A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

August 23rd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 23, 2011

I went to a wedding years ago where the bride’s dad got drunk and by about the middle of the reception he was running around to everyone he could find and screaming “July 28th!!!!!”.  Most people didn’t know what he was talking about. It turned out that was his birthday and he was inviting everyone to to the party on his boat. As the evening wore on, my buddies and I all joined in the fray and pretty soon the entire wedding was drunk running around yelling “July 28th!!!!” to whoever was near by. The evening ending at some bar and I have this perfect image of this dude stumbling out the front door of the bar and wandering away into the night all the while mumbling “July 28th” to himself……..

The girl I took to that wedding 14 years ago, who’s married with a couple of kids now, will still send me a random text every year or so that simply says “July 28th”. I respond in kind…….

Without quite the purpose and repetition as Mr July 28th himself, I give you the following battle cry:

“August 23rd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Not sure what this is an ad for but it’s a place in Wisconsin…….

Finally, that day is here. Who knows if we win tonight. That’s not the point. The point is that we have broken through to the other side. A 12 game homey. The rest of the way we play teams who are under .500 and I am lumping Arizona in there because I think they peaked and are going to continue their spiral downward for the rest of the way. Not to mention, we are getting healthier………

I’ve got no idea if we have what it takes to advance past the first round in the playoffs. As I’ve patiently pointed out many times, we are missing all the fire power from last year. But if Beltran starts hitting and Huff and Pablo stay hot, who knows? Cabrera could be last year’s Renteria. So could, gulp, Tejada.

By the way, none of us ever went to that birthday party or ever saw Mr. July 28th ever again. Maybe the equivalent here happens and we miss the playoffs. All I know is that if it’s ever gonna happen for us this year it starts today. August 23rd. I’m extremely confident and positive today. Bring it……

And by the way, my *list* of fans who have given up on this year has been torn up and thrown away. If you were on board last year you’re on board this year. I might have to strap your screaming ass into your seat but you are coming along for this ride. And this ain’t no bus you’re on a goddamn F-16 cause if you’re a Flapper you got wings and today it’s “2-flaps Up” baby……

And here’s an update on the Flap Get Together I am planning. As of right now it will either be Sept 3rd or 4th. Sat is a 6pm game, Sun is a 1pm game vs the Doosh backs in our yard and I fully expect to have a firm grip on first place when we play them. It will be somewhere on the Peninsula between San Jose and SF. E mail me if you are interested in attending and if one day is better than the other for you. Right now, it’s me and San Dawg. I am keeping the details of it in email since there are lots of unknown people who read this blog and never post. But all of the regs are invited. WillieD, I can tell you San Dawg is simply bursting for you to attend this……. bigflavor77@gmail.com

As stated last week, got home from vacation right at the start of the first Braves game. Wilson goes on to give up 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th and blows the game, he then goes to see the arm doc and proceeds to the DL.

We lose the next game in 11 innings. Timmy pirthces a brilliant game with one bad pitch that ends up as the game’s only run. We then embarrass ourselves in the first two games in Houston and then go on to a monumental victory to get one win in Houston. Wake up on the morning of August 23rd and through all that mess in the last week, we actually gained a game on the Douchebags!

The West is ours! Belt has to play every day!

Have fun flav. I haven’t seen any pro sports in a few years, and dig hearing all the game (etc.) recaps, esp the out of town guys like Ed and wilco and pawlie and sd. Weather here is supposed to heat up this week, so the ball might be carrying a little better certain parts of the yard.
It is always interesting to read blog comments here, whether or not you agree with them. It will be fun to meet up with people, that’s a really cool idea. Sometimes on the fangraphs site, the blog comments are just as insightful as the real article.
As an example, on one entry talking about Jason Heyward, bloggers made the comment that Braves mgr. was batting Jordan Schaefer in the leadoff despite a shitty OBP…which Gonzalez admitted he didn’t even bother to check what that was. Huh?
I posted something few days ago about mgrs and talent…I think black deserves a hell of a lot of credit for getting Padres near 3rd in the division given the talent he has, what they have dumped off (clean up hitte ludwick and set up guy adams), and what the org spends. Manuel can trot out Howard, Polanco, Utley, rollins victorino and now pence (6 f-ing all stars), plus halladay and lee to go with hamels. What black has to do to manage a game is a hell of a lot harder than writing those names into the LU.

I salute you, Capt. Magnus Flavoris, for revving up the F-16 and bringing us on board. I mean, really, look at last year: the season and even more the postseason. That was a Mach 5 ride that no one would’ve seen coming quite that way. I’m also thinking that a number of teams like the Phillies and Brewers may simply have too easy a run into the postseason and be flat. Anyway, one step at a time. AUGUST TWENTY-THIRD. Numerologists, beware.

