What a Perfect Night
I still can’t believe that game was even real. And hey, it’s not like I predicted he’d throw a perfect game. Now THAT would have been impressive. π π π
There were obviously 3 plays that stood out—the Melky catch, of course Blanco’s and then the final play. Cain’s total rock-like focus throughout the game, but especially before the final batter, should be studied by a team of sports psychologists. Of course, no one could ever teach or impart that ability, you either have it or you don’t. And few do. For the guy who everyone boo-hooed about never getting any run support in his career? How about a 10-spot for him, just to make sure he doesn’t have to worry about that side of the game……
Blanco’s catch obviously reminded me of the one Rowand made to save Dirrrrty’s no-no. The White Shark’s was better and I think he shook out about 2 pounds of dirt from his belt buckle after he got up. Arias fielded that ball deep and really had no momentum on his long throw. But after he carefully caught the ball he let the throw fly with his trademark slingshot motion and while it looked scary it ended up being perfect. What was last night like for those 2 guys? Found off the scrap heap, they end up preserving a perfect game. Some of the best books in the world are written about baseball but you can’t write stuff like this. It just happens…….
Today Prediction: Well, I don’t think I can top the last two so I’ll go with a higher percentage prediction: If you are a Giants fan you will savor this one. You will honor the beast of a man that Matt Cain is. And you’l love this game because it is the best. There is no other sport that produces moments like last night, especially in a game that’s a blow out…..
I went out on a dinner date last night and am pissed that I missed this game last night. However, with my luck the Kostaz internet site was probably down, so pfffffft either way . . . π¦
Regardless, I am sure happy for the Giants and Matty! π
Hope you got laid!
No such luck Chi . . . pffffft!
WTF…I am severly dissapointed in you, my man…musta been an off day. π
I think I’ll just quote Cainβs first reaction, to Bochy, (as reported by Baggs) βThis is stupid.β
What a night!
Weatherproof games: Mets at Rays, Padres at Mariners.
Minnesota could be in for what meteorologists are calling a “strong” thunderstorm, but other than that, the weather should not interfere much with Thursday’s baseball action. San Francisco will see temperatures in the high 60s with low clouds. It will be partly sunny with temperatures in the 88-94 range in St. Louis and Texas. Kansas City will be hot and humid, with the mercury approaching 90 degrees. Elsewhere, the forecast calls for nothing but sunny skies in Chicago (75 degrees), Baltimore (80), Cincinnati (84) and Colorado (90).
Screw your forthcoming baseball predictions… !!….. your Belt and Cain predictions force me to ask ‘ what stocks do you like?’… ‘ am I going to live to 90 years of age?’….
Seriously, last night brought a tear to my eye, just as it did when Sanchez pitched his no-no and hugged his dad……
My only regret is that I live on the East Coast and aren’t enjoying the fireworks in SF.
Ahh! Denniszu reminded me of the prediction you made Flav . . . Sentient call my man. However, I agree with denniszu – Will Bank of America and Intel continue to retrace lost ground and I am heading to Las Vegas on Tuesday, i.e., any betting suggestions?
it is unbelievable you talked about these things happening right before they did–belt actually did have 2 HRs, just a day apart. Lot of guys talk about “I called it”, but the evidence is right here on the site. Know any mayans?
Anything from Arias about his footwork before the throw? The guys on Espn used the word “stumbled”, and I’m not sue that’s accurate. Poor guy’s heart must have been in his throat, trying to get the last out.
Cain’s focus was impressive too, because in a laugher usually the SP is just trying to throw strikes and get the ball over the plate. Posey and Cain were moving the ball around, working corners, breaking balls down and in to LH, high hard fastballs to K guys, etc. All business, all the time. Great POTD, classic.
Excellent point willieD about “just trying to throw strikes and get the ball over the plate.” This game was a wipeout early and Cain could have relaxed, but didn’t. Makes his perfect game that much more . . . umm, perfect.
