A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

House Money

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 12, 2014

The Giants are making it rain on me. Seriously, how much more house money could we be playing with? We showed up in the NLCS series with very little expectation and a wheel barrel full of house money. I asked the baseball Gods for but a single win out of these first two games. We won Game 1. Boom. More house money.

I would like to take all of this house money and slide it *under the table* to MadBum to thank him for his epic pitching skills. He’s simply become the best, most reliable playoff pitcher in the history of the franchise. Overstatement? Prove me wrong.

Today is a very busy day but I will sit down at 5:07pm ready and focused. See you guys then.

Can’t prove ya wrong. I was thinking back to 2010 last night. Everyone thought hmm, this Bumgarner kid is pretty good but Lincecum, Cain. Then 2012. Wow, Bumgarner, pretty awesome but Cain. Now 2014 and sweet Jebus. Bumgarner is carrying this club one filthy snot rocketed victory at a time. This guy is for the ages.

Thanks so much for your ongoing labor of love in putting out this blog, day after day and right on through the year. Kudos.

Are we in their heads yet? Lance Lynn is gonna hafta pitch the game of his career today to keep the Cardinals in this thing. Take a look back at the Redturds defense yesterday. Gift after gift from a usually reliable defense ~ and in their own yard. Giants seem to have developed something like a postseason magical mystery tour where their opponents get caught up in and by the mystique.,

What is it, something like 27+ innings of shutout ball on the road in the playoffs? That’s beyond house money, that’s owning the other guy’s house. I hope to hell Bum’s arm stays strong the next 7 or 8 years. He’s already our Andy Pettite, and could eclipse the guy in playoff appearances if Sabean does his job…

Lance Lynn, I believe, started for the Cards in that Zito game for the ages in 2012. And, he threw that ball to second that hit the bag and dribbled out into center that set up a big inning for the Gmen. I’m hoping he brings a similar disastrous vibe to the Cards today…

Lovin’ it that the Cards are steamin’ about that non-called balk last night. Let them stew about nothing, and meanwhile they’ll boot a grounder or two again and swing at Peavy sliders in the dirt, and help out the Giants win another one…

Giants are fortunate Wainright isn’t right. But, then again the Cards are fortunate Pagan’s disc is MIA.
The more I hear these East Coast pundits focus on the Cards whether they win or look silly losing, the more I’m convinced it’s mainly because they just don’t know the Giants, They don’t see them much, don’t pay attention to them until post-season. You can’t talk intelligently about somebody you don’t know. So, you focus on the team you do know…

Bochy can play some 3-D chess as a manager, but when it comes to the #1 spot in the batting order, he’s decidedly old-school. He has his image of how a lead-off hitter is supposed to physically look, and that’s that.
At the height of his career, Youkilis sometimes batted lead-off for the Red Sox. But Bochy would find batting Belt lead-off to be laughable, probably, even though a case could be made for trying it. Which is ironic, because Bochy is Sabermetric in his (mostly) disdain for steals and bunts. Yet, he can’t get outside the box on the lead-off hitter situation, where OBP rules. It shouldn’t have taken him so long to put Pence there in the middle of the season, and now, either Pence, Belt, or someone else would be a nice change from Blanco for a game or two. Or maybe Panik at #1, Belt at #2.
Or, how about this: if Bochy must put Blanco as the lead-off hitter, make him the lead-off hitter, but skip his first AB, to limit his ABs.
i.e. bat him 9th, behind the pitcher.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on October 12, 2014 at 2:12 pm

Just because he’s had a poor postseason is not justification for the endless trashing of a very valuable player. And he’ll be here next year so get used to him.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on October 12, 2014 at 2:14 pm

I don’t consider it to be trashing him. I just think Bochy bats him lead-off too much. My criticism was more for Bochy on that.

      • dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on October 12, 2014 at 2:24 pm

I think that’s a fair criticism but I also think there is something to be said for the players knowing what to expect (for the most part) at this point of the season. Even though Blanco didn’t get a hit last night he still contributed to the runs scored in the 2nd inning by reaching base.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 12, 2014 at 2:35 pm

Facts are facts. Call it trashing if you will. He’s a good defender. He’s a terribly spotty offensive player, thrust into a starting role he’s horribly unqualified to play. Not his fault, other than he refuses to use his speed to try to get on base. He is what he is…

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on October 12, 2014 at 2:47 pm

He *created * the error because he hit the ball so hard. He also made a couple of pretty tough catches look easy. Sure he has his faults but as a 4th OFer basically being full time for 2 years in a row, he’s done a darn job . Fergawdsake, he actually had a better *slugging* line than Morse, after the break.
As a little side note, who had the worst BA on fly balls: Pagan, Span (tied for most hits in NL), or Blanco (roundly criticized for *trying* to hit fly balls).
Worst: Pagan. Next worst: Span. Best BA- Blanco. And Gregor was just 9 for 98. The point being that Blanco is not an anomaly- it’s COMMON among hitters of a type.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on October 12, 2014 at 2:55 pm

Facts are facts: Since after the break (mid-Julyt to 9-30) .296 BA .362 .365 OBP .449 Slg Pct. .814 OPS.
“thrust into a starting role he’s horribly unqualified to play.” That’s a ridiculously overblown and false statement.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 12, 2014 at 4:00 pm

