be THE GUY in this otherwise impotent line up…..
The only thing I question is Krukow’s claim on his show yesterday when he said “Beltran is a certain hall of famer.” Huh? I don’t see how you look at Beltran’s career numbers and call him a *certain hall of famer*………
Heading off to a Bluuz festival today but have time to comment that this is one confident bunch right now, a bunch of basking sharks ready to take on anyone, any time, any place. The stars are properly aligned. They will get it done. Looks now like about 96-66.
I loved this series, and perhaps the East Coast media will finally quit treating the Giants as the charming village idiots who ran through time and stole their trophy. Best of all, Charlie Manuel and his assessment of both Cain and Lincecum seems to have been less of a “let’s keep my boys infused with confidence” and more of a “I’m batshit unrealistic” thing. This was just another series to me, but the Philly fans and press were waiting for this showdown. I hope they enjoyed the end result.
I said it yesterday and I will say it again, especially after last nights game. The Road to the World Series goes throuhg San Francisco. And the road block is in place!!
Strong statement from the G’s who confidently bounced back from the 1st game. Still, a long ways to go. Beltran falling awkwardly to the turf last night reminder of how quickly it can turn.
Astros have to be licking their chops. Desperation seems to be taking hold in Atl and Phila. Appears a bidding war is underway for Pence.
Kruk called him a certain Hall of Famer? That’s hilarious! The dude is a lifetime .280 hitter in the final phase of his career who doesn’t even have 2,000 hits yet. I’m glad we got him, but I’m not as geeked about it as everyone else. I view him as a solid guy who will make a nice contribution down the stretch, but not someone who stands head and shoulders above the rest of our hitters and should have a stranglehold on the 3 hole.
….and please media—no more mentioning what he did for Houston when they picked him up years ago. That power surge was an aberration for him, not to mention that he was much younger and healthier at the time playing in a bandbox.
I think the expectations for Carlos need to be dialed down a bit.
Beltran might not absolutely tear it up but he will likely be better than most of the other hitters have been. A side benefit — could be that Pablo’s got a mentor now. Can’t hurt in that regard at all. This team has always been about the ^team^. Hopefully he’ll fit right in. And no, I don’t mean going 0-fer….
Is the Showtime thing still filming, or is it done? Just wondering if they’re getting the team now, as it could be hitting its stride. They’re getting a lot more attention now, that’s for sure. See Jimmy Fallon’s gig on some of the players and their odd appearances?
I posted that link in the last thread . . .
I think MOB hit nail on the head…this was lead story on basebal2nite, and in the commentary afterward, Nomar gives giants the edge, citing their ability to win the close games and handle themselves well in those situations.
Sure they missed Lee and Doc, but more important is Cain and Lincecum walking into their yard and shutting them down, and the pen finishing them off. Don’t forget, they won the middle game without Beltran, rowand and whitey combining for the first run off Hamels, who took the L.
Btw, Texas might have a lot to say about Boston getting to the Series, esp if they pick up Heath Bell.
Getting a guy who leads the team in every offensive category will understandably lead to some ‘geekiness’. Fangraph gives him a 3.8 compared to Pablo at 3.3. No one should expect a repeat of 2004, although to be fair, not all those games were played at Minute Maid.
Yeah, he’ll need a few more strong yr’s to reach Cooperstown.
Philly Phans are going bonkers now in the blogosphere. With Beltran gone, even though the team has the best record in the NL, they’re clamoring for Pence like he’s Roberto Clemente reincarnated. Seriously, I’ve seen this guy some, he’s OK. He seems a little gawky to me, but at this point, sure, I’d easily take him over the Gamer or Torres or even Ross. But, is he worth giving up multiple top prospects? I don’t think so. The Giants pitching has definitely gotten into the Philly Phandome, and maybe into Phills management…
Snarkk keeps his head while Philly fans are losing theirs.
Paul, Showtime is still filming. They had a camera following Beltran around yesterday for a while.
Beltran has baggage from his Mets years. Literally. One of his travel bags was a Mets bag.
