A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Working A Swim Meet Today with a “LeMaster”

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 8, 2013

This morning we had a practice swim meet to try out the *new* technology. The timers don’t use timers anymore, we use these blue boxes that we are supposed to press ONLY when the swimmer hits the wall—the result goes right to the computer (or whatever we’re sending it too. A cloud? I can’t keep track). Anyway, this new gizmo has done away with the details of timing a race. Instead of clicking start-stop and then turning to a human recorder all we do is click stop once, when they hit the wall, and our job is done. With no more recorders hanging over my head awaiting my time, it’s already better. I never liked that, it felt like they were always just looming, waiting to consequence or doubt me…..

There are 2 timers for each lane, my lane was #5.  I turned to the woman I was working with to start up the required mindless bull-chat that you always have to do since you’re sitting there together for 3 hours or so. She was older and unattractive and I was bummed since I often get paired with a nice looking MILF who likes to flirt and remember her better days. But whatever, I can get my bull-chat on with anyone so I looked at her name tag and it said “LeMaster”. I thought “Booyah, that’s a built-in conversation starter!”  Then I started thinking that I’m not working “booyah” into my daily venacular often enough and I wondered how I could change that.  Sensing the need to interrupt this brain cloud moment, I shook my head twice, re-focused, and said “You know, you’ve got a fairly famous last name for this area if you’re a Giants fan.”  I’m bad at guessing ages of older women but I put her in the neighborhood of 60 and was hoping this was Johnnie’s sister or wife or something. What a fantastic story this would be for The Flap!

“Yes, I get that a lot” she said. “I’m married to one of his cousins but I’ve never met him”.

Buzz kill…….

She prattled on about how he was a *great* defensive player but couldn’t hit, how he used to wear “Boo” ALL the time on his jersey (I just let her keep going without correcting that one) and how her son could have played college ball but he quit after high school because he wasn’t passionate enough to take it to the next level…she said other things, I started ruminating to myself about how I’m still not saying “Booyah” enough to verbalize exclamation points in conversation, then the meet started and I had to start clicking that timer-stop button over and over for 3 hours……

So, all in all, kind of a let down, at least in terms of the rad post I had planned about timing a swim meet with Johnnie LeMaster’s wife….

Pawlie left me a voice mail today saying that last night’s loss was devastating to him and that he was taking a few days break from the blog. I was surprised, I didn’t think last night’s loss was that awful. One of the best hitters in the NL took one of our pitchers deep. He was 0-5 against him, I had no problem with Bochy sticking with him. He threw him a poorly placed strike, he knocked it out, we only scored one run, end of game. To me, this was just another game where we didn’t hit and they beat us late. Stay with us Kokonuts, they get a lot worse than that one!

Here’s a great pic that I’ve posted before. This is what players looked like before they took steroids. I bet one or two of you were at this game or knew someone who was.

To be fair to ole Johnny Lee (and me and my buddies weren’t, to us he was Redneck Disaster), good field no hit SS were all around the league, usually batting 8th. Check out what Ozzie Smith hit for the Padres before he went to STL and got to slap hits on that turf. Jose Uribe wasn’t much with the stick either, tho he did have one season I think when he went .290-ish. Ray Oyler of the Tigers WS team hit .171 or something

Entertaining post, BF; although I’m not as big a fan of “Booyah” as you are. I think “Booyah” is destined to fade into history, in the same way that “Gadzooks” did a couple of generations ago.

I was not high on Pence after the way he hit here last year, but he hustles his butt off and is having a solid season so far. He and Andres got SF those runs with pure effort, sandwiched around nice shots by Sando (back to hitting the ball hard again) and Crawford.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 8, 2013 at 7:51 pm

Unless they said something beteen innings, K and K never even mentioned Vungo’s effort. Andres has been a nice pick up thus far.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 8, 2013 at 8:06 pm

Agreed, which makes me wonder how SF is going to be able to work any call up OF in much. I would be surprised any of them could give the team more than Blanco or Torres; until Pagan gets back maybe Perez could get a start a week, but after that?
This isn’t the Royals, the Giants are after another ring and get everyone’s attention and best effort when they come to town.

