A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

What time is it ? Time to do it again!

Posted in Uncategorized by twinfan1 on October 5, 2012

It seems like we’ve hashed it all out already. Did I see that Arroyo is starting game 2? Lash me, beat me, tell me a what a dummie I am if I’m wrong- but I’m saying that gives the series to the Giants. I’m with Flavor on this- Latos had to be the guy at ATT. Bronson is a perfectly fine 3 or 4-but he’s 0-4 here and Latos just needs to show up to throw zeroes at us (Β  yes, I know he gave up 2 in Game 162 in 2010 ) . I think we win both at home- so who goes in Game 3 then? I think he has to give Tim the shot for the sweep… so without further ado- here’s what I want to see in a few weeks- then I’ll bask my ass off one more time

Regarding the 2 wild card games today, I am really excited about watching the AL game. Yu Darvish is one of the most exciting pitchers in the game–he’s a strike out machine who throws 7 different pitches. S-E-V-E-N. He can get a little wild now and again and he’s not unhittable, but he’s electric and in a 1 game elimination situation I can’t think of a better tv draw than Darvish. The flip side is his opponent, Mr Innings Eater, Joe Saunders. Factor in Texas’ collapse to Oakland and there’s no telling which way this one goes.
I’d like to see Atlanta beat St Louis just because I don’t like St Louis (for all of the reasons any Giant fan doesn’t like St Louis. Fuck you, Jose Oquendo).

Nice thread Twin . . . Latos is toast here, there, or on the moon. Same thing goes for Arroyo. Oh, and veering away from baseball news for a moment – The unemployment rate is down to 7.8% this month. Game, set, match for Obama (unless you want to try some of that delicious Voodoo Economics with that non-waterfall trickle down effect the Republicans have repackaged again this year). πŸ™‚

Last time I saw Braves here left a bad taste in my mouth. Freeman whacked a couple bombs including one over the CF fence and their pen dominated us. I think it’s us vs. them for NL title…STL doesn’t look like much but I thought the same last year. If Wash takes out the O’s, he gets the Yanks again, great theater.
Bronson Arroyo obviously can be had; maybe Baker figures he’ll do better in our yard and that Latos will dominate anywhere and hold down SF road offense. As to the SF rotation, I still think bochy will go with his heart and throw Lincecum in game 3. But the fact that he hasn’t announced it yet makes he think he isn’t comfortable with it; he just isn’t prepared to send TL and his 5.- something ERA to the pen and go with Zito and Vogs, both of whom finished season off better….yet.
Up 2-0? Even 1-1? Lot to think about.

Nice thread, Michael. I’m ready to bask my ass off some more, too! I too am looking forward to the “elimination games” today. I was on the fence with this whole additional WC thing, but as it gets closer and the more I have thought about it, I like it. It rewards the all of the division winners, and whoever wins today will spend one of their top pitching bullets advancing.
I think Tim gets the ball in game 3. Game 4, Zito or Vogey? If an emination game for us, I would suspect Cain on short-rest. Otherwise, my guess is it would be Zito, since Vogey has the better background/make-up to come in from the pen.
    Second season starts today!

That game 3 decision is one of the biggest managerial decision we’ve ever seen Bochy have to make. It’s definitely not an easy decision, and it’s one that will be hugely second-guessed if it doesn’t work out. I say go with Tim and hope for the best. The last game Tim pitched in the playoffs was that stellar game 5 of the World Series. I think you have to hope there is some of that magic left.

Well, this is all I could come up with. I’m fipped, zipped, and warred out. On paper, this is obviously a much tougher match up than Atlanta in 2010, even if the Reds don’t have Foster Brooks….a lot has been made of the Red’s pen but our trio of loogies are tough against lefties- if we have a lead late, Votto and Bruce will have loogie phobia. I’ve said it ever since they got him that Mijares would be a big factor. And that’s even if he doesn’t.pitch.

And in the ‘band-box’ how many Giants fly outs or doubles will have better results?

Ah, beautiful overhead shot. We’ll always have 2010.

Now if G’s are up 2 zip, what about Bochy using Zits/Vogs against Latos, since he’s so dominant against the G’s, and leave Tim and Matt for games 4 & 5? That goes against conventional wisdom that you never concede anything and you go for the sweep, but it’s something I’d consider.
On the other hand, if they are down 2-0 or it’s 1-1, obviously gotta go Tim.

Would guess the key is keeping the Reds from hitting hr’s. They have 172 to the G’s 103, but the G’s have outscored them 715 – 669.

    • Salty's avatar Salty said, on October 5, 2012 at 10:23 am

Of course, that’s assuming Tim is a better choice than either Zits or Vogs. Nothing we’ve seen this year confirms that.