All these frickin Phil fans I know here in DC are all so quiet this morning. One (who is also a client) had predicted the Phils would sweep us and now they are breaking out the typical, “Oh you are so lucky you did not face Lee and Halladay (though we took care of them in the playoffs last year)” and “oh if Polonco is playing third, you only score 2 runs last night.” Without bothering to recognize the obvious that the Phills scored a big zero in earned runs in two games. They are lucky we did not sweep their ass and they got Zito instead of Vogelhead…
I can see their whining already about playing us in SF next week because Halladay is probably not pitching that series.
Looks like it will be Bumgarner-Lee in Game 1, then my guess is that Sanchez is pitching the second game against Worley, Game 3 and Game 4 will be rematches with Cain-Hamels and Lincecum-Kendrick. If we take 3, that will be huge and push to a couple of games behind those a-holes…the Phills are quickly catching up to the Dodgers as the most detested team in baseball…
Well, he’s not a “certain Hall of Famer” right now but if Beltran can stay healthy and produce reasonable offensive numbers for another 4-5 years, considering his post season numbers as well, he *could* make it. Not first ballot but eventually. It’s not out of the question
I was also doing some number crunching about Atlanta’s pitching staff, this was after getting into an argument with my 12-year old about who has the better bullpen SF or Atlanta. He actually was arguing the Braves that little shit…so here are the numbers since the All-Star break…
Our bullpen has given up just two earned runs in 12 games since the All-Star break if you take away the one San Diego game where Ramirez gave up 3 earned runs. So without that game, our bullpen ERA is 0.577 since the break, with that game, it is still only 1.25.
On the other hand, the Atlanta bullpen has given up 18 earned runs in 49.2 innings since the all-star break for an ERA of 3.29 and that was with that 19 inning game where their pen pitched 13 innings without an earned run. Take that game away, then their bullpen ERA is 4.48 since the break.
And their starters are worse. Since the All Star break, the starters have pitched 83.1 innings and given up 49 staggering earned runs for an ERA of 5.31 since the All-Star break…that is god-awful. They keep that up then the D-Backs will catch the Braves for the Wild Card…
Giants vs. NL Central Winner and then Phills vs. DBacks….
Beltran is going to be a big help, but he’s certainly not likely to be that “big bat” tallked about. He’s more a real good hitter than a slugger, he hits HRs at Panda’s pace and has never hit one in SF, I would expect he’ll trail Panda in HR before the year is out, trail in batting average, but lead in OBP and OPS. He’s giving us CO- impact bats. And if Nate rebounds from what we hope has just been a mini-slump,we’ll have 3 solid producers in the middle of the order…
The Reds are said to be in on Pence and Bourn, so they don’t looik to be likely to deal Ramon Hernandez- even after the Mets sweep, they aren’t out of it. Maybe two wins by our guys could change things..
Have they decided whether the story is flu or food poisoning yet? Anyway, took a couple extra days for Timmy- but as I posted before the series- needed postseason form from our aces and we’d take 2 of 3. I’ll say that call is close enough…
“They’re not in our heads, nah, no way, nope, they’re not great, we can beat ’em, yesiree Bob, they ain’t in our heads, we can handle dem guys, yep, book it, they’re…”
“Stomach flu” is not actually a flu. It’s a generic term for any virus or bacteria illness in the digestive tract, such as food poisoning.
or such as weed…
So that’s the official story? Where do they claim he got it? It couldn’t be from, well, you know…
“Stomach flu” and food poisoning are not the same thing, sorry.
Only way Beltran gets into the hall of fame is by paying admission….
We got to get Belt two starts in Cincy…Panda should be hittign 5th with Beltran 3rd and Belt in between.
If Philly gives up their top two prospects for Pence then the Beltran deal looks like a complete steal or Houston made the Philly GM look like Ned Coletti…Phllies could get Melky Cabrera for Kendrick…
If Belt gets any starts he’ll hit somewhere between 5 and 7. There is zero chance they deviate from Beltran/Panda after one game. Get a fucking grip.
