A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

The (Mis?)Handling of Brandon Belt

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 14, 2012

The bloggers are up in arms over this one. Bochy’s said he was “giving him a day” but that day turned into 3 or 4 and now it appears that Belt is no longer the starting first baseman. He’s got 1 hit this season in 11 at bats to go along with 5 strike outs. He’s been terrible at the plate. Krukow had a long winded excuse for him the other day that had something to do with his front shoulder. I wasn’t really listening. With Krukow, everything comes down to mechanics.

It’s also quite possible that Belt isn’t mentally ready to hit at this level. He seems to have spring training and the minors down pat. But he gets to the big leagues and it’s like the *off* switch gets hit. And frankly, I don’t blame Bochy at all for how he’s handling him. The bottom line is that Huff is producing. He’s taking walks, he’s getting hits and he’s better placed at first base than he is in the outfield.

The next natural question is, what about Pagan? Why isn’t he on the bench? It’s  a decent question, Pagan has been equally horrific, but he’s got 3 things that Belt doesn’t have: 1) an MLB track record 2) speed. 3) a mood you don’t want to disrupt.

Pagan boldly claimed in spring training that he would steal 50 bases this year. 50? Well, he’s on pace to steal *0* for the season. As it stands, he’s gonna come in a skosh shy of that brash  prediction. But speed is a hypnotic temptress, Bochy is doing the right thing in waiting on Pagan. He’s stolen 69 bases the last 2 seasons. It would be tough to send that to the bench a week into the season. And while Pagan seems to be a good teammate right now his *track record* is that his mood turns sour quickly and the Giants probably don’t want to deal with that so early in the season……

You might say, well why is Nate getting starts? I thought he was the 4th outfielder? Nate seems to be able to hit in Coors Field and I’m hoping his 2-bomb game doesn’t trick Bochy into giving him more starts in RF. Nate is clearly best coming off the bench.

What about The White Shark? Should he be getting more starts? Eh, maybe. He’d probably get some for the same reason that Bochy is leaving Pagan out there. His speed. But I don’t see Blanco getting much more than a spot start here and there (unless Bochy moves Pagan down the LU). He’s just happy to be here, he’s fine coming off the bench. Another reason why I think Pagan will continue to hold on to a starting outfield spot.

But the plan for Pagan will probably be to move him down in the order at some point in the near future (probably to 6th). If that happens THEN I could see Bochy sliding The White Shark into the LU to give us a leadoff hitter.

Melky probably isn’t going to see any time at leadoff.  He’s our 2nd best hitter right now, just leave him where he is…….

When considering all of the immediate short term possibilities I just don’t see where Belt fits into the line up on an everyday basis. I like Belt, I’m happy he made the team. But you have to produce at this level to stay at this level. Eleven at bats is certainly not enough time to give him but there are circumstances (mostly related to Pagan) that are pushing Bochy to make the recent decisions he’s made.

Maybe the plan WAS to just give Belt a day off. It turned into *3 or 4*. And now he’s back to the bench and probably headed to Fresno when Glass comes off the DL…….

5.42 . . . That is the only number of interest to me. In 7 games, they are producing that many runs per game and that’s 4th in the league. Consequently, I like what Bochy is doing with Pagan and Belt. Regarding Pagan, he is a key piece long term and I think he will eventually produce (sheesh, I even picked him up in our Flap league this morning after Giant Head dumped him onto the waiver wire). As you pointed out Flav, the guy has an “MLB track record” and you don’t disregard that after 27 at bats.

Regarding Belt, he doesn’t have a track record and Bochy is obviously looking for good match ups for Belt. No problem with that, especially in lieu of Huff hitting and the already crowded situation at first and the outfield. Who knows? Next week, Belt could be playing regularly at first. The season is still young.

I like today’s matchup with Zito and Morton. The Bucs are 30th in runs, batting average, on base percentage, and slugging percentage. Zito has an opportunity to continue build on his excellent first start. Go Giants!