That strategy used to be quite common when there were a lot of double headers. Throw your weaker guy against their ace and hope to steal one. Then put up your Cy Young against Hiram Pladnick in the nite cap.’Course, they’re doing the same thing…

The City is going to be crazy this weekend. Hardly-Strictly kicked-off today, Fleet Week, Giants get it going tomorrow night, Niners on Sunday. I’m heading down for Hardly-Strictly tomorrow morn and Sunday (WE’VE had our hotel room booked for a couple of months).
Tempted to try and pick-up a ticket for tomorrow’s game. Bleacher seats for under a hundy and lower box for a buck and a quarter. Tempting. But, the current plan is to grab some grub (meeting friends who also have a room) and watch the game at the hotel. Going to be a kick-ass weekend!
Just collected on my Niner-Packer bet. Had lunch at a kick-ass restaurant. I tried not to gloat too much (oh, and she’s a Dodger fan to boot)! BOO YAH!

Emmylou Harris is a big fan of the Braves, I guarantee you she’s checking in on this Braves game or watching it somewhere.
And speaking of the Braves….they went with Medlen as the starter. I thought there was a chance they might go with Huddy, but they went with the young phenom.

I don’t think there is anyone anywhere who expected anything close to what he gave us. It deserves to be an even bigger story than what it is- bigger than even Miggy’s triple, and the amazin’ A’s, IMO. 31. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on October 5, 2012 at 5:04 pm

Blown call, IMO. How can the infield fly rule be called on a ball that far into leftfield???

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 5, 2012 at 5:14 pm

The infielder needs to be able to catch it in a reasonable way– and he reasonably was able to catch that, he was camped right under it. I don’t think there’s anything in there about where it has to be in relation to the infield.

I was listening to that on the radio, just got home and saw it on tv. The Braves got robbed, the umpire didn’t make the IF Fly call until the ball was about 50 feet from the infielder. THat’s a joke, that call has to get made immediately.

  35. eddacker's avatar eddacker said, on October 5, 2012 at 5:37 pm

I do believe the ump called it on intention? He read something in the body language or the on-field chatter. And then shot his arm up to say, “oh no you don’t.”

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 5, 2012 at 5:41 pm

He threw his arm up too late. You have to make that call immediately to give the base runners a chance to react. Growing up, we just listened to an umpire call IF Fly but I would think that in a huge stadium you’re just looking for the ump to raise an arm. And that was just way, way too late.
I understand it’s a judgement call that can’t be even looked at by a protest but is it really a judgement call? To me, it’s concretely clear that the ump didn’t display the out sign early enough. That should be what is protested.

    The situation was this:
With two on and one out in the eighth, reliever Mitchell Boggs got Simmons to pop up to short left field. Shortstop Pete Kozma went out, called off Holliday but then hesitated and did not make the catch. The misplay loaded the bases for Atlanta. Or so the Braves thought.

Left-field umpire Sam Holbrook had surprisingly signaled for an infield fly, meaning that, by rule, the batter was ruled out. Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez vehemently argued the call, and a 19-minute delay followed to clean up beer bottles and other items thrown onto the field by upset fans. Play resumed under protest by the Braves,

they’re what are preferred in the dead of night. In a cave. Sans Raccoon’s. When Berger is trying to secure order during a skype-a-shot with Edd in England…….

Blade, I am hitting the gym tomorrow. Time is a little unknown but probably 8:30 or 9. I have a soccer game to coach at 11:30. Sunday is a run and Monday is the gym and I’m not working that day so if that is more convenient then let’s do it. Let me know.

Well, do love for Stl, but won’t miss the tomachop bullshit or whatever they call it in Atl. In fact, eliminate all red states, especially the idiots in Texas and I’ll be happy. Go Blue, Go Obama, FUCK YOU ROMNEY.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman would have made a better Buck Showalter than Art Howe.

Guess I won’t be making another trek to DFW for a Giants-Rangers World Series.

Well, The Rangers completed one of the more epic melt downs of our time (in terms of baseball). Washington is revered by most but I have never bought into it, he’s nothing more than a *player’s manager*. There is a lot more going on in terms of what buttons to push…….
Hey, I have to write a thread tomorrow about the NL individual awards to stay in good standing with the BBA. I don’t give a shit if you respond to it or not, it’s just a thing I have to post and then email the BBA President to *prove* I’ve done my duty.
That’ll happen early, maybe even right now if I decide to do it before I go to bed. But Pawlie is going to post right after me, we already discussed it.

Well, I discussed Ron’s managing, as did many of us, during the 2010 series. but being a player’s manager is a compliment, not a negative. Of course he has to have some tactical skills but I didn’t see or hear of much that he blew in that regard as they lost their lead. I’d put it more on the A’s great finish than a meltdown, at least where the manager was responsible. But I understand Craig’s view.Good night all.