First game in the 4, Sandoval goes deep-yeah, get him out of there…
You know Panda is not a natural cleanup hitter, which is my point. My argument is just what would be the best 3-4-5 and I would like to see Belt get a shot at that spot. I am not ranting that this is a mistake…always looking to be an ass-hole Twin..you win again…
As to the HOF,without huge years to come, Beltran is a certain NON- Hall of Famer.Didn’t it take Billy Williams 5 or 6 tries? Carlos is .282 295 HR 1128 RBI .855 OPS in 14 seasons
Wiliams was a .290 hitter 426 HR 1475 RBI .853 OPS in 18 seasons so Billy is a pretty good comp. Carlos has a ways to go to be HOF worthy.
Who cares? I don’t. Just hit now baby.
So, does anyone think Beltran may be the candle under Huff’s ahole? Better snatch him of the FA list now!
Funny, for a team with 2 titles in a stretch of 130 odd years, the Phillie fans sure feel like they’re entitled to think their team is up there in the pantheon of the greats. The fightins blog is funny to say the least. Beyond the juvenile shit of bad teeth, beard jokes, and gay slurs, a lot of the bloggers are coming to the realization that they could very well be the Braves of the 90s. Get to the playoffs all the time, but fail in crunch time. A ton of postseason appearances with only one WS win.
Tell ya one thing, the Giants are sure burrowed deep into their fans heads . . .
Charlie Manual is an ass…
“They’re good pitchers – you say they are great pitchers? To me, I don’t know how great they are,” Manuel said. “As they move on into their career, the longevity part, I think that’s when the greatness might come by. This is a consistent game, and it goes with pitching and hitting, too. When you say somebody is great, I look up there and tonight I saw 90 [mph] fastball, 92 at the best, I saw a good changeup, I saw a breaking ball, and I saw a cutter, and every now and then a good changeup with a breaking ball, good pitching, but at the same time we can beat that. I’ve seen us beat that.”
Stick it in your fat ass Manual….

I don’t particularly disagree with Manuel. Lincecum and Cain have not pitched long enough to be called “great” pitchers, even with Timmy having the two Cys. They need a decade of excellence, IMO, to get into that category. It may or may not happen. But, for now, they usually pitch “great”, and are in the elite compared to their current competition. There’s a difference. Manuel is just publicly trying, and badly, as BF said in starting the thread, to keep his hitters heads in the game when they play the Giants. And, it’s nice bulletin board fodder for the Gmen….
My shot at Manual really is thast he knows Lincecum was not 100% healthy and did he see that 3-1 and 3-2 pitches that Timmy threw Utley??? Utterly unfuckinghittable….yeah beat that Manhole!
Yeah it don’t mean a thing.
Beltran is now at 1863 career hits.
He would have to average 200 hits a season for 5 years starting next year to get even within shouting distance of 3000 hits. He’d be 39 at the end of that period. He’ll probably top at somewhere around 2600 hits when he’s done, assuming his knees hold up for 4 or 5 years, including maybe a year as a DH. Since he played in NYC, he’ll get some HOF votes he wouldn’t get otherwise. But, I don’t see Cooperstown in his future…
Perceptive Snarkk!
2,600 hits, 400 hrs and 300+ SB’s might do it, assuming his BA doesn’t take a dive.
It might take awhile, (Jim Rice 15th try or Andres Dawson 9th) but not impossible.
Beltran was not popular in NY, and the negativity capital of the world dwells on his failures.
He has NO chance at the HOF ever. Met fans only get attached to to players who are on teams that
went to a WS. They love anybody from ’86, and in recent years Piazza and Alfonzo, that’s about it.
Most are too young to remember ’69. Yankee fans in general seem to cherish over-achieving white
players like Munson, O’Neill and Mattingly. Just an observation…
@Willied–have you read the book about Tarkanian called “Runnin Rebel?” I found it in a thrift shop the other day and I couldn’t put the damn thing down once I started it—finished it in like 3 days. Great stories about working his way up from a high school coach in Fresno to the big time. Only complaint is that he makes it sound like he never did anything wrong and everyone else was doing the cheating. Although I totally agree with him on the point he’s made for years that the NCAA plays favorites big time never messing with schools like UCLA and Kentucky.
