Going 6-1 The Rest of the Way
Lots of good things happened last night. To wit:
1) they beat up on Eveland allowing me to sleep last night
2) they ensured that the Dodgers couldn’t put a fork in us
3) the D-Backs “Viewing Party” was canceled
4) I got to use Pill as POTG again. I will never tire of searching for POTG pics for that dude…..
5) It kept the series this weekend relevant, at least for Friday’s game.
6) Oh, and they kept my 90 win total hope alive. It would have been technically *alive* even if they’d lost but I still like to have a game to play with since it looks like Surkamp is going to be getting a start in Arizona….
The Flap Fantasy League Standings
(things are sorting themselves out in the top 3 and Ed has pretty much locked up 11th place. That should feel like 1st place, my man, after the way your year started)

What did I say??? I will pick up Eveland in our league and that would guarantee a Gigante victory…
his shittiness pretty much guaranteed that we’d win last night 🙂
It is jersey day at work, so I am still proudly wearing Giants gear, hat and T Shirt
I am totally not superstitious, but I am wearing my Giants high socks today. I got these socks at one of the Giants games. I wear them every once in a while.
Got back from biz trip to Vegas in time to hear SF up early, then vogs is gone by the 5th after giving up the bomb. No shame, Kemp’s having a monster year, but Vogs lately doesn’t last much past 5, and has great run support (leads the rotation with 4.13 per). Just like surkamp (I said this last week too), if you get him 8 it’s probably enough.
I think the last thing you do with this guy is give him a big reward…second half he is way more hittable, and the ERA is up quite a bit. He is not in same category as Cain Linc or bum, imo. I’m just skeptical, and think it’s very likely we will never see anything like his first couple months again.
ATL is in free fall, and can definitely be taken to the canvas., just maybe not by us. Interesting numbers put out today by Knapp too on how few 100 game winners take the whoe thing: since 1980 only 40 of 30, and since 1986 only 2 of 25.
So out of last night’s heroes (Font, Pill, Christian), what do you think going forward? Are these guys anything more than ST candidates for a back up job? What have they shown you?
Snarkk challenged me to Google about Huff smoking, and all I found was this, which, as near as I can tell, is an anonymous blogger who is joking around with Huff. And this whole blog entry may be bogus for all we know. Is this all the “evidence”?
Not that it’s THAT big a deal to me whether Huff smokes or not, but I’d be curious to see what source Snarkk was talking about. If this is the source, it’s pretty weak.
http://www.procanes.com/files/b2aee77df78a3151f069b63857bf206e-7064.html
should be …”since 1980 only 4 out of 30…” etc. Teams with 90 win seasons often topped those that won way many more regular season games. Philly ain’t won nothing yet except the NL East is all I’m saying.
At the meeting I was at are a number of New Yorkers. One guy who is the only mets fan of the group and very likeable guy, thinks it doesn’t matter what Yanks rotation is (my ? to the NY guys), Philly romps. I told him that’s what I heard last year, and we’ll see.
here’s another story. Admittedly, it’s a quote from a fan but still……
http://deadspin.com/5797811/some-drunk-giants-players-got-into-it-with-drunk-fans-at-a-hockey-game
“but still”? Thats an old story and there were many people there. I have never seen any account from anyone else backing up this fan’s account. And we all know damn well they’d be coming out of the woodwork
coming out of the woodwork to say what? That he smokes? That’s absurd.
The douche nozzle also claimed that Huff was drunk and obnoxious. Of course others would back up this dickhead if it were true.
He supposedly got into it with a Cap’s fan- nothing from this guy. The tale teller refers to his pal Juneau- nothing from him. Sorry, gotta do better. It has been determined, however, that grown men go out at night and ocassionaly, gulp, egad… drink alcoholic beverages..
all I did was post a link to something that referenced Huff smoking and I said that it was just a fan’s account.
It’s not a BFD- it was the “but still”. I’ll finish it: “But still, I should add that this is an unsupported anonymous account that has never been confirmed.”
something else from the NY guys. Very knowledgeable guy and former Am Legion coach was hesitant to give the MVP to Granderson (my ? to them), and brought up Cano’s name, certainly not unreasonable. The Mets fan questioned whether he is really a 40 HR guy or not, and mentioned HGH. In his words, “Everyone in baseball is a suspect.”
Snarkk isn’t too choosy about the “evidence” if it’s on one of his whipping boys..
I had posted they only have 6 left, forgot tonight’s game. So breathe easy, even I make mistakes. But I still think rooting for 7-0 is a pretty good idea.
