A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

A Sign of Good Things to Come: Another Walk Off Win

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 14, 2011

Earlier in the year it seemed we’d win games like last night at least once or twice a week. Maybe that’s a sign of something to come. We’ve won 3 in a row and are playing loose, crisp, winning baseball right now. I understand the odds against us but has anyone checked Atlanta’s schedule? Yes, they now get 3 against the Mets at home. But after that they go on the road for 6 and then finish at home against Philly. Imagine if the Giants keep winning and they are only a couple game out with the last home stand to play. How infuriating will it be to watch Country Bumkin Manuel rest half his guys on that last series. But you know what? In that situation, I don’t think he would. Philly is desperate to get a piece of us and show the East Coast that last year was a fluke. I think they would try to eliminate the Braves to get another shot at us in the playoffs. So if we keep winning and the Braves keep stumbling and my theory plays out in the final home stand of the season……

“so, you’re tellin’ me there’s a chance?”

Absolutely.

Today is fairly critical, they all are from here on out. Look, Colorado is completely *sweepable*. They’re already looking at Rosario at catcher for the rest of the year, their pitching sucks and Car-Go and Tu-Lo couldn’t be more focused on individual stats right now. If we head in there with a purpose and a plan we could easily sweep them…..

I’m just sayin’……

And finally, I’d like to point out that since I made the “Sun Dressed Chick” the official Flap Mascot, we have won three games in a row…..

props to the east coast guys who stayed til the end…giants put me to sleep after deRosa first crack at hero didn’t work out. But Nip is right, w is a w.
I thought about this one when it happened: Cain walked Darnell, and then Lopez came in to face Blanks, who hit the ball Pablo turned into a force out. Then came the doubles by Cunningham off Lopez and the rbi one by bartlett off Mota. So why is Cain charged with the first run, even tho he never faced the guy who actually scored it, which was blanks? Both guys lopez faced scored, tho he is only charged with one of them.

As I speculated when some were asking why the fuck they kept DeRosa around, Bochy undoubtedly wanted him for his experience down the stretch. It may or not be too late, but he’s certainly bearing that out. While he isnt driving the ball in the sense of HR power, he’s hitting the ball HARD. He might be the September MVP so far. I have zero doubt that if he’d been DFAed, another contender would have pioked him up

The pogoing in the middle of the field at the end of every walk off ranks right after the skyward gesture as a tiresome, rote exercise. Good for Beltran.

One very little thing I did notice: Beltran went back to grab a ball he had unsuccessfully tossed into the stands at the end of the inning. Presumably, he again tossed it to the fans.

You’re right, players in the last several years care a lot more about winning than the old timers did. I look forward to an increasing array of ritualized, public demonstrations of enthusiasm and gratitude. We’ll be able to create a team chemistry stat pretty soon.

  9. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 14, 2011 at 11:12 am

Hey, that’s the way it is these days. I don’t think there’s anything contrived about it. Not the way the teams has been struggling in recent memory. All these players see this kind of shit on ESPN and think, hey we should do something too. The bowling pin thing of Prince Fielder sprinigs to mind. That was a little more contrived, but it’s what it was. Kinda funny. Kinda annoying.

The thing about baseball is it’s eons behind the shit that routinely goes on in the NFL.

Criminy. Vernon Davis used to go bat-shit crazy over a 12 yard catch for a 1st down. Every TD was a goddamn 15 yard unsportsmanlike . . .

Flemming was talking earlier about how Belt will improve with more ABs, getting to learn the pitchers, etc., then with two strikes, he took a fastball down the tube for strike three. I checked and he will be 24 at the start of next year, Crawford will be 25. That’s not young; another year or two and you are no longer perceived as a true prospect. It may be that both would’ve benefited from staying in the minors this year–the reward of being brought up might make you think your stuff, including flaws that don’t show at AA, are OK–but the way things went for the club that wasn’t in the cards.

The Giants have got to be feeling good about themselves and with their ability to finally hit. They know the pitching is not faltering and they know that just a meager offense will get them WINS. But Arizona , to me,
is playing over their heads and combining Giants pressure with constant wins and a little doubt popping in
the D-Backs minds could combine into a more important series on the 23rd….. In any case I can sleep well tonight with one eye on the LA/D-Back game tonight………. could be 7 1/2 games out…..

Here’s the lousy unbelievable news from CBS Sports online:

Managing partner and CEO Bill Neukom will not return to the Giants next season, the San Jose Mercury News reports.

Neukom, who has overseen the Giants since succeeding Peter Magowan in 2009, was asked to leave by the executive committee after a series of disagreements over the three years Neukom has been in control. Larry Baer, the team’s president and COO, is expected to succeed Neukom, who may yet stay in the organization at a different position, although it won’t be his choice.

Neukom, Microsoft’s former top attorney, angered partners by determining on his own how to spend the additional money that the Giants received due to winning the World Series. Starting last October, Giants merchandise rose $500,000 a month. Couple that with a rabid fan base that has nearly sold out the park, and there’s been plenty of cash as a result. He boosted payroll and added new technology to the baseball department with the money, counter to the executive committee’s wish that the money be used as a rainy-day fund. The committee was so far out of the loop that they would sometimes read of Neukom’s moves in the paper before being apprised.