The lopsided score also worked to his advantage, Miller and Kuiper pointed out- not having to worry about losing the game takes a lot of pressure off.
I dunno about the rest of you guys, but I was listening to the game while running an errand after work, the giants are blasting the ball, so I didn’t get to see anything til it was 7-0…but it didn’t register to me cain had the n-h going because I was tripping off the score. Kuiper and Flems and Miller said a couple times, “Cain has not allowed a baserunner” but that was it. About 6th or so I went to the cbs site and you see all these zeroes up there for the stros…and yeah, I wasn’t gonna post anything here like a couple other guys said.
I have no idea what krukow was doing, but I think his esteemed colleagues ask him to keep doing it a little longer.
willie – watching the game, you could tell Matt was on by the 3rd inning. Perfect game on? No, but he was firing strikes. It did get awful quiet on the flap, but the run scoring sure helped me not think about what Matt was doing. After we scored some and Matt came back and would put the Stros down, I wanted to say something about another shut down inning, but I kept my fingers quiet.
What a great game.
A few notes: the ball by Schafer was ruled foul, with only a single angle provided, it was not possible to tell if it was the correct call. And that’s a good thing. Unlike the Santana game, the call won’t be able to be truly questioned. It might have been fair-but replay offered nothing definitive…
The Blanco catch was not remotely similar to Rowand’s. What strikes anyone watching it is that it was Pagan’s ball. In fact I had to check that Blanco wasn’t moved to center. Thank goodness it was Blanco who went for it. And under the circumstances, it’s one of the great catches in MLB regular season action. Rowand made a good catch, it appreared better than it was because he’s the Gamer..the wall buster. Bit Blanco’s was in a different league- the Other Worldly League..
Buster Olney said it was arguably the most dominant perfect game ever,. but felt compelled to add “Hey, it’s against the Houston Astros”..
NOW! Since the prediction will never be equalled, I think Flavor would be kind to tell the Flappers how it came about. As the prediction appears, it doesn’t appear to be something thought out and that’s doing Craig a disservice. It’s probably just modesty, a guy who slaves over xERA, wRC+ and the like, certainly had solid reasoning behind the call. As one of the great predictions of all time, it’s would be a cool thing if he’d share some of the study that went into it.
Another big move was made by Belt, thanks to Craig.Just two days ago he was at 83 wRC+, 14th among first basemen with minimum 120 plate appearances. Now he’s moved to 7th, meaning 8 regular NL first basemen are worse run producers. Getting rid of the other two heads, we’re finally not the worst first baseman group in MLB history..
Today, Zito tries to close the gap between he and Tim in the true ERA race. In fact, he’s hoping to move out of 12th place in that closely contested battle…
Wow. I thought about all you regular Flappers last night…but could not bring myself to hit the site while the game was going on. I keep telling myself that I am NOT superstitious…but fuck…I guess I am! I finally did make one post last night, but then had to go back and watch all the post-game, etc.
I think it was the 4th inning (watching the game with my son), when I said wow…no hits (and I had to rewind the box to see what inning it was. I thought “ah…it’s early.”
Then by the time the 6th and 7 rolled around (and especially after Blanco’s play) I was on edge.
That was (and still is) just fucking surreal. And I won’t lie…call me a softy, but that teared my eyes, and I am NOT afraid to share that.
Here are a couple of great You Tube videos. The first, Blanco’s catch.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTNYsdQWAgc&tsp=1
The second, the last couple minutes of the game.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&v=K4u5AyDJ5lk&NR=1
You will see later in the second one where Belt slips the ball into his hip pocket.
Great stuff!
Oh, and the Bums, after having two on, no out in the 9th, lost to the Angels last night!
Orange and Black Forever! GO GIANTS!!
Love when Belt puts the perfect ball in his pocket on the way to the celebration…
Chi, thanks for saving me the time of looking for these videos . . . Blanco’s catch was frickin’ gold baby!
