A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Waking Up to A Win

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 23, 2014

I admit it. I didn’t watch the whole game. Getting up at 4am has it’s limitations on when you ultimately shut your eyes to go to sleep.

But I caught the end of the game on mlb.com.

Glad we won, now I feel that we can at least relax a little on the wild card.

The baseball gods are shinning down on Gregor Blanco. He IS the White Shark once again.

He’s gonna have to be if we want to make any noise in the post season this year. I have counted out Pagan and Morse for the rest of the year…..

someone took a picture of Strickland and it looks like a painting. Check it out

That was a late finish, hard to blame anyone for heading to sleep before the end of it; it’s not like the playoffs were at stake (yet), but yeah, a good win. I doubt LA will completely collapse and blow the division, but you never know. At any rate, the G’s are likely safe for at least one “post season” game, and I’ll take that, because we all know that anything can happen. And yeah, Pagan and Morse (who? Yeah, I know his stats from April and May….) are likely pretty much done, but if Blanco does hear the calling and plays as well as he did 2 years ago in the post season, well…. I’m all for that too. Dealing with the present, and also looking at the future? How cool to see a potentially big part of the future come up in September and just flat out deliver (Strickland). Next up: Greinke has never lost to the G’s, and Kershaw is….. Kershaw. Sweep is needed to get the division, and while that’s not likely, beating one of these 2 would be great.

And there’s this: as painful as it was to watch the G’s freefall back in June/July, be thankful you’re not an Atlanta fan: wow, that was a huge disappearing act. And they seem to not really know where they want to go: http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/09/23/john-schuerholz-defines-the-braves-way-and-its-a-pretty-big-pile-of-crap/ On we go, it’s end of September baseball, one of the best things in life.

Pence and Pablo returning to April form mitigated by Crawford, and hopefully Belt with couple hits last night.
Blanco with as many XBHs as entire Dodgers team last night. He and Panik more hits than LA got all night.
Sure SF LU had its down time, but top of LA order–Gordon Puig AGon Kemp–0 for 19 last night. Add in Hanley’s 1-3 you get 1-22 with a walk.
Peavy nails again and pen throws hitless relief. No question LA guys great on paper (and at paycheck time), but on the field Giants of Blanco Susac et al were better last night.

Props to guys who stayed up, esp East Coast. I couldn’t handle it after Belt got thrown out. Nice to see headline today, Giants doing the celebrating.

Yes, Willie, it really is a lot about timing. Pence and Pablo reverting to early season malaise would not be good at this time, but picking it up to mid-summer form would drive the effort. One week to see how it will go. Huge kudos to Peavy (who I hope will be back next year) and the ‘pen for shutting down that top of the order, as you said. We all hate Puig because he’s an ass and a Dodger and also so talented, but.. maybe it’s just me, but A-Gon is the guy I love watching flail and fail when it’s all on the line. Can’t explain it.

Sure, it wasn’t the playoffs, but it was still an epic game, and as Blade said, a thread for the ages. I was tempted to cash it in after the Giants stranded RISP for three consecutive innings, but there was something intangible last night…I just really sensed a W, and at 10:44 even said they are gonna win this game.

Was great to see the Clown back. His ears must have been burning, as I asked where the hell he had been sometime during the afternoon, yesterday.

Division will be tough. I am with Paul and feel it would require a sweep. Probably not going to happen, but I agree with him that if you beat either Greinke or Kershaw, that is something. Seriously hoping at this point just to make the dance, and if so, have that one game play-in at our yard.

Belt had a couple of great ABs. On one he went down 0-2, but hung tough and worked the count full, and then laced a hit through the infield. It was a beauty. And how about Sacramento’s and Jesuit High School’s finest, Mr. Susac getting the game winning knock.

Regardless of how this season ends, I am proud as hell of this team and the way they have battled through some serious adversity. Let’s get it on and get another W tonight. Oh, one last thing, Bochy was just pulling all the wrong levers and pushing all the wrong buttons last night…that alone adds to the magnitude of last night’s win.

