The Adam (I’m So) Dunn Award

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 23, 2012

Today, we’re going to vote on the First Annual *Adam (I’m So) Dunn” award. It’s a made-up award created by me and voted on by Flapper Nation. It goes to the player who has had an inexplicably poor year after the previous year. I realize it’s only July 23rd but just play along and cast your vote. Consider the plight of Adam Dunn: In 2010 he hit .260 with 38 bombs and a sparkling .892 OPS for The Nationals. After signing a 4 year/56 million dollar deal with the White Sox, he packed his bags and headed for life in the AL. The ‘Sox like the idea of getting  a hitter who you could basically pencil in for 40 bombs a year (he hit 40 each year from ’06 to ’08). Who wouldn’t like that? But after homering in his first game of the 2011 season, his season started to take a long, slow, downward turn. It was a spiral that would have no end. He hit in the .160’s to .170’s virtually the entire year. At one point, I noticed he had struck out 161 times and his batting average was .161. “I bet that’s never happened before,” I commented to The Boney One as we boarded a flight headed down to San Diego. He nodded his head in knowing approval……

Dunn went on to hit 11 home runs in 496 at bats for the ‘Sox in 2011. He had 42 RBI’s. His batting average was an unsightly .159 and his OPS a limp .569. It was a spectacularly bad season……

Life’s turned brighter for The Big Donkey. He’s had a decent bounce back year. Through 404 at bats this year he’s blasted 28 dingers and his OPS is a healthy .844. The ‘Sox will live with his .204 batting average if he ends up hitting 40+ home run, which it looks like he’s going to do this year…….

_______________________________________________________

I will now give you the nominees for this year’s Adam (I’m So) Dunn Award. I identified 14 players and 5 will make the unceremonious cut to be voted on. A player qualified if they were having a much worse year this year than last year. If you had an extended injury I disqualified you and I didn’t pick any closers because they are all insane and no one knows why they pitch good or bad from year to year. In no particular order, here we go:

1) Jon Lester. Despite Fried-Chicken-And-Beer-Gate, Lester had a pretty good year in 2011. He was 15-9 with a 3.47 ERA. This year, he has not been able to overcome the dastardly ways of “The Colonel”. He’s 5-7 with a 4.80 ERA.

2) James Shields. In 2011 he went 16-12, 2.82 ERA, 1.04WHIP. He was a horse and known for reliably going deep into games. This year he’s still going pretty deep into games and his opponents love it, he’s given up the most hits in the league. His ERA has ballooned to 4.39 and his WHIP has jumped to 1.44.

3) Ricky Romero– 15-11 in 2011 with a 2.92 ERA/1.14 WHIP. This year? He’s lost 5 starts in a row, and his ERA is a bulbis 5.22. He’s rollin’ with a *Tyler Walker WHIP* of 1.50

4) Adam Lind. He swatted out 26 big flys in 2011 with 87 ribbies and a .251 batting average. This year, he went to the minors due to general suckitude and though he’s back now he’s only got 8 HR’s and 27 rbi’s for the year.

5) Carlos Santana—He hit 27 bombs and an .808 OPS in 2011. He was everybody’s wiseguy pick to have a big year in 2012. Who’s the wiseguy now? That’d be Carlos, he’s hit 6 home runs this year.

6) Dirrrrrrrrty Sanchez. I almost didn’t include him because he spent some time on the DL this year. But, he’s spent more time off it and plus, I miss typing that name. You all know the deal. In 2011 he was 4-7 with a 4.26 ERA/1.44 WHIP. He got flipped for the current NL hits leader and in return the Royals got 1 win, a 7.66 ERA and a mindblowingly unreal WHIP of 2.04. Her has since been sent on a one way bus ticket to Colorado…….

7) Albert Poo-holes. He hasn’t had that terrible of a year but I always enjoy the big dolla’ free agent signing taking a shit for their new team. Last year, he hit 37 bombs, .299  BA, .906 OPS. This year, he didn’t hit his first home run until May 6th. At the time, he was hitting .196. Since then, he’s bumped his HR total up to an *average*17 and his OPS up to .830. He won’t make the Top 5 to vote on but I thought I’d throw him into the Top 14……..