FYI…for those who do not know, and want to listen…KNBR is re-playing the final three outs this morning around 8:50 (end of the morning show).
Perfect in every way!
Meanwhile, at the other end of the spectrum, the Rockies gave up 18 runs and 8 HRs to the A’s in two nights, which is also unbelievable, altho blade has been telling us how bad their PS is since day one. Pitching pitching pitching..plus defense.
Couple guys mentioned individual HRs at home for SF, after this outburst lately: who leads?
I posted it last night. Belt, Pablo, and Blanco share the lead with 2 each. And because of two days production, I’m getting called on the mortal lock that this team isn’t going to hit many at home. Funny shit.
This is a “Hangover”game today after last night’s Perfection.
You know it was gonna be a special day for Matt, when earlier in the day he was driving golf balls into McCovey Cove with Rory McElroy and Dustin Johnson.
forget baseball predictions, stocks, vegas, give my the Mega millions lottery numbers, and The Super lotto numbers. $39 million and $11 million respectfully
2010 WS all over again!!
Twin asked and this is where that prediction came from: on the heels on the Belt call I needed something “bigger”. I thought of the team we were playing and for some reason the mike Scott no no popped into my head. I thought that deserved some payback, the Astros aren’t exactly the Texas Rangers, and it was a “bigger” call– so I went with the no no. I still can’t believe it.
Cain on knbr right now
That is Romo,
No, it’s Cain. Romo was before him
Great stuff, Craig….just fricking awesome! Yep…listening to Cainer right now. Still all so surreal…
I’m glad you took that right- after I posted it I thought you might think I was questioning whether it was a serious call, not a just a “what the Hell”. Happy to know that my name helped you out- do I get royalties if you turn this into a paying gig? π
Well there isn’t a stat out there that pretends to predict a no hitter. I go back and forth on how eerie that prediction was. I mean, Belt’s was good but that was just 120 at bats or whatever and I just felt like he was due to pop one. But the no hitter call? There have been 3 in my lifetime. And remember, my first game was the Halicki no hitter that my dad took me too.
Those two videos go along with the Youtube one titled 27 outs, Timmys game
It may have been a bit jarring for some fans to hear Miller talking so openly about no-hitters and perfect games when he came back on TV in the 8th and 9th innings, not obeying the “rule” about jinxes. I knew he was going to do that. I had heard his call of the last couple of innings of the J. Sanchez game on the radio, and I knew Miller didn’t obey that rule. No doubt if the Astros had gotten a hit, some yahoos would have been calling the KNBR shows to complain about Miller causing the jinx. Once Miller started talking openly about the perfect game, then Kuiper said oh-what-the-heck, and began talking openly about it. Earlier in the game, he had slickly avoided the “jinx” by saying euphemisms like “The Astros have nary a hit” and “The Astros haven’t had a baserunner yet.” Fleming was the same in that regard. Ah, but Miller…..not gonna be superstitious about it. He ended the 8th inning by saying: “8 perfect innings for Cain.” And many Giants fans gulped. And then…..the 9th inning and the rule was completely out the window. Even the graphics people decided oh-what-the-heck and started putting graphics on about the history of Giants no-hitters.
Jon Miller- one of a kind!
I love Jon Miller, but like I said earlier…I thought about hitting the Flap, but just could not do it until it was all said and done. I had a couple of friends texting me, and I was like “shut the fuck up and leave me alone!” LMAO about it now…but in the moment…I could have seriously kicked some asses!
By the way, Romo said Wotus had just shifted the outfield prior to the Blanco catch so that brilliant shift of “everyone to their right” is what really did preserve the perfect game
Coaches do matter!
I know…Blanco was saying in the post-game how his teammates were like “WTF dude, why you playing there?!” All the little intricities that make up the wonderful (hands-down BEST) game of baseball.
And Matt ties Sandy Koulfax with 14 Ks!
