A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Missing that *Magic* Feeling

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 6, 2011

I think we are right around the 1 year anniversary of that 4-bomb miracle game vs LA. What a game that was. What a time that was. I didn’t get around to doing a new thread yesterday because I was busy but I think it also had a little to do with not wanting to think about the *reality* of where we are this year.  Even though it’s only been a year, I forgot how underwhelming it can be to watch my team turn to “playing the kids”, especially when the kids we have up here are, in my opinion, not part of the core future of this club. I know we didn’t do that yesterday. It’s more of a mind set for teams that are out of it. And right now we are on the outskirts of the periphery of being *in* it……

Last September (and October), every day was filled with so much  excitement and anticipation. I’m not just talking about the team, I’m talking about how it affected my daily life. Every morning I was getting out of bed, actually it was more like bouncing out of bed, driven by a fire I can’t remember ever feeling before. And for roughly 2 months, it permeated my life. If there were 6 people in line at the grocery store there’s a good bet that at least 3 of them would be sporting newly grown beards. Everywhere I went people wanted to talk about the Giants and every conversation was filled with energy and positivity. It was a trip, I was living in a world that was all-Giants all the time. The only world I’d ever known like that was at The Flap. And it had now become  a part of my 3-D life. It was awesome.

Obviously, this September is a different September. It just feels kind of dead to me. Last year as the season passed into Fall I swear to God the trees at my house turned orange AND black. This year, it’ll just be the regular Fall colors. And I’m not *giving up on my team* or any of that nonsense. I will continue to carry with me a low grade level of hope until we are mathematically eliminated…..

But yesterday I was trying to figure out why I wasn’t that motivated to watch the game and why I didn’t go out of my way to put up a new thread. And then I figured out why. It might have had a little to do with a mild hangover of losing Sunday’s game but it didn’t have anything to do with effectively being out of the race. It had to do with missing that unreal feeling from last year. And my way of dealing with not getting to feel it was to put the game and the team out of my mind….

Nothing about this realization changes much for me. I still miss that feeling. I’ve gone through countless September’s that didn’t matter. Unfortunately, when you go through one like 2010 you never want to go through anything other than that ever again. I guess that’s the one main fall out from too much  b-a-s-k-i-n-g….

But that 4-Bomb Miracle game, man, that was some game wasn’t it?

you and i were talking about that at the flapparty. and it turns out it was sunday (murph covered it on the “today in giant’s history” segment before the game). coming from behind is something we haven’t seen in a while with this team. After yesterday’s outpouring of runs, it will be interesting to see what happens today and tomorrow. of late, they follow a good game with two or three of zero to one runs. Breaking that streak might mean that they’re ready to start rolling.

One of the questions Craig asked near the end of the proceedings Sat was if any of us would watch the playoffs with SF out of it. I have to admit I probably wouldn’t. I’d prefer the NL to win the Series, unless possibly Texas gets in, but my level of interest would be low. I don’t have Pops Stargell’s “don’t get too high or too low” feeling; maybe it has more to do with what Craig is talking about.
I’ve seen enough of Belt to make me disappointed, frankly. He played every day for a week btw 8/24 and 8/30, vs. the likes of Cubs and Stros, and went 4 for 24 with 1 BB and 8 Ks. In his last 10 games, 31 ABs, 0 rbis. He had raised his avg up to .243, and since then it has gone down to present .215. His season numbers at ATT are abysmal; .765 OPS on the road, 200 points lower, .565 at home. In order to be able to help the team and hit in the middle (esp if SF does not get Beltran back), he has to pick up the slugging and be a run producer. I’ve just seen too little of it. His numbers for the season look eerily like those of Aubrey Huff, and that’s not good.

The only way we’ll know whether he’s the real deal or not is if he plays. Outside of Posey, he’s a better prospect than anyone we’ve seen in the last several years. Playing him for the rest of this season is highly unlikely to jeopardize the Giants’ slim hopes, given the performance of the alternatives over many more PAs. He’s still on pace to hit ~20 HRs for a full season. I’d like to see if he can at least maintain that over 200 ABs , and if he can keep up the relatively high OBP (relative to his BA, that is) going into next spring.

The disrespect of Sandoval continues. As hitting prospets neither Posey nor Belt are/were close.

It’s interesting how we all have our own highlight memories from last season. I don’t even remember the game that BF is talking about. I’ll need more details.
But yeah- everything BF said…..that’s how I feel about the ’11 season at this point.
As for watching the playoffs….my wife’s a Braves fan so I’ll be seeing their games, and I wouldn’t mind seeing them go the distance. Anyone but the Philly/Yankee/Red Sox triumverate of super-high payroll arrogance. I could even pull for the Rangers to finally get their championship rings.

