A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Texas Returns to SF

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 8, 2012

My memories of the 2010 World Series are crystal clear but my feelings about the Texas Rangers are staid and subdued. A lot of the same players are on their current team but when I think about them it’s hard for me to get too worked up. Maybe that’s because we kicked their ass.

On the other hand, our team is completely different than the one who won it all a couple of years ago.

Wilson and Franchez: hurt.

Burrell, Renteria, Uribe, Torres, Ross: Gone.

Huff: ghost.

As you all know, I went to Game 1 of that bad boy. Here is the box score. That night, Freddy was the best baseball player the world had ever known.

The energy in the yard that night was like nothing I’d ever been a part of. Pawlie, who I met before the game, watched it from the knothole section in right field. Here’s a video I took from our seats after what I think was a Huff hit. It may also have been after one of Freddy’s many doubles. I can’t quite remember:

Anyway, I’m out for the weekend, off to New York to take in The Belmont Stakes and what I hope is a historic triple crown victory. If you guys want to check out the pics I’ll be posting from Belmont Park you can follow me on twitter. I rarely use that account for anything but it appears that pics are easier to upload there than at facebook. Anyway, I’m @1flapdown77

catch you on the flip side…..

Weatherproof games: Rays at Marlins, Padres at Brewers, Athletics at Diamondbacks and Dodgers at Mariners.

Mostly sunny is the forecast for most of the cities hosting games on Friday, with Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Chicago, St. Louis and Cincinnati all seeing the warm weather. Clouds will linger over San Francisco with temperatures in the low-to-mid 60s. Thundershowers could interrupt matters in New York and Boston, but while cloud cover may be seen in Baltimore, the O’s should avoid the raindrops. Morning thunderstorms in Minnesota should not interfere with baseball, but similar weather closer to game time might impact the game in Colorado.

Zum, I’d take a second look at the B-P book—I think you would enjoy it. The math stuff, where they are explaining how they come up with a particular formula to measure something, is a bit much for me so I gloss over it. But the info gleaned from said is neat, and the discussions that follow quite interesting. There’s math behind L/R splits, why (or not) you would bunt in certain situations, how LUs work (or don’t), offense/defense in the make up of a team, playoffs and what the winners have, upswing and decline as players age….good reading. And as even they admit, the wonderful game of baseball has a lot of random luck involved as the only reasonable explanation for why a lot of stuff happens, just like life itself….including RISP.

Btw, one of the things that struck me was the difference in “park factor” in placing true value on hitter stats. There was a chapter in 2006 “Btw the Numbers” comparing the MVP season Larry Walker had at Coors vs. Piazza, with the conclusion being P got robbed because of where he played. Hmmmn…I should have added this into my argument for Matt Kemp over Ryan Braun for MVP last year.
I wonder what the p-f would be for ATT, esp compared to a yard like where Rangers play there home games. Not to mention the fact that SF also has 9 road games in SD and LA, two other parks that traditionally favor the pitcher.

Every time I see the Pads, I can’t get over Cameron Maybin, who wears #24. He’s hitting .218 and leading off, with an OB of .304 and slugging of .324, which are crawford numbers. He can run, field his position, and cracked a couple balls hard in the series, and he just looks like a player to me. Marlins took some heat for dumping him and giving up on the guy (like ross), but he just doesn’t seem to be able to cut it at mlb level.
The Pads usually f with us, but they are going to lose a ton of games this year, and I feel for bud black.

I saw the film “Fever Pitch” last night. A 2005 film, starring Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore, about an obsessed Red Sox fan and the strain that puts on his relationship with his girlfriend. It’s a romantic comedy with some occasional laughs. His over-the-top obsession with the Red Sox was amusing at times, annoying at other times.

    • paulinasia's avatar paulinasia said, on June 8, 2012 at 9:14 am

Agree, the film has both its good and its annoying moments, but I remember liking it, for a few reasons: Fallon is a life-long Yankees fan; they were making the film when Boston’s historic run happened and included it in the ending, not originally planned; and it was just good timing and a good-time film about a good-time baseball story, even for Red Sox haters who can get past the fact that it was the Red Sox….

    • sandog's avatar sandog said, on June 8, 2012 at 10:22 am

I rarely like movies, but I did like Fever Pitch. I identify a bit with the Fallon character as we both work at schools, are obsessed with an MLB team, like hanging out occasionally with the school sports teams–but don’t want the responsibility of being an actual coach, last guy to get a cell phone etc.
I like the part where he makes his friends dance for tickets to the best games. I also get a huge kick out of the “do you find my wife attractive?” line from the guy looking to buy his tickets. I own about 7 movies and this is one of them. Breaking the window throwing the football in the halls is something I would do as well.
Once when I teaching middle school I took the kids out on the field during some downtime with a bat and a kinda-spongy softball. I was ripping these Dave Kingman popups and saying I’d buy a coke for anyone who caught one (they didn’t have gloves). I accidentally hit a line drive. I was screaming for the kids to let it go, but one kid tried to catch it and badly broke his finger. Not good. I ended up in the superintendent’s office on that one.

