A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Morse Can Do Whatever He Wants

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 6, 2014

Morse is catching some sh!t on the internet for his over-celebrating tie-making home run but I thought it was awesome. Talk about a month’s worth of frustration coming out in one swing. It’s so awesome when a baseball moment like that bubbles up out of no where.

And what’s up with Belt only hitting one bomb? I clearly said “one or two” in my thread yesterday. That bastard owes me another one today. 🙂

If you missed it, go read Pawlie’s post from last night about meeting Andres Torres. Just awesome stuff.

Timmy could do wonders with a dominant effort again today. More proof he’s turned a corner and give them some mo going into a tough series with the A’s.

Back in Eleven following Creepy Cousins takeout of Buster the team busted its collective ass to try and make up for the lost offense and leadership ~ to no avail as we all remember all so bitterly. Immediate results rather similar to the Posey situation three years back was the tear the team went into on Belt going down with the busted thumb. Injury not nearly so serious or long term. The proof was in the pudding yesterday. Lacking both the Pagan sparkplug and the clutch blasts from Belt the team went into that collective tailspin. Hudson, Blanco and Morse were the first ones to pick up on the changed vibe with the return of BB9.

Should Timmy continue his masterful ways vs SD today he might just get sufficient offensive backing to pull off a feat almost as rare as his second No-No ~ back to back Giants victories.

Great story from Pawlie and a nice win yesterday. Love the Righetti clip on the 4th. Pretty cool when you have to go through Wade Boggs as the last out of a no-hitter. I’m with my parents up in Redding. Out of touch and darn near off the grid is about right. Starting the drive home today and am timing it to coincide with Giants game on the radio. Paul is Asia summer flu story was also awesome.

    * One of the Padres announcers on The Beast’s exuberance:”I didn’t realize it was October”
Tell the Padres, it’s only a rumor to them.
    *Maybe a guy who can help, soon: Erik Cordier, last 10…..12.1 IP 3 H 0 R 3 BB 17 K
Another power arm would be very welcome.
*Really enjoyed yesterday’s game despite a *shocking* dearth of bunting
*Belt’s HR routine is so cool-it’s even better than Kuip’s HR call. A *drop* of the bat, a *quick* peek at the drive, an all business trot.
*Pawlie’s Torres meeting- “it’s a bless”. Great post. BTW, it’s “Yungo” , he corrected the media a couple years ago. Hitting .364 at Pawtucket . Bosox could have a new outfield soon.
    * Recorded the July 4th stinker. Pretty amazing how the gist of a 2-0 loss can be captured in a 3 minute fast forward
    * Did you catch the anthem from the Marine woman? She’s now in the brig.
    * Happy 4th weekend. I kinda burned my weinies -or is wienies? The ones you put on a bun..

Great comeback win. As for internet doofs pounding Morse for celebrating, just go away. I’ve always said real emotion is the great part of sports. He wasn’t showing up the Pads, he was genuinely pumped. Baseball is a great game, but has always been overly curmudgeonly when it comes to showing real emotion. The NFL promotes guys showing fake emotion in the endzone — to a point…

  9. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 6, 2014 at 11:45 am

I didn’t see the comeback, but heard about the Romo near disaster. Lurie is talking this morning that he feels Romo should only be going against RHBs now. With Machi looking loopy, the Pen suddenly looks vulnerable. Not sure if there’s anybody in Fresno that could be waiting in the wings…

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 6, 2014 at 12:09 pm

Maybe Cordier, he’s starting to get up there in age and his time looks to be this year or next. See my first post for his last ten. Been a wild man but seems to be taming it somewhat. 100 MPH gas is not to be dismissed.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 6, 2014 at 12:20 pm

I disagree about Romo. He was saved on a grounder that Craw vacuumed (but still it was a grounder) and Morse made an easy, softly hit pop up look more difficult then it actually was. I am not saying Romo gets his job back, but as I pointed out the other day, bad luck (e.g., Pagan gaffe for example that went for an inside the park HR) has played a part as well. Sergio still has the 3rd best baa at .213 and WHIP of 1.02 . . . Casilla has been better, so he should continue to close. However, I’m thankful that Romo is available should Casilla falter.

