You either want it tor you don’t. Down the stretch in 2010 and 2012, those were Giants who wanted it bad. I get the ho hum feeling of going through motions in this last series. The Pirates are playing to win it and they may have our number this year. Now we have so many young guys who have never experienced a pennant chase and our vets are banged up. May be just in our karma this year. With that said, my prediction for this year was .500, so we have exceeded that and we just have 3 games to clinch, but they should be playing for Wild Card home field and playing all out. 2 of 3 in LA boys…

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 22, 2014 at 6:14 am

well, you, me, Snarkk, Twin and the rest of Flapper Nation could want it like a motherfucker and yet we all know we couldn’t get it done (if put out there to play). We might not have the horses healthy enough to make it happen this year. And still, unless there is a total team wide collapse, we will be making the post season. At that point just take it one game at a time……

Going through the motions? I absolutely disagree. No way the veterans on this club lie down and quit. And the rooks, you know they would love NOTHING MORE than to contribute to some magic. I just think it is a combination of not having your best available (as both Craig and Flan mention), and I also think this team is just dog-ass tired. But no way do I think they are quitting.

  2. paulinasia's avatar paulinasia said, on September 22, 2014 at 6:24 am

It’s been a bit tempting to think that this team doesn’t really seem to want it as much as the two previous championship teams did, just based on what looks like lackluster play recently. But it would be fairly silly to think that even a single guy on that team doesn’t want it. Of course they do. Flannery’s right and Craig too: could just be too unhealthy here at the close of the season this time around. But it’s also a good point Flannery makes: division winner, wildcard, whatever, it doesn’t matter. Everyone has their eyes on the grand prize. Don’t matter how you get there, just get there, exactly right, one game at a time. I’ve stopped sweating division winner or even wildcard game in Pittsburgh. If they’re gonna get it done, they’re gonna get it done. They just have to … you know… get there….

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on September 22, 2014 at 7:37 am

I agree, Paul. No way in hell the team has quit. Combo of being banged-up, tired, and not having your best nine out there on a regular basis. But no way in hell do I think it is over. Any team can catch a charge at any time. We saw our boys do it in 2010 and again in 2012. Baseball is a funny game. It could happen again.

Don’t get your dauber down – Humm Baby!

I’d plAy either and be happy just to get there. Wainwright might be an issue but really, any team can beat any team on a given day,
      I miss that playoff atmosphere

Some good pitching match-ups between our boys and the bumbinos. And the series finale…I know it looks like Hudson is on fumes, but as I mentioned, baseball is a funny game, in a beautiful way, and it would not surprise me to see Hudson throw a gem, and beat Kershaw. Stranger things have happened…that is for damned sure. GO GIANTS!

Yeah, just get in. Everyone starts 0-0 from there.
I’m enjoying the fresh faces–Pirates, O’s, at least one of Royals/ Mariners.
Pirates have a lot of young guys who haven’t been in this type of race before either, good story. Perennial contender Braves under .500. How did this happen?
Would be really nice to send Cards packing again in WC.

Pretty fair assessment from rooster too.

Nice to hear Mr. O and Mr. S-Dawg enjoyed a game together. My godson might have been there too. As a kid he was always in full SF gear, Bonds and Will Clark, and now is full Pads fan since he lives there.
Hasn’t changed football allegiance from Raiders tho, to eternal consternation of his Dad’s side of family, die hard Charger fans from AFL days of Lincoln and Lowe. Dad even said something at wedding reception about hoping his grandkids “Bolt up.”

  6. willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 22, 2014 at 8:22 am

    Quick look at NL standings:
LA 45-25 vs. West, Giants 36-33. Bad as rest of divison has been this year, that’s been a sore spot for SF. Wasn’t it vs. DBax that SF had that terrible stretch at home, the inside the park HR, etc.?
Getting outhit and outscored by offensively challenged Padres not a good sign. Pads are dead last in all baseball almost every offensive category imaginable, tho pitching 2nd in NL for ERA. Not that it matters, but Sherps now 3 up on AZ to avoid last place finish.