Blanco is not qualified and is not a starting MLB OFer. True statement. If Pagan were healthy and Morse were healthy, he’s on the pine, where he should be, as a utility guy. BF called him idiotic the other day for not using his speed to get on base, for being a fly ball out guy, not a ground ball out guy. I won’t go that far. He’s a serviceable utility outfielder that goes on long tears of batting walkabout, like the 2 for 27 stretch he’s on now. The Giants are winning so far without much contribution from him at the plate, so whatever. I just hope next year somebody better takes his spot…

Harold Reynolds does a good job as an MLB Network pundit, IMO, but not as good being an analyst during a game. He seemed kind of all over the map last night. But once in a while, he had a good one. Like when he was talking about Bum’s toughness, Reynolds said “Bumgarner hit Puig with a pitch, and then Bumgarner said: “You want some of me?””
We Giants fans love that story.

    • dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on October 12, 2014 at 2:26 pm

I missed that but there was another point where he sort of challenged/questioned Verducci on whether or not Matheny should have pinch hit for Wainwright. I like the enthusiasm Reynolds brings.

  17. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on October 12, 2014 at 2:14 pm

Last night was presicely why we win and also why there’s no respect for the winning. It’s like ” sure, they can pitch but the Giants don’t win games, the other team loses”. There is some truth to that but it misses the mark. For one, good pitching isn’t a ” yeah, but”, or an after thought, it’s the core of the game. Secondly and this so important, IMO- Bochy doesn’t *create* pressure. There’s enough in any game, but Bochy doesn’t manufacture it- there’s a job to be done and his demeanor says “let’s do that job”, not we *must* do it. I loved his line about MadBum throwing away that attempt to get the runner at third. MadBum didn’t just throw it away, by jove, he threw it away “well”.Right there he’s taking the pressure off of Madison by not overreacting, just laughing at it and putting it behind. There’s a lot more but I think that the most important thing is that they are not afraid of the moment-and that comes down from Bochy, too. As somber as Bochy appears, he has created a loose crew- have you checked the dugout during those edge of your seat moments? You’ll see guys who are visibily *enjoying* it all. While we suffer the torture…

From the True Blue L.A. blog today. I found the Brooklyn aspect interesting:

I’m sitting in a Brooklyn coffee shop working on the final draft of my musical, and boomβ€”a guy walks in wearing a black n’ orange “2010 World Series Champs” jacket. And so of course, now I’m momentarily distracted with thoughts of Why? and How? and Oh, Clay… and so forth. In retrospect, the year ended with Game One. If they watched the game I watched, seeing Kershaw (the closest thing to a team leader we’ve got) so brokenhearted seemed to suck the life out of the players and the fanbase alike. Matt Kemp’s Game Two homer wasn’t really a series comeback, but a hint of better things to come in 2015. Hopefully.

But I digress. I’ve decided the best way to deal with my deflated expectations for the 2014 Post-Season is not to talk or think about baseball until next yearβ€”unless, of course, I see another jerk wearing a jerk jacket. I don’t think I’m alone when I say that the very thought of seeing a subpar Cardinals team or an even more subpar Giants team playing in yet another World Series makes me physically ill. Even the possibility of the Orioles or Royals beating them doesn’t fix that, especially because this year it seems like the more I want a team to win, the more they’re doomed to lose.

So it’s a total baseball blackout for me until it’s all over and 2014 is in the booksβ€”the exact same way I’ve gotten through many a National election. See you all in 2015, and thanks for the memories. No matter what, we’ll always have the No-Hitter.

  20. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on October 12, 2014 at 3:15 pm

For whatever reason, Blanco’s numbers at lead-off are far worse than his numbers batting lower in the order, if I remember correctly, from seeing that in a graphic on one of the Giants’ recent games.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on October 12, 2014 at 3:29 pm

His numbers are very poor leading off, it’s not possible to deny that. Bochy has never settled him in at another spot so his sample sizes are relatively small outside of the 1. But just an example, and I’ll just use PA and BA:
      1. 158 .213
      2. 31 .148
      5. 16 .455
      6. 74 .288
      7. 64 .259
      8. 61 .404

Obviously the guy can hit, just not in the 1. And it’s always been so. I don’t support batting him in the 1.

I don’t like ’em either, zum, but Bum just said something unintentionally funny about the Giants 2nd base situation before Panik took over:

“We had a lot of guys contributing, but not really”

  47. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on October 12, 2014 at 6:10 pm

Carpenter took a curtain call. Seriously? After hitting a solo HR to make it 1-0. A curtain call.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on October 12, 2014 at 6:38 pm

I would have been surprised. Bochy thinks ‘big picture.’ He’s going to possibly need Peavy for another start in this series, and possibly beyond. He wants Peavy to know he has full faith in him.

I’m gonna agree with Snarkk, here–as Reynolds pointed out might have been a good op for a bunt from blanco. right side of IF was way back, and Adams doesn’t look like a gazelle out there. Just dump one slowly down the line. Matty Alou was excellent bunter, used to do it all the time.
