We Lost an Extra Inning 1 Run Game?
Well, that almost never happens. Our stud MVP bullpen went another 6 straight before finally giving in. Fontenot was abominable last night. Beltran is 1-9 since joining us. I enjoy seeing D-Train back in the league and surviving, if not dominating.
Vote time. Let’s get another POTVP in the books. Take a look to the widget to the right. Click on it. If you’ve mastered this 2-step direction you should be reading 6 *posts of the day*. One of them is more brilliant than the rest.
WTF is that poll stuff? And who cares? Anyway Twin should win everyone of those things.
Agree. Bleep.
Cincy were very kind hosts. They gave the Giants countless chances to win last night but the Giants bats were very limp. At least Vogelsong gutted it out in that heat.
On the Showtime thing, Sanchez looks pretty damn good in his re-hab. He says it only effects his throwing, yet it’s amazing to see what he is able to do with it. And apparently DeRosa is still in the picture, too. What I’m getting at is that I wouldn’t be surprised to see either of those guys at 2B with Keppinger sliding over to SS when and if they’re ready. This Fontenot/Crawford stuff must come to an end.
I went with Sarge on this one–you gotta smell the roses every now and again.
I’m still a little groggy this am—at first I thought the POTD from Sierra said “This Winehouse thing has brought back the basking feeling for me” Huhhhhh?
I can’t believe I’m typing this, but I think we miss Tejada’s bat in the line-up. Seriously.
Surprised to not see any comments on the blog last night about Ross throwing yet another bat in the stands. Dude makes a helluva catch to save his wife and kids and ends up with a blood streaming down his face. Thought it was cool that the Reds announcers gave him lots of love for that and said his name on the air. I’ve always liked T Brennaman–going back to his Cubs days with Steve Stone and Harry Carrey. Cody is out of control with the bat thing. Zum will have to give us a clarification on his proposed bat throwing rule for extra innings situations.
Yeah I too had the reds telecast, so I wasn’t sure what the bay area folks saw but the father made the play of the year….That guy won’t have to take the trash out for the rest of the year.
Agree, Dawg . That shit is lame and it’s gotta stop. As kids (or even adults in softball leagues) you were an auto out every time it happened…without gloves and pine tar.
Hey man, there was an article in SF chron about the Pro/Am league. Dorell Wright (whom I really like) was playing on a team opposite Paul Marigney, who got 39 in a losing effort. I remember a great shooting night he had at home for St. Mary’s vs. hated rivals Zags. Marigney plays in Italy now, and Wright said he’d try and get him a look with W’s, half kidding I think. couldn’t hurt.
Tark really could coach…it is not easy to take playground guys and turn them into finished products that mesh together as a team, esp on defense. Charlie Spoonhour, in a book I read, spoke very highly of how Tark organized his practices around defensive concepts, like the swarming trapping “amoeba.”
I saw LJ as a rookie, with Charlotte. You could tell then he was special…one of his teammates was hot shooting #33, Dell Curry. W’ smoked them, but these two put on quite a show.
The Pro-Am league—is that the one that is played at the gym at Kezar? Years ago I went to a summer league game there to watch Kevin Johnson play. He had just come out of Cal and I was anxious to see him as I had played against him/been on the same court with him/watched him from the bench in high school. He didn’t look good and was eaten up by a guy you might remember named Kenny Drummond. Played at NC State and I think maybe SF City College. We came away saying there was no way in hell KJ was gonna make it in the NBA.
The Ross bat shit has to stop before he kills someone. The league won’t ever do anything so it’s up to him. By all accounts he seems like a great guy. Soft hands or not, it’s time to tighten up before it’s too late. Long drive to sun valley today, catch u guys on the flip side.
I didn’t see any of yesterday game, so what is take on vogs? sounds like he got lit up early and then shut them down. In a playoff game, that can’t happen. I think he is no better than 4th in rotation right now. Great story, but with definite limitations that don’t put him in class of Cain Lincecum bum.
Looks like zito gets one more start before Sanchez takes his spot….hopefully forever.