Some site rated the best games- and Matt’s was tied with Koufax among no-hitters but Kerry Woods’ one hit 20 K game rated number 1. Not endorsing that, just reporting.
I don’t think Craig can be allowed to rest on his laurels with so much work yet to do- Crawford still needs major help, Tim for sure, and long relief is still iffy. A guy who can turn Belt’s season completely around needs to get to work on other under achievers…
Pot-shots at your two favorite whipping boys.
Not at all- I’ve endorsed that Linceum has actually pitched better than Zito and Vogelsong- Loo’s FIP note got me studying. Try some of that yourself. As to Crawford, if critisizing a guy who is hitting .226 with a .283 OBP added to erratic defense makes him a “whipping boy”, so be it. But you need to discontinue making inaccurate statements about my posts.
And nothing was a “potshot” anyway- no sane person thinks Tim doesn’t need to pitch better, and no knowledgable person thinks Crawford has been adequate. Beyond that, it was light hearted post whioch be obvious from the tenor- obviously Belt kinda hit those HRs without Craig’s help…
And I don’t have “whipping BOYS”, anyway. I fairly assess the performances of the men who play here. When they suck- I say so. When they improve or prove me wrong-I say so. For instance I properly knocked Pagan for his abysmal hitting as the one hitter and properly praised his work after his move to the five.
Besides, how bad a guy can I be, letting you plug “Pumkin Flax Granola” on my *food* page π
One of the amazing things was the few times later in the game when Cain had 3-2 pitches and, with the perfect game on the line, he threw great pitches with good location, and good movement to get the outs. That’s coming through under unbelievable pressure.
I remember all of those instances, Zume…and recall having the same thought. How fricking tough is Cain to knuckle-down in those instances and “getter done!”
Just listening to the replay of the 9th inning…wow! Awesome stuff…
The Splash has Cains 27 outs video
Blanco and Arias get gold gloves for those two plays!!
It is a great effort by Cain and if anyone could ever be deserving of such a game it is him. Dude is a stud. I don’t care if it was against Houston. It doesn’t cheapen the accomplishment at all in my book. These are MLB hitters. They may not be all stars but they’re all at the top of their profession; in The Show and nothing is easy about 27 straight being sent back to grab some pine.
Great lead Flavor. I was thinking some of the same things about the game this morning. Maybe it is the nature of the sport but it made me think of guys like Blanco and Arias just as much. Players that have stayed dedicated to their craft. Bounced around and hung on to their dreams. They’ve now been part of something special they’ll never forget regardless of what happens this season. Then you’ve got someone like Schierholtz who someohow are witness to history ; Olympics, World Series, perfect game.
14 Ks. 7 swinging (one a dropped ball and thrown out by Buster Ballgame), 7 watching.
You know, with the Cain performance highlighting even more his #1 or #2 starting status, I wouldn’t be surprised if Bochy/Rags skip a rotation for Tim work on mechanics and give him another shot at a start vs just throwing him in the pen.
Giants are not at halftime yet and maybe Cain’s action will jolt Tim a little…. Sometimes players feed off of each other and in this case Tim TRUELY wants to get back in the pack….
Dennis – Bochy has been very public (and adamant) that the best thing to do is to keep “throwing Timmy out there.” Unless something changes…it won’t happen.
The older Snarkkette and I were toodling around Olympic watching the golf all day, then ate dinner in the City, didn’t hear or see the game, but looks like the Giants stomped the Stros.
Anything interesting happen?…
Yeah, right…did anything “interesting” happen…LQTM…
Geez, I joked about nominees for POTG and Ted, of all people, jumped my ass for it.