Make it an awesome day, Flap Nation.

One other thing. Last night was one of those nights where it really came apparent what a great gig we have here. I cannot tell you all (those who I have been fortunate to meet in person, and otherwise), how much I love the brotherhood of this blog. And a huge thanks to Craig for providing the playground. This place kicks ass.

  6. willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 23, 2014 at 8:18 am

I think because we watch them day and day out it’s easy to get down on guys who underperform and don’t meet expectations, but so many teams have worse issues. Braves firing the GM while keeping a clueless mgr. signal changes to come over there after disappointing season.

And that’s why I’m not dooming next season, nor this one as have others earlier. Division is a 2 team race, and likely to continue for at least a year or two. A full of year of Peavy plus Cain and SPs could easily be better than this year. Adding Strickland full time should be nice boost to pen. A lot of teams have quality pitching available…A’s unlikely to re-sign Lester, for one.
Replacing couple bats in the LU will be harder, but that’s a league wide problem, not just for SF. Great contributions this year from Susac and Panik, gaining valuable experience. Combine them with Belt Posey Pence Crawford and however OF/3b shakes out, solid contender led by 2 legit aces at top of rotation.

    Nice article on MLB
Andrew Susac had a mandate to maintain his concentration as another Giants-Dodgers classic unfolded Monday. Around the ninth inning, he received advice from Carl Kochan, San Francisco’s strength and conditioning coach: “Make sure you’re ready. Stay locked in.” Susac channeled that focus into his 13th-inning pinch-hit appearance, when he delivered a tiebreaking single that helped lift the Giants to a 5-2 victory.

*Geez, Puig made that throw from Canoga Park and got Belt in LA.

    * You remember Guilder Rodriguez- the guy who finally got his cup ‘o Joe after 13 years and over 1,000 games in the minors- he got his 1st hit in the bigs last night. Later his first RBI

*Crawford’s throw hit an eagle. Who dropped it to the cut off man.

    *99, 98, 99…Dude-it’s not cheese until it’s 100.

    * The cats are at the window banging their forks. They’ll have to wait until the lobster tails are done

    * It’s finally official- Juan Perez is a professional hitter

    * Blanco overran 2nd base on purpose- needed to get ready for the playoffs

*Posey, Pablo, Pence 1 for 15. The Tofu of the order.

This is a stat that frustrates us all!! San Francisco, which stranded 11 runners, including six in scoring position from the sixth through 11th innings

    • Chipower9's avatar Chipower9 said, on September 23, 2014 at 9:59 am

Yeah, but the Giants are actually better than most at deliverying…usually. They are 10th with RISP, and first with RISP, two outs. More teams fail in these situations than us, but yes, still frustrating…especially when it happens for three consecutive frames while playing extras.

  14. willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 23, 2014 at 9:47 am

Mgr. just puts the guys out there, up to them to do the job. Arias had been hot. Was Bochy saving Susac? If he was, came through at optimal time. All the pen were lights out and shut LA down completely.
Yes, Dominguez was awful, misjudge the ball and the slide, then a terrible throw to try and get Uribe.

But look at LA–last week of the season, and Gordon still looks terrible at 2b…2 really bad plays. Plus Kemp and Puig, no strangers to controversy, screw up a perfectly catchable routine out fly ball. Rundown on Blanco allows run to score, the okey-doke move by trail runner.

Reading through the “1954” by Bill Madden, the Giants of that year under Durocher hit something like 10 PH HRs. Brilliant managing or players getting it done when given the opportunity?

Use him and still have Susac , you still have Belt D at 1b.

And it took an amazing throw from Pig. Guys are paid to gun down runners. It happens. I say you tip your cap.

