A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Citizen Cain

Posted in Uncategorized by tedspe on October 11, 2012

What a confidence building game yesterday.

Not for the Giants, for me.

I’ll keep this fairly short. The only minor complaint was Zito. Man, 2 and 2/3 innings??!! Not a surprise just a complaint. And *still* the Giants keep up the uncanny “Zito Win Streak” (cue the TWILIGHT ZONE theme).

And did I does or does I didn’t ask youse all to stop talking smack about Lincecum? I believe I does. Just as I earlier asked ya’ll SHHAADDUPP!!! On Pablo Sandoval!!!

And what’s with Pagan? I mean, I always liked him but he sure flexes his All-Star plays in a timely manner. Who the fuck does he think he is? A more talented Cody Ross? And the whole offense after 3 games. Looks like the ex-lax finally kicked in. I’m not sure giving Posey the proverbial 1st base “day off” did anyone any good but at least it didn’t backfire.

Now–Men and ferrett– all this stuff you’ve heard about Giants not wanting to fight, wanting to stay out of the further post season, is a lot of horse dung. Giants traditionally love to fight. All real Giants love the sting of battle. When you were kids, you all admired the champion marble shooter, the fastest runner, big league ball players, the toughest boxers. Giants fans love a winner and will only reluctantly tolerate a loser. The Giants play to win all the time. I wouldn’t give a hoot in hell for a man who lost and laughed. That’s why The Giants have never really lost, and will never really lose a playoff series… because the very thought of losing is hateful to The Giants!!!!

Not saying it *can’t* happen cuz baseball is baseball. But the never say never attitude is so prevelant–it practically reeks.

That’s right, reeks…reeks? Wait a minute. I think I’m melting cheese in the oven. Hold on….

Okay, breakfast is ready. Anyway–CAIN vs. Lactose Intolerant

Flappers. Giants. All the way!!!

SEMPER FAI, MOTHERFUCKERS!!!!! HOOO-WAHHHHH!!!!

Too many heroes in this one. Crawfish with the triple and the diving stab. Pagan with the run saving catch. Loved the freeze-out of Buster after the game. “Can I get some love?”

Unfuckingbelievable. I think this was just as incredible as the WS win. Seeing they were down to their last inning 3 games ago.

On the other hand, if we’ve learned anything about Bochy and this team it is that they bounce back well from adversity, they are road warriors, and they ALWAYS clich series wins away from home . . .

Hey, now that the Gyros ha’ve gotten to the game #5, that was such a big IF Sunday night past, I want them to win the damn thing. I mean, kick Latos’ ass. It’s time to get greedy, none of this “glad we were here” stuff. It was time to be reticent and hopeful and deferential in game #3, and a little less in today’s game, but now, no more. The pressure is on Cincy. Just like it was on Texas when the A’s swept ‘em at the end of the season. Yep, SF has proved that they’re worthy of going on, so let’s seal the deal and actually move onto the next round. I WILL be pissed if they lose tomorrow, so should everybody else here. Like I said in the 2010 playoffs, I’m bringing this back — Why the Fuck NOT the Giants?!!…

Yeah, this series belongs to everyone on the roster. I’ll even give Zito props for not giving up too many runs when he pitched his 2.2 innings. It just gave Timmy his chance to shine.

I couldn’t be any prouder of this team. And team is the term for these guys. They are coming close to out 2010ing the 2010 team. Pence’s game 3 speech and pregame huddle yesterday is something that really is outside the realm of anything resembling baseball and how these guys usually go about things. Football? Sure. But his “I want to keep playing with these guys” speech is truly what the team concept is all about. Sure, he’s awkward, random, and gangly. but I love the dude now.

Regardless of what happens in Washington, it would be cool if they could at least win a game at home there.

We went DC last October and drove by the stadium. Was their last playoff win at home in 1933? Did I hear that right?

Funny thing is, Cincy hasn’t won a playoff game in their new stadium in 2 tries. I think

  35. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on October 11, 2012 at 3:54 pm

There was a discussion about which and how many pitchers will be carried for the NLCS- to be clear, I’m saying what I think they should do, not what I neccessarily think they *will* do.Now that it’s a done deal that they’re getting there, the rotation, in order should be Vogie,Timmy, Cain, MadBum. This gives Vogelsong 1 and 5, Tim 2 and 6, Cain 3 and 7, MadBum 4.As to Tim- there is zero way on this planet or any other that a confirmed big game pitcher, 2 time CY is not in the rotation after his performance in the NLDS.The notion of him as the new Mota is too fucking ridiculous to even contemplate.
The other pitchers should be Mota, Kontos, Mijares, Affeldt , Lopez, Casilla, Romo.
The reserves should be Huff, Nady, Arias, Theriot, Sanchez, Burriss.
Leaving Zito off would be tough for Bochy but we won in 2010 and are where we are this year because he can make tough decisions. One caveat: would or should Bochy move MadBum to the pen and give Zito one start in Game 4?

