Winning Smart, Not Hard………

If you subtract the game they got *Jaime’d*, the Giants have taken 28 walks over their last 3 games. That is outstanding. For years I’ve wanted this team to take walks and for years they go up to the plate hacking at everything they see. I don’t think it’s as much of a philosophical change as much as adding new players who are deciding to take a smart approach to hitting (or walking).

When you have a powerless team that doesn’t really hit for much of a batting average either it’s imperative that you take walks and we’ve seen what happens when we do that. Besides an increased opportunity to score runs it serves another important purpose: it increases the starting pitchers pitch total and gets you into their bullpen earlier in the game. It also will put a pitcher in the stretch and that’s important to do if you’ve got an opposing pitcher who has gotten into too comfortable of a rhythm on the mound.

In short, walks are all good. When I see the Giants taking 8, 9, 10 walks in a game that darn near qualifies as decent porn in my book. And, on that note, on to another topic………

Brad Penny. I might have missed why we signed him and why Bochy says he’s going to be with the team soon. Is he going to take over long relief duty? Because with Mota gone and Edelfsen hopefully gone soon I don’t see where he fits into the scheme of things right now.

Sunny skies are going to be all they see this weekend in New York, Cleveland and Detroit, with temperatures reaching the low 80s. Well, it turns out I won’t be going to the game today. I thought I had bought tickets to this one, but it turns out I didn’t. OK- not my brightest moment. (grin) I had bought a packet of tickets, and thought that was one of the games, but on further review…..doh!
Next up- Sat., June 2nd, against the Cubs.

Yes, walks are good for so many reasons.

Penny can turn out to be a key move for an already solid pitching staff.

Not only taking walks but making them pay. Pagan taking second with a SB, Blanco scoring from first on the drive to the gap and the Zit man helping his cause with the bases juiced RBI BB. The other thing that was nice to see was the situational hitting. Except for Edelfsen serving it up, this was not a bad little game at all. Oh yeah, props to Boch on an inspired LU.

Of course it’s not a change in policy, as far as ex-hackers turning into patient hitters. As I noted last night, they now have 5 hitters with good OBPs, guys that will take a walk- that wasn’t taught anymore than they teach hitters to hack away. Pagan was interviewed after the game, he said he’s started taking more pitches now. He’s the only one who altered his approach, but it’s not new- for some bizarre reason known only to Angel, he chose to swing early and often when he was lkeading off. He’s started to become more patient since he was moved to the middle of the LU. Btw, wer are now 6th in NL BA, 7th in OBP, still 10th in runs- but the offense is definitely improving, as expected. Posey , Melky, Blanco, Belt, and Pagan are all playing regularly and 3 are new, Belt new as to playing regularly. If there’s a policy change it’s that they acquired some more “disciplined” hitters, nobody was turned into one.

The patience shown by the hitters lately has been a most pleasant surprise, especially after the hacktastic last few years of watching the team. Here’s hoping that FOX’s broadcast tonight enables us MLB package users to get the game today. Do any of the other old times remember when The Sporting News was like 85 percent about baseball, this was back in the 60’s. I remember buying it for a quarter and reading it from front to back ever week.

If the Giants finish 7th in OBP, the division should be ours. Still, they are 7th in runs allowed because of the crappy D, and as much as I’m amazed and overjoyed to see all of those runners on base, OPS is an absolute index. There’s little chance this group of players goes much higher than 7th in OBP, so they need to boost the SP. I think that will happen — Posey, Pagan, Melky and Belt are collectively due for a few HRs, and certainly the return of Pablo will help in the longer run.

  They’re 9th in OPS. I think what I was *trying* to point out was not they were the ’27 Yankees, but that the offense’s offensiveness has been greatly exaggerated. And as James points out, it will get better still. The defense has also improved- when Tim gets straightened out and they come up with acceptable long relief, they’ll be just fine. Penny,though? I don’t know about that. Hacker would be OK and he’d be available for spot starts.

Flav – I agree re: the walks. Actually the team’s BA is not awful (.258) which is 6th in the NL. Runs? Another story…10th in the NL.

Good game last night. Zito should have been given more rope, and from what I read, Bochy agrees.

Belt had a nice game, and how about Pa(not)GONE in the clean-up with 3 walks.

Horse racing fans (Denny and Loo). I think Bodemeister is pretty beatable today with I’ll have Another and Creative Cause. Everyone is down on I-H-A because he just rolled into that insane pace set by Bode and ate him up in the end but his T-graph figs are the shit and I think he wins today. I also have teeth of the Dog and Went the Day Well in my triples but I only have I-H-A and CC in my pick 4’s (which I just started with a 9-1 shot I might add 🙂 )

40th game today. Not everything worked out yet, still questions related to the injured and if/when they come back as in Franchez and Panda. But, I think they’ve figured out Blanco should leadoff, and Pagan is clearly better off down the lineup. Those alone are real progress towards a collective offensive comfort zone. Nice game…

watching blanton throw BP to the Red Sox (4 bombs in 4 plus)…Rox were down 9-0 at home to the Mariners (!) after the kid Friedrich got lit up and lose 10-3….Kennedy of dbs down 5-0 to the royals….Giants fans really are spoiled by pitching quality and depth as Vogs continues to dominate.

So who’s gonna be the first Flapper to say Zito is *back*? Has he ever *been*? He’s had stretches of starts (like the beginning of the 2010 season) but he seems to be *hanging around* respectability this season. I ask you, do you believe? I tossed my "I believe" Zito shirt into the sea a long, long time ago….

  I thought it was the worst contract the Giants ever consummated before the ink was dry on the contract he signed. That being said, some people use “hate” to describe their feelings for Barry. For me, that’s going too far. My opinion only, but hate (for anything, anyone, anyplace) is extreme. In short, I try not to let negative feelings “rent” my brain.

Zito is getting closer to 95 innings which results in me winning an office pool. Only then will he be backnot respectable in my mind. My winnings will consist of steak, lobster and talking endless shit at my “colleagues” for their lack of faith.