The passing of Neukom could potentially clear the way for Oakland to finally move to San Jose. Neukom has been staunchly opposed to giving up San Jose as a territorial right, despite the A’s gifting S.F. these rights years back. While S.J. is further away from San Francisco than Oakland, it’s also the home of many technological companies, which could affect the Giants’ sponsorship rates if the A’s moved to San Jose, a question that has been in limbo for years. Commissioner Bud Selig hasn’t offered up any opinion on the matter that has been on his desk for years, but Neukom stepping down could be the jolt needed to re-energize talks. But for now, it’s impossible to know what impact, if any, Neukom’s departure will have on the A’s move to San Jose.

Given that Neukom’s successor worked right under Neukom and is expected to stay in power, the Giants shouldn’t be adversely affected by the transition, although the executive committee’s push to have the cash as a rainy-day fund instead of investing it back to the team in the hopes of keeping up competition as well as raising the qualify of baseball operations’ tools is a potential glimpse into a future San Francisco team run under tighter financial constraints.

For the first time in history, the Giants have a payroll over $100 million, coming in around $120 million for 2011. The $95 million spent in $2010 was also at the time a franchise-high, but the team has sustained $90-million payrolls in the past. While it’s only good business practice to hold some money back for future investments, the Giants were also in a prime position to significantly increase and retain additional business. In addition, infrastructure upgrades in the front office can be appealing to potential employees, raising the talent. Without intimate knowledge of Giants finances, it’s difficult to determine what the correct course of action was. As Neukom is finding out, though, going against the executive committee and making a disagreement out of it is not the way to go.

James is right: the celebration BS is truly annoying, at all levels. I can’t get over how special teams guys in football jump all over the place after a tackle, when that responsibility is the only reason they are on the team in the first place.
belt got a double? good for him. He is undoubtedly in the mix for an OF spot next year, but no way SF dumps Huff in a contract year,so he is gonna have to fight for a full time spot. I don’t give a rat’s ass what he is projected to do, Belt’s goal should be Huff season of 2010, 26 bombs, including a dozen out of ATT. 2011 is a learning exp.; anyone see the stuff mentioned on baggs blog about bochy getting in his face after he threw his shit on the way back to the dugout after a K?

really think so james? (Honest, i’m not being sarcastic, I respect your opinion). He doesn’t care about anything except his own numbers, and seeks only to pad them for a contract?
why leave the mets, going nowhere, for a less than hitters park like ATT, which he had just seen before AS?
I think he wanted to win..he didn’t get off to a good start, but he isn’t exactly alone in being a disappointment. And his over all numbers in SF, despite lack of run production, are pretty high.
        Smoke and mirrors?

Willie, see above exchange with Decap. I was trying to being ironic. I would love to see a hitter like Beltran anchor the offense next year.

And what does the sentence “added new technology to the baseball department” even mean? How can a baseball team have a “baseball department”?

Ha, I read this a few times before I discovered it’s comedic genius.

  41. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 14, 2011 at 8:23 pm

there is no way that the season ticket holders stand for this. They are flooding the correct emails addresses right now. No fucking way Neukom is out……..

  42. Big flavor's avatar Big flavor said, on September 14, 2011 at 8:34 pm

With very little info available about this, I’m also clinging to the possibility that this is a move by Neukom to power play some dumbfucks off the Giants Committee. Maybe he let all this happen without a fight just to get it to the press— knowing a revolt would follow.

  43. PawlieKokonuts's avatar PawlieKokonuts said, on September 14, 2011 at 8:42 pm

What corporate malarkey. The exec. committee wants us to be the Pittsburgh Pirates? Silly and moronic. Grow up: we won a World Series, kids.

I sent handwritten notes to Neukom and Sabean last November.

Unfortunately, Magnus, it will stand, because season ticket holders are not gonna boycott over this.

    It’s an outrage.

    • Big flavor's avatar Big flavor said, on September 14, 2011 at 8:53 pm

Why not? The corporate guys won’t give s shit but if I’m a season ticket holder and I just found out the owner (who just won me a works series) was ousted because he was dumping $ into the team instead of some fucking rainy day laundering fund I wouldnt hesitate to climb the highest peak and scream “suck my mother fucking dick!” as I canceled my season tix and watched next year’s game on my big screen. Too long of a sentence? Fuck grammar I am fuming right now….

      • PawlieKokonuts's avatar PawlieKokonuts said, on September 14, 2011 at 10:03 pm

but that’s my point: people will NOT cancel

read the announcement on ESPN transactions — all prettified; don’t know what to make of that; have not checked the spin control at Giants site

but I’m not backpedaling from Merc News take: looks like a coup d’etat

Baer proves yet again to be the master of office politics. He may not be behind the move but it’s not like he turned the spot down (not that I blame him). Neukom always struck me as a guy fixated on results regardless of salary or stature. He is/was good for the club and this is a shortsighted move in my opinion. As a long time SF Giants fan I am sad and disappointed to hear this news.

OK, cool.. sorry I misread your intention; I agreed with what you said with Decap.
And I also agree that if beltran doesn’t return, SF would be highly served by acquiring someone who can put up .900 OPS to take his place in the middle of the order. I’m convinced one guy like that added to Posey and Sando makes all the difference in the world.
Further, what other teams in the NL would be interested? LA if they lose Ethier I could see, but most other contenders either need pitching much worse or could not afford the guy due to other commitments like brewers cards philly.

This news on Neukom is total horseshit. I will sleep on it, and have more to say as I gather more info.. But, I’m saying Baer running the operation under the thumb of this veiled 10-member Exec Committee is absolute crap. This is way more important that the odd personnel move in the offseason. It is not good news at all….
