A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

To Watch or Not to Watch?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 21, 2011

I thought about skipping the game today. I don’t have anything else to do but I’m just having trouble gathering up any interest in anything baseball related pre-August 23rd. I am slightly interested to see the pitching match up. You have to think that Sosa will be pretty geeked to pitch against us. And Runzler starting is at least slightly interesting.

Interesting that Belt got the start vs Sosa. He seems to be much tougher on lefties. I think Bochy has finally waved the white flag on Rowand……..

Again, no bunting with Belt on first. Result, DP. Highly predictable with Tejada up. He’s near unwatchable. Even if he fuckin can’t bunt, the worst he could do is strike out, pop up. Chance of him bunting into a DP way less that hitting into one. Insane managing…

I haven’t kept an officially tally. I thought you bailed (at least, from the stand point of feeling like we weren’t making the playoffs this year). It’s a fluid list my man, say you’re not on it and I freaking take you off it!!!!!!

I just decided I was going to watch the games without worrying so much about the playoffs, given all the injuries the Giants have had. I hope they make the playoffs, obviously, but I’m not going to agonize over it. They’ve done a remarkable thing already just being in the hunt, given the insane amount of injuries. Maybe that sounds wishy/washy, but I don’t see it that way.

Howsabout this: not getting swept by the worst team we played this year. Snarkk nailed this 1/3 cold. I clearly felt the same way as my original game 1 post stated. We are through the worst of this and today’s win doesn’t sway my opinion: we win this division. If our hitting stays at 2.4 runs a game (the stat knbr reeled off for our last 3 weeks) then my prediction ends with simply winning the division. But good things are on the near horizon. Now go get your pole smoked or whatever the hell you do to relax and let’s get our steamroll on starting Tuesday.

  23. zumie's avatar zumie said, on August 21, 2011 at 3:32 pm

Just a thought about 2012, if anyone cares…..let’s say that Ross stays more or less about the same this season, then the Giants don’t re-sign him for 6 mil….along with no Tejada (6 mil), no De Rosa (6 mil), Affeldt re-signed at a discount, that’s 20+ mil right there. For a bit more, the Giants could be a serious player in the Fielder and Pujols sweepstakes. Could $250 mil for 10 years get Pujols? Is that too much, too long?
It could be Pujols at firstbase, Huff in leftfield, Belt in rightfield, and give Wheeler a shot at centerfield in Spring Training.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 21, 2011 at 3:44 pm

Preface this by saying I don’t like him (for reasons I’ve outlined here before), but for much, much less, you could get Reyes. Basically Zumie – these 3 guys (2 that you mentioned and Reyes) are the elite free agents next year. After that, there is a big drop off. I don’t see him or hear about him as much as you guys, but what about Coco Crisp? He seems like he could replace anyone in our outfield and he would come cheap.

Jesus Guzman 2/3 so far today. San dawg is at the gm and he just texted me that fucking Guzman has the 3rd most rbis in the NL since the all star break— probably with significantly less at bats then 1/2 since he barely took the first base job full time until about 3 weeks ago and he’s dealt with a bad elbow of late. Makes me glad that I scooped his ass early from the ww to place him on all 4 of my fantasy teams. To be clear, I don’t fault the giants for a second for letting this guy go. It’s just ironic to look at the box scores everyday and watch him fill out the stat sheets day in and day out while out hitters fill out the semen sheets day in and day out. It’s cool, I cab celebrate his year by myself πŸ™‚

  29. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on August 21, 2011 at 4:31 pm

Wow was i shocked! Bottom of the 9th. Two on. Nobody out. Affeldt in trouble. Houston’s manager elected to sacrifice. Runners to scoring position. A walk. A special K. by Affeldt. Flyout with the bases juiced. Even with their closer and setup man hors de combat Giants pen went 9 1/3 without surrendering a single run. This has got to be the most amazing BP in the game. Been the strength of the team all season as SF today squeezed one out to be able to return to the Bay without being totally humiliated, ending the road trip from hell with a small rainbow at the end of eleven innings.

Coming back into the house after picking onions beginning with that two on and nobody out situation in the bottom of the ninth; i was first resigned at seeing the 6-4 final. Then i noticed it was in eleven innings. Then it dawned on my sun-fuddled brain that Ramirez had set them down. Looked at the tally again and this time my eyes told me the serendipitous truth. Shocked. We won.

