Peavy Needs to Tone it Down
I get that Peavy’s “intense” and whatnot, but he might be better served to dial it down a notch or two. It’s pretty hard to play loose when you’ve got a guy on the mound who’s ready to start gnashing nails the moment something goes even slightly wrong. Peavy makes Voggy look like an impish schoolgirl. He’s now 1-11 on the year and he might consider that all that bad luck is at least partially his doing. Not every pitch he throws has to feel like the World Series is on the line…..
Now, to the Michael Morse Problem: He’s obviously sucked for a while now. It would be nice to give him a day off. Possibly a permanent one. But Bochy’s hands are tied because Sabean sat on his until the trade deadline came and went. So we get to enjoy all the Michael Morse we can stomach or, at best, whatever replacement-level player Bochy decides to pivot to….
MadBum needs a huge huge effort today. This is the Mets. It shouldn’t take much with all their left handed hitters and a gimpy shouldered David Wright……..
I’m going to disagree somewhat about Peavy. When the Giant’s slide started, it looked to me like some players were tanking it. Maybe not blowing games for dollars but maybe they were just pissed at management or something. At times It looked like some of the players thought sitting in the locker room sucking down cold ones and eating KFC, wasn’t such a bad idea. So I’m kinda of liking Peavy getting fired up and hope it lights up some of the players. On the other hand getting so fired up that you melt down isn’t going to win any games. But damn man, you start having losing streaks because players aren’t doing their jobs, hell yeah I want someone on the team to get pissed off.
Morse might be one of those guys wishing he was in the locker eating a bucket of KFC, I don’t know. I do know when he’s hitting to the opposite field he’s on, and right now it looks like he’s trying to pull everything. His ability to jack one out (when he was hitting) has made his D tolerable, but seventh inning in a perfect game and he made the last out, he’s gotta be on the bench. Guys are running into walls making plays, for both teams, and we get a left fielder that misreads two flies back to back? Still two pitchers taking no nos into the 6th was fun to watch for me.
Yeah, I have to admit, last night’s game, though obviously eventually disappointing, was at least highly entertaining and the Giants’ 8th was exciting. But all I can really say is…at least the Dodgers didn’t play
Now that Frank Duffy’s back, can Vern Geishert be far behind?
Me? I welcome ANY player that cares. Dude has a Cy Young award and a history of excellence (albeit, he’s had injuries – yet that has nothing to do with intensity). In short, it seems to work for him. Wins is not the first stat I look at when evaluating pitchers, i.e., too many other factors effect a win. Give me an entire roster of Vogy, Pence, Peavy any day . . . I wish other players, such as Posey would show as much emotion as these guys do.
Sad to hear about DBax going after McCutchen late game down by 5 with base open. Gibson had already been tossed but you know his hands are all over this one. First pitch way inside that missed, two pitches later 95 mph fastball in the back. Golds being hit was accidental; if you don’t like it get a retaliation done early and out of the way, then play ball. Waiting to drill another team’s AS is brutal.
Used to be part of LaRussa’s MO too.
Dbax traded Prado and Parra, they’re playing the kids, yada yada. The idea that everyone left has to be taught the Gibson way and that an AS player on a contender could have been seriously hurt is disgrace to baseball.
“Peavy makes Voggy look like an impish schoolgirl. ”
Funny
Is this Duffy kid better than Panik? Or is he just the latest shot in the dark at 2b by Sabes?
Give me the low down, Flappers…
IMO too small of a sample size for both.
I’ll let you know Snarkk after I can tell which one between Panik or Duffy can shave 1st..
Like Blade mentioned to small a sample size, but one thing they could both use alittle Aunt Bea’s cooking on their skinny frames, probably Duffy more, as he looks skinnier then Lincecum.
Thanks, guys. I had never even heard of this Duffy kid before, so I assume he was a non-prospect minor league fill-the-roster type…
Yeah, the only Duffy I know owns a tavern
Initially, he was snarkk, but he has surprised in the minors. Very rare for the Giants (or any MLB team) to elevate a player from Double A. His 2011 Orleans Firebirds coach Kelly Nicholson said this about him, “Duffy had a huge summer. “He’s a hard worker, and he’s a good baseball player. He can play second, short, third, you can probably run him into the outfield. Our backup catcher signed today, and (Duffy) told me he could catch. He’s just a hard worker. He’s a great, great Cape Cod League story.”
I’ll take players with “Fire in their eyes” all the time.Jake Peavy has it,so does Pence,Voggy, and the guy who really had it,and even made Peavy look like choir boy was Brad Penny when we 1st got him, and he was reeling off wins and taking no prisoners with players are umps. His attitude was just downright “BadAss” and it was working for a stretch with us, and it was contagious with his teammates when he pitched, as they seemed to play with more passion and aggressiveness.
Morse moved down to 6th behind Belt in today’s lineup. I’d prefer he not be in at all, but I guess this’ll have to do.
Who would you put in instead of Morse?
Morse is made for the DH and the American League if he ever gets his stroke back. The NL stubbornly insists these type of players play LF or 1st Base as if these two positions are the designated positions for the slow and inept ballplayers with some pop who barely can field anywhere, anytime.
