A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Looking at WAR Unlike The Way Bill James Might Look at It

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 25, 2014

WAR is one of those stats I observe but don’t really use to evaluate a player. For starters, it factors in defense and that’s not really on my radar when it comes to building daily fantasy teams. Secondly, I don’t understand how to calculate it and that’s another reason I’m probably cooled to it. Thirdly, what I do know about it I don’t like since I think it emphasizes defense too heavily and I think the sabermetric community has a LONG way to go when it comes to perfecting defensive metrics.

As I drove into work this morning, I was thinking about Pagan and his obvious impact on the team (both when he plays and when he doesn’t). Is there a player out there who defines “replacement player” better than Gregor Blanco? I decided to look up their WAR numbers and see how they compare. For those of you who know nothing about WAR, consider this: The WAR number tries to quantify how many wins a player is worth to his team when compared to a replacement player (ie, someone from the bench or the minor leagues).

In 2013, Blanco’s WAR was 2.8. Pagan’s was 1.3. In 2014, Blanco’s WAR is 0.4, Pagan’s in 1.7.

And then I looked at the wild splits the Giants have the last 2 years with Pagan in the line up and without him in the line up. And that’s actually a lie, I didn’t look it up. But I know the Giants are like 20 games over .500 with him in the LU, and significantly under .500 when he’s not in the line up.

So I’m gonna take the liberty and adjust Pagan’s WAR from it’s current 1.7 and bump it up to like 40.6. Sound good?

Imagine if the great WAR machine Mike Trout went down and he was replaced by a healthy Angel Pagan. Would that team go into the tank?

Just another way to look at it.

Well, according to Baggs, the Giants will make a roster move today, and it sounds like the move will be one of three:

Gary Brown (give Blanco a breather as he has nose-dived over the last few games), Adam Duvall (put him at 1st and move Morse back to the OF), or bring up a 13th pitcher.

Personally, I want to see what Duvall can do with the big club over a couple of weeks. Put him and Panik out there regularly over the next few weeks and see what they have.

I agree, Duvall is the best choice IMO. It might be Brown but he’s just Perez-Lite.

Also, not sure it has been shared, but Scoots went 0-2 in a rehab game for the rookie league team last night (played 3 innings in the field). If/when he is brought back, they will have to make a move to clear a spot for him on the 40 man roster.

Looks like Pagan’s heading for the DL. Over a week till Belt’s return. Who gets the call? It’s a short-termer so why not Mark Minicozzi. 31 Y.0. or so. Been hitting the snot out of the ball in AA and AAA. This would be his dream of a lifetime. Could he be a rabbit’s foot?

I saw Minicozzi in ST, Stick. Nice glove in the field. Certainly a feel-good story, but even if it is for a short while, I would like to see Duval. If they go with a pitcher, it will be interesting to see who gets the call. Escobar is consistently talked-about as the farthest along towards a move, but he has struggled this year (3-6 with a 5.31 ERA).

In 2013 we got a big dose of Blanco starting. No one wants to see that again.
Piecing the 2014 season back together again after losing Pagan for who-knows-how-long will be a challenge. It can’t just be a coincidence that the two seasons fell apart when he went down with injury.
The one positive thing that can come out of losses is the freedom it gives teams to make changes. The 2014 Giants are in total free-fall. Sabean and Bochy have total freedom to make whatever changes they want, if they so choose. And there’s no reason to concede the season as a “bad penny” year. The Giants are still a firstplace team even though it doesn’t feel that way at the moment. The Giants can get out of this funk and resume a really cool 2014.

Chi, in a brief spot on csnbayarea Baggs mentioned Giants prospects that are struggling a bit, including Escobar, Crick, Susac (multiple injuries including concussion) and Law who might need TJ. Um, this can’t thrill those looking to trade guys like Price and Samardzija.
Snarkk has mentioned a couple things I am in with, such as Blanco hitting the ball on the ground which I watched him do to beat out one to SS Monday night. And, I’d like to see Bochy get another bat to replace Pagan if and when he finally goes on DL. Watching Hicks K, again, at the end last night, is just painful.

Giants are gonna be busy all week and only 1 day off til break…so they have plenty opps to snap out of this.

Reading the book on minors there are different types of mgr. Some are button down guys (ala Showalter) with Tolstoy size club rule book and others who have a ping pong table outside their office. I think Bochy low key style, where he can be flexible enough to accommodate wide variances in personality types, ultimately works best. As he said, Huff in a rally thong isn’t easy on the eyes.

In Blanco’s blog http://gregorblanco.mlblogs.com/ he says “In batting practice, I really focus on hitting only low line drives and ground balls. I’m getting better every time. In my last BP, I hit only one fly ball. That’s going to help me. It shows in the game.”
It sounds like he knows what he has to do, he just doesn’t execute it consistently.

Look at this year. Pagan has played more and his WAR is 1.7 compared to Blanco’s .04. And Angel’s Offensive WAR is 10.0, Blanco minus 1.4.

“Tolstoy size rule book”—that’s hilarious. I prefer your ping-pong table type managers myself.

Hey Willie—might Aaron Gordon end up a Sactown King tomorrow? I’d be down with that. Who would you be looking for if you were the Kings holding the #8 pick? Any other NBA draftnicks out there with suggestions for the Kings pick?

Thanks BF for the WAR explanation. Seriously, I’m not up on all those new stats, so that was good for me.