Can you do me a favor and not delete comments on this thread? You were wrong about the number of games left. I know that’s something you claim to never be. “but still” I don’t want you fuckjng up the time stamps on my thread just cause you posted something designed to call me out on a mistake when in reality it was you who made the mistake.
Rooting for 6-1 just because you called 14-2 is pretty weak. But sorry about the deletion- rather fucking obviously I acknowledged it was my error, though.
I think I made it pretty clear that “6-1 gives me a game to play with.” I’m not “rooting” for it.
Hey what are you guys doing out there? My clock on the wall changed to 2:42, oh never mind.
I tried to correct a mistaken post of mine and evidently fucked up the “time stamp”. My apologies.
Twin, I was just kidding. I’m three hours ahead back here and the joke fell flat.
Well, Craig had said I fucked up the time stamp, I thought maybe you were referring to that. No biggie. On chewing tobacco, I’m sure we’ve all known of someone with pancreatic cancer. They go fast, dead before he can sign the name on the will. Tummy ache one day and feet up in a couple weeks..
Why is it so hard to believe a pro athlete smokes cigs? Many have in the past, and obviously MLB is ground zero for chew. The U of Miami article Zumie cites on Huff the alum mentions the smoking. OK, one piece on the issue may be a crapshoot, but why would a feature article on an alum make a point of the smoking caricature, if not relevant? The Deadspin republished article on the Caps game is a second one. Deadspin is a pretty darn good sports website that digs up alot of info sports people don’t want the public to know. You didn’t believe its articles on MLB teams finances, either? Why would that story be published if not materially true — it was in public at a hockey game for many to see. The details can easily be refuted. Huff denied the drinking part went that far to Schulman on May 4th (you can look it up), but there’s no denial of the smoking part. Here’s a third piece by a pro-Giants local website — 6 months BEFORE the Caps game incident — fawning over Huff’s new contract and his personality, and mentions his smoking as part of the package. http://bayareabias.com/giants/138-welcome-back-huff-daddy.html. There’s references in the tweetosphere, less reliable sure, but out there. I didn’t make this stuff up. The material is out there, from different places. When multiple sources say the same thing, I don’t ignore it. I’ll put the issue to Baggarly, he can ignore it or answer the question…
Why don’t you contribute to a non-judgemental discussion of athletes and smoking? In “B”. Maybe you have something of actual value to share.
My contribution is obvious and to the point. Since multiple sources say he smokes, maybe that has contributed to his poor performance on the field and obvious out of shape running the basepaths. Maybe the trainers need to look at it. You have harangued incessantly about the In N Out diet. Now, suddenly, smoking and its possible impact on a Giant player’s performance is off limits?….
Snarkk grab a cigar and down a few shots! No one will tell.
The “Cap” tale was totally unreliable. If you had done proper research in the first place, the link you provided today had some credibility. And I have not even inferred that the topic is off limits, I’m devoting a page to it, with non-judgemental, reasonable posts welcome.

Actually, I’ve rarely “harangued” about Tim’s diet, it’s mostly been a joke for months now. But we know that most young people “occasionally”, as you describe his patropnage, eat at fast food restaurants. BFD. I’d submit that making it a point that he used In ‘n Out as a training diet, suggests a helluva lot more than that once in a while treat you absurdly claim….
That ain’t a burger, that’s chewing tobacco. “Health experts say smokeless tobacco can cause cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus and pancreas. Pechacek said the CDC is concerned that high school students perceive smokeless tobacco to be safer than cigarettes.”
Thanks to Chuckles for reminding me that Tim uses tobacco. Now, I’m not condemning him for that, for the terrible diet, the dope, for any of his foibles that prove he is not without fault. I would say he’s not looking like a candidate for Role Model of the Year, either.
decent Hardball Times article for you old timers:
http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/blog_article/15000-days-since-a-rare-marichal-feat/
Obviously, career Whip shows these guys were pretty darn good on their own. But, I’ll bet they had pretty good run support, too, to get to 200Ws before 100Ls. Marichal had the 60s Gmen. Ford the Yankees, though they weren’t always great during his tenure, but certainly in the 50s they were. Pedro may have been the best. The guy had stuff, stuff, stuff, and did not get the benefit of the higher mound like the older guys. Huge Dodger screw up letting him go early…
Career WHIP:
Grove: 1.28
Ford: 1.22
Martinez: 1.05 (best was 0.74 in 2000 with Bos)
Marichal: 1.10
FYI: Gibson 1.19; Koufax 1.11 (best was 0.87 and 0.86 in ’63 and ’65 when he went 25-5 and 26-8).