    • ChiPower's avatar ChiPower said, on October 11, 2012 at 9:49 pm

Michael – I totally respect your opinion…I have learned much about the game from you. But I respectfully disagree. I both thin what they should do, and what they will do is carry 12. Drop Huff from the reserves and I am with you. Burriss gets in on his speed and his ability to play so many positions.

No shit, Snarkk. The A’s stave off elimination in the bottom of the 9th and live to fight another night. They HAVE to be pumped by what the Giants did today. The Nats and their $120 million injured guy win in the bottom of the 9th to live to fight one more day, Raul fucking Ibanez hits a game tying and game winning HR off the bench (for A-Rod, no less). THEN you got the Giants winning 3 on the road after losing the first 2 at home.

Unreal. Go Baltimore! I would love to see a Balt/Giants WS.

  48. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on October 11, 2012 at 4:45 pm

Not using Chapman for 2 innings in game 3 was the true killier. There was no guarantee he’d ever get another chance to use him in a save or win situation. You don’t worry about tomorrow in an elimination game or in a potential clincher. Bochy pounces in those situations and that’s what has to be done.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on October 11, 2012 at 4:47 pm

Love the understatement Chuck . . . If I recall that TV graphic correctly, he is sporting an ERA waaaaaay north of 5 when he faces us. The only saving grace is that there is some (unknown to me) MLB team that hits him even better than we do.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 11, 2012 at 5:14 pm

Dusty said in the post-game 3 presser that he had not used Chapman for a second inning all year, and he wasn’t going to start now. I think it was a reasonable thing, especially considering the kid’s injury not too long ago. I think that was one of the more defensible things Dusty did in the series. Leaving Latos in today to face Buster was less reasonable, when it was obvious Latos was fuming and sputtering…

  49. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 11, 2012 at 4:45 pm

Boo hoo Dusty. My heart does NOT bleed for him.

Baker, is an old-school baseball dinosaur. When he was with the Giants and the Cubs, he always had me scratching my head in regard to having poor on base percentage players at the top of his lineups. In fact, per Wikipedia, he still rejects and argues the on-base percentage statistic, saying that extra baserunners simply “clog up the bases” unless they can run well. Even in Cincy, he frequently used Drew fucking Stubbs in a leadoff role. Give me a frickin’ break.

Couple that with his tendency to overuse pitchers and damage pitchers careers, e.g., Robb Nen, Kerry Wood, Mark Prior and Edinson Volquez, earning him the nickname “Widowmaker.” Less dramatic cases include Shawn Estes, Bill Swift, John Burkett, Mark Leiter, and Kirk Reuter. Wood and Prior suffered serious arm injuries following their first full seasons under Baker. Per Wikipedia, Wood and Prior averaged 122 and 126 pitches per start, respectively, in their final six regular-season starts of 2003.

Thank God he manages the Reds and not us anymore . . .

    • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on October 11, 2012 at 5:35 pm

I won’t go into Dusty’s style as a manager but I will say he is a pretty good guy. Very easy to talk to and his musical tastes are on a par with our own Willied. He also helped a friend of mine get Super Bowl tickets when the Niners played in NOLA. So, I won’t bad mouth the man but I am glad the Reds lost.

I doubt Dusty will be back managing next year. His 2 year contract comes to an end and in 10 postseason games with a chance to win a series, Baker has a 1-9 record. Fairly certain the Reds front office will look at that statistic and have 2nd thoughts. Especially galling to them and Reds’ fans is the fact that statistically, the Reds dominated in this series: They had a .261 team average compared to San Francisco’s .194. The Reds outscored the Giants, 22-18, and had a better staff ERA, 3.13 to 4.11.

    Tough cheese Reds . . . 🙂

Mauer got an eight-year contract extension with the Twins worth $184 million in 2010. The carrot is the additional 2 years and perhaps a promise to switch him over to 1st base after that kid in the minors makes the majors (forgot the phenoms name . . . help me).

To be honest, I have said in the past, that I don’t like Buster as a 1st baseman . . . He is an excellent catcher and is rated in the top tier of MLB catchers . . . As a first baseman, that isn’t the case for reasons of just ok power and defense. He is still growing, so the power might increase and the defense would too if he was given a chance. Anywho, I could be convinced to change my mind on this.