Tark has had a place down here in Pacific Beach for years. I’ve seen him around and shot the shit with him once at a bar down in Mission Beach. No pretense at all, he was very cool to my buddies and I and got a big kick out of us asking him about old Rebels like Richard Box, Michael “Spiderman” Burns, and Glen Gondrezek.
Consider the source. It was Krukow who said Beltran was a lead pipe lock for the HOF. You should have heard him this morning defending Zito’s last two starts. I just about did a spit-take with my beer. I mean coffee.
That’s Kruk for you. Remember he’s paid by the Giants.
They would be high to let Zito pitch Sunday….if we win the first two games, I could swallow a start, but fuck Zito…
The TBA status on Zito for Sunday, though he’s healthy, shows the Giants are entering a new stage with him. His starts are now apparently subject to evaluation depending on where he pitches, or maybe even against whom. He’s a “fly ball pitcher”, so if the park to be played in is a small one, an HR hitters park, starting him is apparently now at least deemed problematic, if not to be avoided altogether. Trouble is, that fits quite a few parks with HRs/game near or over 2, including Dbacks’ and Rocks’ yards. Are they going to skip his starts when he pitches there, too?, or manipulate staff starts so he avoids Houston or Wrigley or Miller? I see this as a progression toward the end game with him. Even if they limit this TBA stuff to just Cincy, it has to be yet another wound to his “fragile” psyche. And, from a roster and pitching staff management standpoint, it’s quite a strange move if they really end up not starting him Sunday…
This is what I like,
The Phillies lost their first series since a mid-June road trip to Seattle, and they lost their first back-to-back games since June 4.

Kruk has been having quite a few “senior moments” lately. I never bought the Beltran hype and still don’t. That being said, Sabes made an excellent trade where it didn’t cost us an arm and a leg. I never saw Wheeler as more than a 4 or 5 starter . . . and that’s if all his stars aligned. That wasn’t likely going to happen with the SF starters we already have. In short, he was a trade chip and nothing more.
Word to the wise . . . Beltran’s numbers will go DOWN here. He was surrounded by a fairly good lineup in New York. That isn’t the case here – we have too many “weak sisters” in our lineup and he’ll obviously be pitched around. I rate the ballpark dimensions very similar, so that’s neutral in my opinion. Again, all in all, a plus for us going forward.
Totally agree.
They’re going to pitch around him to get to Pablo? You should pray they do.
I don’t know about the rest of you but all this HOF BS is tiresome. I don’t give damn about the HOF! Sportswriters, the biggest drinkers on the face of the earth do the voting. It’s been unfair for years.
the back to back losses were on the road in Pitts. where as the Giants did it in their park. Nope not in their heads at all!!
Surkamp is scheduled to pitch tonight. We’ll see if he’s scratched- hometown is Cincy, BTW.
and Pudge Rodriguez is supposed to be back for the Nats today, I still think there is a shot to get that done…
No to Pudge!
Why would they want him?
unless you can forsee a 10 game tail spin like the Pads did last year. Just say no to Pudge
Giants need to consult Crabtree on how to get Zito’s bad foot to suddenly re-appear, at least until September. Amazing how Crabby has now managed to avoid 3 straight training camps…
Has great timing.
Crabtree has not yet redeemed himself to me for that monster holdout. The shenanigans at TC are annoying, although Vernon Davis claims it is genuine. Whatever.
He hasn’t redeemed himself to be a mid-2nd round pick. His best games were the first 4 when he got here.
Harbaugh may help things along, but really, the guy has participated in 0 training camps, is a questionable route-runner, isn’t very fast, and has dropped too many passes for my taste.
He makes Alan Iverson look like a practice God . . .
They need to trade that clown (Crabs) as fast as he’s healthy. What a colossal waste of a pick.
Boy, when they drafted him, I thought with his performance in a high octane office at Tex Tech that good luck had dropped in their lap. Instead, looks like a giant turd…
Just like when the Niners got that guy from the high octane offense at Utah. They’ll never learn.