Price you pay. Boston didn’t have problem winning the World Series with Ortiz at 1b and they weren’t going to sacrifice his bat.
Nip, you and Loo made 3 AM posts on last thread…course, he’s in NY. I think if you got more rest and recovery time you might think a little clearer. Relax, man. Game will start soon.
What will neither start nor end soon will be ESPN game tonite of guess who.
Zum pointed out how long their Friday game lasted, and yesterday game time was 3:56 for 9 innings. Giants and Mets have played 2 games in just one hour more than that.
Just one more reason to end DH and increase rosters so no jobs lost. If you can’t field your position or run, your team has to survive it if they want your bat in there, just like baseball has for 100 freaking years.
Bumgarner coming to bat this inning, for some reason I really enjoy watching/ listening when he comes up in a inning.
They at least gave him that one shot before making him bunt.
My niece just texted me to say she got Crawford’s foul ball.
Nice Pawlie!!
Good to hear a Flapper has some hands and instinct to pounce on a foul ball!!
She ain’t no Flapper; big Mets fan. But a true baseball fan, too.
Maybe they should just play Morse back at the warning track.
Always easier to run forward. Morse looks a little off at the plate, too.
BUT, Belt is back. 🙂
Hey edd, how ya doin?
I am doing good, UK style.
In California in September.
I’ll bet is is lovely, lovely summer time where you are?
Good to hear. I’m doing good NC style. July and the start of August have been wet, hot and muggy. Going up to DC to see the Giants play later this month. Last time I went up for the series we got swept, that was 2012 and that year turned out pretty good.
There ya go Manny. Bum with the base knock.
If Pence is *really* hurt…I;ma gonna notta be happy
Pence is en fuego. Senor Snotrockets is in control. Belt! is back.
Asta piggamore. El stupido mangia tutti
Non parlare Espagnole. Maybe a few hundred words most Americanos del Norte understand. Higher proportion in Cali.
Error on the centerfielder? The catcher didn’t fucking catch the ball!! Whatever.
On a side note, today, August 3rd, is the 88th birthday of Anthony Dominick Benedetto AKA…Mr. Tony Bennett…what whose left his heart where mine’s remains pumping
Happy Birthday, Mr. Bennett. Everytime I hear your signature song, it means a Giants win to me
Good call Ted. Happy Bday Mr. B.
it’s my sister’s birthday today, too. She’s up here in Oregon with me. I’ll let her know about her bday pal!
Excellent. Are you taking a nostalgic tour of Lewis and Clark College whilst there?
no, we’re in black butte. LC is in Portland.
Yes Happy Birthday Mr Tony Bennett”
Double 8’s and still looking great.
Belt comes back and we get all HR happy again.
How do you spell six innings of virtually pure mastery? 65 pitches @10.8 per IP. 51 strikes. 14 balls. One hit. One walk. 8 special K’s. This is waaay better than even normal no-no’s for most pitchers who attain such a feat. Why? Look at the economy of pitches. The nearly total command and control. And he has one of the better OBP’s on the team ~ top 8 or 10 anyway~ including today’s base-knock and base on balls. This guy has not got past his mid-20’s yet. Maddux territory may be approaching soon. Bumgarner may eclipse Opie over these next couple seasons ~ if only he can get it together at ATT. Road Warrior supreme.
Yeah Bum’s dealing today Stick, his command is spot on compared to his last start at home, when he seemed to have a funky motion going, or as the Krooker would say”bad arm slot”
And when your throwing 1 st pitch strikes, like he is today, and like Maddux use to,and Huddy, your gonna win more often then not.
The Giants have hit only two home runs in their last 10 games and their seven long balls since the All-Star Game are tied for the second-fewest in the Majors…SF entered the break with the third-most homers in the NL
Even “Duda, Duda, day” giving it his best shot could not quite solve the riddler today. 84 pitches through eight is a spectacular economy of pitches. Definite Maddux territory.
Pence is singing New York, New York today.
Belt being back seems to have ignited our other too tall Texan. Pence is steaming. The offense could become even nastier once Pagan returns. Who knows, the infection of something other than his ongoing ‘crud” problems might even strike Morse.
Cool quote yesterday from WilcoJoe, a quote from the REM song “What’s The Frequency, Kenneth?” which was quoting a Richard Linklater movie.
Giants’ victories are the cure for disgust or apathy. 🙂
Good game Bum. Way to bounce back Giants.
Fun game to watch there, MadB could do no wrong. Lotsa bats and a long fly into the Finnerty’s crowd.
great way to spend a Sunday evening.
Stay awesome, flappers.
94 pitch two-hit shutout. Bumgarner has achieved a new plateau in general excellence as a pitcher. He has now fully accessed the Master level. At his age and developmental status Snotrockets may be expected to throw an increasing proportion of games at this plateau. Today’s effort has made him a serious Cy contender.
A contender, but it’s Kershaw unless Kershaw starts stumbling. Kershaw is currently 13-2, with a 1.72 ERA and .824 WHIP, and doesn’t appear to be slowing up.