So today it was the BPB show: Bullpen, Panda, Belt , perhaps in that order as Sandoval cashed in the pot. Some things we learned. This BP is totally amazing. From Mota, to Edlefsen, to Casilla, to Affeldt and closing it out with Ramirez;; those guys should be the toast of the town when their flight returns home tonight. We also learned that Dan Runzler needs work ~ preferably at Fresno and during the offseason. Third, we learned that when given the opportunity on something more than a day here, day there basis, Brandon Belt is every bit as good as his one full year in the Minors indicated. Bochy will have NO excuse. None. Flying Nun to not play this kid every day from here on in. How long has it been since any Giant went four for five in a game and how long since any member of this team clobbered a three-run smash?

Next season the core of the Giants lineup will be Pablo, Buster and Belt. The pitching should be even more fantastic.

The bullpen, as I have highlighted many times in the potg widget, continues to be the reason we win games. They are hands down potg when I get home. Unless any of you can show me who contributed more than 10 innings of no run ball (or whatever if was) until our hitters finally managed to cobble together enough runs to win this bad boy. They don’t hold them scoreless, we lose. No other way to argue it.

  31. Big flavor's avatar Big flavor said, on August 21, 2011 at 4:44 pm

Just checked: 9.1 innings of no run, 5 hit ball. They kept pitching and pitching, finally Pablo came thru. We don’t win this game without them and that why they are potg. Again.

    • DJLoo's avatar DJLoo said, on August 21, 2011 at 4:48 pm

  32. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on August 21, 2011 at 5:38 pm

I just think you should select one of them, but whatever. I selected Edlefsen ( after Belt) because it was his debut, he was nasty, and it was a clutch, tough situation for a rookie.
Anyway, I sure don’t know of anyone disputing that the pen has been great,..
So I’ll adjust my picks since it can be a group:
Quad POTG to Belt, Edlefsen, Sandoval, and Ramirez ( for a pain free save)..
And wait: I thought Belt was supposed to forget how to hit if he didn’t play everyday..

As Flav noted, I was at the Padre game today where they retired Trevor Hoffman’s jersey. I like to bash the Pads whenever I can, but I gotta admit the ceremony kicked ass. They played β€œHells Bells” and Trevor made one last walk in from the bullpen and the crowd went nuts. Lots of great guests and video tributes including a surprisingly well said message of congratulations from AC/DC lead singer Brian Johnson.
Hoffman’s dad passed away in the early 90’s. He was an ex-Marine who worked at the post office in Anaheim and also was an usher at the Big A. He was known there as β€œThe Singing Usher” and occasionally sang the national anthem before Angel games. In 1981, when Hoffman’s brother was on the Bosox, Hoffman senior sang the anthem at Fenway on opening day. Today for the anthem they had the Marine Corps color-guard set up in the outfield and on the big screen played the clip of Hoffman’s dad’s Fenway performance. It was pretty fucking emotional. I had to wipe away a few tears and looking around, I wasn’t the only one.

It’s a wonder he’s never been hit in the head by a Cody Ross bat…The Astros soon to be former owner McLane sits in the first row behind homeplate, so as to always be in the camera’s angle..Plus he leaves everygame around the 6th inning…But seeing Neukom there, cupping hands to mouth, quielty cheering on his team was a revelation to me…The guy is probably as big a fan as all of us here…That’s the kind of leader you hope to have, but rarely will ever see…Especially in today’s big business of professional sports.

We went to a couple of games early in the season, but I already told them that we probably can’t afford another family trip to the park to see the Giants down the stretch, for two reasons: we have mostly blown through our summer entertainment budget, and stretch drive tickets are expensive.

Here is the dilemma. My wife periodically checks the online price for tickets, and she noticed that the slump has depressed demand enough to bring the prices down for some of the home game tickets. So the kids now know that if the Giants suck enough to fall out of contention, we might be able to afford to go to one more game this year. The kids want to go to a game. The kids don’t want the Giants to suck. But they can’t go unless the Giants suck. Dilemma.

I am thinking that the best (and most truthful) resolution for the whole thing it to announce that I am too fucking busy right now to take them to any games, and they should be grateful for what they already got, and to shut up and eat their vegetables.