Dodgers with NL best 49 road wins, Giants very respectable 42 (nice to see that go up a couple!).
Cards and Pirates both tops with 51 home wins

Yes, it’ll be tough to watch two headed tool monster of Puig and Hanley celebrate clinching, but it just doesn’t mean as much these days.
LA won the division last year, but didn’t hang around playoffs very long.

I like Flannery but I am sort of annoyed by the tweet or whatever it is. I don’t agree with the idea that the club doesn’t want it or isn’t trying. Maybe they need to try easier or something but they have sort of had this ‘oh, we’ll turn it on’ attitude.

  8. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 22, 2014 at 9:56 am

Meow=how. I don’t get the whole ‘who wants it more’ shit you keep hearing about. Of course everyone on a given team wants it. From the shittiest A team to the majors. With 2 teams, one loses. Maybe one team had better players, maybe it’s the park-adjusted humidity factor. Maybe it was a fluke. But it IS a grind to play this amount of games and reach the playoffs. The best teams lose around 70 games. Flan’s right in how you deal with the inherent nature of failure in baseball. It is one of the hardest games to play at this high a level, and you still fail in 7 out of 10 ABs for the great ones. Shit goes cold and no one hits.

They are still in the race, and all bets are off once the playoffs start.

  9. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 22, 2014 at 9:57 am

  15. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 22, 2014 at 10:36 am

Flannery’s trying to buck up the fans with that text, saying a lot of things that people have posted on the Flap the last few days. The Giants were never the obvious pick and the media’s favorite in 2010 and 2012, for any round of the playoffs, including the World Series. And there was a lot of turnover between 2010 and 2012 on the roster, as there is in 2014.
One of the big differences, of course, is that the 2010 and 2012 teams were division-winners, and this year’s team is probably going the 1-game Wild Card route, i.e. this year’s team isn’t as good as those other teams, especially given the injuries. Some kind of x-factor has to appear. Maybe Belt gets his mojo back? One of the replacement outfielders has an amazing lightning in a bottle contribution? The pitching staff takes things up a notch or two?
    Something.

Thanks to Rooster for his honest assessment of the blues chances…next, gianthead, regarding them maybe clinching the division against us, like Flannery says, who gives a flying fart about the division? pennant okay, bit WS is whats it’s all about…If they wanna jump up and down for winning the division, so be it, we couldn’t care less.

  17. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 22, 2014 at 10:46 am

Another x-factor could be Sandoval, like he was in the 2012 World Series. Sandoval’s season has underwhelmed a bit, so far, IMO. A lot of us thought he would have a monster contract year, and even get in the Gold Glove conversation, and none that has happened this season. But he could have a monster playoffs again. Or Posey. Or Pence. The Giants DO have SOME weapons; they just need to have a hot streak start up again.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on September 22, 2014 at 12:19 pm

It could be any of those, or a combination. But if the right guys get hot (pitching and hitting), and they play tough D, anything can happen.

Until the last out is recorded to end their 2014 season, they’re in this thing.

  18. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 22, 2014 at 10:54 am

Not sure what generated that tweet, maybe a brew or two on the bus? Whatever, I don’t quite understand what the first sentence means, but as for the rest, I get it. He’s saying we just lost 3, but who knows, we’re still in it. Every Flapper and the rest of real Giants fans knows this team is down talent with injuries and all, and the pitching isn’t near as good as the dominating ’10 and ’12. But, they’re still in the hunt the last week of the season. That’s good. I don’t even remember how many games I predicted they’d win — 88, 92? Whatever. Just get in…

  19. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 22, 2014 at 11:04 am

Let’s enjoy this last week where games mean something. I’ve got a hunch the next few years for the Gmen are going to be a rough ride. The starting pitching is looking very shaky and uncertain heading into 2015. Paying $29M for Lincecum and Hudson is a killer. LF and 3b are huge questionmarks, plus Pagan’s back is a big deal, unless that thing can be surgically corrected. Giants can’t have a guy in CF who is out regularly two weeks at a time with an inflamed disk; that just doesn’t work. I just hope they don’t trade Belt, because I think if given a whole season without getting hurt, the guy can take off. But, if Panda leaves, the whole musical chairs game starts with position players, and who knows where that ends up…