8) Mike Napoli. He went bezerko in the 2nd half of last year. After the all star break he hit .383 with an otherworldly 1.171 OPS. I loved what this guy did because it made The Angels look so impossibly stupid for trading Napoli *FOR* Vernon Wells. At the time of the trade, I remarked at how incredibly dumb it was to trade FOR a guy with 80 million left on his deal coming off a shaky, one-off bounce back year. Wells has sunk back into his customary spot in *the tank* and Napoli went on to bust out for the Rangers last year.

But this year has not been an encore year for The ‘Nap. He’s hitting .236 with a .783 OPS. His HR’s are still there (14) but that’s about it.

9) Jair Jurrjens– The guy with too many *j’s* and *r’s* in his name had quite a nice 2011. He was 13-6, 2.92 ERA and opponents hit .249 off of him. He made the all star game. Besides having a difficult name to spell, life was grand. This year, it’s the weird name and nothing else. He was so bad in 2012 that he got sent down to the minors. He’s back now and getting lit up like fireworks with a 6.20 ERA. Opponents are bludgeoning him at a .330 clip….

10) Cliff Lee. He went 17-8 in 2011 with a 2.46 ERA and a remarkable 1.03 WHIP. This year he hasn’t been pitching bad but he’s got 1 win. ONE. 1? Yes, 1……..

11) Justin Upton. He busted out last year for the Dirrrrrrrty Snakes by hitting .289 with 31 big flys and 21 sb’s. Hoping to take the next step towards *MVP territory* it has not happened for him in 2012. He’s got 8 measly home runs and only 11sb’s. He’s being booed by his home town fans and he’s rumored to be traded by the break.

12) Ian Kennedy. Another Dirrrrrrty Snake, he finished 4th in the CY voting going 21-4, 2.88 ERA and 1.09 WHIP. Like many of the D-backs, he’s having a down year. He’s 7-8 with a 4.33 ERA.

13) Cam Maybin. It never happened for Cam as a Marlin and they traded him to the Pads in 2010 for a couple of middle relievers. Boom! he went off in 2011 hitting .264 with 40 stolen bags. The Padres said “We Likey” and handed him a 5 year/25 million dollar deal. However in 2012, it has been a struggle. He’s been hitting .200 for most of the year, recently bumping his average up to .221. He’s stolen 18 bags. ZZZZzzzzzz. 25 million used to buy more……

14) Jesus Guzman. Yeah! I love this guy! He can’t field a lick but the Pads gave him a shot in 2011 and he had a very nice year at the plate. He hit .312 and had an .847 OPS. This year, he’s been caught between the moon and New York City: .240ba/.701 OPS.

I was going to include Timmy in the Top 15 and he definitely belongs there, but he’s had 2 nice starts in a row and it doesn’t seem right to include him on the list since this is a Giants blog. So that’s your list of 14 nominees for The 2012 Adam (I’m So) Dunn Award.

I’ve now cut that list to 5 for you Flappers to now vote on. The criteria to make the Top 5 was arbitrary and subjective. It took all of my mental strength to not put Dirrrrrrty Sanchez in the vote but I’ve managed to keep him out. I didn’t want him to skew the results….

By the way, Dennis deferred to me today, he will be taking my spot on Wednesday. WillieD, you are still up tomorrow……

I heard Denny was up all night listening to someone scream “NNaaaattttte” into his message machine.
My vote would go to Fielder: 37 bombs last year and currently setting on 15, but that is another story and he was not included.
I will say for the record that it is what I consider completely abnormal for a MLB player to have huge swings in ability season to season. WTF?

He was strongly considered by the (1 person) panel but in the end, his .308 batting average disqualified him….

He would have been a Dunn award nominee last season. His drop-off was after the ’10 season.

I’m not a Carlos Santana guy. I think his guitar work is a bit overrated. Now his current wife, Cindy Blackman is a killer drummer and not bad looking. Oh wait, a different Santana? But I’m still not giving him the vote.

James Shields has killed me this year in the Flap fantasy league. But he doesn’t get my vote (although DMD will in another month).

Mike Napoli? Maybe last year was a fluke. He doesn’t get my vote.

Jair Jurrjens sounds like some weird cocktail or a champion ice speed skater, so he doesn’t get the vote.