  15. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 23, 2014 at 10:12 am

For all the supposed dearth in the minors, guys like Strickland, Susac, and Panik are making good their opportunities. Duffy may very well find a niche. There’s guys like Steve Okert LHP in AA hitting their stride as well. In limited Flying Squirrell duty, Okert has 38 k’s in 33 innings, and 5 of 6 in saves/oppo’s. 2.73 era. If nothing else, he could be our next loogy for years to come.

    • stickman's avatar stickman said, on September 23, 2014 at 10:16 am

Okert may get a good long look in ST. That could mean Lopez or Affeldt may be wearing different colors come the end of July.

Kudos to Peavy and the magnificent Bullies. Jake had one sub-par inning out of seven and the guys in the pen went six without giving up a run, a hit or even a walk. That lack of clutch with risp is scary. Panda watch: Dude was 0 for forever last night including a GDP. Generally better than ok in the field, though. Looks as if his contract drive has stalled right at crunch time. He has six games to atone for that. Belt is back in the loop. He apparently is seeing the ball again. Gonna need that bat as Pence has cooled considerably and Buster is buzzed. El Tiburon Blanco certainly has recovered from his early season blahs.

Greinke/Bumgarner matchup could be a classic ~ like maybe no hits by either side till the 5th inning, maybe?
One positive about all the injuries and floppolas is that the kidz got their opportunity to shine. Panik, Susac, Duffy and Strickland should all be on the 25 going into April. Panik is essentially a lock on the nine.

What the hell happened to our ’49 Hudson? Blown headgasket?

  17. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on September 23, 2014 at 10:15 am

Doggers magic number stays at 3, ours is 2 to clinch a WC. But look- it’s obviously a long shot but winning out is hardly beyond the realm. Do that and the Bums would have to sweep the Rockheads to win the West or take 2 to tie- and then play here in a one game play-in.
    I know, always dreaming.

Looks to me like Sabes has no choice but to sign Peavy for at least a 2 year deal. He’s 33. Lots of teams will come after him after this 2nd half performance. He’s got some allegiance to Bochy, but you have to show the checkbook to make things happen these days. Bum, Cain, Peavy, eh, sounds OK as long as the Cain elbow recovers, and Peavy suddenly doesn’t turn 36ish in a 34 year old body…

  22. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 23, 2014 at 10:40 am

Dunno about anybody else, but for me that was the game of the year so far. Playing your nemesis in a key game, first of the series in their house, biggest crowd of the year in MLB (at least for an inning or two before they started leaving), extras, nail biting inning after inning where you can’t score despite chance after chance, awesome throw out at home by Puig, super Pen performance — 6 inning no hitter, and rookie Susac comes through. Great stuff, wipes away that 17-0 debacle game…

I’ll stop ragging on Blanco for at least a day. 😉
He had a very good game last night, even though he screwed up baserunning in that last inning. The guy didn’t even look over at Flannery when steaming into second base, just had his head down assuming he was going to third. I forget that this guy should not be starting, he’s not a starter quality OFer, he’s only in there because Pagan and Morse are gone. I wouldn’t be so hard on him if he wouldn’t disappear at the plate for weeks and weeks at a time, and has never used his speed and being in the LHB box to his advantage at the plate in terms of bunts and slapping the ball on the ground. As for no hits, Pence has cratered in September, not just Panda. Pence is something like 3 for his last 35….

    • Chipower9's avatar Chipower9 said, on September 23, 2014 at 11:13 am

Not a starter from a hitting perspective, but one of the best defensive OFers we have. He struggles at times, but is an important cog on this team, IMO.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on September 23, 2014 at 11:20 am

Blanco is an excellent defender and he has been hitting ever since the break- .301 BA .376 OBP .842 OPS
It’s well past time for the ragging on him to end.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on September 23, 2014 at 11:31 am

And Morse wasn’t going to reclaim LF when returned. At best he was going to get some starts against LHers. Bochy wanted Blanco out there for his defense *and* his offense. Fergawdsake Blanco has even out slugged Morse since the AS break.