Rowand CF Keppinger 2B Beltran RF Sandoval 3B Ross LF Huff 1B Whiteside C Fontenot SS Vogelsong P
Tonight’s lineup looks even worse than what the Niner’s are going to field on offense. Now that’s saying sumthin’.
Gamer plays center, he’s good at running into things, and his stance at the plate — all looks like he could easily take over for Baas…
Does the LU surprise you? You were told this would be it against left handers. Dennis: Bochy is smarter than you are. Hell, he’s almost as smart as I am. Let him handle it.
Over on the splash they are calling a Zito replacement for one game. Is Mr. Smith available
Grab a cold one. Pet the ponies.
I guess Bochy is committed to a strict platoon in CF for now.
Vogelsong’s wife is stunning.
It has been a platoon for quite awhile now. Although it’s come down, hard to argue Rowand’s .314 against lefties compared to Andre’s .114..
“Vogelsong’s wife is stunning.” It’s the real reason ballplayers never want to retire. Maybe a year or two after and it was nice knowin’ ya…
I got stuck in the wives/family section in San Diego and sat in front of her. She is very very tall and far prettier than the platinum gobot wives that were there. Very vivacious and friendly…altogether a very natural beauty.
I just Googled her picture.
Me likey.
Very good looking and came across well on The Franchise.
I feel like tonight will be Keppinger’s breakout night.
About time . . .
Beltran’s on the clock as well . . .
ha ha
Here’s a link to a very interesting and informative article about Beltran. Don’t know if you need a subscription or not.
BTW, he was the top CFer in baseball by WARP from 2005-2010. BP now picks us to win the division by 11 games with a 97.9 percent chance to make the postseason.

Looks the the D Train could be a late scratch for the Reds. We might have ourselves a whole new lineup yet.
Scratch my last comment. D Train is still a go. We’ll have the same crummy lineup as originally posted.
Sniff…..
Twin, in that article they refer to “True Average.” What is that? I know what Equivalent Average (EqA) is and this looks like the same thing, i.e., they used these numbers, “.275/.388/.594” in referencing his True Average. In short, is this another name for Equivalent Average?
True Average is the same as EqA
Huff got a double last nite. So, that must mean we won’t see Belt for a while. I don’t see why Belt is up. They said they wouldn’t bring him up unless he could play consistently. That’s not happening. Now he’s seen/not seen like Ishi, and might be next to go back down if/when Tejada comes back. I’m surprised that Willis made it back to MLB, even with a pitcher starved club like the Reds. I thought he was done, given all the control problems. That’s another reason why I’d play Belt tonite. He would probably take two walks from Willis. Yeah, Huff’s stats say he’s far better vs. LHPs, but he seems to be swinging at just about anything these days…
Oh belt you! Pow! Zap! Bong!
No games until midnight, I am so ready to see some ball. I felt like a stalker last weekend watching the women’s softball tourney. A woman with a 70mph fastball is so sexy.
Ishikawa has been missed. With Nate a starter now, the bench from the left side has been more than awful, Dennis mocked the Belt/Ishikawa reference but if Belt gave them what Travis did off the bench, it would be big. As far as Huff, a week is way early to make any judgements but he’s hardly “swinging at just about anything these days…” he has a .500 OPB the last week, That meaningless double became the winning run when Nate singlehandedly willed Huff to second and drove him in…
Unlike before last year, Bochy isn’t going to hang with a non-producing vet due to contract-he’s proven that. If Huff falters again, Belt will have his shot.
Zito is going to start Sunday, thanks to Timmy:
“The Giants planned to have Sanchez come off the DL and pitch Monday against Arizona, in place of Zito. Sanchez and Zito were on the same track, that is, until Tim Lincecum got sick and Zito had to be moved up a day.”
Could be the Zitman’s last start for a looooong time, speculates Schulman (and Baggs)
Yeah Fred Lewis batting 2nd for the reds! I hope he drops a routine fly ball for ol’ times sake.
I can’t believe the D-Train is back in the bigs in someone’s rotation!!! Fired up for Vogy v Dontrelle!