Justin Upton gets my vote. He has so much talent that he’ll either turn it around for another team or he’ll be the next Milton Bradley and piss it all away.

watched pujols whack a double and his 18th HR last night. He has guys hitting in front of him like Trout and behind him like Trumbo Kendrick, Morales…end of the year he should have pretty dang good numbers.
I’d vote Jurrjiens. Shields might get traded and be better elsewhere for a month, and I think Lester comes up with an *injury* that shoves him to the DL for a while. I still can’t believe bobby v left him in long enough to throw 94 pitches in 4 plus and get whacked around for 4 bombs and 11 earned. Almost seems like Patrick Roy territory.
Couple other DBax as you mention having down seasons: Young who is now hitting .213 and Drew at .217. They are almost as close to the Padres as they are to the Giants this year. They have the same team as last year, added Kubel and get a full year out of Golds and Hill—pitching fails to live up to expectations, I guess. So much for mgr of the year gibson.

Flav, what a fun read, How about Gaby Sanchez for the list? 2011 — a respectable 19-78, .266 avg., .779 OPS; 2012 — a putrid 3-17, .202/.556, and now serving his second stint this season with the New Orleans Zephyrs.

He would have been a great pick except I tried to stay away from the players who didn’t play much this year–just the guys who have been smoking copious amounts of pole for most/all the 2012 season at the big league level

WillieD– if you thought that was bad, here’s a box score that seems hard to believe. Look how long Mazzaro was left in this game.

ouch, very ugly. Mazzaro tho is a hanger on, while lester is guy they are paying a lot of $$$ to and counting on to take his turn regularly. Not the type of guy you leave in there to take one for the team and rest the pen.
I notice the guy the Royals got to replace Sanchez (guthrie) got hammered first time out for them too.

Yeah, I don’t pay too much attention to a lot of these guys, but Upton certainly deserves a nod. The guy was lights-out for 2009 through 2011. Now his numbers are way down and the team seems to have soured on him.

Edd,. up until recently, the big dropoff in ability could point to getting off the roids. Don’t know if it’s still happening (yes, roiding is still out there), but I think these guys have it figured out better how not to get caught.

    Weatherproof games: Braves-Marlins, Reds-Astros, Rockies-Diamondbacks and Yankees-Mariners

Orioles-Indians likely will be delayed because of thunderstorms in Cleveland, but the rain won’t last long enough to warrant a postponement. Cubs-Pirates and Twins-White Sox may also be affected by storms arriving in the late innings of their game, but the tarps won’t be on the fields very long.

Well, not base ball news or views, but the BBC, bless its little pea picking heart, just released 24 HD channels devoted to Olympic Coverage. All with no commercials and a user controlled menu for which item, camera, etc you may prefer.
they announced another 24 channels of standard def as well for people that don’t have HD TVs. Unfortunately it is not ‘over-the-air’ like all the other BBC channels: 5 telly, 2 children’s, 7 Radio. So you will need cable, free sat or pay sat.

24 freakin’ channels! Supposedly one will be able to watch every event every day (and recording 1 or 2 other events that conflict with the one you are watching.

In spring training, I saw Jair Jurrjens not doing jack shit this year. Arm problems, coupled with a slooooooooooooow fastball. I had him on another FL team and traded his ass immediately after our draft. Poor sap that took him is still cussing me out.

Carlos Santana, the player that everyone on the east coast thought was going to grab the brass ring – including myself, i.e., I had him on two fantasy league teams – fell completely on his face. In one league, I got lucky and traded his pathetic non-producing weak spaghetti noodle bat for Salvatore Perez. In the Flap League, Kevin traded Ruiz to me for Santana . . . and threw in Ryan Braun as well. HA. No further comment is necessary, except thank you, thank you, thank you . . . 🙂

  16. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 23, 2012 at 10:30 am

The more I think about, the more I think that the man with three Js shouldn’t even be in this discussion. Why?

Flav, Jurrjens had a 12-4 record, a 1.87 ERA before the 2011 All Star Game. He won exactly one game the rest of the way, posting a 5.88 ERA in seven starts. His right knee — the one that required arthroscopic surgery prior to the season — began to bother him, landing him on the DL for a two-week stretch in early August and sidelining him for good in early September.

In short, this guy was the shits in the second half last year and the writing was on the wall that he would not perform this year.

