A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Turning the Page on The (L)astros

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 29, 2011

See, the problem was, the Astros are just too bad for us to play. Now they are running around playing all their kids who are wide eyed with nothing to lose and they did all the things that most major league teams can do: work a walk, steal a bag, bunt a guy over, sac flies, stuff like that. The truth is, we don’t match up very well with a young team that has wheels. I said this last year when SD was beating us regularly: when the other team forces issues with their speed we usually play slow and cautious. And defensive. And not the good kind of *defensive*….

Now we get the Cubs. They’ve got a little bit better record than the Astros and they’ve got a different team—old, slow and overpaid. This is a team we can relate to. And really, it’s a team we can beat. Hopefully the D-backs stumble a little vs Colorado—the Rox are playing fairly inspired ball these days. And then on Friday we sink or swim. We need 2 of 3 and preferably a sweep. We lose 2 or 3 and I will stand up strong and admit I was wrong about the Giants in 2011. But let’s see what happens. Despite only splitting the series with the lowly Astros we were at least playing inspired ball. There was heart shown and that is what they had last year. Take that up another notch and who knows what could happen…….

Well said Flav, you make a very compelling argument. I have to agree with you. I have a sinking feeling about the weekend, though. Dbacks look like they’re just going to roll right through October. The Giants haven’t shown me anything that makes me thing they’re gonna snap out of the funk anytime soon.

well Sarge, I’d say they got some fire from DeRosa throughout the entire series. I LOVED how he got right in that umps face. Now that was some good jawing. I know he’s old and broken down but he’s getting on base, he’s been super clutch and outside of Torres, I don’t know where the fire is gonna come from. It’s certainly not coming from Belt striking out over and over.
Good point made on the last thread about merchandise. Belt has done essentially nothing in his career, he gets a snapping new nickname and the park is littered with giraffe hats and stuffed giraffe’s. I’m all for fans getting into the game but their enthusiasm seems as manufactured as those hats. As Loo pointed out, back in the day the fans made their own Cone Heads. Now that is legit……

Posted this at the end of yesterday’s string, liked the quote from the Little Leaguer so much that I’m puttin’ it here too: “I was just thinking. ‘Oh, God, Oh, God,’ before I was getting in the box,” the 12-year-old Pratto said. “But once I got into the box, I calmed myself by telling myself to just look for a good pitch.” Quote from the Little Leaguer who had the Little League World Series Championship game-winning hit with 2 outs and the bases loaded in the 9th inning. Maybe he can be SF’s new batting coach…. just calm yourselves and look for a good pitch. And.. is that really DeRosa’s wife? Damn, it’s obvious where the dude’s fire comes from…

I thought last Sunday’s come from behind victory in extra innings in Houston was going to turn around our season….WRONG! So hopefully the come from behind extra inning loss yesterday will not be as devastating as I fear.

We are still out of electricity, so I missed Surkamp’s start, how did he look?

Surkamp looked good — 6IP, 1ER, 3BB, 4K. Good enough that Bochy will start him again on Sep 6 against SD. We’ll use this week’s day off (Thu) to skip the #5 slot, come back Fri starting with Cain.

I think the disasters are out of the way, e.g., Houston series, Bozo’s house floating away, etc.

Now, it’s our turn . . . I’m looking for the following this week:

    1. We sweep the Cubs.
    2. Rockies sweep the Diamondbacks.
    3. Bozo finds his gas can, secures his propane tank, and finds a place for his dog to shit, without using a canoe.

good takes, all. torres single and steal was great, as was another clutch play by MDR, and for the second time lately Huff scorches one off the wall. Pitching cost them yesterday tho, from Cain unable to hold late lead to affeldt and ramirez giving up late rockets.

    forrest “smokey” burgess

oil can boyd (whom we used to call “film can”…back in the day those little plastic things could be used to hide a convenient amount of controlled substances)

, bunch of guys named ‘moose” including walt moose moryn who homered off gaylord perry (not sure) for the only hit his team (cubs or cards) got. A grand parent got me a scorebook as a kid, and I can remember listening to this game on radio one summer and score keeping it while outside with radio on.

Any interest in andre ethier? Sounds like he and LA are about done with each other. Assuming Beltran does not return, seems we could do a lot worse in RF. I’ve seen him yank balls out of the yard to left center here (off Sanchez as I recall). Most recent controversy concerning his health (and maybe not just his knees but slightly north of there as well) give you pause?

Well guyz~~~ After yesterday’s latest fiasco one thing became abundantly clear to me. Giants need to take five of the next six to still be in this thing. Flav correctly points out that the Cubs are a team of a type the Giants are built to dominate ~ particularly in our park. Then it’s the Snakes. Giants don’t take at least two of three from them and the season is pretty much down the swirly. At four games out with fewer than 30 to play and the Snakes on a roll lately, this is the math.

We know about the injuries, particularly the loss of our team leader and most effective hitter. Who knows what the WAR for Posey vs Whitey truly happens to be. You look at NoWhitey’s 4 K’s last night and his lack of peg in most situations and those who do those stat things such as WAR need to set up a whole new scale. Would not surprise me a bit if Buster’s blistering presence would not have added seven or eight wins to the total. Add in Freddy for another three or more wins and you have this team up by the comfortable margin some of us had anticipated.