DeRosa has a good BA at Fresno, I have no idea how hard he’s hitting the ball.Because Mudbug sucks so much at the plate they’ve been using Font against lefties, DeRosa or even, yes,Edgar Gonzales might need a shot until/if Miggy is activated. That spot has been worse than the catcher position. If nothing is done, sticking with Mike should be the only option. They know he’ll hit some, they know Crawford won’t. Brandon needs to go down for any respectable bat,
Where’s Scott McClain when you need him?
A note on this non-save issue- not all non-save situations are created equal- there is the situation where the closer is used in a blow out just to get him some work, this is when closers have traditionally suffered- the best thrive on pressure. Then there’s the tie game non-save situation. This year Wilson has appeared in 15 tie games-and surrendered 4 runs…
By your logic last night if Wilson gives up 2 runs and the Giants score 3 in their half that nets him the W, that was a good outing and he did his job. What other BS are you selling this morning? My barn is actually clean. I could use some of your shit to prance around on.
4 runs in 15 games he entered with the score tied. Why don’t you concentrate on your ASmith hate talk?
Pay attention: they were on the road. He can’t give up two and then have the Giants get three.
Dawg, the Ross bat-throwing was mentioned on the blog last night briefly.
—-
Earlier in the season, Comcast did a super-slow-mo replay on Ross losing control of the bat, and it clearly showed him opening his hands and letting it go. This is not a bat-slippage issue; on certain outside swings he is intentionally letting go of the bat in order to save his wrists the strain or some other reason. And it’s not acceptable. Or, it SHOULDN’T be acceptable. My idea was to make it an automatic out for the batter if he throws a bat in the stands, except for the ninth inning and beyond. But then that raises the question of what if a batter does it on the third strike of the third out earlier in the game. The only answer I have to that is in that case, the player is kicked out of the game.
I have to admit, that as a fan, the bat-throwing has had somewhat of an effect on how I feel about Ross.
Schulman’s game article today talks about Belt as soon appearing on a “missing persons list”. Couldn’t agree more. Instead of Belt given a shot at winning the game, Bochy lets Font hit to continue his Oh for half of July streak. If he’s not going to be played, then send him to Fresno to get ABs and stay sharp. He’s wasting away up here with an AB and a start on a here and there basis. Put him in LF a coupla games, Ross is doing nothing but throwing bats to the crowd…
Belt hit for Mota later. You don’t burn two position players in an extra inning tie game. He’ll get some starts, don’t worry about it.
Room Blamero will never get this- but sometimes it’s true- tip your cap. There is no way one can “blame” Wilson for giving up a chop hit to a kid pitcher making his first big league AB.The guy made an unexpected great play.Similarly,Edgar went down and got a good pitch. Tip your cap twice and hope for another good game today-with the good guys on top..
CF Torres
2B Keppinger
RF Beltran
3B Sandoval
LF Schierholtz
1B Belt
SS Crawford
C Stewart
P Bumgarner
I LOVE today’s lineup. I hope that doesn’t spell bad news for the good guys…
I said I love the starting lineup, I didn’t say anything about our starting pitcher…Not a good night for Farmer John sausages…
Wow. A 5-spot and the Reds are still batting…look on the bright side. We have Zito as our stopper for tomorrow.
I blame Rowand
and I think i saw Zito sitting next to farmer john before the game
and I know MadBum must be tired after the 13 inning game last night.
Madison, alas, often shows zero poise when in trouble…
This kid is supposed to be unflappable. Not tonight.
They can get this thief. Torres has to start setting the table.
I think Belt could have saved Pablo an E on that one. But regardless, Torres E, Bumgarner balk, etc…
Not the Giants best effort tonight to say the least. Yet there’s still plenty of ball to be played tonight…
Add not bothering to back up home plate to Bumgarner’s resume for tonight. I’d yank his ass right now if it wasn’t paramount to save the pen. Especially when we got Zito going tomorrow…
Physical errors will happen, shit like not backing up the plate is inexcusable.
That’s our WS MVP! Some people just don’t know when to leave on a high note. Take heed from George Costanza.