Zumie, regarding the Puig comment above, I was right (had to look it up):
From Elias: Yasiel Puig homered for the fourth time in his five games in the major leagues when he hit a solo shot in the sixth in that accounted for the Dodgers’ first run in their 2-1 win over the Braves in ten innings. Puig is the second player in modern major-league history (i.e., since 1900) to hit four home runs in his first five big-league games; Mike Jacobs did that with the Mets in 2005. Puig’s homers have been been of every variety: one solo, one two-run, one three-run and one grand slam. He’s the first Dodgers player to hit one of each with his first four major-league home runs since Frank Howard (1958 to 1960).

And I’d be totally fine if Puig turned into Mike Jacobs! 🙂 🙂 🙂

Pic of Boo Lemaster also shows the late Gary Carter, ex Expo, Met (member of the ’86 champs) and Giant, maybe some others? Pretty decent defensively, excellent offensive catcher, HOFer. Died way too young a coupla years back of brain cancer. I listened to the game off and on tonight, during a languid dinner out on our deck in the warmth of a NorCal evening. Kind of fit the somewhat languid game and the bottle of Vouvray that Mrs. Snarkk and I polished off. The neighbor dog sauntered in through a hole in our fence, she and our Mutt had a friendly competition of who could beg the best for the grilled chicken scraps. Like the GMen, they both won. Then the neighbor mutt sauntered back through the fence hole back to her home as dusk settled into night…

Saw some highlights — Torres misplay in left is another head scratcher. Rather easy running catch to his left on a liner, then he just flinches and the ball passes by his glove thigh high. His defense is concerning, that was not a hard play…

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 9, 2013 at 9:08 am

Everything you describe and the commentary from two non-Torres admirers on the telly suppoprt that probably he lost it in the lights. He also had a sac fly, a walk, and a fantastic slide.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 9, 2013 at 10:55 am

Why is it that Blanco in LF seems not to lose these liners in the lights or the sun, or misplay singles? I’ll give you Torres is better offensively than I expected he would so far, but his defensive lapses are too many to ignore or excuse on fairly routine plays for major league OFers, especially for broadcasters…

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 9, 2013 at 11:59 am

I’ve never said he hasn’t had some problems. in LF. But last night it seemed he lost it in the lights. And that *does* happen to everybody. But the defensive problems would be at least minimized by playing Pagan in LF and platooning CF where Blanco and Torres ( and probably Perez ) are both better than Angel, who has reverted defensively to his 2011 performance.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 9, 2013 at 1:43 pm

I agree both are better in CF defensively than Pagan. But, Pagan is getting the big cheese, and that’s where he’s playing for the foreseeable future, apparently…

Baggs in his game story brings up an interesting point–Ramirez was awful yesterday, and awfully lucky Montero shot stayed in the yard. As he mentions, isn’t it about Hembree time? Seems like perfect scenario with Casilla down–bring him in as RHP set up guy 7th-8th, maybe better suited to start an inning.

  51. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on June 9, 2013 at 9:28 am

In fantasy league, they have a tactical move called “streaming,” where you pick up a probable starter for that day’s games off of the FL waiver wire (or the next day) and then drop him after his start, unless he is really, really good. I was thinking that the Giants would win yesterday, but it would also be a low scoring game due to the Giants difficulty of scoring runs lately.

Stupid, stupid me to pick up Cahill yesterday – In just 3.2 innings he gave up eight runs on nine hits while striking out three. I gave up 3 points yesterday in the Flap league and more important, a good chance of being in 3rd place, by doing this numbskull move. Never, ever attempt to parlay your bet against the Giants . . . You will pay for it more times than not. 🙂

Anywho, I am glad the Gmen won, so that’s the main thing.