We also know about the mistakes, though there is not as much agreement there. First mistake was to not get a decent SS offseason. Sabean presumed that Tejada would fill in nicely for a year till one of the kids was ready. Second of Brian’s boo-boos was not to get a decent backup catcher during the offseason. Rest of the bad calls have occurred during the season. Ownership should have cut ties with Rowand by the Break. Perhaps with Zito as well. This MUST be done offseason. Belt has been mishandled since his relatively slow start. NOW, in the heat of the race, he is expected to perform, after being yo-yoed all season. Good luck with that. Kid is 23, with less than two full years of organized ball behind him. There have been more mistakes. These are merely some of the more egregious ones. Team is old, slow, bruised, battered and pretty much beaten down AND ironically hitched to the most dominating pitching staff in the game.

Changes will hafta be made. Meanwhile we can hang on the hope for a miracle.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on August 29, 2011 at 10:26 am

“Meanwhile we can hang on the hope for a miracle.” Hardly a fucking miracle. They were out more last year. Look, why don’t those who are teetering just fucking jump?

Why did we not try and claim the Reds catcher Hernandez on waivers? Not getting a catcher at the trade deadline I think has been the most harmful to the team…cant do much with the injuries we have suffered, but management could have done something more proactive in landing a vet catcher…

  12. Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on August 29, 2011 at 10:13 am

With no end in sight to the woeful offense, my biggest concern is that ever since this freefall began July 29, the Snakes have shown they are more than capable of beating up on the mediocre/bad teams while the Giants have not.

    Giants: 0-3 Reds, 1-2 Pirates, 2-1 Marlins, 1-1 Pads, 3-4, Astros = 7-11.
    D-Backs: 3-3 Bums, 3-1 Astros, 3-0 Mets, 3-1 Nats, 3-0 Pads = 15-5.

That’s a 7-game difference. When the slide began, the Giants were 4 up, and now they’re 4 back.

Other than the six games with each other, both teams play opponents with losing records the rest of the way. Given that the D-Backs have gone 15-5 vs. such teams over the last month, it’s not likely the Giants are going to receive much help, which means they damn well better start helping themselves. They just had seven shots at the awful Astros and couldn’t get it done. Will it start tonite vs. the Cubbies? It’s gonna have to if we want to get to October.

Brandi can hit or she can’t,,
The most effective hitter is and was Sandoval, not Posey..
NO ONE, including Stix, thought Tejada would fall off as he has. The most pessimistic guess had him around .260 10-50
For now at least, good thing they didn’t shitcan DeRosa as some wanted..
    Ted: thanks for the E-Mail..
    Berman is a mental deficient..
Since it’s my contest, I’ve already named the September MVP- Sandoval. Thanks for your participation. Polls are closed.

    • stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on August 29, 2011 at 10:34 am

Doesn’t matter what i thought about Tejada when he was signed. I do tend to be a Polly, after all. What does matter is that the scouts, Sabean and the braintrust “misoverestimated” him to quote our exprez in an offhanded kinda way. Maybe nobody could see it coming. But you are always taking more of a chance adopting a guy well out into his thirties, with at best modest defensive skills, for the demanding position of shortstop; than you would be getting a good fielding adequate hitting type. If i could figure that out a well-paid ML exec shouldn’t even have to think about it.

On the World Championship team the most effective hitter was Posey, not Sandoval. Not that Pablo doesn’t have the potential to fill that role…

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on August 29, 2011 at 10:50 am

Pablo was the best hitter THIS year. They both played all of April. You didn’t say shit about last year. It’s Sandoval.
Who did you want instead of Tejada?

  14. Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on August 29, 2011 at 10:32 am

one thing we have for us is that Colorado knows they have to sweep AZ to have any chance to get into this race, so they may smash around their pitching right in time for them to come into SF. I think we have to sweep the Cubs and let’s say Colorado wins two there in AZ, so we would gain two games and get to 2 out heading to this weekend.

Then we just need a simple 2 of 3 from AZ and back to a game out and then I think AZ panics and loses their momentum…

  15. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on August 29, 2011 at 10:42 am

Good take, GH: That is the ideal scenario for SF getting back into this thing. Could happen, tho my stance vs the Giants needing to take five of the next six still stands, as you have just expounded so thoughtfully. Bochy is gonna need to be inspired when it comes to setting his lineup. Curious thing is that NOT ONE Giant has gone on an offensive tear all season. One man erupting into a 7-10 game streak while the great pitching maintains, could turn this thing around. Without somesuch spark SF is dead in the water.