I commented on yesterday’s thread about Pawlie’s post – I read it late last night and I had a melancholy/sad feeling for Torres, where tears came to my eyes. I hope he gets another shot at the show and he does well. Again, great story Pawlie. Just my take Pawlie, but there is a book here . . . Specifically, I think you should follow up with Andres and tell him who you are, then propose a book about him and his travails since being on the Giants. The whole minor league experience is fascinating (as Willie touched on a bit) . . . Yet, Andres seems to have made the most of it. Not saying this is an accurate assessment. Who knows? He could be miserable down in the minors. I have no idea. However, I do think there is a wonderful story (book) here and YOU are probably the ONLY one who could write it. Not just saying this to inflate your tires. I mean it.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 6, 2014 at 12:31 pm

Steve, Andres was signed to a minor league contract because the Bosox outfield has been horrible. He started out slowly in Low-A but they must have liked something because they promoted him to AAA where he’s been hitting well with nice pop. They seem to be treating it almost like a rehab stint. I’d think he’s psyched.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 6, 2014 at 12:38 pm

Well, I wish him the best. Pawlie’s “take” of him being a humble and considerate guy is what I’ve read about him. I hope he is playing with the Red Sox in the 2nd half. They are known for giving second chances, e.g., Grady Sizemore. Moreover, their outfield needs assistance with Bradley floundering a bit and the other rookie Betts just getting his feet wet.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 6, 2014 at 12:31 pm

Yeah agreed, Torres would make a fantastic story. First time I warmed to the guy was watching him hit a PH HR over the CF fence at ATT and touching them all in record time. Cool player, I thought at the time.
Reading about AAA, so many of the guys Feinstein follows have been bedeviled by injuries, mis diagnoses, setbacks from over compensating and trying to compete, etc. And everyone knows Torres has had his share and that his have been more complicated and difficult to treat than most.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 6, 2014 at 12:24 pm

Mmm, the ball that wound up a double should have been caught for an out. Most guys beside Morse make that.
Next guy up did whack one up the middle but Craw saved it with a diving grab and threw him out at first.
Next, with lead run on 3rd he gets Maybin to pop out and K’s Quentin with trademark out of the zone unhittable slider. Disaster is a bit harsh. regardless he did a great job pitching out of it.

Machi left his forkball or whatever it is up and in the middle of the plate, where it got whacked. He keeps it down it’s unhittable. On him to control his stuff…I thought Baggs was out of line on him. Predictable is not bad if you keep your pitches down where they won’t hurt you. Hudson does it most of the time without throwing gas.

Great story from last night, Pawlie! Very cool.

    —–

The Giants ended up with a great win last night, but I wasn’t digging Bochy’s decision to bring Romo into the bottom of the 9th last night. I don’t care what the reasoning was, or the ultimate result; I’ll never agree that was the right move. Predictably, things got weird, and the game was very close to being lost, and would have been another devastating loss. I don’t want Romo in high stress situations like that for quite a while. He’s still not hitting on all cylinders.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 6, 2014 at 12:38 pm

I say that also because the Giants had the top of their order coming to bat in the top of the 10th.

    • wswins's avatar wswins said, on July 6, 2014 at 12:46 pm

Morse should’ve had the ball that went for a double leading off the inning. Give Romo credit for getting it to the 10th.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 6, 2014 at 12:49 pm

Sorry, but I’ll give Crawford more of the credit.
And on the next batter- that pitch to Mayben looked pretty hittable, too. Mayben was in the dugout in disbelief that he didn’t rake that pitch for at least the winning sac fly.

  12. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 6, 2014 at 12:48 pm

As I said, I didn’t see the comeback. Lurie is usually very solicitous to Giants players, gives ’em lots of rope. He’s definitely down on Romo right now as a guy to use in critical situations, especially if LHBs are involved. I’m inclined to believe him, against LHBs, Romo has given up a .407 OBP and .477 SLG. Looks like it’s essentially Casilla as closer right now, I don’t disagree if that’s the case…

  13. Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on July 6, 2014 at 12:49 pm

One of the best wins of the year. Romo’s reaction after getting out of the 9th was every bit as over-the-top as Morse’s, no doubt the pent-up release of two guys who have endured a miserable month-plus of frustrating play. But it’ll mean little today without a series win and 4 games with the now-favored-to-win-it-all A’s looming. Not sure what would be more encouraging: A 3rd straight gem from Timmy or going a 2nd straight game without getting shut out.