  17. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 23, 2012 at 10:38 am

I eliminated Jurrjens because of injury. It’s a bit harsh, IMO, to say he was “the shits” when injury was a factor, as it surely was with him.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 23, 2012 at 10:52 am

Yeah, one factor – big deal. I already alluded to his poor fastball, i.e., his strikeout rate is one of the poorest for a starting pitcher. All his peripheral stats point to his first half last year being smoke and mirrors. In other words, LUCK. The year before in 2010, this guy had a 4.64 ERA. His one outstanding year was 2009, where he pitched over 200 innings and had a good ERA of 2.60. This year he has taken losses in back-to-back starts with 14 earned runs allowed over a span of just 5 2/3 innings. Jurrjens’ ERA is now up to an ugly 7.04 on the season for Atlanta . . . and he isn’t injured.

By the by, this isn’t me only saying this – go to any of the baseball sites and they will say worse about him.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 23, 2012 at 11:23 am

As I said, it’s a bit harsh to say a guy who was injured was “the shits”. He seems to have had lucky years in 2008 and 2009 as well. As to claiming injury is not a factor this year- you might check his first and second half splits from last year before you make faulty conclusions about his peripherals and his health. 12-3 1.87 1.066 WHIP in the first half wasn’t lucky..and he only pitched 41 innings after the ASG.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 23, 2012 at 11:26 am

As I said yesterday, PSU took the dagger now, rather than the sword later had they challenged anything. The $60 million is paid in 5 annual installments, not up front, and how it will be used is vague, to say the least. Seems to me mainly a PR move, since how far can $12M per year go on a national basis to help a huge child abuse problem out there? All the chest beating in the media this morning that the given sanctions are worse than the death penalty is bogus. PSU is still playing football on Saturdays, without interruption. The penalties only impact the quality of the football program over the next five or six years, not its existence. 100,000 loyal JoePa lapdogs will still be tailgaiting every other fall afternoon, no interruption. A suspension of the program was the only thing that would have sent a needed shock wave to the institution and the rotten culture around it that football cannot control the entire institution. PSU is still eligible to have games televised, which is ridiculous…

I still get stunned when I read about baseball contracts. Dempster is in the last year of a 4 year deal worth $52 million. He’s been pretty decent for the Cubs, 1.29 WHIP and 3.63 ERA since 2008, so I guess that is a “fair” deal these days, but sheesh…

I would eliminate quite a few players because I don’t consider the drop off inexplicable if they only had one good year ever. I also eliminate those coming off injury. My two of those I didn’t eliminate, in a tie, would be Upton and Kennedy. What’s interesting about the DBacks is that they’re scoring the same as last year, they’re second in the NL in defense, and the pitching isn’t far off- 4.00 to 3.80. The diff? Good ole pythagorean W-L. Last year they were incredibly lucky- 6 games better than the pythagorean W-L of 88-74. This year, the record is 3 worse- 47-48 true vs. 50-45 pythagorean.

On Chris Perez, I’d think he’d be no better or worse than Casilla. If there’s an advantage in getting him it would be that Santiago could get back to his 7th inning chores and we can dump Penny or Hensley. The question would be cost and the Indians will want more than we should give them. So, on balance- no.

Still like the Giants to consider a trade with the Rays for Jeremy Hellickson.Could use him as aSpot/ Starter for insurance or the pen for now.Could easily be in the rotation next year if Zits or Vogy struggle.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 23, 2012 at 2:43 pm

Kat, good post . . . I have no idea if the Giants are interested in him or if the Rays are shopping him (are they?).

My only concern about Hellickson is that his strikeout rate is so low, which is really weird, since it was excellent and a big part of his game during his minor league career. When he was ROY 2 years ago, his strikeout rate of 5.6 per nine innings ranked 74th among the 93 pitchers who qualified for the ERA title and he didn’t compensate with a low walk rate. His .223 BABIP certainly helped. Per CBS Sports.com, ” . . . he doesn’t have much hope of repeating it considering it was the lowest for any pitcher with at least 180 innings in 23 years.”

In any event, he pitched good in his last start and his ERA remains good for a guy who has lost his last six decisions.