Now, now I was just playing around
But I must admit you were just so right on about the HRs- this little outburst puts them at 11 already, so obviously I was out of line thinking they wouldn’t hit a bunch at home. What’s funny is that with all the ignorant fretting about the offense, one of the few realistic views gets picked at. Really, if more paid attention, they could start to get a clue on WHY we’re not to hit many here. In 2010 we had Uribe, Burrell, Buster, and to a lesser degree Pablo; taking advantage of a friendly LF here. We simply have very little RH power. The numbers should improve as Panda gets back in the groove, Posey ( 1 HR here) kicks in,. and Belt hopefully continues to go deep- but without acquistions, we just don’t have the fire power from the right side- I didn’t list Melky and Pagan, at home they might be worth 10 between them
After Loo brought up the ” Fielding Independant Pitching” stat, I did some studying , something that wouldn’t hurt those who insist their keen eye and non-biased insight trumps any pack of lies from the commie statgeeks..Craig uses a simlar stat , xERA, both are similar in that they evaluate pitching performance not dependant on fielding behind the pitcher. Both stats confirm what everyone should already know- Zits. my whipping man, is our worst pitcher and Tim has been the main victim of our spotty defense to date.
Obviously, Tim’s work needs to improve because we know Zitter is going to faceplant as he has done the 58 other times the naive have thought him to be baaaaaaaccccccck..
Faceplant on 1…2…3…
Congrats to Cain. Great performance, and the defense behind was stellar with some standout plays, which is usually the case in no hitters/perfect games. Blanco should be the starting CF, with Pagan in LF and Melky RF, but I guess it’s too late now to change it. Belt is starting to sting the ball, that is great news. Hopefully, not an aberration. That shot to center was long. He’s probably finally ignored all the swing changes from Bam Bam and Bochy and gone back to his old swing…
He said that in a comcast interview after Tuesday’s game..
I hadn’t heard that. Figures. They F’d with his swing so much he probably just thought screw it, my head’s exploding, I’ll just swing like I used to. A tweak here and there while playing is fine, normal. But, even Tiger doesn’t F with his swing during the season, he waits till Winter and then installs the major overhaul…
It was only the βStros? Astros are 9th in the 16-team NL in hits and 8th in runs. While not impressive, itβs not the worst either, and theyβre ranked higher than division leaders Cincinnati and Washington. And Altuve is tied for 4th in all of MLB in hits.
Mac, I hope you understand that Olney said it, I just reported what he said.
Absolutely, not intended at you. It’s ridiculous for the Olneys of the world to diminish such an achievement. I posted the same on Facebook to an Astros fan who said it was a AAA lineup.
F Olney. 27 up and 27 down is a near impossible feat and he should shut his pie hole. Anyone of those AAA players could have hit a squibber and broke up the whole thing. Or like Cain’s start against the Pirates the pitcher could have ended it.
Next Stop for Matt Cain….”The Dave Letterman Show”
Can’t wait for that its gonna be AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hopefully he’ll have him read “The Top Ten Reasons The Dodgers Suck”
Miller keeping the radio/tv crowd directly informed about the perfecto all along is the mark of a pro. Everybody in the park knows it, all the players know it, why shouldn’t the radio/tv fans tuning in or out at various points in the game know it? The baseball superstition about not mentioning it is just silly, as the final outcome proved…
Well, there are a BUNCH of silly motherfuckers out there…
We prefer the term, “Mentally Challenged Descendants of Oedipus.”
It would be easier to take the taboo seriously if one believed that no one in the world had uttered the no-no no-no words before Miller foolishly subjected his children and their children and their children’s children to the Curse of the No-No Utterance.. angry locusts are no picnic.
lowrie, btw, is 0-7 with 4 Ks here at ATT. Of course if we pick him up he doesn’t have to try and hit off our PS.
The giants have been playing so well recently that it might be hard to be objective about adding anything to the mix. but looking at dodgers puff ball LU and inexperience, you have to figure they are going to do something with an eye to post season. Jansen has lost a couple games as closer too including last night.
I’d also be interested to know who the dark haired babe was sitting with Mrs. Cain to her left.