I’ll second Blade’s take on the stalling that elongates a game unnecessarily. Those boston/yanks games are ridiculous. I can remember as a kid watching games on TV (we’re talking black and white here) from the Caribbean (might even have been cuba) where the home plate ump would call a strike on the batter if he did not get into the box in a timely manner after the previous batter appearance was over.
As with everything in baseball (replay etc) there would be endless haggling over “the spirit of the game”, but it’s doable, and imo would be a tremendous improvement over quality of the current product on the market.

Belt is no Ort-Rod or Linden. At least, I don’t think he is, we’ll see. I don’t recall if either of those other 2 were ever ranked in the top 20 prospects in all of baseball. I think what we have found, and we all should have known this, is that the Buster Posey’s of the world don’t come along too often (where they hit the field running and don’t have any let downs throughout the season). Belt looks like he needs some time and I’d rather see him get it up here, when the games start to mean nothing. He’s proven he can hit AAA pitching. Well, Ort-Rod and Linden and Bowker could, too…..

It wasn’t easy to tune in yesterday after the lost weekend vs. AZ, but at least the Giants put on a good show with the Pablo bombs and all those K’s by MadBum. Maybe he’ll get that first career CG before the season’s over. Tonight we get Surkamp’s second start and Pill’s debut, so there’s reason to keep watching for at least one more game.

Baggs reported, “Bochy and Pat Burrell made sure the players were aware of some recent history: The 2007 Phillies were seven back with 17 to play before overtaking the New York Mets to win the N.L. East.” I wonder what they said when they got to Beltran.

Damn, we are losing and already people are bashing the rookies. WTF, Torres came up last year and had a great year and he was a god send, even though it took him forever to do that in the bigs. Belt struggles his rookie year, and he does not carry the team to the playoffs so he is no longer a good prospect?? Lets go out next year and get a bunch of Tejadas and Cabreras, Get an all vet group out there on the field. Losing has turn some of you guys into a bunch of whiners. Some of you need to get it together, not repeating is not the end of the world and it certainly does not mean the Giants won’t be competitive next year. Expectations were so high that when we all came crashing back to earth the finger pointing has begun. I will bask forever. I was able to see the Giants win a WS. Yes I want another, but the Giants are not the Yankees (thank god), so it might not happen right away but I will still cheer for my Giants.

    • willieD's avatar willieD said, on September 6, 2011 at 10:13 am

Not what i’m saying at all. Belt’s postion player teammates (other than Sando) are the ones who haven’t been able to “carry the team to the playoffs”. I’d like nothing better than for SF to get younger and more athletic, and have said so for a couple years. I even wanted Ford up here, but he is just not a good enough hitter at this level to be a regular. Hopefully next season is different and there is less dead wood.
Unfortunately, so many of the others we have kept around and played regularly have not measured up to last year standards either. Unitl we acquired Keppinger, replacing Sanchez was difficult, and Posey has been impossible. Not sure about Crawford long term, but he hasn’t been an offensive spark.
And that ‘s where I am with belt. James has a good point in that if he had same number of ABs as Huff, SF would have been better off. I’d like to see him up the slugging pct. and be someone SF can count on middle order to drive in runs around Sando and Posey, and pick up those OPS numbers at ATT, and I don’t have an issue with playing him.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on September 6, 2011 at 10:19 am

Crawford is the third best SS prospect in the system. He’s being treated like a Posey-level prospect by many. He has never hit above A ball and there is no indication he ever will. Yet he already has a cult. And the next person who leaves Sandoval out when talking about recent prospects– well, it will be a curious omission.

I’ve fucking explained this over and over: other than when he made the team out of camp( and bombed), Belt has not been recalled to be a regular- he was recalled to strenghten their left handed bench. A case cannot be made that part time duty fucks up him or any other rookie-it’s an urban myth.
His job is to be ready when he’s called upon, he’s yet to show that he is.
And, BTW, Sandoval was kind of a good prospect, as well. As a hitter, certainly better than Posey or Belt.

On our way back from the beach, it was funny (pathetic) to listen to the callers into Marty Lurie. I rarely listen to KNBR other than the games, but Pablo was catching a ton of heat for being an ‘undisciplined’ hitter. 2 or 3 guys in a row (and about 9 overall) were saying that the Giants should trade him, or force him to be more selective at the plate. That his ABs were the signs of a biggler ‘organizational’ problem with not getting enough walks/’better’ ABs work the count. Blah blah blah. I was frankly more than a little shocked that Lurie didn’t call these guys out.

Shit. Look at Sondoval’s average. Hi production. Without the wrist injury, he’d likely have been around 95 RBIs and a .300 average. Yeah, he’s the fucking problem. Trade the most consistent hitter this year.

Sorry i missed the Flapp party.