I’m interested to see the kid Skaggs pitch for AZ today. I was in Reno several weeks back and I saw him pitch a minor league game. The program said he was the D-backs #1 prospect and he is a big lefty that throws hard and has some nice breaking stuff. Kind of reminded me of Steve Avery. Funny thing though, he got absolutely bombed that night by Jemile Weeks, Darric Barton, and the rest of the A’s AAA team.

Anyone remember the game at the Stick where Avery hit a homer, but the ump was deceived by the chain-link fence and called it a ground rule double—thinking it bounced over!? Replays cleary showed it went over, but on first glance you couldn’t easily tell. The Stick was something else. God, I loved that place.

Today’s Puig notes, for no particular reason, just for the heck of it:
last night he made a throw to third to nail the runner that reminded people of Roberto Clemente; and then later in the game he made an ill-advised head-first slide into firstbase on an infield hit. He landed clumsily and could have badly injured himself. If he’d gotten injured, he would have been some kind of bizarre one-week wonder.
Bruce Jenkins, on Lurie’s show this morning, said that “Puig has awakened the whole Dodger team.” I don’t know about that. The rest of that Dodger team still looks pretty slumbering to me. There just isn’t much of a “team” to the Dodgers. Still a collection of individuals.

I was curious how many games Avery won in his career. My prediction was 74, but he actually won 96. He also hit 4 homers, which I was glad to see. I would have felt bad for the guy if his stats showed he had never hit one when he got robbed of one at Candlestick.
Gotta admit I’m pretty geeked for Post #1000.

“I could see Baggarly moving from writing about baseball to a more highlighted role as a TV guy somewhere”

Snarkk, he’s on Comcast regularly, if that counts, which maybe it shouldn’t. (grin)

Heck of a play by Pennington.

Didi Gregorious also played in that AAA game I attended. Very cool name. Almost up there in Bake McBride territory in my book.

What fucking catch by Perez, full tilt into the wall.

If he can hit like Harper, too, we may have something…great catch, but geez, we want you alive, Juan…

    Perez does have wheels.

Good recovery for Gaudin after he made his own FUp. The guy’s showing some tenacity…

Flavor mentioned Perez’s interview with M. Lurie back in ST. I heard that, too, and hoped to see him on the team this year, maybe in Sept. Nice early introduction. The way he stopped that deep drive with his glove and then worked the leather to get the ball securely into the web before he hit the wall was beautiful. He’s not afraid to swing the bat, either. Could be a good shot in the arm if Pablo’s foot keeps him on the bench for a while.

Agreed. I’m looking forward to seeing this kid play on the big club.

He hit the wall full bore. Similar to how Lyman Bostock hit it Oakland years ago. Lyman wasn’t as lucky (then ), he broke several bones..But you can see why I have been asking for Juan…

Scoots is hitting .330. I’d say his back is fine–and this is one multi year deal that doesn’t look to blow up in Sabean’s face……
Puig can’t save the Dodgers. And Jenkins is totally wrong, I agree with Zummie, the Dodgers are stuck in a deep slumber. Jumping around in the dugout after Puig homers doesn’t mean shit if they keep sleep walking through at bats.
And now we hear that Kemp has had another set back and Dumb Ass Eye Goggle Boy is headed back to the DL?
    Fantastic……..

Most folks who have seen a lot of baseball know that Puig has a ways to go to live up to the hype. He’s a great PROSPECT still. But I’ll look forward to the daily updates.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a balk call where a runner was actually deceived. Maybe once. Usually nobody has a clue what happened, except the ump. I’m on radio now, and Flemm basically said it was bogus. Anybody see it?…

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on June 9, 2013 at 2:53 pm

I’d agree with Krukow: “It was a ticky-tacky call.” He came to a stop for .8 seconds instead of one second.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 9, 2013 at 2:57 pm

Also, pitchers often don’t come to a complete stop.
Casilla balks every pitch if they called that dumb ass balk to the letter of the rule

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on June 9, 2013 at 3:03 pm

And the umps allow Mike Adams several little stops in a move that doesn’t seem according to the rules.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 9, 2013 at 3:46 pm

All umps have their piccadilloes, the balk call may have ticky-tacky but it was a balk.