      • Chipower9's avatar Chipower9 said, on September 23, 2014 at 12:24 pm

Agree. Blanco, like most on this team are streaky hitters. The guy who has shown the most consistency IMO, is Pence, and even he has had his spells (beginning of the year he was awful for about a month).

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 23, 2014 at 2:10 pm

I don’t like Morse in LF. No speed, below average glove, obviously streaky and injury prone.
      Siyonara after this season.
Blanco is too streaky for me, as Chi notes. Yes, great glove. If we have to, keep him as 5th OFer.

Strickland definitely looks like the closer apparent, should he have a good ST in that role. Agree with Chi, Affeldt and Lopez look locked in due to money matters.

I read where the Giants needed to bring Gary Brown up because otherwise, by rule, he would be available to be claimed in the Rule 5 draft this offseason. That doesn’t make too much sense, because I thought if you pick up a Rule 5 player, he has to stay on your MLB 25 man roster for some period in the next season. Why would anybody want that, the kid hasn’t played in MLB? So, I don’t know the details on all that, but I guess they want to keep him as some kind of trade bait. I don’t see him as having any future in this organization if he can’t find a way to play now with the OF in shambles. I doubt he would butcher playing LF like Dominguez did last night…

    • wswins's avatar wswins said, on September 23, 2014 at 11:37 am

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 23, 2014 at 11:41 am

OK, I guess they don’t want Brown to get basically a free tryout with another club. Still, I don’t see how he’d be attractive for a club to take under Rule 5, that would be taking a real flyer…

    • Chipower9's avatar Chipower9 said, on September 23, 2014 at 11:56 am

Dominguez was in there, I believe, for his potential pop. Plus is he plays a lot of positions and has power. The downside: we saw some of it last night on the play he butchered, and he Ks a lot.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 23, 2014 at 12:14 pm

O man, another Gary Brown post. Just my take man, but this guy is like #39 and a half on 40 man roster.
Over the years my guess is there have been multiple reports from scouts, coaches, mgrs. and advisers who have let Sabes and Boch know exactly what they think of this guy…which likely says he still has a ways to go to ever contribute much at mlb level. In short, Mr. Irrelevant, esp for post season.

Now as to pitching staff, rotation…that should be interesting.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 23, 2014 at 12:22 pm

Well, it’s obvious he’s about 39.5 on the 40 man. But, he’s been called up, he’s in the dugout, and there are 2 starting OFers hurt, out for the year probably, so he’s worth some discussion of why he’s here, and why he doesn’t play over a guy like Dominguez who butchered LF last night, and Perez. So far, Brown is nothing but a prop for Pence to rub his head and stomach for a good luck charm. I would like to see him for myself for at least for a couple more ABs or stint in the OF, to see how bad he supposedly is. Apparently another in a long line of whiffs by the Giants in drafting OFers…

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 23, 2014 at 12:39 pm

OK, but every team does this.
A’s dealt off Tyson Ross in 2012, currently an AS for Pads, for IF Andy Parrino and a C. In 2 yrs with Oaktown, mostly in minors, he’s under Mendoza line. This year 46 ABs, .152 with slash line .216/.283./498.
With how badly Beane’s middle IF has sucked, they figure this guy isn’t much help…to Punto Collaspo and Sogard. And they whiffed big time on Ross, obviously.
If all Brown ever does on a ml field is shag balls during BP, so be it.

Various sources reported that Dunston and Romo got into a pre-game obscenity laden shouting match yesterday at the ballpark. Bochy had to clear all the other players out of the clubhouse and settle it inside. I haven’t read anything about why those two would tussle. There has been some smoke in some reports on the web that Romo has copped a ‘tude after becoming closer. Maybe he’s let it be known he’s not happy he’s back in the set up role? That kind of stuff never happens in a Bochy clubhouse, or if it does, it’s under wraps. All I know is Romo had the best looking slider last night that I’ve seen him have in quite a while. Low and biting and unhittable. Maybe he and Dunston should mix it up every pre-game. Just another reason why he’s not coming back, IMO…

Twin…I’ll post it here cause your original comment is way up there. If Morse was 100% healthy, he’d be in LF. Of course “if” is the key word. It also applies to Pagan in CF. In short Blanco is out there ’cause neither one of those guys are.