Wonderful story by Pawlie. The first thing I did was check the PawSox’s schedule to see if they’ll be anywhere nearby. Turns out they’ll be in Allentown vs. the Lehigh Valley IronPigs at the same time the Giants will be in Philly later this month. Of course, Torres might be up with the BoSox by then.

A caller into KNBR today made an interesting observation, IMO. Morse getting back into LF from 1B, now with Belt back, may help his hitting. Morse isn’t the best LFer out there, but he’s a better LFer, and more comfortable out there, than at 1b. IMO Belt being back does a lot. Really solidifies the infield defense, as we’ve seen already, and strengthens the lineup definitely — the other guys should get some better pitches to hit with him in the LU…

  15. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 6, 2014 at 1:13 pm

Since Belt is back and Sanchez the designated catcher for Timmy, Bochy is still giving Buster a day off. I don’t see why, when you’re down a Panda, Bochy feels compelled to “rest” Buster from catching. With the team struggling mightily, seems to me you put Posey into such a situation to bolster the lineup, especially where today’s Pads pitcher Hahn handled the Gyros well the last time out. Instead, Posey sits. Maybe it won’t matter, and Posey obviously can PH, and yes Timmy has been great the last two outings with Sanchez. But, IMO is shows again that Bochy is inflexible/uncreative when it comes to managing in challenged circumstances, and that Posey eventually is not going to be catcher, and shouldn’t be much longer…

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 6, 2014 at 1:35 pm

For the Cards, Molina has played 76 games at catcher (plus 3 as DH or PH) out of 88 games so far for the Cards. So, he’s played in 79 of 88.
For SF, Posey has played 60 games as catcher out of 87 games so far. Plus 15 as 1bman, 1 as DH, 5 as PH. So, he’s played in 81 of 87.
Overall, both catchers have pretty much the same game appearances, but Molina compared to Posey is playing catcher in 76/88 (86%) vs. 60/87 (69%) of the games…

Now THAT is a better batting order. Panik may not have come through in his first shot at his natural spot in the order but clutch-man Belt gets the job done. Hope Bochy sticks with this top third of the order. Panik is in VERY good company right now. He should get it going pretty soon.

  21. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 6, 2014 at 1:22 pm

Belt! I’ll take him over Arias at first.
    Belt was/is hitting HRs at around a 1HR : 14AB clip.
He was out two months, so figure he missed about 180-200 ABs. He’s at 10 HRs now. So, had he not been out, he could easily now be around 20 to 25 HRs…

  22. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 6, 2014 at 1:40 pm

Again, I’ll ask with Hector on first and nobody out, why doesn’t Blanco try for a bunt hit there? Because he got a dinger yesterday? Instead he hits an innocuous flyball out. At worst, with a bunt try the Pads throw out the slower runner Hector at 2nd, and Blanco takes first with one down. If he gets the hit, they have men on first and second with nobody out. Either way, ahead of Crawford, it’s better…

Kudos to Panik. He did NOT make a liar outta me. Never thought it would happen so quickly, though. He’s the perfect fit for that two-hole and could be leading off tweaks Pence’s juices more than just a tiddle. What makes Panik so perfect for that slot is that he walks almost as often as much as he strikes out, has a good knack for advancing runners AND has a fair ability to slash doubles. This kid’s gonna be just fine.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 6, 2014 at 2:12 pm

I’m not there yet, Stick. But, I’m down with your analysis. In a lineup of mostly hackers, Panik has the rep of taking good ABs, and he’s mostly showed that so far with SF. He’s only got 36 PAs w/SF, and .306 OBP, so give him another few weeks to see how he does adjusting to big league hurlers. IMO, clearly an overall upgrade on Adrianza, who had much more minor league experience. Sabean’s public verdict on Panik was too early…

  27. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 6, 2014 at 2:17 pm

So, Blanco bluffs a bunt on the first pitch of the AB, takes a strike. Then proceeds to K, looking, on 3 pitches. As blade says, phfffft. Flemm says on radio that he thought the Giants would be happy if Blanco tried to bunt at least once a game. Then why doesn’t he? WTF?…

I get the need to protect the infielders, but there has to be SOME standards. The ball just bounced off the guy’s mitt, and he followed through with a phantom throw to sell it to the ump. It worked.