  20. wswins's avatar wswins said, on September 22, 2014 at 11:14 am

I wouldn’t worry bout the next few years snarkk…you never know where players are going to come from. You should approach that with the same attitude as 1 game at a time…Panda leaves, so be it. Never has he duplicated his first full year.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 22, 2014 at 11:27 am

Yeah, if Panda goes, I’m not going to be distressed about it. I’ve gotten pretty used to his up and down play and dysfunctional ABs. Post AS Break, he’s hit 5 HRs, OPS at .748 in 58 games, but he’s still in top 5 third sackers for season’s fielding. For September, when it counts, he’s hitting .203 with a .553 OPS. None of those numbers are worth 5 years at $100M, but somebody will pay it, or more. You’re right, his play has declined ever since his first year, because of injury and pitchers know not to throw him a strike. He gets himself out way too much. In case nobody’s noticed, he’s fat again. I really don’t think he’ll be missed on the field near as much as in the stands and the Dugout Store. I just wish Sabes had traded him for some players — now if he leaves they only get a draft pick that won’t be of any help to the big club, if at all, for at least 3 years…

    Happy birthday HacMan!

It should be a fascinating final week of the season, and hopefully the Giants can clinch the WC ASAP. The No. 1 priority is making sure Madum is set to start the WC game next Wednesday, because I’ll take my chances with MadBum in a 1-game playoff whether it’s in Pitt, St. Louis or San Francisco.

Loo mentioned the possibility of the Pirates catching the Cards. I doubt that’s going to happen, but it’s not impossible and certainly something to root for.

Pitt: 4 at Atlanta, 3 at Cincy. Rotation: Mon-Liriano, Tu-Cole, Wed-Locke, Th-Volquez. Worley pitched yesterday.

    Cards: 3 at Cubs, 3 at Arizona. Rotation: Mon-Wainwright, Tu-Miller, Wed-Lackey, Th-off, Fri-Wacha, Sat-Lynn.

If the Pirates are still in contention for the division on Saturday, would they pitch Liriano, who started and won last year’s WC game, and risk not having him for the WC game (or bring him back on 3 days rest)? Maybe the Cards would pitch Wainwright on Saturday as well.

The B.J. Upton signing and Uggla signing turned out to be a disaster for them. And combined with Jones retiring and McCann going to the Yankees, the Braves offense just cratered. I expected Freeman to be an MVP contender, and that didn’t happen. Heyward seems to have plateaued in the same way that Sandoval plateaued. Both good players that people expected to be great.

Another of the Budster’s blue ribbon committees. Will they be as timely as the A’s stadium committee?
    http://m.mlb.com/news/article/95850570/new-committee-to-study-pace-of-game

Seriously, the slow pace of play problem is mainly in the AL. They just need to enforce the current rules. I think an ump can order a batter back into the box and the pitcher to pitch, under current rules. The incessant moving out of the box after each pitch to adjust batting gloves, jock, whatever, is ludicrous, and never used to be that way.
    1. If you won’t/can’t enforce the current rule, make a new rule that a batter can leave the box ONCE in an AB to adjust himself. That’s it. Leave it more than that, and it’s a strike each time you leave. If you need to look at the signs from the 3rd base coach, fine, you move one foot out of the box to look, then get right back in to hit. Panik hits like a hitter should. He stays mostly in the box like Bonds used to, very little funny business.
    2. The ump must call strikes in the strike zone from the knee to the letters. Period. That’s the rule. If the ump won’t do that, the ump gets fined and then suspended for further failures. Enough with these idiotic, pet strike zones for each ump, some of which are about one foot square. I don’t want to hear Kruk’s pre-game explanation of today’s strike zone. Call a damn strike a strike, and move on.
Those two things alone would probably save 15 minutes a game. The problem isn’t really the length of the games, I’m up for a solid, 9 innings or extra innings of play. It’s the wasted time during the game that’s the problem…

I wish there was more input from fans on these kinds of MLB committees, and why not? The fans are the consumers. Don’t most corporations do consumer surveys, consumer focus groups, and that kind of thing? Yet, MLB, and most sports, go to the their castle on the mountain and then come down and proclaim their decisions to us peasants. Us people who, you know, buy the tickets and provide the TV ratings, and fund the entire sport.