Andrew Susac, out of Oregon State. If he pans out, you could have Hector take over as C, with Susac as a really good defensive backup with decent hitting, Buster at first or third, Belt at first if Buster’s at third, and Pablo might be gone in a trade if he doesn’t sack up and stay in shape…

  64. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on October 11, 2012 at 6:03 pm

Buster should play left field, Pablo third, Sanchez/Jackson Wiliams catcher. Williams is said to be the best defensive catcher in the system and is finally hitting enough to merit being a reserve in the bigs. I’d keep Buster where he is but this problem with some of the pitchers is not acceptable no matter whose fault it is and he has to take throws from the outfield in the same zip code as home plate.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 11, 2012 at 6:09 pm

Zito and Tim won’t be back after 2013, so the problem, whatever that is, they have with Buster will last only one more year. I agree though that he doesn’t take OF throws anywhere near home, which is an issue on occasion. I really do think he will not be the catcher beyond say, end 2014 when he’s what, 27? Too bad, because he’s a potential HOF candidate, IMO, as a catcher. By then, he’ll be in his hitting prime, and he’ll be way too valuable as a hitter to wear out as a catcher…

IMO, Pablo doesn’t move well enough to play OF. But, Buster at 3B may be where he’s headed. I would hat to see Pablo go, he’s got such potential, but he might go if they get fed up with his weight issues…

Panda has a fine case for being the MVP of this series were there there one. The tme for belittling him should be over. He fought through two injuries to be a huge contributer this year.

    • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on October 11, 2012 at 6:42 pm

I wasn’t belittling Pablo, so I hope you weren’t directing that at me. I’m just stating an opinion I’ve had since ST (?). That if the Giants wanted to move Posey then someone had to go. I still think, as I’ve said in the past, that Panda is athletic enough to handle LF. So I’m not sure what’s belittling about that. I do know we need pitching and Atlanta needs a third baseman so that’s where I was coming from.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on October 11, 2012 at 7:43 pm

It wasn’t directed at Bozo- but Panda has been maligned enough and I’ll stand up for him at every opportunity. He’s been one of the top third baseman in baseball-period, We can do numbers if anyone cares for that- but trust me, I’m right.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on October 11, 2012 at 8:00 pm

Posey is who should play LF but what’s troubling is how hard Bochy is pushing how great Buster is at `1B, One-he’s not. Two-they have someone who is. They don’t have to do a damn thing next year to improve the team immensely except stick Buster in left and leave everybody else where they are.

Agreed. Pablo did well at .333 for the series, incl. the close down HR yesterday, tho he had the error today. Posey clearly was the MVP of the series even with his .211 average, with the huge defensive throws in two games, 2 HRs, incl the decisive slam today off Latos. No question about that…

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 11, 2012 at 8:12 pm

Late to the party here, but not really. First I paced in the upstairs bedroom as my wife chose to watch “The Hunger Games” downstairs. Apt choice, honey. When Buster came up w/ the bases loaded, I said to no one except the voices in my head, “Posey has looked almost as bad as Belt on his last 8 to 10 at-bats, BUT, BUT one swing could change that.” When he hit the grand slam, I screamed and whooted (for FerretHead), very very loudly, like a kid, almost turning to tears. I went nuts. Alone. Or, alone with all of you. Correction: I fielded a call from a local Giants fan whom I’ve never met, but we connected because I saw the Giants license plate holder on his son’s car, though I’ve since learned his son is a Yanks fan. (I blogged about this incident earlier this year.) After the GS, my wife downstairs said something like, “Did they win?” I declined a response. When she told me the movie was over and the larger (but modestly small compared to the average American family’s flat screen) TV downstairs now had the game on, I came downstairs, in time to see the Reds bounce back with 2 quick runs. Tension. I stayed downstairs for a few innings, but my wife was moving around, doing things. No good. I said, perhaps uncharitably, “To you it’s background, to me it’s important.” I went back upstairs to the cave, with the very small non-HD, oldish TV with VCR on a bureau. Sometimes I stood up close to it. Or paced. After my wife left around 4 p.m. to go to our daughter’s soccer game, I went back downstairs. Alone. With all of you. Pacing. Texting. Receiving texts. Ignoring texts. The last three innings made me as nervous as I can recall for a Giants game. I flinched, mumbled, squinted, pictured disaster. Maybe the Sunday NLDS game in ’10 against Atlanta was just as tense, but I think not. The ninth was almost unbearable. My doomer self imagined a 7-6 Reds loss. #TORTURE. And afterward, when the victory came on romo’s heroics, I did not scream. I was dazed and drained. The players looked the same, especially Buster Posey. Epic. Almost broke down weeping but held off. Later, seeing Hunter Pence bathed in champagne in the clubhouse, I noticed he was surrounded by a semicircle of teammates as he yelled, a crazed evangelist of Giant hope, declaiming victory like an Old Testament prophet, a Jeremiah. Our benevolent Elmer Gantry (he looks a little like Burt Lancaster). I almost lost it again. I love you all.

Joba Chamberlain get hit in the elbow by a flying bat portion, not a mammalian bat. Hey, I gotta say this, even if covered above. Our pitchers got way more squeezed than the Reds’ pitchers. But how we handled it was the difference. Exhibit A: Latos began to unravel when he did not get a few calls he wanted. Boo-hoo. Exhibit B: Ryan Hanigan’s take was outside but hey, you can’t take that pitch in that situation. Does it have something to do with the name Ryan? (cf. Ryan Howard, 2010). Exhibit C: Sergio Romo really got terribly squeezed on some of those pitches. His attitude? He stayed calm. He got his first postseason save. We thank him. #stunnedanddazed
