A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

To Watch or Not to Watch?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 21, 2011

I thought about skipping the game today. I don’t have anything else to do but I’m just having trouble gathering up any interest in anything baseball related pre-August 23rd. I am slightly interested to see the pitching match up. You have to think that Sosa will be pretty geeked to pitch against us. And Runzler starting is at least slightly interesting.

Interesting that Belt got the start vs Sosa. He seems to be much tougher on lefties. I think Bochy has finally waved the white flag on Rowand……..

As long as he stays aggressive, he’ll be fine. Still a major decision looming when Beltran returns. Huff is unlikely to be benched- so does he platoon with Ross and maybe give Huff a breather once a week or so? Can’t see Grok sitting now. Don’t care what you would do, what do think happens, you know: in real life..
    This is for all.

There’s a diff between meek and selective. He’d been the former too often. Maybe I shoud have said “aggressive when he gets a pitch”.

sure, but in btw the HRs belt was 0-13 with 6 Ks. So either he swung at pitches that weren’t strikes, or missed the ones that were.

Which is why it’s too bad he doesn’t have 300 ABs this year. The micro analysis of Belt’s performance over 100 ABs is less telling than asking whether or not the Giants record would be any worse if he had seen more ML playing time this year. I think the answer is no.

Given the chance to play everyday, Belt will produce. Reason for his “meekness” at the plate is the simple fact that he is Bochy’s yo-yo boy, jacked around continually. At long last it would seem that Brucie has finally admitted to himself that Belt is at least preferable to Rowand. Sometimes progress is gradual. Was it in June that SF had its last three-run tater?

Flav: Think you are correct in your assessment of Runzler being still young and with a bunch of potential. He needs a whole lot of personal coaching, off-season work, that sort of thing. Betcha the Cards would love to offer a trade for him to get him under the tutelage of Duncan Donutz. For now, of course, gross ineptitude with his current straightline heat and little more to offer should quickly end the experiment. It is high time to bring up Eric Surkamp.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on August 21, 2011 at 12:12 pm

Belt should not come out of the lineup the rest of the season, except for a day off here and there. He’s learning, but when he squares it up, it goes. Squatter may need to go on the DL this week with a foot sprain to make room for Beltran, then we may not see him again after the callups — maybe he can visit Chicago in the meanwhile to see a Bears preseason game. Mota should not get too much crap for his first inning. He got rushed in from the Runzler meltdown, wasn’t ready to go. No excuses from now on, though…

Wonder what the thinking was in bringing up Edlefsen when Wilson got D.L.ed. Last season and going into this one i was as high on Edlefsen as anyone, more so maybe. This year he has mostly regressed as he got slotted into the PCL meatgrinder. Perhaps this is the kid’s one chance at The Show, his 15 minutes of fame. Mayyybe he succeeds in the bigs. My preference for the promotion ~ at this time~ would have been Dan Otero who absolutely excelled in AA and has held his own quite well at Fresno. Hopefully the Giants brass know what the hell they’re doing and i’m just blowing smoke.

he’s just filling a spot, I don’t know how much of a *chance* he’s getting. Too bad Kroon regressed, it would have been great to see him realize this dream of returning to the major leagues and pitching in a game in front of his kids…….

gotta think that Huddy is out of the game now that he’s finished 7 strong against the doosh-backs. It’s too bad that we can’t win a game every now and again. Arizona is losing as many as we are these days……

I think Belt will end up sitting. Nate has been playing well, though he hasn’t really hit this series at all. Rowand or Ross in the leadoff position. Obviously, I’d prefer Ross though he sucks too. Torres could be back next week, I could dig me some Andres in center field regularly when he gets back….
Belt can stay on the team, give Huff an occasional breather and take a start away from Nate once or twice a week. Belt had a chance and he didn’t take advantage of it, today’s excluded. I suppose he still has a few more games to get hot and take the job away from Nate when Beltran comes back next Thurs or Fri…….

Something I’ve never understood….edelfsen in the dugout there, sitting all by himself. why? No pitching coach or stewart to talk to, go over what’s working/who he faces next inning if still in there? Unwritten rule, that whomever is in there on the mound gets left alone btw innings, regardless of what happened?

    • DJLoo's avatar DJLoo said, on August 21, 2011 at 12:53 pm

  29. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on August 21, 2011 at 12:47 pm

Hats off to Edlefsen for his one out fireman job. Maybe that could be his role. That’s projecting a lot, though. There are guys who can come in with ducks on the pond and almost always successfully get outta the inning. It may be a talent more rare than that of closing out the game in the 9th.

Flav: I’ve given up on Rowand, except in a P.H. role, where he has had a good measure of success. Aside from that limited slot i’d place him in the Boar’s tits category.

Lucks out with Cabrera, don’t bunt him with Stew at first and no outs, the OFer blew the Cabrera bloop play, otherwise it’s a DP with Stewie running. Flav, you’re getting me excited about this upcoming 12-game home stand. Do I sense a 9-3, or maybe even better prediction coming from you? Great news like that would help squelch my negativity and pessimism. Maybe. 😛

That’s what you get for not running over the catcher at home plate when ya get the chance.
    Pussy. We deserve to lose.

The challenge for the Giants is that the D-Backs schedule the rest of the way isn’t all that tough either. They play 4 against the Nats, then the Padres, etc. Those 6 between the Giants and D-Backs loom large and crucial for the Giants.

Good AB, Nate. Guy walks Huff, pressure on, swing at the first pitch. The Giants way.
If the Giants pull this motha out today, the earth may spin off its asss, uh, axis…

Belt, damn those called third strikes, really sucks when you go 4 for 5. Gotta sit him next game, figure out how to be aggressive on the strike 2 count…
