A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Earning Your Knowing Dude Head Nod

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 21, 2014

Everyone here at The Flap is familiar with the “Knowing Dude Head Nod.” It’s an interaction that 2 strangers wearing the same Giants gear might have in passing on the street. It’s always done silently. A fist bump or high five may accompany it. The phrase itself was popularized by our own Ted-Spe after we won the 2010 World Series. And for true Giants fans, it wasn’t just something we did. It was something we had earned. You root for a team that’s lost for 50 years, and then they finally win? That’s earned. And there is no championship harder to win in all of sports than baseball. That’s not even arguable. In any given year, to win the World Series, you have to win significantly more games throughout the season and the playoffs than any other sport….

While I was doling out my coveted head nods this week to the worthy, I thought of what it must be like to be a Royals fan right now. They must be positively giddy. They don’t know what a knowing dude head nod is. Right now, they’re doing an “Excited Guy Hello!!!!!!” that includes vigorous waving. Make no mistake, they’re nodding. But there’s nothing cool or knowing about it. On closer inspection they aren’t really nodding, their whole body is shaking with excitement. Their face is locked in a perma-smile and their gaze is at least a thousand yards. Combine that with the brand spanking new merchandise they’re rockin’, and there just isn’t a single thing “knowing” or “dude-like” about them.

But that could change. If they win, they’ll finally “know.” They’ll chill the fuck out and an organic “knowing dude head nod” will begin to evolve in the fan base.

Now, I don’t think that’s going to happen. My guess is that Royals fans are gonna be bathed in their brand new baby blues while they helplessly watch us win our third world championship in the last five years. After that, the only blues left will be the ones they’re singing……..

And our nod just gets stronger. It’s gets more knowing. Enjoy the game tonight. This is our time….

Tale of the pitch count: 129 -177. That stat may be every bit as telling as the final score. Giants typify the NL’s emphasis on pitching. Few walks. Not many hits given up. Occasional gopher balls. Rarely blown out. Kansas City came into this series badly overmatched because of playing half their games in the relatively sloppily pitched AL Central. Seeing both the LaBumbos and Pads on a frequent basis Giants hitters are schooled in tough pitching.

Bumgarner-Lopez-Strickland. Kinda unfair in a way. Lopez was particularly stringent tonight, throwing only 9 pitches in his stingy eighth. Duffy got used up pretty heavy in his 3 IP, 59 pitch relief stint. Like for both Washington and St. Louis, game two in their own venue becomes pretty much a time of desperation as hitting in perhaps the most AL unfriendly of all NL parks for the next two or three games over the coming weekend without so much as a DH looms as a visit to one of the Painted Ladies doubling as a haunted mansion as we segue into Halloween Machine season. Adding insult to injury the Royals will find themselves as little blue and white dots cast in a sea of the colors of the season.

Will the Royal coach turn into a pumpkin? Tune in for the next installment tomorrow night.

by doscinco on Oct 21, 2014 | 7:57 PM up reply

they all suck and are painful

this year might be the worst of all though, because at least in 2010 I could say, well that was their first one, they’ve been starved forever and let em have it. the 2nd one sucked more because they’d already won and enough already. this year will suck the most, in part because i really thought it would be the Dodgers instead. :/ It’s just the worst.

    2010 was the worst
I did not know how to handle all that winning from the Giants. All my Giants fan friends were quick to remind me how much Andres fucking Torres was outplaying Matt Kemp that season. The future for the Dodgers was bleak, as well.. it was the season before Kershaw and Kemp’s breakout season and they were bankrupt. I was remember being slightly (depressed?) for few days.

Cool. My older 15 1/2 year old snarkette had a girlfriend over tonight for dinner. She’s a Giants fan, and plays catcher on a girls softball club team now, in Fall. Varsity on the girls team in Spring. She was diggin’ the Giants winning. Funny, and great kid. Had some kiwi fruit and cookies for dessert — she’d never had kiwi?!! Loved the kiwi. Her older sister got some kind of softball scholarship to Stanfoo. Even as a Cal guy, that sounds pretty dang good. When her Mom came to pick her up, when she got in the car I handed her a kiwi for the road. She laughed her butt off. I may have dropped a gall bladder, but these kids are keeping me young … 😉

It’s not surprising that we’re underdogs year after year. Bochy preps for the postseason from Day one. His patience pays off when the guys he stuck with come up big.None of the experts think of Blanco, Arias, Perez, Ishi- the game is all about the stars to much of the media whereas the postseason is won by a 25 man team, not 3 or 4 guys. Juan hasn’t done anything sexy- he’s just helped win games quietly. Ishi was a *little* louder but how big was it that Bochy trusted a 4 time castoff to start in the playoffs? This a team game and we’ve fielded the best team. and the best manager

You guys are all asleep (sans PaulinAsia and maybe Nipper), but I love reading these posts while the rest of you are in dreamland . . . Nice summary Twin – love the last sentence. Dream on Flappers . . . Undoubtedly, we will turn those dreams into another World Series win. 🙂

11:20pm Wed. night, Saigon: Just back from a friendly bar after a beer or two (me) and water or two (Steve) and looking forward to waking up at 7am again to catch the game. It really could still go different ways, but it’s so strongly feeling natural and inevitable….. as Joe (less than a) Buck said before, “And the Giants just keep rolling”…. Hmm, maybe Timmy is contributing in some small way afterall… rolling…. Anyway. There was talk on some blogs about Tim should’ve pitched the 9th. Nah…. IF he’s going to get in a game, it’s going to be at home, and probably at the unlosable end of a game that wraps up the championship…. that would be cool. Enjoy your day, FU, catch you here in about 8 hours….