Well, Dennis, I hope you’re right that Ramon might be available still. And fuck defense- Ramon and Miggy in the 7/8 is Ruth and Gehrig compared to this sorry lot…
One question, you’re an expert on this stuff: how soon are personal attacks on Beltran, his manhood, and his Mom considered kosher? A week? Two weeks? Now?
Fire at will with the personal attacks. But I would take the different angle. Blame, attack and call out Sabean’s mom.
It’s always his fault, isn’t it?
All kidding aside, I hope I am right for once in a Blue Moon with the Ramon Hernandez deal.
I said Runzler straight up the other day. You thought that to be a little much. What would you give?
Arizona picks up Marquis. Decent, not earth shattering pickup, but he’s been hell on the Giants.
SF better get their heads out of their collective asses and win tomorrow. Don’t look now, but regardless of any Baseball Prostatus prediction, they first have to actually beat Arizona for the division before they sniff the playoffs. With this horrendous hitting, even with Beltran, any sustained hiccup in the pitching during the Dog Days puts that at risk…
So you have no call, just trashing an informed one. That’s our Snarkkles..
You see, some of us make a call and stick with it. I’ve said they’ll win their division. Now anyone can disagree with that, but what fan would mock it? Who else? The Snarkkles…
Sabes cannot be done. He’s got to get another bat…
I’ve predicted the Giants to win the division from end of ST, and haven’t wavered, despite all the injuries. But, a 97% “projection” that they will win it with 60 games to go and 3 up is just stoopid….
So Snarkk says they’ll take the division, BP says they will, I say they will- Snarkk is right, the rest are stupid…
Pending today’s games, it’s 4 up. I think most observers of the game might trust BP more than Mr. Snarkkles.
Just a guess.
We can mock the Vegas odds, too:
Giants 1-7
AZ 4-1.
Difficult game to watch, I loved rags talking to Bum after the first:
He looked like a dad trying to cheer up his little leaguer.
0fer 5 tonight and 1 fer 14 (.071) since becoming a Giant for Carlos. That Sabean sure can swing those deals.
LOL
you go doomer!
has any newsperson asked Beltran what it is like in the new clubhouse?
You can only put it on Sabean if Beltran should be expected to suck-like Garko..
But Carlos will be fine.
Hey, Baggs just tweeted that Bochy said the team will announce a trade tonight.
Hernandez? Baggs thought they were still perusing Bourn. Very interesting…
I’m hearing Cabrera from the Tribe. Not confirmed, but looks like.
My 17th favorite Cabrera…
Yeah, pray that it’s Asdrubal Cabrera and not Orlando. Not likely . . .
Just what we need, another 37-year-old with an OPS under .600.
Like I said, that Sabean sure can swing those deals…
Speaking of trades . . . Jimenez traded to Tribe.
He’s played almost exclusively at 2B this year. Does that mean Kepp slides over to SS, or do we have our second 37-year-old to start at SS this year? Either way, it signifies the end to the Mudbug and Miggy…
Announcing it before bedtime would be cruel. Maybe they can announce it as Miguel Cabrera and then correct it after we’ve had a peaceful sleep..
Well, he’s a professional hitter, much like Eugenio is a professional fielder.
Thomas Neal was what we traded for this 37-year-old “professional hitter.” And according to Schulman, Cabrera will be “primary SS.”
Let me be the first to say, this trade and especially the fact that he’s going to play short is ASININE.
If this true, then it’s because they have “wiz kid” Kipnis, a highly touted prospect that was going to make Cabrera expendable eventually, especially since Cabrera has been batting .183 with four RBI and one stolen base since the All-Star break. What did Flav say about Beltran . . . “He’s already fittin’ right in with the guys!”
Cabrera’s career Rdrs (defensive runs saved above avg) is -19 for his career at SS. A-S-I-N-I-N-E
Seriously, the first Flapper to approve of this trade can go fuck themselves.
I thought you said that knowing Sabes was trying was good enough for the Doomer.
Trading for Beltran was trying. Trading for Cabrera will only elicit crying.