Just saw the replay on MLB.com
NO freekin way that was an out. It clanked off his glove. Giants feed showed the rule — the fielder must have “complete control of the ball”. That was not even close to having the ball under control. Ridiculous call by the ump. Ridiculous call by the replay umps….

My ideal lineup mix would be 5 hitters to three hackers. With Panik, Belt, Posey and to some degree, Crawford, Giants are gradually getting there. Pence may go on to prove that creative hackery is a weapon at leadoff.

I’m good with taking Timmy out at 100 pitches. 6+ innings, only one run. That’s 23 innings or some such and giving up just one run. Best stretch for Lincecum in seemingly forever. We’ll see if he can keep that up against somebody other than the Cards and Pads. The Pen needs to shut this puppy down…

Yeah. psychologically (for him) it would have been better, especially since his next opponent is Goldilocks and the Snakes.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 6, 2014 at 3:50 pm

Yeah, if Goldsheise goes 0-4 in Timmy’s next start against the DBs, I’m a believer that something in the Force for Timmy has turned…

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 6, 2014 at 3:53 pm

Agree. I still feel Timmy is a “match up” pitcher until otherwise proven wrong. He hasn’t proved that yet in my mind.

Funniest thing Krukow said today; he asked Kuiper: “Are you getting excited about the All-Star game?”
That’s a LOL, as far as I’m concerned.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 6, 2014 at 3:52 pm

On so many levels too. First off, to the best of my knowledge, Kuiper was never selected to an All Star game. Two, the All star game is such a sham, I get more excited about the HR derby then I do the All Star game.

Pitching has been here all along for the most part during this horrid 3 weeks stretch we’ve experienced. In my opinion, what we haven’t seen, is what Bochy calls, “moving the line along.” Giants have definitely done that the last 2 games.

  58. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 6, 2014 at 3:58 pm

I don’t understand this. At all. Bochy risks the game trying to massage Romo’s psyche. The dude has sucked for several weeks, and sucks again. Put him on the DL with a bad elbow, and get him a rehab deal in the minors to get his groove back on. We’re getting good karma back, and Romo is a stumbling block…

  59. stickman's avatar stickman said, on July 6, 2014 at 4:00 pm

Win some lose some. Bochy may have passed Lineup-101 today, but again today he got a flat, farting “F” on not making Romo his slop-time fill in and not relegating him to late innings.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 6, 2014 at 4:03 pm

Agreed. He can’t be trusted. He’s got nuttin’. As Lurie said earlier today, LHBs are eating his lunch. That HR by lefty Grandal was a hit-me slider right over the plate above the knees that didn’t slide. IMO Romo comes in only if the squad is ahead by 5 or more. Up by just 4 in the 8th in an away game? No way. Send him to the DL, get Kontos or somebody else (Oracle says Cordier) up to SF. Romo’s done great for the team in the past, but not now. In MLB, it’s what have you done lately…

  60. pawliekokonuts's avatar pawliekokonuts said, on July 6, 2014 at 4:03 pm

Well, here I am seeing Romo’s ERA explode the same way his caloric intake would skyrocket if he won the hot-dog-eating contest at Coney Island. Yoikes.

Thanks for all the high-fives on the Andres Torres encounter. Based on my thirty-three or so seconds, I’m still going with the decent-guy characterization. Blade’s idea for a book on him is intriguing. But it’d take hours upon hours of sitting with him and revising, revising, revising, revising. It’s all harder than I thought. I’ve been working for more than a year on a memoir of a former Dominican Irish priest-turned Episcopalian. We’ve done recordings, notes, countless meetings. Still not done. Makes me appreciate what others, like Feinstein, have done, all the more.