That ball was either foul or Rowand needs to be hit with a stick. Even if it was fair, I’d still like to see a stick involved.
And now Rowand gets erroneously called safe at home. Fuck ’em. If this forces the Reds to be sellers and nets us Ramon Hernandez, keep the bad calls coming…
Freddie Electric, the D Train, where Harry Spilman?
This is getting hairy all of a sudden…
Freddie bonehead . . .
You can always count on Freddie Lew having at least one brain fart per game. He should be on third right now…”you can’t fix stupid.” –Ron White
Zumie, thanks for the Showtime update. As Voggie tries to limit the early damage, let’s give it up for Beltran’s first ribbie.
Voggy looking shaky tonight. I hope he’s not sinking back to his normal water level.
I still say a trade for Ubaldo wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world…
The sky is falling!
40 pitches this inning?
Hot and muggy……Bleep!
There’s was a horse named Hot and Smoggy. That sucker caused me to utter a few BLEEPS!
Nice try nip. You almost made a full day without Bleep.
Ahh, 31 . . .
Ryan’s “normal” level of performance has been outstanding for us. One shaky inning out of many stellar ones is not reverting to form.
Oh jeez. Maybe the sky IS falling.
Ok, well, maybe one bad game….
Well, I’m sort of hoping the Giants take advantage of the band box thing. Maybe we’ll score more. Lots more.
For as good as Vogie’s been, he really depends on the pen more that the other guys.
Correct me of I’m wrong, Mike.
Wow. Another bad call . . .
Just take for granted you are, Chuck. And spare us the TF tirade…
Shut up, Dennis.
To answer your question, Chuckles, he averages 6.125 innings per start. Tim is 6.45. MadBum is 6.0. Cain is 6.6.
50 pitches in 2?
A performance like this should be called a Zitfest. Rags needs to go out and slap him silly..
But I have little doubt we’ll score 5 or 6. Let’s see if Voggy can regroup…
That was a better inning from voggy
Welcome to Sauna Town. Jeez. People spend summers in that place? Sort of nice to see Alameda kid Dontrelle Willis back on his feet, with his East Bay hat on. Now if he’ll just serve up a bunch of fat pitches, I’ll be happy.
I had Huff Daddy already K’d, so I’ll gladly take the sac fly…
Hunter Pence to the Phils all but a formality…but they’re giving up a helluva lot more than a Zach Wheeler…
He’s 6 years younger than Carlos and under control until 2014. Huge difference
Gee, Fontenot is approaching the Mudbug Line…
Probably would pitch around Carlos here- just for the force.
I think the Cincy catcher will be changing dugouts this weekend. Reds announcers hinted at that early in the game. They also quoted Jocketty as saying he’s not done dealing…
Nate’s in left!!!!!!!!
And?
BR won’t be updated until tomorrow, so I’d hold off on that bold assertion.
I had a very polite email exchange with the people from BR about Nate’s stats. Apparently they make every effort to record every position change, even if the fielder does nothing in the field after a mid-inning switch, but, well, nobody’s perfect. He invited corrections. So . . . Baseball Reference is more likely than not correct, but even it’s not perfect.
Huff is out of shape. Game, however, is tied!
“He invited” — I mean, the guy who was the “people” at BR.
The person was being polite. There is nothing in what Zoot reports that supports his false assertion that Nate had played anywhere but RF. If you have no box score to support your position, you are wrongo bongo.
I did misread that- finally you acknowledge you were “more likely than not” WRONGO… Thanks. Now we’ll move along.
White magic!
YES Whitey!
The Book of Eli!
Look-alikes:
Fontenot and Todd Marinovich (except Todd is about a foot taller)
Giants Baseball
Totally disagree about the “Huff is out of shape,” Xoot. He’s not especially fast, and it takes a lot of effort for him to get it all going. Just because someone is breathing hard, doesn’t mean they’re out of shape. Olympic sprinters are breathing hard after a race. It’s all about pushing the envelope of an athlete’s particular speed.
Hey, did you see that big bug crawling on the TV screen? The Mudbug gets some airtime no thanks to Bochy…