Incidentally, Bochy should’ve been mgr of the yr last yr, even more so this yr. I dare say any success this year will be more meaningful than last year in the eyes of the players. It was harder. I’m not saying ANY success this year is better than a ring, no, I’m just saying this has been like the Bataan march, or some more appropriate analogy.

Twin, glad to hear your relatively good news. Hoping for good progress on all fronts.

. Flavor likes to have polls and votes. this should be a simple one with no sniveling out of it: Will the Giants win the West? This should not be an anonymous one, make your pick logged on as a comment- Yea or Nay. No ifs, sniffs, or maybes. No vote at all is a “nay”.
I am a “Yea”, of course.

Pawlie mentioned Joe Maddon, and I’m sure he’s a good manager. The specs sure make him look like a smart one. But did you know it’s not just Botchy, you Bonehead bashers. Every manager is an idiot, even Joe has a website just for him: joemaddonsucks.com. Fire Joe Madden blog forums, the whole nine yards. So another great idea is a Battle of the FireOurManager websites. Since all of you think that your dumb manager is dumber than their dumb manager, it should be a lively forum.

I’ve been a yes all along. Whatever, happens, I will enjoy … knowing this team gave it everything. Bochy deserves manager of the year.

It’s been a good couple days for the whole Giants organization: gain 1.5 games on the douchebags and every single big prospect (Surkamp, Brown, Adrianza, Hembree, Peguero, Joseph, Panik) for the last two days, something TF alluded to last night.

One more thing, Torres has been hitting well at AAA. He has been quickly discarded by the dimwits on the Splash and Extra Baggs, and he has had a terrible couple months but I still think he has something to offer in a big way. Worth watching.

“The fact that you think the team will likely not win the West”

Well, I’ve definitely made the decision to stop worrying about it. Maybe it’s “torture fatigue” getting to me.
It would be a great accomplishment for the Giants to make the playoffs, given all that’s happened to them this season. I’m rooting for them to make it. Count me as predicting they will. It wouldn’t surprise me if they tied, though, and had to do the one-game playoff thing. I think it’s going to be that close down the stretch. Once IN the playoffs, I think the Giants can get it done against the Phillies in a 5-game series.

This is actually consistent with what I said at the beginning of the season, about how the Giants are built better for the playoffs than the regular season. Granted, a lot of water has gone under the bridge since then, but the basic idea is still true.

Being a veteran of a number of NoCal quakes, this was a good one. I estimated 30 seconds–just one long significant shaking, no real crescendo, no directional rolling, not even violent. Nothing fell, but bits of paint and plaster. Just a good solid shaking. As someone posted above, it’s weird because you don’t expect them here, although we had a small one just last July. Had to do a bit of explaining to my neighbors. Anyway, it may not make the news, but the epicenter is literally a couple miles from Virginia’s Lake Anna nuclear plant. Let’s hope they did some checking after Fukushima. The D-backs-Nats game has been briefly delayed–checking for structural damage.

As to the D-backs, it seems to me trading away Kelly Johnson for Aaron Hill and John Donald is a desperation move and won’t sit well for their chemistry.

Glad to hear the good report, Twin. And count me in for the division!

This is an abstract form of mathematics that is incomprehensible to some. Giving the Giants a 30% chance of winning the division does not mean that the remaining teams have a 70% chance combined. Each team’s percentage is a stand-alone figure. I may need a blackboard.

If the injury is obviously very serious, like Buster’s , the DL is an obvious and immediate option. But in general, ALL teams and their medical staffs prefer, if possible, to avoid the DL. Many injuries cannot be fully evaluated right away and/or the healing time known immediately. At any rate, Cave Boy may hit the DL, but it has nothing whatsoever to do Wilson and Beltran going on the DL.

Like Pawlie I was driving when the the EQ hit Richmond today and didn’t feel it (although others did). A 5.8 would normally get my attention but I don’t know what it was by time it was hitting the OBX, I do know some folks around here felt it and it scared the shit out of them. On the weather front I’m a bit more worried about the cat 3 or 4 hurricane that they say will hit us big time (we still have some of the stuff we had packed to evacuate during the fire packed, so that’s a plus). Weird year, had a tornado or two skip by us up the Sound, a 45,000 acre wild fire come within a couple of miles, an earthquake (although centered 4 hours away) and now something that is expected around here, but seems to be coming in hot. Just weird ass weather here in the bible belt.
So August 23, a date where I’m going to just try and stay up late enough to watch these SF Giants for as long as I have power or a roof.