Denny McLain, last pitcher to win 30, went 31-6 in ’68 for the Tigers, sported a WHIP of 0.91, ERA 1.96. He started 41 games, threw 28 complete games over 336 IP, 4.44 K/BB ratio. Doubtful any of the young starters these days will throw near 28 complete games in their entire careers. It was a different time…
Jesus. Those stats are unthinkable this day and age
BTW, the fact that I read this article in no way means I admit to being an “:old timer”.
Thank you…. ya whippersnapper…
SFGate is reporting a breakthrough for Bryan Stow. He had another medical procedure done and is talking today.
Very good news.
Yeah, saw that Bozo. Good to hear that he is improving.
I read it, too. The thing is, he’s apparently talking slowly, but remembering who he is, who his kids are and asking for them, etc. So his brain seems still intact in some key areas. He’s still who he was before, in important respects. That’s huge for his family. From personal experience, when a loved one doesn’t recognize you anymore as family, it’s not cool, and it appears he’s not that way. Very good news…
It’s good news yes but best to keep expectations in check. With brain injuries to his extent he may remember the name of his 3rd grade teacher but not remember what he had or if he even had lunch 10 minutes ago. That’s why his doctors have been so careful and circumspect in what they’ll say on his recovery. With the brain, no one knows when rehability plateaus
Good point, Ted. You are right. I liken the brain to an amazing but flawed hard drive — sometimes it finds the file, sometimes it doesn’t…
I love Fontenot’s new nickname…
Little Lord Fontenot?
“Oh Goody”
I’m trademarking it, before Mars or Hershey or Pat Riley get a hold of it…
I was thinking of trademarking Knowing Dude Nod until I saw that commercial zumie put up yesterday
Fondue?
I don’t know whether or not Lincecum chews tobacky but that film on a loop above looks like bubble gum, not chaw
Lots of guys do both at the same time. I think he’s stuffing one of those little packet things they sell now.
It’s training tobacky.. actually, citing Snarkk’s rationale on Huff and cigarette use, there are far too many reports that say Tim does chew to discount them..
I hope he does not…
Mets are battling in the 9th…
Tied!!!
Ahead 8-6!!!! 6 run 9th!!!
Wow. Mets up 8-6. 6 rubns in the top of the 9th . . .
The Cards just lost as crushing a game as you could imagine…
Great comeback by the Mets, and nice catch by Pridie for the last out, anything to help that ‘pen.
Believe!
Bumgarner will be lights out tonight and the offense will thump Kuroda.
WOW! New intra-day 1st place in the Flap League . . . Congrats Macdog (AKA Crazydiamonds)!
You have dethroned the Flavster . . . at least for the moment. Not certain, but it must be at least 2 months since we’ve had someone other than Flav in first.
Pffffft! So much for the changing of the guard . . . Flavster back in first 🙂
that was his 19 minutes of fame 🙂
LQTM
Fate works in strange ways. Thought to watch the Mets game in the 9th and saw what the Cards have been capable of doing a lot this year….. Could be another start of a streaking set of losses.
Whatever LaRussa tried failed in this game; and now that we know the Braves are in a somewhat tailspin leaves the door open for the Giants to push thru…..
One of the things LaRussa could have done – was to play his left fielder, Holliday . . . Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know his poor finger is hurting. Poor baby. Sheesh, it’s frickin’ October and supposedly they are fighting for a playoff spot. LaRussa is a conundrum and I don’t pretend to understand his moves (especially with regard to platooning and pitching). In my mind, he over manages. However, he is there and I am in my lazy boy lounger.
Regardless, as you pointed out Dennis . . . it’s all good for the Giants.
I don’t know about anyone else; but I’m becoming a Chris Stewart fan…. with kudos for him signing up next year as the backup to Buster…. Hey, he’s throwing out around 50% and the hitting though sporadic seems to be improving….. getting bunt hits??!… what’s with that!
It’s possible we all like Stewart so much because we’re comparing him to the odious Whiteside. I would like the Giants to find an actual honest to God legit back up catcher. We saw what happened this year when Buster went down….
Your probably right. But I would hope he gets a shot next year. I like the way he works with the pitchers and has gotten some respect from runners….
I’d guess he might start the year, but Sanchez will be the guy by EOY..IMO
If that’s true then Hector needs a nickname. If they keep Drrty and Fruckie comes back…some of these conversation will get confusing
Intuition, but dollars to donuts that Dirty is adios via trade.
