A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Celebrating A Player’s Injury

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 8, 2011

I think anyone who knows me knows that I wouldn’t ever celebrate a person being injured. One exception: I  have no problem with a football player going after a known injured area of an opposing football player. It’s a violent game, if you take the field willingly you are fair game. And exploiting weaknesses is what football is all about. I’m still pissed that the Niners didn’t go after Romo when they knew he was hurt……

But I don’t celebrate other people being hurt or injured. I don’t have a bad feeling in the world about Ryan Howard, I hope he’s ok. And I do have genuine sympathy for him and for how his last 2 seasons have ended….

Hell, I’ve been hurt several times playing sports. I’ve torn ligaments in both wrists diving for balls on separate plays 2 years apart. Competing is something to honor and if you get hurt doing so you get honored that much more.

I just don’t like the Philly fan base and I never will. They’re all a bunch of whiny, hubris-inebriated,  out of touch with reality, blaming booing fucks. And I will not be changing this opinion any time soon…..

Except for Tom Petty. I fucking love Tom Petty and he gets a pass with me for as long as we are both alive for being a Philly fan. No Flappers, it’s not THAT  Tom Petty. But the one I’m talking about reads the blog regularly, lurking but never posting. I hope you’re good my man, you need to check in soon. 🙂

Here’s a pic of one of the great men I have been lucky enough to know in my lifetime. This dude is a compilation of brilliance, genius, glory and destiny. He is, quite simply, THE MAN!

Napoli HAS to catch that ball. Too bad use can’t use a 2nd DH.

napoli is an offensive catcher and his defensive weak spot is blocking balls.

I saw Brian Wilson on a Taco Bell commercial today. He’s become one of the most nationally recognized baseball players in the nation, along with Timmy. Seriously, could people identify Cliff Lee and Roy Halliday in a crowd of people?

yeppers, never like to see a player hurt, never watch nascar for the crashes.
it is ODD that Ryan was batting at the end of the last two Philly playoffs.
last year it was embarrassing PR when that photo became viral
this year an injury with him on the ground and St Louis team celebrating.
    weird

I’m pretty sure I heard the cheese whiz fans booing Howard when he went down and I read some saying they hoped the injury was bad enough to keep him out of the 2012 season. These are his hometown fans. Ask Mitch Williams about the death threats he received during and after the 93 World Series, I don’t recall Cubs fans calling him up to say his house was going to be blown up after the 89 play offs.
This from a Phillies blog (I Don’t Give A Schmidt) “Apparently Buster Posey hurt his widdle leggy while blocking the plate in the 12th inning of last night’s Giants/Marlins game. This prompted his agent, Jeff Berry, to cry, throw a tantrum, hold his breath until he passed out or mommy bought him a new toy (he got the toy), and complain to MLB that there needs to be an immediate rule change regarding collisions on the basepaths.”
    Fuck Philly fans everywhere.

A lot of the Philly fans are not good fans. A bunch of the Philly fans booed their team at the end of that last game. That’s just unthinkable for a good fan. The Reds fans booed Joe Morgan at the end of his career, and it made him bitter about the Reds fans at the end. It’s despicable to boo someone who helped give the fans a championship. I hope the fans don’t boo Huff next season if he struggles badly. It’s different with Zito. He never did much for the Giants from the get-go. But I, personally, wouldn’t boo Zito. I don’t like the concept of booing the hometeam. And I never booed Kent when he played against the Giants after leaving the team. Kent did a lot of good things for the Giants. I didn’t get the booing of him that some did. Just my opinion.

  11. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on October 9, 2011 at 9:55 am

Our fans are no better or worse than any others, this is a blown up issue…
If there are 40,000 fans maybe a few hundred booed Howard. Booing Santa? That’s phucking phunny is all..There are scumbags everywhere, Bryan Stow has been attacked for “deserving it”, a couple regulars at Chuck’s old blog made death threats against Alex Smith, MANY “fans”celebrated when Rowand was beaned…and it does have to be added that the Philly fans were booing as the team left the field, it’s not possible to say what might have been directed at Howeard for making out, let alone who might have been “celebrating” his injury..if we’re going to quote comments on a blog, here’s one that undoubtedly represents the true Philly fan, not the wackos that every team has;..
“some of our fans are just heartless assholes and it makes me so mad. it’s people like that that gives us a bad reputation as fans. i’m sorry ryan got hurt, and i really hope he is healthy by next season. i will always be a fan and love this team, win or lose. and i can’t wait for next season to be there and cheer them on.”

For the Phillie fans, it’s like their identity. The HAVE to boo to keep the legacy going. They probably think it’s funny……..

Agree with Twin about “. . . scumbags everywhere.”

The entire world is more “look at me” and NOT politically correct than we were 10 years ago (and definitely compared to the 1950s). Today, we even cheer executions and someone dying because they don’t have a health care plan; and, boo a soldier because he is gay (ignoring the fact that he is fighting for OUR FREEDOM overseas), e.g., see recent Republican debates.

Not certain why this is . . . Perhaps, it’s because we now have access to instant media, such as YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Blogs, etc., coupled with our own media devices such as smart phones, webcams, etc., to instantly project our opinions everywhere and on everyone.

Everyone wants to have their 15 minutes of fame . . . or more.

Again, sorry I made a big deal out of it, Flavor.

My take is similar to those of most here. There are asshats in every fan base, in every political party, in every race, everywhere. I can’t do anything about that. But what I can do, and what I hope that my friends and compatriots will do for me, is give the heads up when a good dude makes a mistake.

The thing that pissed me off the most about the AZ Snakepit thing is how NONE of the Dbag posters over there were willing to tell McClennan (the owner and moderator) that he fucked up. They circled the wagons around him and let the stinking taint of his shitstain comment about Posey’s injury get smeared all over them. Of course he wasn’t going to listen to me, a Giants fan. But if his fellow Dback fans had held him accountable, he might have learned that you don’t say subhuman shit like that.

Another thing that occurs to me is that there IS a point at which it becomes OK to taunt a injury. For instance, back when I worked in physical rehab, for some patients there came a point where calling them out would get them to work through pain. As twin has pointed out being an ornery fuck can be an advantage when dealing with illness or injury, and taunting somebody to rouse their spirit works sometimes.

So what is the statute of limitations on the “don’t kick a man while he’s down” rule?

    • zumie's avatar zumie said, on October 9, 2011 at 1:24 pm

We saw a little bit of that with Freddie Sanchez early last year. Even Bochy and the Giants organization was getting frustrated with his effort in rehab, it seems. Freddie ended up making a big contribution, but who knows how much the Giants lit a bit of fire under him, with their criticism. On the other hand, a team has to be careful not to rush someone back too soon. There’s an uncertain fine line in there somewhere. Everyone heals at different rates. People have different pain tolerances, too. The age of the athlete is part of the equation, too. A big factor in Posey’s favor is that he’s so young. Younger people generally heal faster.

    • I_B_ed_c's avatar I_B_ed_c said, on October 9, 2011 at 2:33 pm

When you don’t know what the extent of an injury is. Or when a team leader just ended your playoff hopes and you are an angry fan you don’t scream “you fuck, I’m glad you’re injured”
And I can attest to zumie’s claim: or, at least, to older people generally heal slower.

The last thing that needs to be accomplished in the baseball playoffs is for LaRussa to be ousted in this round. Once St. Louis is eliminated, then all things considered, the playoffs will have gone the best they could have gone, IMO.