Just something to consider when we are fantasizing about trade targets: teams rarely move players who they can control for multiple years. Sometimes players like that get swapped (I’m thinking Jesus Montero for Michael Pineda). But usually, especially for a deadline deal, it’s a guy who’s going to be a free agent the following year or maybe has another year on his deal.
That’s why Carlos Quentin is interesting (not for us, just in general). The Padres gave him 3 years/27 mil during a time when he is supposedly a trade target. Did they just not get any offers they liked because GM’s have questions about his health? Or did they decide to make his future worth known so a GM wouldn’t have to worry about him walking next year? I just found it to be a weird time for the Padres to extend him, especially with his health concerns…….

This is a blog and I personally think it is worthwhile and quite interesting to discuss possible trades and free agent signings. Thank God you are not the arbiter of what is discussed here. Nevertheless, once again, in a subtle “Gee, look at how smart I am” way you criticize Flappers for discussing “what if” situations, such as trades and free agent signings.

Your MO was in full mode earlier today, when you asked AlleyKat, “So who would you give up for Hellickson, Kat?” This is your classic question on how you instigate shit here.

Why do I care? I wont mention names, but you have already chased away friends of the Flap, where they refuse to post anymore due to your behavior; and moreover, I wont stand by anymore when I think you are being unfair and/or bullying someone. • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 23, 2012 at 6:10 pm

Agree snarkk. Did you catch Baggs comment?

“The Giants need more threats on their bench. They certainly require more production out of their first basemen. They aren’t getting it from Belt, who was 0 for 5 with three strikeouts to finish a rotten, 1-for-20 road trip. He’s in a 2-for-27 slide since the All-Star break that has the Giants pondering anything and everything.”

Bagg also commented after Zito’s comments below:

“To be the guy who was able to get two starts on this trip and put up quality starts, that’s good,” Zito said. “This team is obviously built on pitching and defense. The offense has been great. We just need to keep the pressure off them and let them know if we can score three or four, we’ll come out with a win.”

Not to channel Charlie Manuel on you, Barry, but the Giants offense is good, not great. Actually, it’s a little less than good. Marginally satisfactory? That’s more like it.”

Steve, you are now constantly making direct and personal attacks when none were made to you to or anyone else.
It’s an unfortunate fact that many don’t understand the basis of how trades go down and pointing that out may be uncomfortable for those who don’t undersatand- it’s still true. But what’s of import here is that you are over the line.
Who Kat would trade for Hellickson is a fair, in fact necessary question, to discuss his proposal. Now YOU are the one who needs to tone it down. Please do so.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 23, 2012 at 5:39 pm

Let’s not get into *over the line* talk. And Twin, I think if you had posted something first about controllable players being difficult to acquire your question to Kat “So who would you trade for him, Kat?” wouldn’t have looked like such a set up question.

If it was directed at you, you should be upset. Partly for me saying it, partly if you were one of those who doesn’t understand trade basics. This is a baseball blog. It’s reasonable to expect that some basics are understood. I intentionally didn’t name names. We get a lot of absolutely absurd trade proposals that are routinely shot down by many here, not just me. Helickson, in fact, was not unreasonable-the Rays have said they’ll listen to offers. The presumption that I was going to tear into Kat was not correct.

    RF Pagan

    3B Arias

    SS Crawford

    P Vogelsong

If the process of benching Belt is starting then shouldn’t it get taken all the way to Fresno? I mean, what’s the point of keeping him on the team at this point? He needs to go down and get his confidence back with a couple of months of hitting AAA pitching………

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 23, 2012 at 5:45 pm

At this point maybe he should go down but I’d still posit that as bad as he’s been, he has a better chance of producing runs than Arias or Whitey. If they’re going to something that is of any potential of helping this year and beyond, they’ll need to get someone from outside the sytem- a guy who can also play the OF. IMO.

    • Berger's avatar Berger said, on July 23, 2012 at 5:59 pm

I can’t disagree, heck I even mentioned that yesterday. I think before that, they can maybe work on some timing stuff for a day or two to give him something to go to Fresno and work on. If they get lucky maybe they can catch lightning in a bottle. Get him tuned a little and see if he gets it fast. Or as you say, send him down now. I’m OK with either. But something needs to done fast.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 23, 2012 at 6:00 pm

Agreed. If they’re going to bash Belt, then send him to AAA and get 100 ABs the next six weeks until callups. Pill can come up until the end of the month and they decide what else to do, if anything. Similar question is what’s the point of Burriss? He plays once in a blue moon, yet he’s here. No options left, I guess, and supposedly no alternatives. I find it hard to believe you can’t find an alternative anywhere, including in the system, that is better than Burriss. I won’t rehash any more of that, he’s probably gone in a week. He better be…