I’m surprised Lurie didn’t call these guys out either. He usually does. Extremely tactfully but gets his point accross. But hell, everyone that calls radio shows have bitched about Sandoval’s pitch selection 3 years running now. What should be obvious but apparently isn’t is Sandoval can hit *anything*. His dropoff last year was due to a lack of aggression, maybe a drop of bat speed but not pitch selection. I’d think he proved that already in 2009. If he’s healthy, leave him alone

And for the daily reality check- Belt was NEVER going to supplant Huff this year. Again- this the reality of it. Huff was no Tejada, clearly done, or Rowand, into his 4th year of a big contract. They were not sitting a guy in the 1st year of a 2 year 22 million contract- a guy with proven big numbers for years, for a rookie who had only shown he could match Huff’s WORST numbers.

AL baseball is boring as hell. I rarely watch it anyway, so those games can go on for days for all I care.

Might as well be fricking cricket.

As far as the AL goes, I’d love to see Texas beat the shit out of everyone else. Mainly because that would mean no Boston and no Yankees. The hand wringing around that happening would be epic. Yet again.

Then Fuck Selig would have to come up with some new rules to ensure that either NY or Boston gets a special pass to the AL pennant.

  15. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 6, 2011 at 10:49 am

Preface this (again) by saying that the Giants still have a chance, albeit not a good one. That being said, I was not surprised by the AccuScore simulations that view the AZ lead as nearly insurmountable, improving the D’backs’ playoff odds by 15.6 percentage points this week. Arizona is now 99.2 percent likely to win the division.

However, I still like the attitude of Jim Carrey in Dumb and Dumber . . . \

Lloyd: What do you think the chances are of a guy like you and a girl like me… ending up together?
Mary: Well, Lloyd, that’s difficult to say. I mean, we don’t really…
Lloyd: Hit me with it! Just give it to me straight! I came a long way just to see you, Mary. The least you can do is level with me. What are my chances?
    Mary: Not good.
Lloyd: You mean, not good like one out of a hundred?
Mary: I’d say more like one out of a million.
    [pause]
    Lloyd: So you’re telling me there’s a chance… *YEAH!*

my comment about “not everyone is a buster Posey” was specifically related to how prospects are rated by the major publications and that the highly ranked ones are the ones that come up with all the expectations. (that’s why I mentioned Linden and Or-Rod since I don’t remember them being rated high like Belt and Posey). I don’t think Sandoval was ever drafted so there was no hoopla surrounding him there. I think he MIGHT have gotten noticed by BA somewhere in 2008 but he definitely wasn’t one of the more highly ranked prospects when he started his pro career out. In fact, he took off in 2008 at San Ho and then Connecticut. Maybe BA noticed him before he came up but I don’t recall it……

The window remains open to win this division next year, with no one a clear favorite. How long it stays that way depends in part on the Dodgers straightening out — with their potential resources, they should dominate the West the same way the Phillies rule the NL East. That being said, they and San Diego will probably not be a factor, but who knows for certain?

It also depends on the Diamondbacks’ young pitching (if prospects Tyler Skaggs and Trevor Bauer are the real deal, pairing with Ian Kennedy and Daniel Hudson, Arizona could be the new San Francisco insofar as pitching is concerned).

The Denver Post is saying, “The Rockies have to reward their strong show of support from fans. That means diving back into the free-agent pool for an outfield slugger. The Rockies will make a strong play for Michael Cuddyer, and it will likely take a three-year deal to lure him from the Twins. They should also see what it would take to get Carlos Beltran. Or Josh Willingham. Or even Lance Berkman. If not happy with the price, try trading for Minnesota’s Denard Span. Can’t address the outfield? Then go hard after David Wright until the Mets hang up. And make a run at likely Cubs free agent Aramis Ramirez. And as I have said repeatedly, adding a proven starter is a must — whether that’s Rodriguez, or how about Matt Garza or James Shields?”

In short, the NL West is such that a team can reinvent itself in one season — see Arizona.

  24. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 6, 2011 at 12:01 pm

good point Blade– If Skaggs and Bauer fulfill their high expectations then AZ is going to be a pain in our ass for several years to come. I remember when I saw AZ snagged Bauer, a guy I talked about last Winter, and I was just like “fuck us”….

  26. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on September 6, 2011 at 12:14 pm

I hope the Giants don’t accept the status quo in the outfield next year. I believe Stix has pushed for Cuddyer too and I am in complete agreement with him.

The Rockies will DEFINITELY MAKE A PLAY FOR FREE AGENTS THIS YEAR. Why? Simply because they have no one in their farm system. More important, as I said earlier, the “band wagon” fans will bolt next year if they don’t sense the front office doing something significant in upgrading the team. Quite frankly, fans were “fed” a line this year about the Rockies being the team to beat and they are pissed for buying into the hype.