Flav, interesting take on the Astros in your opening paragraph about why they have been beating the Giants lately (what is it? 4-3 for this season?). And there could be a lot of truth to it. It kind of reminds me of when Orson Welles was discussing why CITIZEN KANE was often and continually being called the best American movie ever. He stated something to to the conclusion that if the fim *was* brilliant and revolutionary, it had a lot to do with the fact he had no idea what he was doing at the time. Like the Astros, wide eyed with a feeling of nothing to lose

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on August 29, 2011 at 10:58 am

Actually, Citizen Kane sucked major dick at the box office when it first came out, albeit, it was a critical success . . . The film faded from view soon after but its reputation was restored, initially by French critics and more widely after its American revival in 1956. Just sayin’

Members of the Flap league got news from Bozo (John) this morning regarding Hurricane Irene. Him and his family are fine, but they were affected by the storm. For those of you not having access to the Flap League message board, this was posted by Bozo . . .

“Our house sits 3 up feet and we took in 18″ of water (and mud) in the house, enough to fill the vegetable drawers with the muck. No power for 36 hours (still no phones and the cell service is iffy). Had to put the dog in a canoe to find high enough ground for him to do his biz. Went in water over my knees to save our house propane tank (100 gall) from floating away. 40 – 50 mph sustained wind with gusts up to 80 for 24 hrs, my shed doors blew off and I have no clue where the gas can with the two stoke mix is. Some trees down, parts of someones deck is floating, I can also see the hull of someones row boat poking up. We were able to camp out on the second floor and my wife and I and all our animals are safe. Will be a bit busy cleaning and replacing furniture and appliances.
Oh yeah, we had just gotten someone out to bid raising our house 8ft. Shoulda, coulda, woulda. Will check in when I can. Hope everyone else is OK.”

“Steve, I thought I was going to stroke out PREPARING for the storm, two days over 80 with about 100% humidity I thought I’d stroke out just boarding the windows. We won’t be able to do anything with yard kinda stuff until the water recedes more (it’s dropped quite a bit). My wife works for a car dealership and they sent 5 guys, supplies and an extra truck. The guys helped us move the furniture that will be toast when the mold sets in, bagging for trash stuff, on lower shelves (books,VHS, DVDs, stero system etc). Oh when I said about the water/mud/muck being in the vegetable drawers, I was talking about the vegetable crispers (whatever you call them) in the frig. Most of my downstairs outlets are toast. But, we have found a few that still do work. The good new is the wild fire should be completely out now.”

“Pawlie the storm went up the Sound and I’m right by it, it was tough but the surge is what killed us. That water rose fast. This house was built in the 30s and never took on water, so this hurricane was a bit odd for us (even being living in Hurricane Alley). Most storms will hit on the ocean side and head into the Atlantic, we’ll still get the rains, wind and flooding but nothing like this and it was only a cat 2 (but it did hit us dead on).

On a lighter note, I see my team got a half point more than if the clown manager was involved.
    Cheers all.”

this is the LU that will sink or swim the rest of the season. At least, it should be. And getting Burriss and Ford back for some late inning PR magic is going to be huge. Actually, if Cabrera keeps sucking it wouldn’t surprise me at all if Crawford got a bunch of the playing time at SS the rest of the way (once he’s recalled). Crawford was hitting .190 or whatever? Cabrera is like 3 hits a month better. Not good enough. Get some defense in there ASAP…….

Giants have their hands full with Randy Wells, who was lights out against Atlanta in his last start, outside of one mistake pitch to Chipper Jones. Wells (5-4) has been making the most of his efforts on the hill of late, failing to lose in each of his last five starts, with three wins in the span. He trimmed his ERA to 5.53 in his latest effort, the lowest it’s been since June 4. However, the good news is that his ERA on the road this year is 6.43.

  37. big flavor's avatar big flavor said, on August 29, 2011 at 7:00 pm

Wells was a saber-metric under-radar guy before season started. The Boney One loved him as a dark horse. He had lots of hype on the nerdy saber message boards–I was gonna draft him 27-28th round but he got hurt before season started and stumbled into the season when he did show up. But he’s got good stuff, he could definitely be tough tonight….He’s pitched pretty well the last 6 weeks or so.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 29, 2011 at 7:02 pm

Yeah, I almost picked him up for a spot start on my FL team . . . but, but, but, but . . . I was conflicted. HA.

I’m on the DL so you guys and gals need to pick it up. I’ve got to switch this extension cord to an AC unit so I won’t be able to respond (need to unplug the PC). But it looks like I’ll be able to check in more as time (and insurance money etc) goes by. Go Giants.
Cheers all and you of the Flap Nation please stay well, I don’t think we can produce with as high a DL listing as the Giants.

Hey, I could be wrong, but I believe you have me to blame for the “FUCK YOU, Bozo.” This goes back to our first fantasy league that Flav ran on MLB.com It had that little message board and the Splash and just gone PC and wouldn’t allow any more swear words. You were on vacation down in New Orleans at a jazz festival, and it was the weekend of the LA Derby. You got on my case for touting another loser. The name escapes me now, but it was another loser. You mentioned something about a goddamn camel down in New Orleans. Even posted a pic. Then you made fun of my horse — said it couldn’t even beat a camel. Well, that lead to…FUCK YOU, Bozo!

That was about four years ago. So glad to see you’re OK, and we can make it five years of FUCK YOU, Bozo! 😀