Before the game Friday night a bunch of Giant fans behind the SF dugout were yelling happy birthday to Snot boy. He couldn’t be bothered to even turn around and give then a 1 second acknowledgment.
He seems like a candidate for a Carlton-like media boycott at some point in his career.
Of course, I wonder if that’s even possible today.
It was very uncool, James. He was in the dugout doing nothing but leaning on the railing during BP. Nobody was cursing at him or making wisecracks. These were all Giant fans – lots of kids, too. Snotty fuck.
No reason to make light of it’s only the Mets, either. Cubs, who are even worse and dumped off better parts of their SPs, are giving LA all they can handle: 8-2 pounding Friday, took 12 innings for LA to win on walk off HR 5-2, and 1-1 in 5th today.
Scrubini teams like Mets aren’t going 0-50 rest of the year and even worst ones will still win 60 plus times a season.
“What’s the frequency, Kenneth?” is what a wacko attacking Dan Rather said to the newscaster.
That’s true; I was referencing one of the lines in the song, the line about disgust and apathy:
“Richard said, “Withdrawal in disgust is not the same as apathy”
A smile like a cartoon, tooth for a tooth
You said that irony was the shackles of youth
You wore a shirt of violent green
I never understood the frequency”
thanks for the edumication
Re Loo’s comments about Bumgarner ignoring fans, it is disheartening. I’d maybe get it if he were pitching that day. I get that the players are *at work*. But I find many players ignorant dolts when it comes to manners. I saw this a few years ago when I approached the bullpen of the Rays’ farm team. They acted like I was gonna bribe them. (Maybe that’s part of it? League policy??) Actually, that’s what made Babe Ruth so special. He seemed to enjoy the limelight, the fans. In the SI Verducci piece, Roger Angell recalled how he’d see Ruth around Manhattan, in his camel-hair coat.
Happy birthday, Tony B.
As much as the Giants can pluck off the waiver wire, we will be just as exposed. That’s unsettling.
Nice article about Pete Van Wieren, who passed away. That whole ol’ Braves crew, Van Wieren, Ernie Johnson, and Skip Carey are gone now. Those were the Turner Superstation years, before the MLB package brought games everywhere.
http://www.myajc.com/news/sports/pete-van-wieren-last-of-the-iconic-braves-broadcas/ngs2S/#a3f06053.257107.735448
Couldn’t stand those guys. No disrespect intended.
V-W was good announcer, didn’t try to sugarcoat how bad Braves often were in those days without sounding whiney like Skip did. Pretty laid back style too, and watching the Braves wasn’t easy on the eyes.
My buddies and I mostly made fun of how bad they were.
I’m gonna spit if Brandon League works out of this bases-loaded jam.
🙂
League gets shelled. Cool!
The Cubs took advantage of no Kershaw and Greinke, you gotta give them credit. The Dodgers are allowing the Giants to hang around. The Giants are still right there in this strange season.
LaBumbos have two frontline starters and Ryu is close to that. They’ve got maybe three good relievers. So their staff is built well for post-season though it’s long-haul depth is questionable. Their top three come up against few matches, but when they do then it becomes a matter of who makes the fewest mistakes and whose defense and offense can rise to the occasion.
And as I say that, the Cubs pitcher hits Turner to lead off the 8th.
At some point, the Cubs’ “Cubiness” had to kick in.
And they turn two to get out of it. Cool.
If that’s how MadBum pitches two days after blowing off the fans, then he can make that a regular part of his between-starts routine for all I care. And a heckuva job by the Cubbies taking 2 of 3 in Smell A.
The Cubs gave us some major help back in 2010, too…
that often goes un-remembered but you are absolutely *spot on*.
You going to the game tomorrow?
How so? Beating the Padres?
Very likely. Gonna check Stubhub early morning. How about you & Pawlie or anybody else?
I can’t; five-plus hours away. If I were in Connecticut, I’d go.
Yep, think I’m somewhere in upper deck.
Wanna have a beer? They have ice-cold 25 ounce cans for $ 11.00. Not bad these days…
Hmmm, that could be tempting. Where’s that at?
Had ’em all over on the lower level Friday. Don’t see why they wouldn’t be everywhere.
Our runs differential is way better than any other Wild Card contender.
They can tell it to their caddies in October…
We shall see.
Dang. I think it is great that Macdog and DJLoo get to meet. I first met Dog at Citi Field before the Aubry Huff Meltdown Game. I think Loo couldn’t make it because there was a conflict with the NY Rangers.
Yes, a memorable game that one. Funny how I somehow picked you out of the crowd milling about before the game even though we had never met.
Heck, maybe you’d’ve picked me out of a crowd on 42nd Street in the “old days” hahahahaha.
Or maybe I was just having a meltdown of my own…
…who knows. But I really recall a conflict with a Rangers game.
That day, the Red Sox later blew a huge lead (13-14 runs?) to the Yankees, in an omen for their season. But — wait for it — the San Francisco Giants went on to WIN THE 2012 WORLD SERIES.
I’ll be in 420, left of home plate.
I have both of your emails; want an intro to each other??
You can give Mac my e-mail, PK. I’m hoping to sit a little lower, but I’ll come up and find Mac at some point.
new thread!
