Peavy Needs to Tone it Down

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 3, 2014

I get that Peavy’s “intense” and whatnot, but he might be better served to dial it down a notch or two. It’s pretty hard to play loose when you’ve got a guy on the mound who’s ready to start gnashing nails the moment something goes even slightly wrong. Peavy makes Voggy look like an impish schoolgirl. He’s now 1-11 on the year and he might consider that all that bad luck is at least partially his doing. Not every pitch he throws has to feel like the World Series is on the line…..

Now, to the Michael Morse Problem: He’s obviously sucked for a while now. It would be nice to give him a day off. Possibly a permanent one. But Bochy’s hands are tied because Sabean sat on his until the trade deadline came and went. So we get to enjoy all the Michael Morse we can stomach or, at best, whatever replacement-level player Bochy decides to pivot to….

MadBum needs a huge huge effort today. This is the Mets. It shouldn’t take much with all their left handed hitters and a gimpy shouldered David Wright……..

I’m going to disagree somewhat about Peavy. When the Giant’s slide started, it looked to me like some players were tanking it. Maybe not blowing games for dollars but maybe they were just pissed at management or something. At times It looked like some of the players thought sitting in the locker room sucking down cold ones and eating KFC, wasn’t such a bad idea. So I’m kinda of liking Peavy getting fired up and hope it lights up some of the players. On the other hand getting so fired up that you melt down isn’t going to win any games. But damn man, you start having losing streaks because players aren’t doing their jobs, hell yeah I want someone on the team to get pissed off.

Morse might be one of those guys wishing he was in the locker eating a bucket of KFC, I don’t know. I do know when he’s hitting to the opposite field he’s on, and right now it looks like he’s trying to pull everything. His ability to jack one out (when he was hitting) has made his D tolerable, but seventh inning in a perfect game and he made the last out, he’s gotta be on the bench. Guys are running into walls making plays, for both teams, and we get a left fielder that misreads two flies back to back? Still two pitchers taking no nos into the 6th was fun to watch for me.

Yeah, I have to admit, last night’s game, though obviously eventually disappointing, was at least highly entertaining and the Giants’ 8th was exciting. But all I can really say is…at least the Dodgers didn’t play

Me? I welcome ANY player that cares. Dude has a Cy Young award and a history of excellence (albeit, he’s had injuries – yet that has nothing to do with intensity). In short, it seems to work for him. Wins is not the first stat I look at when evaluating pitchers, i.e., too many other factors effect a win. Give me an entire roster of Vogy, Pence, Peavy any day . . . I wish other players, such as Posey would show as much emotion as these guys do.

Sad to hear about DBax going after McCutchen late game down by 5 with base open. Gibson had already been tossed but you know his hands are all over this one. First pitch way inside that missed, two pitches later 95 mph fastball in the back. Golds being hit was accidental; if you don’t like it get a retaliation done early and out of the way, then play ball. Waiting to drill another team’s AS is brutal.
Used to be part of LaRussa’s MO too.

Dbax traded Prado and Parra, they’re playing the kids, yada yada. The idea that everyone left has to be taught the Gibson way and that an AS player on a contender could have been seriously hurt is disgrace to baseball.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 3, 2014 at 10:03 am

Initially, he was snarkk, but he has surprised in the minors. Very rare for the Giants (or any MLB team) to elevate a player from Double A. His 2011 Orleans Firebirds coach Kelly Nicholson said this about him, “Duffy had a huge summer. “He’s a hard worker, and he’s a good baseball player. He can play second, short, third, you can probably run him into the outfield. Our backup catcher signed today, and (Duffy) told me he could catch. He’s just a hard worker. He’s a great, great Cape Cod League story.”

I’ll take players with “Fire in their eyes” all the time.Jake Peavy has it,so does Pence,Voggy, and the guy who really had it,and even made Peavy look like choir boy was Brad Penny when we 1st got him, and he was reeling off wins and taking no prisoners with players are umps. His attitude was just downright “BadAss” and it was working for a stretch with us, and it was contagious with his teammates when he pitched, as they seemed to play with more passion and aggressiveness.

  9. Nipper's avatar Nipper said, on August 3, 2014 at 9:29 am

Morse is made for the DH and the American League if he ever gets his stroke back. The NL stubbornly insists these type of players play LF or 1st Base as if these two positions are the designated positions for the slow and inept ballplayers with some pop who barely can field anywhere, anytime.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 3, 2014 at 9:39 am

Price you pay. Boston didn’t have problem winning the World Series with Ortiz at 1b and they weren’t going to sacrifice his bat.
Nip, you and Loo made 3 AM posts on last thread…course, he’s in NY. I think if you got more rest and recovery time you might think a little clearer. Relax, man. Game will start soon.

  10. willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 3, 2014 at 9:44 am

What will neither start nor end soon will be ESPN game tonite of guess who.
Zum pointed out how long their Friday game lasted, and yesterday game time was 3:56 for 9 innings. Giants and Mets have played 2 games in just one hour more than that.
Just one more reason to end DH and increase rosters so no jobs lost. If you can’t field your position or run, your team has to survive it if they want your bat in there, just like baseball has for 100 freaking years.

How do you spell six innings of virtually pure mastery? 65 pitches @10.8 per IP. 51 strikes. 14 balls. One hit. One walk. 8 special K’s. This is waaay better than even normal no-no’s for most pitchers who attain such a feat. Why? Look at the economy of pitches. The nearly total command and control. And he has one of the better OBP’s on the team ~ top 8 or 10 anyway~ including today’s base-knock and base on balls. This guy has not got past his mid-20’s yet. Maddux territory may be approaching soon. Bumgarner may eclipse Opie over these next couple seasons ~ if only he can get it together at ATT. Road Warrior supreme.

    • Alleykat's avatar Alleykat said, on August 3, 2014 at 12:23 pm

Yeah Bum’s dealing today Stick, his command is spot on compared to his last start at home, when he seemed to have a funky motion going, or as the Krooker would say”bad arm slot”
And when your throwing 1 st pitch strikes, like he is today, and like Maddux use to,and Huddy, your gonna win more often then not.

94 pitch two-hit shutout. Bumgarner has achieved a new plateau in general excellence as a pitcher. He has now fully accessed the Master level. At his age and developmental status Snotrockets may be expected to throw an increasing proportion of games at this plateau. Today’s effort has made him a serious Cy contender.

No reason to make light of it’s only the Mets, either. Cubs, who are even worse and dumped off better parts of their SPs, are giving LA all they can handle: 8-2 pounding Friday, took 12 innings for LA to win on walk off HR 5-2, and 1-1 in 5th today.
Scrubini teams like Mets aren’t going 0-50 rest of the year and even worst ones will still win 60 plus times a season.

Re Loo’s comments about Bumgarner ignoring fans, it is disheartening. I’d maybe get it if he were pitching that day. I get that the players are *at work*. But I find many players ignorant dolts when it comes to manners. I saw this a few years ago when I approached the bullpen of the Rays’ farm team. They acted like I was gonna bribe them. (Maybe that’s part of it? League policy??) Actually, that’s what made Babe Ruth so special. He seemed to enjoy the limelight, the fans. In the SI Verducci piece, Roger Angell recalled how he’d see Ruth around Manhattan, in his camel-hair coat.

    Happy birthday, Tony B.

LaBumbos have two frontline starters and Ryu is close to that. They’ve got maybe three good relievers. So their staff is built well for post-season though it’s long-haul depth is questionable. Their top three come up against few matches, but when they do then it becomes a matter of who makes the fewest mistakes and whose defense and offense can rise to the occasion.