WillieD – That would be Mrs. Vogelsong…
Leave it to the fucking Canadians to come up with a shot like this. Awesome shot…even Lou got into the mix.
http://blogs.canada.com/2012/06/14/matt-cain-makes-san-francisco-giants-history-with-perfect-game/
His wife’s reaction was kind of weird. I don’t remember the exact words, but it was like, “I’m happy for the guy”…
I noticed that too. Seemed to be a wierd dynamic between the two of them.
Good read here…Cain even has some kudos for the ump…BTW…first ump to call two perfect games. How wild is that…
http://tinyurl.com/76labqt
Just showed Gregor’s catch to a couple people who couild care less about baseball and it blew them away. Blew me away again, and I’ve seen it 30 times minimum.
I love after the catch when he is shaking the dirt out from under his belt…damn near a whole truckload of dirt…LMAO…
not sure as to Cain’s current family status, but as I recall they had bought a house in Noe Valley, which I think is pretty cool. wonder what kind of reaction and questions he gets from the folks back home in Tennessee. Sure famous athletes can be above a lot of stuff, but he and the lttle woman (and kids?) still have to go out, do shopping, and go to the park, which can be quite interesting in SF ( tough enough just to park, period). Wonder if he just kind of shrugs it off like he seems to on the mound.
I know his house was on the market not long ago (this before he signed his new contract). Not sure what the status is now…but with him basically locked-up to be a Giant for life…I am sure he will keep a place in the Bay Area. I think they have one kid…a little girl, I believe.
One girl child, less than 2. Yeah, I saw where his old house in Upper Noe was for sale a while back. No clue where they are now. Offseason lives in AZ, tax reasons I’m sure. Maybe with the new contract. they BOUGHT the entire apartment building where Timmeh allegedly “trashed” his unit…
Well, if he had a month to month rental, maybe he can get Crawford in there.
Blanco RF, Theriot 2B, Cabrera LF, Pagan CF, Sandoval 3B, Sanchez C, Belt 1B, Arias SS, (Zito P)
Played the lotto last night. Just checked, didn’t hit it. I was actually kinda surprised I missed π
They must have given your ticket to someone else. If the clerk retires next week you got hosed.
lqtm.
But for Juan Uribe, Dirrrty’s no-no was a perfecto.
That’s basically two perfectos from the same staff in three seasons. That’s gotta be a record.
Rags ought to get a few props or at least a top drawer steakhouse dinner, since he gets some crap when the pitching isn’t working…
Yesterday at Olympic, the older Snarkkette and I sat behind the first tee bleachers for about 6 groups and watched ’em tee off, the last being Rory McIlroy along with Irish buddy Graham McDowelle, along with Adam Scott (ex Tiger caddy Stevie is now his caddy) and Ian Poulter, the guy that wears funky pants. We followed them for a few holes — interesting, after teeing off the Irish dudes stuck together chatting down the fairway every hole, the other two were always off ahead of them. BTW, that course is a beast. Gorgeous, but a beast. We walked about 1/2 way down that 670 yard par 5 monsterr, then I stopped and called a cab. I wouldn’t be surprised if even par wins it, maybe a few under. Adam Scott looked in pretty good form, I’d guess he’s got a good shot at it. On tee #1, a coupla guys had seen McIlroy throw out the first pitch the other night at ATT — they yelled out when he was walking into the tee area — “Hey McIlroy — ya’ throw like a girl!”…
No everyone is perfect…Huff banged his knee into the dugout rail as he tried to make his way to the scrum on the mound to go celebrate. He will undergo a precautionary MRI to rule out any potential structural damage.
At least Dennis is perfect being the Dos Equis guy.
Here’s the link. I thought you were joking, DMD. Then I found the story.