I’ve lived in the NY area all these years and never knew about Finnerty’s in NYC (80 miles from me)… The sanctuary for East Coast Giants….. I can only imagine the celebration there during the ’10 WS.
Next to meeting all those Giants fans at Cooperstown for the trophy this past May, nothing would give me a greater baseball thrill then to hit that pub this Sunday afternoon to see the D-Backs get snake bitten by the Giants. In the meantime, there’s a few wins and other planet alignments required to make that meaningful trip.
Hmmm. Maybe we should meet there, w/ Loo.
I’m going to keep that open… not going to get tooooo excited … yet…..but looking forward to enjoying Giants fever!
I’m still up and hopeful about SF being in the post-season because I’ve been looking forward to a Flap-together at some pub somewhere to watch a Giants playoff game when I’m back visiting the Bay Area next month…..
They’re VERY much alive, and as I speculated, Bochy is leaning toward going with Cain tomorrow instead of Surkamp. As per Henry, both flew ahead to AZ…you can’t lose with with your 5 when Cain is on his normal rest and ready..
Think they’ll know how to check into a hotel on their own?
GONE!!!!!
Woo Hoo (apology to Ferret) . . . waaaaaaaaaaaaay to go Beltran!
Swing that bat, Carlos!
Huff looked out of breath in the on deck circle…
Was he smoking again?
Relax. We will win tonight. As Magnus knows, I live for SF Giants hat stories. Minutes ago: @ Wegmans, young black guy in one of those motorized carts. Injured foot. He is sporting a spanking new Giants hat w/ orange bill. “You a Giants fan?” Smiles. “My uncle is,” he replies. “He sent this to me.” “Where’s your uncle live, San Francisco?” “Atlanta.” “Atlanta?!” “Yeah.” “How old is your uncle?” “55.” “Must be Willie Mays, like me.” “You been to San Francisco?” I ask him. “No.” “I went to Game 1 of the Series.” “I like your black and orange] glasses,” he says. I give him my card, tell his uncle to look me and Flap Nation up. “I’d like to go to a game at Yankee Stadium,” the dude says. “World Champions,” I say, pointing to his cap.
This also means we’ll take the Wild Card from ATL and STL.
Bank it.
Pawlie, for the last couple of years in New Orleans at Jazz Fest I wore my SF cap and would chat up others with the occasional knowing dude nod. This year I wore my Flying Squirrels cap and almost attacked Giants fans with the shout “Your World Champion San Francisco Giants”. The wife gave me the knowing wife nod. But she also did the, my husband is outta his mind nod, to whoever it was wearing the Giants hat. It was fun, each person had a story and it was a “basking” time for all.
As a writer, I hope you put together all the stories you heard.
Good story. And good suggestion. Too bad Magnus has not recorded all my manic calls to him.
He didn’t like the way he left the box? He hit the ball a million miles and it’s his 5th hr of the year. Anyone would have semi paused to watch that monster blast
With that Rivera HR and LA up 2-1, 2 weeks ago I would have written off the game as lost… but with this changed offensive approach, my fears are some squashed…
MagnusFlavoris [MF]; My boy Brad Peacock — your Stanford guy — beat the Phils tonight. He’s 2-0. Toldya.
Any relation to Elvis?
I think it was his 5th with LA, 11th overall.
Peacock?
Yes, Elvis Peacock.
Willie was hitting for George Foster…
Philly seems to have totally given up on the regular season. Doesn’t bode well for that final Atlanta series….
On the other hand, if you’re the Phils, don’t you want to rev it up at some point, so you don’t go into the playoffs on such a flat note?
absolutely. Every time I check their box scores they’re losing or have lost….
All these Dodger hits don’t bode well either…
4th inning.. Madison needs some confidence his offense is behind him… he doesn’t have his best stuff and their hitting the crap out of the ball..Time for 3/4/5 to answer back… Huff has to respond this time….
I am now the first person to answer a trivia question 15 minutes before it was asked…
now see, that is the definition of G-O-L-D….baby.
Damn.
Never thought I’d say this but…… Pill should have started instead of Huff who has left men on base and isn’t getting any wood on the ball.
Who should have started for Bumgaener as long as we’re dreaming?
Focus your wrath away from new posters. He made a good point here. Go back to B if you’re feeling like being a dick
And don’t you Bummie guys get all freaked out- it’s a hindsight deal. If you knew he was going to give up 4 in 5 innings, who would you pitch? Pickings are slim.