Here’s Keith Law’s tweet about the trade: The Giants, tired of playing a statue (Tejada) or an automatic out (Crawford) at short, acquire Orlando Cabrera, who is both
lol . . . Good one Law. Yeah, this trade is hard to figure out. Neal had turned into quite the find for the Giants after being drafted in the 36th round of the 2005 MLB draft. He is a career .300 hitter in the minors, with a .378 OBP and .857 OPS. Sure, he was susceptible in the past to breaking pitches, but this year, he seemed to have figured it out.
In fact, this is a pretty good blurb from the Fresno Bee about him having his epiphany at the plate, “The Fresno Bee reports two trips to the DL in 2011 have proven to be a blessing in disguise for Giants OF prospect Thomas Neal. While sitting on the pine, Neal said he studied video from the last two seasons that helped him change his approach at the plate. The results have been phenomenal. Thomas is hitting .429 in his last 10 games for Triple-A Fresno, but for the season he is batting .375 with a .438 on-base percentage, .563 slugging percentage and 1.001 OPS in 24 games. “Early on … I wasn’t really comfortable,” said Neal, who is considered the Giants’ No. 7 prospect by Baseball America. “Now the biggest thing is I’m comfortable in the box and I’m able to just go out and play.” Neal also has 19 runs, five doubles, two triples, two homers and 15 RBI. “He’s doing a great job with his approach to hitting,” Fresno skipper Steve Decker said. “He looks like a professional guy who’s been in the league. If he can maintain that strike-zone awareness and that approach, he’ll be just fine.”
Yeah, this is a head scratcher.
Hard game to watch. 11 hits, but not at the right time. I was not opposed to the Beltran deal, but no one here heard me exult over it. Small sample, but I’m beginning to see why Mets fans I know do not miss him. Time will tell (how’s that for an original notion?). I am thoroughly underwhelmed by the Orlando Cabrera deal; would do better suiting up another Orlando, Cepeda. The night is young.
Tomorrow I may meet Macdog.
Ruff, ruff.
The Dodgers are doing their best to help out the Giants tonight. D-Backs are having their share of struggles.
Do not forget Neukom’s lessons. Make multiple moves. One will pay off. FSanchez and Garko? Please review the video of FSanchez’s post season last year. Ramirez and Lopez? The pinball machine goes wild. Double win! Guillen and Ross? Please review the video . . . . This front office is not fooling around.
You’re getting some incorrect numbers for Neal- he is hitting .295 for the season with 2 HR in 220 AB and a .761 OPS. In his last 10 games he is hitting .205.None of his numbers are even good for the hitter friendly PCL..
http://tinyurl.com/3q9umjo
That was for Blade.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?!! Orlando Cabrera, I have a tearful lump in my throat I’m so pissed.
You’re right for the season . . . I indicated for the first 24 games of season (read my post again).
Well, why would you make a BFD about 24 games when he died after that? Reading it 10 times, all it does is confirm he’s totally sucked.
Well, the trade shows us the Giants had soured on Neal.
Who wouldn’t? Those are awful fucking numbers. The more I look at his PCL numbers, the better the trade looks…
Some people rip Sabean….how about putting the blame on Crawford and Font. They blew their chance. Now they’ll have to wait quite a while. The shortstop spot was wide-open for one of them to take it, and they didn’t get it done.
Yeah, seemed like high hopes for Neal a year or two ago but not lately. Still some good young outfielders in the system, he’s probably not a loss. How much value Cabrera brings, who knows, but they had to do something. 17th favorite Cabrera, very funny, Michael! Hell, I’ll take Orlando over Melky. Some here have touted Melky, the guy’s a clown.
Ubaldo was a bit discombobulated by the trade rumors before this evening’s game. He was pulled after his 41st pitch when the trade was announced officially. His line was 1 inning, 4 runs scored on him, 36 ERA and 6 WHIP.
It’s stunning what’s happened to that guy’s career. 15-1 at the All-Star break last year, and all downhill from there.
I haven’t seen Orlando Cabrera play this year, just a couple video clips. Obviously, he’s not what he once was, but then again, they have Asdrubal at short. We have had a serious void at shortstop, especially offensively. I wonder what this also says about Miggy’s health; I read somewhere he’s due back August 4, but maybe they thought even with his nice July numbers, they don’t want him as a SS in the post-season. Xoot makes a good point above; a number of the deals have been gold, at least short-term, others not so. But we are defending champs and will do anything to improve; Sabean, Neukom understand this, maybe we need to.