zum, you and I and any long-time knowledgeable fan can come up with 2 or 3 things to speed the game like those above, but not mess with it’s essence. It’s not that hard. The MLB poo-bahs need a committee to “study” it, so that when they make a rule change, there’s cover from the “committee”. Just like the Congress — appoint an outside committee to make recommendations on what bases to close, for political cover. Everybody already knows what needs to be done; pitch faster, hit faster, and call more strikes. There’s not much more to it. You can’t cut an inning to 2 outs, or an out to 2 strikes. Plus, they can’t speed it up too much, that cuts down on in-game commercialism at the park and on TV/radio. On the radio, seems like Miller and Flemm sell some darn thing or service just about in between every batter…

Asians are bigtime into it, but mostly it’s the Aussies and Europeans watching at the bars. While I’ve come to appreciate the World Cup, I cannot get into the constant league play games (Barclay’s, etc.). It’s flippin’ annoying that you can’t find the name of the team anywhere on the jersey, just the name of the corporate sponsor. I have no expectations for tonight’s game. I have given up on the division. I’m surprised that Marty Lurie is 100% convinced that we are making the post season. I know what the % is, I just don’t think it’s a lock. The way we’ve been playing and the personnel we have going, I could see us losing every game the rest of the year. I’m not trying to be a negative tool, but facts are facts. We just got swept by the Padres. And even in Arizona, a hitters park, we scored 8 total runs in that series. I mean, come on, it’s one of the biggest series of the year and we are trotting out Blanco leading off and freaking Chris Dominguez 7th. Panda and Pence are hitting like absolute shit. I mean, you gotta have some guys in the line up that hit, score, etc. You don’t win with magic and witchcraft.
The only good news is that Haren can and should pitch like shit. But facing these guys, who knows? Maybe he throws 7 shutout innings…..

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 22, 2014 at 6:39 pm

I don’t think the WC game is a lock, either. It’s likely, not a lock. Certainly not a lock is where it would be held. The Pirates are white hot, the Giants are cold as ice…

Never have tickets, hotel rooms in advance. Expedia, Orbitz, etc., charge a minimum 25% premium. Moreover, I have only planned 2 things. Flight over here (Siem Reap on Sept. 9th) and flight back out of Ho Chi Minh City on January 20th. I wouldn’t even do the latter, but no fucking country wants anyone visiting them without the means and wherewithall to fly back home. I am sort of the U.S. version of a wetback. 🙂

Anywho, I usually travel by bus, minivan, or plane between countries and I only start researching them a few days before my arrival. All goes hand in hand with one of my favorite quotes, “The happiest people are those with a Plan B.”

By the by, Master Sensei Paulinasia turned me on to Luang Prabang . . . and actually, it is a great place to cool your heels. No women, night life, etc. However, the scenery and chill factor are off the scale. Think of some bucolic place in Hawaii that you mentioned on my blog yesterday. Mana dude!

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on September 22, 2014 at 6:58 pm

Snarkk, I abhor using credit cards, as they charge 3% or more on foreign international fees. In Cambodia, you really get hosed, because the Cambodian banks charge a flat $5 fee on every credit card cash advance or purchase. So, cash is king and the way I get around those fees is by using my credit union debit card (albeit, the Cambodians still charge $5 for each cash advance). Typically, I try to have $200 to $500 cash on hand between stops to the ATM. I never carry ID, except for a copy of my passport. Only cash that I need for that day. All credit cards, cash hoard, debit card and other ID, stays in my room safe.

To the Tweep who just called my mom “fat” and made a sexual suggestion: My mom had cancer surgery Thursday. She’s doing fine, thank you.

I mean, come on. Fighting with idiots on twitter? Isn’t that what the unemployed and/or teenager should be doing? I support his anger over any tweet calling out his mom but Jesus Christ, this is a big series and you’re fiddling around with the minions on twitter?
And he does this all the time and he’s not the only beat writer who tweets back and forth to the fans during a game.