Feels good to win 2 in a row.
Putting a few hits together is a good sign, though 8 total is not exactly raking. Morse hitting is a good thing.
Belt coming back seems to be a tonic for this lineup. Good. Casilla with a nice close job. Now, up against it vs. the A’s. Gotta play good, clean ball and stellar pitching in order to win against the A’s.
    And, please — nomo Romo…

    • stickman's avatar stickman said, on July 6, 2014 at 5:37 pm

Yer right about Belt. Batting third, as he should be, BB9 has all the earmarks of a prime run-producer. With Posey batting cleanup and then backed up by Pablo (whenever it happens) and Morse this is a strong lineup 1-6. Crawford heats up now and again and without a ton of pressure on him even Blanco will occasionally contribute. Clearest indicator of lineup strength 1-6 is copping that early lead. Except for calm, cool, Greg Maddux types Reverend Underpants can drive pitchers crazy in that leadoff spot. Ultimately Panik will even hit those cerebral hurlers. Belt is a near constant threat and Posey seconds him perfectly.

Not one mention of Romo on the KNBR radio post-game yuk show with the guys…

  69. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 6, 2014 at 4:43 pm

Good game from Panik, agreed tho I didn’t see any of this. Pence and Belt at the top, yeah.
With a LU of Pence Belt Posey (out today) Sandoval (out today) Morse Crawford, he does not deserve to hit in front of any of those guys. The double was his first XBH since the one he got vs. AZ. I understand fans liking him and all the cutesy expressions around his name, but I’m not having Murph polish his plaque for Cooperstown just yet.

Where was Posey supposed to play today, 3b? Let Hector C Lincecum, that seems to be working fine at least lately. I’m fine with Posey sitting on those days, and otherwise with Belt back he can C everyone else full time
What happens to Molina or anyone else is irrelevant, and the less I see of Hector the better…I’d dump this guy in a heartbeat for a Kurt Suzuki type or even Susac if they think he’s ready. But Posey catches.

Though his cogitational process may be as slow as his patience with established vets is long BB15 may have digested a lesson or two today. Besides gradually establishing a more productive lineup Bochy may have learned that Romo is ready for a spell on the DL and that Casilla has what it takes to close. Because Santiago has proven that ability in the past it should not be a major adjustment for the manager.

Two wins in a row may be more significant than many observers would consider ~ particularly with this team which had fallen so far and so fast while including a goodly number of champion quality position players and pitchers. Essentially everything that could go wrong did go wrong ~ starting with those Romo stinkers vs the Rox. Things simply spiraled downwards from there on. If the starting pitching maintains their recent excellence there is no reason to not believe that this outfit is capable of leaving the LaBumbos in their rear-view mirrors before the month is over. We look to have a decent road team. After the recent mess, however, a 9.5 game bulge is but a dissipative dream.

I’m not buying the argument that Bochy is getting dumber in Giants slide. He’s gotten flak for taking Morse out too early, so he left him in Sat game in the 9th and he screwed up a pop fly that could have been disastrous. After he had hit dramatic HR. Hey, if you want him to hit you have to take his OF play. Bochy is fine–it’s his players that need to get back into the winning groove of doing the right things.

Giants played all week and will play all this week without a day off, so there is nothing wrong with sitting Posey with Hector catching him. Posey has played more and more since sitting a couple days with back issue and has regained his hitting stroke too. He’ll likely C all this week except for the one TL start.

Bochy sat Panik for a day when the kid went 0 for ATT and he has responded with a couple good games at the plate. Nothing wrong with trying to get bench guys ABs–it’s up to them to make them good ones.

And I’ll say the same for use of Romo yesterday. Night before Machi had been awful coughing up a lead and giving up 3 rockets, double triple deep sac fly that put Giants in a hole before 9th. Romo got 2 outs night before in clutch situation Sat and Sunday had 9 pitch battle with Quentin whom he had k’d day before with the slider when game was on the line. He couldn’t locate it vs. the LH and it cost him. 4 run lead was perfect time to give him an opp—again it’s up to Romo to make the right pitches and get his slider at back foot, not in hittable zone.

It’s the same thing that cost Street a save Saturday, and has bedeviled likes of Cain and Lincecum too. This is a Rags fix job, not a DL move. And I wouldn’t trust Gutierrez late game either,

And Pence at the top has been great, hacker or no. I don’t care about patience, just about results. Hacker that Pence is his OB is tops on team, he hustles every hit or dribbler, and with LH Belt behind him those 2 can be instant offense.