Ed, I started pushing this mutiple-deal idea last season, and a guy over on the Splash pointed out that Microsoft (and other similar behemoths) use that acquisition model: buy up two or three small companies with similar new technology — one of them will pay off. Neukom, of course, helped build Microsoft.
I like your idea because it’s a holistic approach!
Of course, Garko and the absence of Sanchez cost them a spot in the 2009 postseason—IMO. Maybe we’d be going for the 3-peat..
;- )
I’m really not intending to give you a hard time, Blade. Yeah, I missed that it was his first 24 games but that just points up how poorly he’s fared this year. I don’t follow why your post would praise him. I’ve watched his numbers, as I do all their prospects, Anyway, no offense intended: you’re great, it’s Neal who’s sucked 😉
De nada Mike . . . I should have done better research on the cut and paste. My point was more toward Cabrera, whom was having a great start this season, but has been absolutely putrid for the last couple of months. However, the good thing about Cabrera is that he has good experience, including the post season.
You know who I wish we could get for Neal? I would like to have Omar Vizquel back. Not certain what his numbers are currently in Chicago as a part time player . . . but last year, he really helped them out (again in a part time role).
J. Upton with the bases-clearing double. He’s a one-man wrecking crew.
Well, depending on Huff and Belt, we could see some of Miggy at third and Pablo at first. Tejada was hitting very well when he went down…
And Bochy isn’t wedded to any LU, obviously. We could have 11 different SS before it’s over.
In thinking about other positions that could use even marginal improvement, I recalled what someone posted here yesterday or the day before, that Huff has one HR at home this year. I still can get my brain around that. Astounding.
See–my brain’s frozen–‘can’t’!
You can’t help but root for the Bucs–but then they pull off a deal like the one for Derrek Lee which is such a backwards step. You’re really not going anywhere. Bring up your version of Scott McClain if you’ve got one. Leave the dead wood to others.
When Big Z had his Big Blowup last year, I don’t recall if he went directly at Lee. But if you looked at the video of the play, Lee both couldn’t be bothered/couldn’t actually bend to get the ball down the RF line. He’s done nothing offensively for the O’s. I’m going up to see Bautista and the Jays next weekend; hope they drop Guerrero by then. Let the kids play, like we did post-Barry–it’s the only way to know what you’ve got.
Now, that, along with your 17th best Cabrera line are POTD . . .
Not certain how that happened, but your last post (about “wrongo” disappeared Twin.
Well, with the Rockies figuratively crying uncle for the season (with the Ubaldo trade), next will be the Dodgers and Padres being sellers, i.e., say bye bye to Kuroda and Bell, respectively.
I think Kuroda invoked his no trade- say’s he ain’t goin’
Sometimes I’ll delete a fucked up post of mine- but don’t know what happened to that. Something about “he can’t be any worse”…shit, I forgot the rest. I’m at my best in improv…
😉 Night all.
Eugenio just flied out- he’s 0 for 15 now. Like he did most of us, he drove me crazy. But I loved that guy.
BULLETIN!!!!
According to line one of this article Xoot was correct about Nate in LF:
http://tinyurl.com/43wyg94
No. it was his second game, as the article states. His first game was the 28th against Philly, Beltran’s debut.. You idiots really need to give up.
I just wanted to see if you really went to bed.
An E-Mail woke me up. It said “A short guy is causing more shit…” and actually, it was Chuckles who “misremembered”. I’m thinking it was the Evening of the Lamb
Now if you’ll be good, I can get some sleep. I’d turn off E-Mail alerts but that’s how I found about the no-Paulino trade…
Life!… is full of surprises. Consider the fate of this creature’s poor mother, struck down in the fourth month of her maternal condition by an elephant, a wild elephant. Struck down!… on an uncharted African isle. The result is plain to see… Ladies and gentlemen… The terrible…Barry…Zito!!!!!!
God bless us. Everyone.