Maybe they’ve found the way to put Huff in long term “Zito storage”…
http://www.csnbayarea.com/baseball-san-francisco-giants/giants-talk/Huff-hurts-knee-celebrating-perfect-game?blockID=724850&feedID=2796
Hmm . . . “Zito Storage” or “Zito Stasis Hypersleep” per that dumb science fiction movie I recently saw, Prometheus. To wit, in this state you can walk, talk, throw a ball 75 MPH, and not even be conscious or age a day, while traveling to another galaxy.
Geez, Denny, I just looked for Mr. Jiggles on the leader board, he just ahead of the eldest Snarkette..obviously the pressure of having Tiger back was just too much for his tender composition..
For you golf & music fans: There’s a 49-year-old club pro from Jersey named Mark McCormick who’s playing his first Open after qualifying last week. His caddie? Vini “Mad Dog” Lopez, the original drummer for Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band.
As I talked about last night- it would be just wrong to overturn the scorer’s call on the hit in the Met game… even though I do think it was an error. It was in the first inning- and about the only thing that can be said about how Dickey would have pitched if it was ruled an error is that he would *not* have pitched a no hitter. There is just no comparison pitching with one hit already on board.
You know you’re a stud when Letterman wants you to do the top ten. His people have contacted the Giants. Best performance I have ever seen. Cheers.
I’m still waiting for Letterman to contact our resident seer, “Flav the Magnificent” . . . Letterman will have “arrived” when the Flavster is on his show. π
Haha! I might just send Flav some cash. . We can split the winnings 50/50
Well, no no-no or perfecto, today…
Willie, after the game one of the rporters asked Matt if he felt any different when he woke up (before the no0-no). He said no, we went out for breakfast, took the dog to the dog park, and played all morning with his daughter.
Do they HAVE dog parks in SF?
They do in my neighborhood, Pacific Heights and there’s a couple In Golden Gate Park
With that scoreless first, Zito has just lowered his ERA from 3.24 down to 3.19.
FIP this!
Can we not do the Zito ERA check after each inning?
Well, now he will.
No, he won’t (and this was for everyone, btw). Zito’s era is going up from here, not down. And since ANY ERA check by the inning would just be designed to irritate, i’m putting the kibosh on it…
I haven’t seen too many Astros on base lately but still, seeing Altuve standing on third base I had to do a double take. That guy would look up to everyone, including my main man DJ Loo
Digging Theriot. He’s been hitting pretty well lately.
And playing some good D.
Yet they removed him for Manny late.
Yeah, that was a head-scratcher. Bochy in the post-game (and I paraphrase)…I wanted to get him some playing time and he plays pretty good defense. I thought the timing sucked. Oh well, it all worked out, but what a strangely-timed move….
Burriss came in the T6. Since when has the 6th inning become “late?”
I think what it was, Chi, was that he was making the move to get more range out there, and he was trying to dance around the post-game statement without making a criticism of Theriot, so it came out kind of odd.
The 6th is late when you’re up by 10…
Matt had only gone 5 perfect. The point being: Burriss coming in had NOTHING to do with him as a defensive replacement. Bochy was just trying to find the POS some playing time with the game already in hand.
You are absolutely the wrong person to have any idea of why the SF manager does anything. Maybe you can keep us up to date on your guy, Donnie. Going to the 6th with a perfect game might get lost on your fella, but Bochy was well aware of it.
All the credit on the radio this am seemed to go to Blanco’s catch but Arias’ play to end the game was fantastic. He threw a rocket, flat footed, from about the deepest part of third base you could get without being either foul or on the OF grass…
Agreed, the pressure on that pick and throw was enormous. Cain needs to buy him and Blanco a Rolex, or a car. Excellent move by Bochy getting Arias in earlier for Panda. No way Panda makes that pick from where Arias was positioned…
agreed. I don’t know about *no way* but *extremely unlikely* for sure
There was another one by Arias where he threw high, and Belt did a good job to bring it in and keep his foot on the bag. Of course…not much of a problem when you’re 13 feet tall!