Another thing I like about Pagan – one strikeout in his 27 ABs.

pagan isn’t going to steal anything if he can’t get on base. blanco has a track record of higher OB, tho pagan has had a better reg season such as 2010. But piling up oh-fers at the top isn’t helping the team. Pagan has also made an error in CF–didn’t see it so I dunno what happened.
Belt…i’m not getting into that one, other than to note that others are off to better starts–huff, melk, nate, even pill cracked an HR off the bench. Bochy isn’t going to play all of them at the same time, and I can understand him getting tired of answering ? about who isn’t playing and why… esp last few days since team is winning.
Just finished PK’s book, and I ‘m amazed at the blogosphere/twitter action of mlb world. who knew flav had so many esteemed colleagues running blogs, and that fans have “2,000 twitter followers” all over the world?

That’s the one thing about Pagan–he may or may not produce and/or get those stolen bases but he is a prince of fielding errors and that’s not a good track record at all.

But at the end of the day, they are not doing Belt any favors. If they kept him on the team coming out of spring training, they need to play him nearly every day. Otherwise, it is not worth wasting him sitting on the bench, especially with posey and pill being able to play first and starting there against lefties.

The solution while Pagan struggles is to go with Blanco at leadoff, Pagan in right and Huff at first against righties. Pagan should hit 6th till he finds his stroke. If Blanco fails, why should he occupy a roster spot. But for now, belt should be at Fresno hitting every day…

  4. Nipper's avatar Nipper said, on April 14, 2012 at 7:47 am

Belt can be sent down and it will not be the end of the world. He can also play part-time until he finds himself. They’re always having meetings and management will figure this out.

  5. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 14, 2012 at 8:33 am

Huff doesn’t now and never did have anything to do with Belt playing. How can anybody even ask if 11 at bats is enough, that’s stupid. The LU should be exactly what was opening day except Burriss for Theriot. Pagan also needs more time, but he’s hardly the future, as someone suggested. Nate and Blanco are and should be the 4 and 5 OFers , if after another couple weeks Pagan still isn’t hitting, Bochy can the hot hand/platoon game with those three. Belt needs a full month, he has nothing to show in Fresno.

  6. NoTalent's avatar NoTalent said, on April 14, 2012 at 8:33 am

I’m fine with whatever Bochy/Sabean decide on Belt. The Gs made a big deal in ST over Belt’s hitting flaws, and the Dbacks exploited those exact flaws. So it’s not so much the sample size as it is the quality within that sample.

Belt is 24 soon and is still the most likely starter for 2013. I wouldn’t mind if he sat on the bench: he’s still valuable as a pinch-hitter since he can draw a walk and is a legit home run threat. He’s also an asset defensively and can serve as Huff’s late-inning caddy. Since he has clobbered every level, perhaps watching the game, studying video and working on his swing in the big leagues isn’t the worst thing in his warm-up year as a starter.

If he goes to Fresno, I doubt he will learn much, but he may get the reps/confidence he needs. It will also have the added benefit of delaying his free agency clock.

Long term, I thin the Belt scenario is huge. If he pans out the way his fans think he will (i.e. .270+ with 25+HRs) that gives the Giants three 800+ OPS hitters (with Panda + Posey) for the next few years at dirt-cheap prices. That’s enough of a lineup to contend for the West every year, populating the rest of the lineup with cheap youngsters (Panik, Brown, Crawford, Nate) and low-cost vets (like Melky).

  7. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 14, 2012 at 8:54 am

Maybe what pissed them off is that he said if they want him to learn to hit major league pitchers, he should do it against major league pitchers. Last year was enough- now’s the time to commit to him or see if they can get a pitcher for him. Theyre lousy with first basemen/catcher prospects.

Belt’s time is now. It is stupid not to play him, there really isn’t an argument there based on age and what Belt has *already* shown at the major league level. I pointed out earlier that 4 more singles last year would have had his BA over 250.

Belt was not exploited by the DBs with strikes up and in. What I saw was a player who was following a recipe to swing early and often, who did not see any pitches like the one Pill hit out, who fouled off hittable pitches on the outer half of the plate, and who went out of the strike zone up more than a couple of times.

The one thing I didn’t like to hear coming out of Belt’s mouth, was when he said “I could use a mental day off im fried mentality” This after 3 games into the season, are you kiddin me?
Probably made it easy on Boch to bench him after that.
But I stlll want Belt in the LU playing 1B he just needs to “Suck it Up” or do what Whitey use to do “Suck Boch Pole” for playing time.