It was no wrath – legit question= what would we do if we knew what was going to happen. We’d start Pill, Oh Goody”, etfuckingcetera..
Everything with you is wrath. And now you’re targeting a new blogger. As I said, go fucking back to room B. It’s where you said you would stay, right?
Totally fair question. And I changed my mind- don’t start, it was not a “wrathul” post. Now settle down.
I remember elvis peacock, he wore #4 and was a wishbone or whatever version okies called it, running QB. Lot of cool guys wear #4…I always dug Byron Scott, out of inglewood and u of az.
Who was the okla guy from around that time that became a congressman, black running back or QB who was a republican (like a liberal demo could get elected there) in the House?
J.C. Watts.
J.C. Watts…
You only beat me because I took a moment to open a pack of Ritz Crackers. (grin)
I love Ritz crackers, with or without some kind of topping. Have you tried any of the new varieties?
I had some that had peanut butter between them a while back. I generally just like the good ol’ fashioned regular plain Ritz.
J. C. Watts
willieD, I’d bet anything that you were a fan of I.M. Hipp…
naw… I always hated huskers….all those corn fed roid boy linemen beating up on the likes of the cyclones.
Isaiah Moses is a pretty cool name tho.
I do also remember warren mcvea that you mentioned few days ago. Didn’t he play for Houston cougars when they scored 100? Unbelievable for college football game, and not vs. 1-AA presbyterian state either.
Against SMU after they just came back from the “death penalty” though? Am I remembering that right?
Yes, the BP had a workout last night. But i’m still baffled as to why Bochy started the fifth with Edlefsen. He clearly hasn’t got it together yet as a M.L. reliever. A 4-1 lead is not insurmountable. A 6-1 bulge ~ or whatever it may be by now ~ is practically the knell of doom. When Edlefsen walked the bags full it might have been a good idea to put in a veteran reliever rather than Waldis at that point. Generally, Bochy has made his reputation as a bullpen master. Wondering if he’s just packed it in for the season with those choices ~ seeing what he may have in reserve for next season.
I’ve explained it before. Several times, Stix. BTW, I hope to get your PC back to you next week.
I think all of us would like to redo the lineup after we knew how the real one fared. Same with the pitcher. Hell, the pony in the 6th…
This cannot stand. The existential karma of Kokonuts kosmic komeuppance will not allow it. We must win. Begin chipping away. Now. Pronto. Prego. “Must win” is the litany rosary incantation of Baskingville Nation.
Or maybe Baskerville Holmes.
willieD: I loved that Memphis State team with Lee and Bedford. Lotsa folks, me included, think they dumped that FF game to Villanova…
Come on, girls. If the Mets can do it, so can we.
Hey Flappers…
On my way out so, since I haven’t been here in some time…
Good luck the rest of this game and the rest of the season-seriously.
Be good to each other and fuck those twits at the splash…
Later guys
Thanks for checking in, Sandy. Here’s hoping the dodgers finish ahead of the giants ONE of these upcoming years! 🙂
Happy New Year.
earlier than that i think zumie…They beat somebody 77-0, and then next week or so won 100-6. One of those was vs. Cincy bearcats…I thought that was the 100 game.
Man, just not SF night..here we are talking college football.
We could be talking about that thrilling Republican Presidential candidate debate. Yes, there was yet another one tonight.
It’s extremely comforting to know that one of them will be their candidate.
The Seven Dwarfs might well deadlock each other and party insiders would trot out General BetrayUs, known to some ex-military types as the most successful asskisser in the U.$. Army.
Nice prediction by Krukow there.
One arm? No problem. Panda.
One of those things that just seems to happen is afte a lead off HR, you score again same inning.
Fuck, huff hammered that one too.
Mario Mendoza for Crawford.
Not exactly intimidating walk up music there
If, for some unexpected reason, Drrrty stays with the team, imagine this D.P.: Hard-hit ground ball to Sanchez who flings it to Sanchez who fires it to Sanchez to complete the twin-killing.
Yeah, I mentioned that scenario earlier
Bochy’s looking for a leeeeetle bit of speed here
Betcha Andres rips one foul down the RF line…
One of the players needs to use this for their walk-up music:
Revenge time…
See those socks Zito is wearing? I was wearing a pair of socks that looked like those today.
Well, a loss here would make it real tough. If we win out, we can tie Atlanta if they go 2-4 and St. Louis 3-3. AZ clinches a tie if we lose, so they have to lose 6… totally doable 😉
Zito couldn’t get through a clean inning.