Whole lotta walking goin’ on
Of all the nights to go to bed at a reasonable time on the East Coast. sigh. I got a call and a text around 1 a.m. from Gio, in Tampa, telling me to turn in my Giants fan card. Hey, maybe I’d’ve jinxed it. So happy for Matty and the team and the franchise and the city and the fans. Thrilling to watch the replays. Even got a congrats text at 5:30am from someone, as if I was a team member. What a gorgeous night. Sorry to have missed it, but….what can you do?
It WAS the catcher, so Arias did have time th set himself.
But yeah, outstanding play.
Fuck Bubbles . . . . .
Melky didn’t even look.
It’s getting bubbly in here.
He’s baaaaaaaaaack.
Fucking Zito…walk walk walk…Salami!
Knew it was too much to ask for a sweep…even of the lowly Afros…
Zito reverts back to ugliness …3 straight Walks and a Mammoth Grand Slam in this throwaway game.
Tiger -1, phil +6, bubba +8. must have been an interesting round.
It was only a matter of time!! all the talk of Zits being the man was just smoke and mirrors
not sure what Zito is doing. After committing to NOT throwing his FB much this year and a huge increase in the # of slider’s he’s throwing, in the 2nd inning he threw 26 pitches and only 2 sliders. Maybe he doesn’t have today so they aren’t throwing it but going back to throwing FB’s is a death wish……
Despite my well known and spot on analysis of the Zitter and the certainty that he will eventually go feet up, I appreciate every decent start we get from his sorry ass. At one time we were better if he just sucked full out, because we had 4 other good starters. But until Tim gets his act fully together, we do need some decent outings from him. So a couple more quality starts before he does the Full Zitter would be nice.
People that didn’t see the game- I don’t know what your TV situation is, but Bay Area Comcast is replaying the game tonight and also next Thursday night, I think.
If not, it’s well worth 25 bucks or so to get the MLB package.
Are you working out Lefty’s FIP yet, Denny?
I love all the pussies who jump all over Zito when he has a bad inning (a bad inning I explained above as he inexplicably went back to throwing FB’s and only 2 sliders). Timmy has had a million bad innings this year.
Well, he has been dancing with the devil all year (with the walks). He’s on pace to have the most BBs in a season in his career. Just pissed me off that he walks the bases drunk and then gives one up. So, yeah…I jumped ALL OVER HIS FUCKING ASS…
And…I’ve been all over Timmy, too…the walks are usually what lead to his horrific innings, too.
Belt!
that was a monster HR.
Belt;s on a roll. I’d imagine he’s shooting up the All Star balloting for 1st basemen
No, we jump all over the pussy Zito and his pussy apologists for his 500th shitty inning as a Giant..
And the slider theory was destroyed-as he pitched almost EXACTLY the same into mid-June of 2010-featuring fastballs..
wrong. You month/month thing is bullshit. He was throwing the same # of FB’s and sliders in 2010. It was only this year that it changed dramatically. THAT is the reason why he’s been pitching better this year. Luck and other things contributed to his nice run in 2010…….
Wrongo-the pernt, and inarguably presented.. is that he succeeded just as well without this slider revolution. He’s changed what he does and how and what he throws over and over- he sucks, pal. Arguing for him and against Timmy is a Denny troll spiel. I’m shocked you bought it. The luck, as both FIP and your xERA show- is this year
I know what his xERA is, and it’s worse than what you posted yesterday (at least, the xERA that I use). Timmy has a decent FIP. Big fucking deal. That stat doesn’t factor in anything MENTAL which is what I’ve SAID is his problem this year. If he doesn’t get the mental breakdown fixed then his FIP isn’t going to mean shit…….
Maybe the Gyros have found themselves a first baseman. The guy I and others said over and over should just be played every damn day until he proves he belongs or not.
3 days and only 3 HRs — boy, not good enough, Bam Bam better work with him tomorrow in Seattle on some new “adjustments”…