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 23, 2012 at 6:05 pm

On the other hand,Hellickson is a perfect fit to me.Young twenty three,ROY Pitcher who throws nasty stuff, alittle erratic especially with his curveball, but under the right tutelage of Rags and even Mark Gardner,IMO this guy could be Top of Rotation pitcher in the
near future.Has a demeanor about him I like, ala Vogy.IMO Hellboy has “Star” written all over him.And the Giants keep “Arming” their staff with quality pitchers and kinda make amends of the Wheeler trade as well.
As far as my trade,I don’t like bring them up at the Flap, cause nobody here gives a shit about giving up our own prospects which you do when you have some depth at certain positions. But I will take one for the Flap, and get reemed a New A- hole by. suggesting this trade…Josephs,Peguero,Hembree, low minor leagueprospect, for Hellickson. And if they want Belt, they have to throw in Zobrist are other options for both sides

yes, tonight, if he does any of that and you haven’t instigated anything I will honor my email to you. Hey, Kat’s here, what do you think about his trade idea?

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 23, 2012 at 7:39 pm

Well, Kat, you are giving up our top pitching prospect, one of our 2 or 3 top hitting prospects, and a guy still rated as one of our top ten prospects, PLUS more – for , at best, a number 4 starter. It’s certainly a trade Tampa would make.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 23, 2012 at 7:43 pm

Too bad about Morneau. The Twins had that ‘M&M boys’ thing going for a while, and they were on a roll with it for several years.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 23, 2012 at 6:25 pm

I thought the same thing Zumie. The fact that both of them are not the same, doesn’t detract from the Twins outstanding small market business plan that both players came from. I’m not certain where they rank now, but the Twins looked like they were set up for a dozen years before the injuries occurred to the M & M boys.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 23, 2012 at 6:29 pm

The Twins have some decent hitters right now. Mauer is ALL THE BACK and could possibly win the AL batting title this year. Revere is hitting over his head (IMO) but he steals a bag seemingly everytime he gets on base. Doumit was a fantastic pick up. he hit 2 bombs yesterday, he’s hitting .351 over the last 30 days. Willingham has been super productive. Plouff has been a nice surprise this year for them…
I’m not saying they are all *pieces to the puzzle* but they have some intriguing hitters on their team this year…….

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 23, 2012 at 6:34 pm

I feel ignorant about Mauer – I just checked his stats for this year and you’re absolutely right about him. No idea that he was all the way back from his leg problems last year. News travels slow from Stix’s Minnesota backwoods. 🙂

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 23, 2012 at 6:44 pm

well, it’s been a pretty *quiet .330* if that possible. Drafting him 7th round and Doumit 20th round has worked out in my nfbc leagues. Their batting averages (for catchers) are outstanding and are allowing me to carry guys like Ike Davis and Pedro Alvarez, guys like that. That was my draft day plan when I took them and since both have been susceptible to injury they were insurance policies for each other. Luckily, both are healthy this year….

That was one helluva list of underachievers you compiled this morning, Flav. I ended up voting for Upton for a couple of reasons. He was coming off that great season. He’s still very young. He hasn’t even reached his prime. And he plays in a great hitters ballpark. Upton sure looked like MVP material. Big disappointment.

And I would have voted for him 10x if he woulda landed on my fantasy team. I had moved Upton up in my pre-draft rankings (partly on your recommendation) to snag him early. Luckily Bautista fell into my lap thanks to Matt Cain getting drafted in the 1st round.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 23, 2012 at 8:23 pm

Dennis, you have a good one in my opinion. A very good fielder and he plays heads up baseball, e.g., stole 2 bases in each of his first two games. He was tearing it up in the minors, but they had no where for him to play until recently, when a couple of their infielders went down. By the by, it looks like he will be playing full time too, since Tulo isn’t expected back until the end of August minimum. All in all, a pretty good player in the making . . .

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 23, 2012 at 8:29 pm

I should have said one stolen base in each of his 1st two games. By the way, if Fowler keeps screwing up batting lead off, the kid could move into that spot. Right now, I think he is batting 7th.