Horse manure stinks. Whether it’s at Belmont Park, or the local stable. I wouldn’t drive across town to see ’em, let alone fly 3000 miles. Anyway, horse racing is mega boring. That’s why it’s a dying sport. A minute and a half of horses running, and some jocks holding back the nags that aren’t ‘sposed to win, separated by half hours of sheer boredom and plunking down cash you’ll never see again. That’s why it’s a dying sport. I’ve been to races twice, won some net cash both times, still was bored spitless. But, the beer helps. A horse bit me when I was a kid. I’ve been pissed at ’em ever since…

ChiP, I was handing the big bag of crap a handful of hay, and for my kindness he reached down and bit me on the stomach. Worthless POS. Now, the older Snarkette, like many girls of her age, is “getting into” horses and lessons for the past year and a half. Not only do they bite, but now they’re sucking money off me like a vacuum. Horses are nothing but bigger dogs with overbites, less loyalty, and way more expensive vet bills… 😉

Here’s an amusing stat I just read. Texas has lost its past 13 games in San Francisco. The last time the Rangers won, their first baseman, a man by the name of Will Clark, collected three hits-including a homer-in a 7-3 decision at Candlestick Park on June 26, 1998

In 2010, our RH hitters hit 99 HRs, this year they are on pace for half that. I think that goes a long way toward explaing the ridiculous discrepancy between the 4.9 RPG and 29 HR in 29 games on the road and 3.2 RPG and 6 HR in 29 home games. ATT is friendly to LF, but our only 2 power hitters from the right side are Buster and Panda when he faces a lefty. So while it should improve when Panda returns, there’s not a lot that’s going to change. On the upside, Melky/Pagan/Blanco is their most exciting OF in years, and is built for triples alley. Home or away, they obviously need some power from Belt, but all-in-all they simply have a team that doesn’t possess much in the way of hitters who can take advantage of a friendly LF…

Good thoughts on the film- Paul in Asia, and Dawg. Yeah, the film definitely resonates for hardcore baseball fans. One of the scenes that stuck out to me is when he gets the package of season tickets. I would be so like that guy in that situation. What would it be like to open a package like that?! The film captures that thrilling moment so well.
I get my little pack of a few games in the upperdeck and I’m pretty thrilled. I can’t imagine a whole package of season tickets, gloriously colorful, smelling brand new, all still attached together in big sheets. The Chronicle is covering the Stow trial situation very closely. Today’s article is interesting in that the prosecutors have “flipped” the get-away car driver, in exchange for immunity. She’s the sister of one of the guys, and the mother of the other guy’s child. Her testimony alone ought to seal the deal, but of course, we’ve seen stupid juries before. So, hopefully, the other witnesses seal the deal even more.
The trial is in the preliminary hearing phase.

I’ll never tire of that World Series memory. I’ve chronicled it here, fresh after the fact. It still has a brightness, an aura. A reality. I was just thinking yesterday, while walking the dog, it can never be repeated. It was one of those days (more accurately, strings of moments upon moments) when I knew I was happy and would remember it as being happy. Purely. How many times can we say that? Sure, if I was a Buddhist roshi or boddhisattva or whatever, I’d say, every moment. But I’m not that spiritually advanced. One of the quirky recollections is this: in some ways the best part of the trip was sitting across from Columbus Park, morning coolness and sun, with croissant and coffee, al fresco, Pellegrini (is that it?), alone, reading the Sporting Green of the Chron, in which Cliff Lee dissed our hitters, watching people with Giants caps, FEELING the electricity in the air, fielding a call from my wife back East. Is it that the anticipation is as good or better than the deed itself? I don’t know. But if I dropped dead right then, it would’ve been fine. There are few moments in life that pleasing. That was one of them. And we hadn’t even played Game 1 yet!

(Craig, so sorry about your trip. Guess it’s good I wasn’t en route to meet you.)

In a coincidence, the last two NetFlix films I watched featured Fenway Park prominently: “The Town” and “Fever Pitch.” The films couldn’t be more different in tone. “The Town” is a bleak crime film that has a big climactic scene as robbers attempt a heist of Fenway Park’s money offices after a game; and the thieves have been ‘ratted out,’ so the ballpark is surrounded by SWAT teams, and a colossal shoot-out ensues.

Thanks Mike for the Windows article. No equivocation from the ZDNet author – he hates it. I also wanted to see what CNET thought and they weren’t as harsh, but said there was much work to be done. These two paragraphs sum up what they have to say about Windows 8 Preview:

“While Windows 8 does get much right, there’s too much that hasn’t been finalized. The workflow is easy, once you learn it. Does that mean that Microsoft will be including a tutorial for people who haven’t read up on it? Ten seconds will do, but that may be 10 seconds too long for many people.

Windows 8’s reliance on unknown hardware remains a challenge because we don’t know what those devices will look like. Last, there’s no strong evidence indicating that a unified laptop-tablet experience is what people want next. Do people even want tablets that aren’t made by Apple? Is the tablet more like a larger smartphone, or a thinner laptop? Is there interest in one operating system that offers both casual touch and robust power modes? “

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 8, 2012 at 4:39 pm

I am not in the least bit interested in the portabilty and other features the tablets, smartphones, etc. provide. Some of that is for an obvious reason- I’m not going anywhere. But beyond that, I like systems I can build. If I had the money and the skill anymore, I’d build a new one everyday, give it away, and on and on. You know what the “post beep” is, right? The sound when the PC successfuly boots. After I hear that the first time, I’m ready to move on…

    Chi, Happy Birthday.
Ok, No NY trip but the weekend is cleared anyway. Baseball tonight and the races tomorrow. It’s probably a little bit better of a betting race now anyway.
And come on, you KNOW that plane is going down tonight, right? Pawlie, you can write a book (or at least an essay) on my amazing tale of *Sliding Doors* survival.
Also Pawlie, I just listened to a VM you left me last week, not sure how I missed it. I LOVE the idea.

I found myself LQTM when they were talkin’ up Zito’s 18-5 record against the Rangers. I’m assuming most of that happened when he was with the A’s. And when it was time to REALLY take advantage of that stat he was left off the WS roster.