Love the way Craig just put the Houston series out of mind and has focused on almost single-handedly willing the team to start cruising starting on Tuesday. Pablo might’ve just thought “the hell with Tuesday, let’s start it now.” Let’s hope so. Just curious, BF, if the team doesn’t start cruising on Tuesday, how many games before you join Dennis out on the ledge….?…

With a lot of talk about “maybe it’s not their year”, I’d say that picking up a game while losing 2 of 3 to the Astros might be a sign that it is…

It was a humbling week for the D-Backs. They got to measure themselves against the Phillies and Braves, and went 1-5. The Giants didn’t do much better, but the Giants weren’t hitting on all cylinders lately and the D-Backs were playing their best ball.

  43. paulinasia's avatar paulinasia said, on August 21, 2011 at 8:12 pm

Agree about that…. amazing they’re still within a game and a half, just like it was amazing they were in 1st a couple months back with all those injuries. Like I said before, they’ve only got one competitor for the playoffs (forget the wildcard) and that’s the Snakes. It certainly hasn’t been their year for staying healthy, but the division and post-season are still there for the taking with well over a month to go. Anyone here really doesn’t think they will catch and pass AZ? Really?

    • zumie's avatar zumie said, on August 21, 2011 at 8:25 pm

I guess I have a more nuanced position on this, which is….how can we know? With all that’s gone on, how can anything be predicted? I’d rather just enjoy each game, one at a time, and let the chips fall where they may. The D-Backs will be tough to catch because they pound other teams’ 3,4,and 5 starters, and the Giants hardly pound anyone. If the Giants do make the playoffs, it will be one of the most well-deserved champagne celebrations ever in baseball history. I would love to see that champagne celebration. And I like the Giants’ chances in a 5-game series with the Phillies.

Agree, Zum, about just enjoying it all the rest of the way, and of course we don’t know how it will go; if we did, it wouldn’t be enjoyable. I also like the Giants’ chances in a 5-game series against the Phils to open the playoffs…. just as I like their chances with 6 games to go head-to-head against AZ. Those games will be the key…

Mine at least, was not meant to be a prediction. I made that in March..and I always enjoy baseball. If I really KNEW, I sure wouldn’t be hanging around this pop joint…
As to the Dbacks, lots of misperception- they really don’t hit all that much better than last year ( 4.5 RPG this year, 4.4 last) But they give up 3/4 of a run less. And their pen went from 5.74 to 3.75.

Washington had a nice walk-off win against the Phillies today. Maybe that gives them some momentum going into the series with the D-Backs.

Jerome Williams picked up the win for the Angels today–7 innings, 1 earned run. First win in the bigs since 2005. Good for him.

I always had high hopes for Williams. Part of a young up-and-coming rotation with him, Ainsworth, Foppert, Nathan, Bonser in the wings… I’ll take the rotation we have now, of course, but good to see Williams still fighting for it.

twin, you brought up an interesting question earlier that we really didn’t address. when beltran comes back, who sits? my first thought is the obvious one, huff/ross platoon. but they’re both sort of starting to hit. Nate has been a little hot/cold. belt.

so we get back to the bochy solution: play them all a little bit. if nate/belt/huff weren’t all lefty, it would be easier.

but you wanted an answer so:
rhp – belt lf, beltran cf, nate rf, huff 1b (that’s really not so hard). no idea who leads off. font, ss/2b?
lhp – ross lf, beltran cf, nate rf, belt 1b, ross lead off though that’s not really that great.

you ask a good question. it’s not at all straight forward how to answer it other than i prefer rowand to be the right hand pinch hitter and whoever else is sitting to be the left side pinch hitter.

Are Tiggers are a wonderful thing
Their tops are made out of rubber
Their bottoms are made out of spring

    Cain. Home. August 23rd.
Be afraid, Doomerelas. Be very afraid. I have not yet begun to fuck Arizona’s standing where the sun don’t shine.
    Goodnight, gentlemen (question mark)

Good night all. Haven’t been updating much, I think it became tiresome for you all. Getting another MRI tomorrow. No idea what to expect on this one–my right hand was always how I could tell if things weren’t right. But it got totally fucked with the craniotomy so it’s hard for me to tell as easily as before. I had had some adrenal problems as well, but that seems to have been addressed successfully. Anyway, this is a big one, if there’s another recurrence it would not be a real good thing.