  32. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 23, 2014 at 3:18 pm

Well, Dunston came close to being a forever-remembered hero for the Giants. He hit a 2-run HR in the infamous Game 6 of the ’02 World Series, helping the Giants get to a 5-0 lead in that game.
He was the DH in that game, batting 9th, which is pretty funny.
And we all know how that one turned out.
Winning 2 World Series since then has completely erased the sting for me from that Series, though.

  33. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 23, 2014 at 3:33 pm

As a believer in team chemistry, I would say that a team with good team chemistry isn’t necessarily all sunshine and lollipops all the time. I think an essential thing is respect for the manager. So, when an incident does happen, and the manager steps in and mediates, the incident is OVER. And I think that happens with the Giants, because their respect for Bochy is immense.
In comparison, Donnie 2x was quoted in my local newspaper this morning bemoaning the disruptions the Dodgers have had behind closed doors, and sometimes not behind closed doors, but right in the dugout. He said an interesting thing. He said the incidences have gotten “tedious, ” which makes it sound like there’s a lot of them. No doubt Ethier is pouting, big-time, and Kemp and Puig have had issues with each other. Their lack of communication even showed up on the field last night, leading to a Giants run, which proved to be big.
Not to say the Dodgers can’t win the World Series, but there’s little synergy with the Dodgers. They don’t get more than the sum of their parts. They get just exactly the sum of their parts. Those parts are mostly good, though, so that does still give them a chance.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 23, 2014 at 3:38 pm

Well said. The Puig/Kemp thing is pretty amusing. Looked to me last night like Adrian Gonzalez was jawing in the dugout last night about something — on and on, and was fairly animated. There’s good disruption in a clubhouse, like the early 70s A’s, and then there is disruptive disruption, which the Doghairs situation seems to be. Donny 2X should be good at handling it, coming from the Yanks, I think he served under Billy Martin a few times, and certainly the Steinbrenner sideshow….

There are too many players making big coin on the Dodgers and not enough positions to go around. Couple that with a few “up and comers” and utility players such as Joc Pederson, Justin Turner, Juan Uribe and Alex Guerrero who have performed well – then you have a situation where imbeciles like Kemp and Ethier, who are past their “use by date” thinking they are owed something. Throw in the prima donna Puig and yeah, you have trouble in LALA land. Team infighting will heighten if ANYTHING goes wrong in the playoffs. God forbid they don’t make it to the World Series . . . I bet you see a lot of changes next year.

So here’s a fun ditty: the Giants are boycotting a beat reporter believed to be Andrew Baggerly. If he shows up, they bail on the interview. Apparently, the players are mad that he reported the Romo- Dunston dust up
WTF is wrong with our team? The beat guys (I still love that term) treat these chumps with kid gloves compared to New York and LA. They can’t fucking handle a beat guy reporting a simple disagreement in public view? God, these dudes need to get over themselves. Baggs is the best beat guy of them all.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 23, 2014 at 6:30 pm

That’s total bs. What is he supposed to report- they cleared the clubhouse to clean the carpets? This is on Bochy and Sabean to fix. You have to let the media do it’s job…

    • Alleykat's avatar Alleykat said, on September 23, 2014 at 7:22 pm

You know these “Beat Guys” which is a great term cause they really do get beat up by all teams they cover. Coaches give them squat in interviews along with players as well, being forewarned not to say shit, it’s a freakin thankless job with mostly no satisfaction.
Watching the same BS after games rather its Bochy or Harbaugh especially after a loss, the exasperated looks on both, the questions always a long pause between reporters, and coaches or managers, then they say something dumb, are occasionally something intelligent, which then catches the coach or manager off guard and they blow em off anyway!!