Maybe Timmy can dial up the old magic today. We could sure use it.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 25, 2014 at 9:22 am

I dunno Sac too well, but Kings definitely need more depth, more good players. Gordon will bring tough D and rebounding mentality to help Cousins. You can always use more shooters (Patty Mills type), and maybe a credible backup for Thomas.
And yea, being flexible enough to let everyone be themselves (warts and all) works best for me too.

      • Chipower9's avatar Chipower9 said, on June 25, 2014 at 9:54 am

I haven’t followed the Kings much of late. Just got so disenfranchised with them when the Magoofs were driving the club into the ground and trying to sell to interests who only wanted to relocate the team. I have seen enough of them that I think what they really need is a PF who is not afraid to bang (to help Cousins, as you mentioned), and a PG. Paddy Mills would be sweet. He is an unrestricted FA, and will probably get paid handsomely by someone. Would love to see him in a Dubs uni.

  9. willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 25, 2014 at 9:17 am

Lost in all this too is any credit given to opposing teams regardless of their record. A week ago Sox were hitting 2 and 3 run HRs off Cain and Hudson, something Giants couldn’t match. Pads did all they needed last 2 nights with mostly well timed and placed singles and took advantage of walks and Giants miscues in the field. Pads also played pretty well defensively and made diving snags to snuff out potential rallies.

Something else from minors book–a candid pitcher who was called up for a few days remarked that he knew he didn’t quite belong yet. His take was that even the crummiest ml hitters could rake AAA pitching (think Pill and Velez in PCL), and that the best ones destroy it. So it’s not necessarily a fluke that Pads and their LU full of .220 hitters can dispatch a Hudson when he makes dreaded *location mistakes*.

    • Chipower9's avatar Chipower9 said, on June 25, 2014 at 9:57 am

Yeah, you have to give some credit to the other teams, but seriously, to give up runs the way the Giants did to the Padres who were the worst hitting club in MLB…well, that is just sad. There are many areas of the team that is scuffling right now, but to me, the most important one that needs to be tightened up pronto is the SP.

It would be one thing if they had a Trout or Puig to light a fire, but to be throwing Brown or Duvall or Panik is like Kieschnick Bowker gang redux. They *might* have a good game but seriously, long term not the answer. And auditioning them now sems like the worst time. The 2-5 guys need to pick it up.

But what about the Starting P? BIG problem. And they are paying all that money–which makes it hard to see them backing up the truck for help.

I don’t see any of these newbies sticking around here, except Panik possibly. Second base was the black hole, all the other positions are scuffling or in the case of Pagan, heading for the DL. In short, Duval will be here until Pagan gets back and then the likelihood is he goes back down. As Salty alluded to, we are in frickin’ 1st place by 3 games. LA hasn’t been any great shakes this season, e.g., look at their losing home record. The rest of the division sucks as well. Still no need to panic or think we are in a “bad penny” year as Zum said. If we maintain 1st or 2nd, I fully expect Sabes to make a run at Price, Samaracallmesam, Murphy or some other vet(s) before the trade deadline. Relying on the minors is NOT in the cards this season. Book it.

I read where Bochy says he will use Duvall predominantly off the bench, mixing it up with a few starts (at 1B) which will put Morse back in the OF.

Why the fuck not just play Duvall for most of the starts between now and when Pagan comes back. I mean really, let’s give the kid a shot to see what he really has (or doesn’t). This shit of bringing up a top prospect only to let them mainly ride the pine is BS.

I am probably wrong but it seems like Posey has spent a lot of time at 1st base since Belt went down. I don’t know if that is because of his back or what, but it seems like Morse one night and then Posey the next. I think over the next two weeks Duval should get to play every day. He is probably going back down once Belt is ready anyway. So why not play him.

If I were the Kings, the last thing I need is Aaron Gordon. They have drafted prospect after prospect after prospect. Instead, I would do everything I could do to trade for Rondo and then build around Rondo. But I see that Kings with $19 mill now going to Rudy Gay (wtf?) are already pushing on the salary cap. SOo only way to add Rondo is to deal Cousins, which may be worth getting rid of a headache even though he has tremendous talent.

Would the Celtics want to build around Cousins? I don’t know. Sac town could get Olynk back as a serviceable center for now. But would probably take Cousins and the first round pick and probably a future #1 to get Rondo and Olynk. Then Gay’s contract is up in 2015, so you have that $19 mill then to spend on keeping Rondo and then another $19 million more to build a roster around him. The option to keep Derrick Williams will also be up next year, so this will be a year to test if he is worth it. I could see Gordon in a Celtics uniform with Cousins and Jefff Green as the future…

    • Chipower9's avatar Chipower9 said, on June 25, 2014 at 1:41 pm

Agree with Chi. You’re going by 2 seasons ago GH. I had Cousins on my FL team, so I followed him carefully. He was a saint this season compared to past seasons. More important, the dude is the BEST center, not named Duncan (and maybe even better because of the minutes he plays vs. Duncan). Same deal with Gay – Gay was outstanding this season, as his FG percentage was excellent . . . In past seasons, he sucked. In short, he complimented the other 4 players in Sac. They have a great team and need assistance with defense, thus their possible pursuit of Josh Smith (not certain I am sold on that yet). If Smith does come over, it is quite possible Rondo follows due to his friendship with Smith.