  10. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on April 14, 2012 at 9:52 am

Giants are phucking with Belt yet again. Let him play. They played Ishi for near half a season and something like 200 ABs a coupla years ago before pulling the plug on him as an everyday player. They tell Belt one thing, then sit him for 3 or 4 games. Huff hit a dinger yesterday, so he’ll probably start now for a week. Not to mention they continually go off on him for some reason in the media, like he’s got herpes or something. Like Pagan doesn’t have a “hole” in his swing? Sheezus. No wonder Belt’s messed up. If this kid makes it with the Giants, it will be a minor miracle now, and mostly not his fault…

  11. Alleykat's avatar Alleykat said, on April 14, 2012 at 10:23 am

Agree Snarkk…Belt’s getting “Cornholed” without the corn on the cob. He’s their Best 1B who easily would save them games there, projects to hit 20-25 bombs 80 to 95 RBI’s in 500+ PA, yet be rots on the bench like a Fowl Aaron Rowand Carcass.
Any other MLB club has Belt playing everyday, but not Boch for some reason.

This hurts, but I now agree with what Snarrk has posted about them being too public with the critique of his swing. I don’t doubt that they think he’s a major prospect so they’re doing it “for his own good”, but no fucking wonder his confidence is low. He’s late on an up and in fastball and he’s looking toward the dugout. And here’s a bulletin: ALL tall left handsed hitters have that hole. He gets over it through repetition- against MLB pitchers. This kid is not Bowker- he’s a major talent like Buster, they’re treated differently- you give him his position and let him be.

The opening day aligment with Huff in left and Belt at first is clearly the one wth the most offensive upside, there’s no reasonable argument that says otherwise. Nate has had over 1100 at bats to prove he’s not a MLB regular, I think we can put that discussion to bed. Pagan vs. Blanco? Probably no diff but Pagan, despite some frigging problems with HIS swing, needs more time before they bail on him.

  34. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 14, 2012 at 4:41 pm

Casilla: Easily the best closer stuff, but will make a Wilson save seem a leisurely stroll in the park
Romo: By the numbers, he’s the guy. By temperment, maybe not.
Lopez: Loogy, RHers .292 career against him
    Affeldt: too darn inconsistent
    Mota:best temperment, but uh-uh
    Ottero: Nope
Hembree: I doubt they’d tthrow him right in

Closer by committee is always the choice until someone steps up. My pick is Romo with Hembree setting him up to start with.

My first thought is let’s hope the rest of the bullpen performs as well as they did last year. I really don’t care if they designate one of them the closer or not. The BP pitched about 540 innings last year, of which 55 were Wilson’s.

Per Bochy, they will do the “Committee” thingy, until someone asserts himself. Regardless, there is a good possibility that Humbree will be called up to fill the relief spot IMO.

This is a frustrating development. I’d like to know the details of that convo with Dr Andrews last Summer. Did he sign off on no surgery or did Wilson make the call to go the “rest” route? Then he comes back in September for a few appearances? I guess what i want to know is this: when did this damage to the elbow occur? spring training? His last game? If the MRI done last August showed this damage he would have done the surgery then, you would think.

  49. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on April 14, 2012 at 5:39 pm

I expect managers and players to lie about lots of things—keeps them from having to answer questions which they obviously don’t like to do. When I say “hidden injury” I’m talking about an injury being the main reason for decreased performance or failure. Not that that there was some secret conspiracy theory going on. Even though that’s what that “ankle” injury was.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 14, 2012 at 5:43 pm

He never pitched since that game. As I said, non-issue on the diagnosis coming today..

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on April 14, 2012 at 5:57 pm

you seem to think I’m saying that the Giants were *hiding* this. I suspect that if there was damage done in the game Wilson might not have said anything at the time—everybody knows he’s the ultimate gamer. That’s why I’m interested to know when this occurred.
He was used sparingly in the Spring but I doubt anyone suspected what the MRI results showed today. But who knows?
Again, I’m not saying the Giants or even Wilson was *hiding* anything. Just that a *hidden* injury, as in *undiagnosed*, could be responsible for Thursday’s shaky performance. He was throwing most of his fastballs at 90. That’s not the Bee Weezy we all know and love……

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 14, 2012 at 6:10 pm

He could very possibly have tweaked his ankle as well. But he pitched Thursday, reported the elbow problem Friday, and tests were begun almost immediately, from what I’m reading. All seems SOP to me.