The Rockies aren’t years away from getting fixed. But they can’t stand pat. There aren’t enough young players to change the course, with catcher Wilin Rosario perhaps providing the lone impact next year. Tulo and CarGo are entering their prime. The time is now to get them help. Until player development catches back up, the payroll needs a bump to land a bat and veteran arm.

In many ways, Timmy and Cain are entering their prime too – You guys are near the “pulse” of the team and know far better than I do whether they will make a sincere effort to upgrade the roster. I hope so, because here in the Rockies backyard – where I live – it would seem that they will “re-tool” significantly next year.

The tone in here the past few days has been that of resignation, save a few of you…Yeah, see the forest for the trees but the forest hasn’t burned yet and the trees still have their dignity and defending champs gives them something to cling to as a team…

Their fans (Guys and gals like flappers) need to get behind them make them see they haven’t been written off yet…I don’t know how many of you played sports at higher levels but I did and it’s true that having a confident or at least supportive fan base can provide just what is needed to cause a title run-even in times like these…

Over at the Splash, there has been an ongoing ‘debate’ about: The Jints chances and what constitutes a ‘real fan.’ As long as these guys are not numerically eliminated, and no matter how poorly they can and have looked at times, if I were a G-fan, I’d be behind them 100%

I’m in a unique situation, rooting for LA to overtake the G’s and the D-backs is still a possibility-one that I don’t want to see take place due to LA’s ownership and all that the playoffs could provide for McDickhead…but I’m still watching their games and pleased to see them doing well, despite yesterdays game. I’m still a fan of the team but want McCourt gone and no Chinese, thankyaverrymush…

Sandy, thank you for your considerate post. One thing, I count myself as one of the “pollys” who still believe we are not out of it. That being said, it may be bleak, but we still have a mathematical chance and as I and others have indicated (Loo, Twin, Flav), other teams have come back from worse deficits.

Plenty of scenarios where we can make up ground – the one I have noted (and I believe Twin has too), is that we just make up 4 games between now and the Snakes series at Chase. In short, we’ll worry about the other 3 games then. Anything better than the aforementioned scenario is gravy.

blade, you’re welcome. It wasn’t being considerate but seeing how down many seem to be when the Jints aren’t out of anything which caused me to post.

I agree the most likely way to catch them is by chipping away at their lead…but the team has to show up everyday the way they did last year…it’s interesting to see that it is Schierholtz that is out and DeRosa being in a position to provide what Nate did at the end of last year, I wish him luck. If SF can chip away at the lead, then it does become a season ending fight with the Snakes…

Pollyannaism is what the G’s need from their fans right now-not dissension or abandonment…McWhoops on the other hand…PFFFT!

Organized team sports is the opium of the Proletariat to further advance the Party’s survival in the Great Conflict, providing unity among the cadres. Second base should be selflessly shared, not stolen as a capitalist mongrel would do for elevating his position among the workers. “He’d probably get more respect if his OBP was the same as now but his BA was 50 points lower..”

No, it would be the same.

The other day you suggested that identical OPSs could have different values to a team depending on the ratio of BA to OBP. Just for the heck of it, over the weekend I took Pablo’s then current line of

    296/338/494

Substitute Pat the Bat’s BA of 234 for the 296 and keeping everything else, including Pablo’s PAs, doubles, and triples, constant, while allowing the number of HRs, walks and singles to vary. Now, in order for the Bat to achieve a 494 SP and 338 OBP while hitting just 234, his HR total would have to be 20 (Total bases adjusted proportionally downward from Pablo’s 177). The difference between the 2 players would be

29 BBs plus 4 HRs vs. 29 singles

Looking at the cumulative stats for the NL this year, about 10 of those 29 singles would come with men on base. 5 would occur with RISP. 1 or 2 of the HRs would occur with a man on base.

Distinguishing between one 832 OPS and another is splitting hairs. OPS stands as a composite measure of offensive value, and has a closer correlation to aggregate run production than BA does.

Another argument that has been trotted out more than once is that you need more aggressive hitters in the middle of the order. Here’s one analysis that features the biggest “let the next guy drive ’em in” pussy to ever ruin the middle of a Giants line up (don’t forget to do the assignment at the end!):

The thing about Pablo is- we’ve still never seen what he could do in a full season, if he stayed healthy all season. I’d still like to see him slow his ABs down a little when there are runners on base. He gets pretty amped up, like he has to make something happen quickly. He’s gotten better about that this season, but still gives away too many ABs. That’s the cool thing about the dude, though- he’s still getting better, and has that enormous power. And he’s fun to watch play. On a fun-to-watch-play meter, he is very high. I hope he’s the Giants thirdbaseman for a long, long time.
