A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Earning Your Knowing Dude Head Nod

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 21, 2014

Everyone here at The Flap is familiar with the “Knowing Dude Head Nod.” It’s an interaction that 2 strangers wearing the same Giants gear might have in passing on the street. It’s always done silently. A fist bump or high five may accompany it. The phrase itself was popularized by our own Ted-Spe after we won the 2010 World Series. And for true Giants fans, it wasn’t just something we did. It was something we had earned. You root for a team that’s lost for 50 years, and then they finally win? That’s earned. And there is no championship harder to win in all of sports than baseball. That’s not even arguable. In any given year, to win the World Series, you have to win significantly more games throughout the season and the playoffs than any other sport….

While I was doling out my coveted head nods this week to the worthy, I thought of what it must be like to be a Royals fan right now. They must be positively giddy. They don’t know what a knowing dude head nod is. Right now, they’re doing an “Excited Guy Hello!!!!!!” that includes vigorous waving. Make no mistake, they’re nodding. But there’s nothing cool or knowing about it. On closer inspection they aren’t really nodding, their whole body is shaking with excitement. Their face is locked in a perma-smile and their gaze is at least a thousand yards. Combine that with the brand spanking new merchandise they’re rockin’, and there just isn’t a single thing “knowing” or “dude-like” about them.

But that could change. If they win, they’ll finally “know.” They’ll chill the fuck out and an organic “knowing dude head nod” will begin to evolve in the fan base.

Now, I don’t think that’s going to happen. My guess is that Royals fans are gonna be bathed in their brand new baby blues while they helplessly watch us win our third world championship in the last five years. After that, the only blues left will be the ones they’re singing……..

And our nod just gets stronger. It’s gets more knowing. Enjoy the game tonight. This is our time….

Let’s be honest, girls. I’m either too East Coast or perhaps too volatile or juvenile or whatchamacallit to do a Knowing Dude Head Nod (KDHN), especially silently. Except for the blue and the new (and the heart loyalty too obvious to name), I confess I’m more like that Royals fan you describe. But I’m okay with that.

Pawlie, from what I’ve read here, I think you are more the Knowing Dude Conversationalist Bomber (KDCB). When you see someone in Giants colors you approach and talk to them. Hell, I think you may end up with their home address and phone numbers most of the time.

I wish I stll lived in the Bay Area and had more chances to experience the knowing dude head nod, but where I live there are still enough Giants fans around that something akin to the head nod can be experienced. But here, you’re more apt to have a guy, after spotting me wearing my Giants cap, hang out the window of his vehicle and scream, “GIANTS!!,” than a knowing nod, but the general efffect is the same. GO GIANTS!

And in 2012, it was the heart-attack express, playing elimination game after elimination game, and then sweeping the vaunted Tigers, against whom the Giants had no chance. Er, right…

    Flappers,

I’m currently reveling in the positive attitude on this blog. I’ve watched quite a bit of the Royals this postseason and they look really tough; great pitching, speed and defense. But the Rangers and Tigers also looked tough on their way to the WS. Also, with the Giants winning it all in ’10 I’ve found my stress level is lower when the Giants are in the playoffs, due, I suspect, to my dream of the Giants winning the World Series before I die being fulfilled. Still, the sense of doom that was honed over years of disappointment still rears its ugly head now and again, so I’m trying to absorb all the confidence I see here. Thanks for that. And Go Giants.

It’s interesting (to me) how the Giants’ opponents in the World Series in ’02, ’10, ’12, and ’14 are all teams that I had no real previous emotional reaction to. They are teams that hadn’t won the World Series in a long time, or had never won it before. Sure, the Angels Series ended up with a lot of emotion because it continued the decades-long frustration of Giants fans, but the Angels were pretty much off my radar before that, and after the ’10 championship, the Angels have fallen off my radar again. But had the Giants met them in ’14, there would have been some residual emotion about them.
But, generally, the Giants have been meeting teams that exist relatively quietly in the middle of the nation, and it makes for low TV ratings for the Series, but that’s no big thing to me. I like having no residual emotion about the opponents. The World Series is stressful enough, without extra angst and emotion and media weirdness attached to it. That’s why I was one of those (maybe one of the few) that didn’t want to meet the A’s or Angels in the World Series, and didn’t want to meet the Dodgers in the playoffs. Well, the Dodgers’ Kershaw concerned me a lot, so that was a whole different issue.

Yeah, I had a ton of 2010 and 2012 stuff on my DVR, then when we moved in December, I went back to Dish Network (had been Comcast), and lost all of that. But I bought both of the 2010 and 2012 DVD packages that contains all of the post season games for each season. While I don’t bust them out that often, they are there anytime I want to watch, and that is money well spent!

What John said at 7:57. I’m always amazed at the confidence level here, especially from Flav, when the Giants get to the World Series, and then seeing it all come to fruition against another stunned and hapless American League foe. I’m the opposite, always waiting for the other cleat to drop. Maybe that kind of doomerism is an east coast thing. But I’ll say this: With two titles (and the accompanying swag) already in the bag, I’m a lot less stressful over this one, especially given the improbability of it all. Which sorta makes me nervous . . .

With THE DAY finally here, my mind has been skipping down memory lane. I remember Gail and I were in Pleasanton competing with our dogs, and I found a killer sports bar via the net (this was to watch what would ultimately be the clinching game against the Phillies). We went into the place…it was a sea of Orange and Black. Huge screens everywhere. During the 7th inning stretch, the bartender turned down the sound and queu’d Ashkon’s “Don’t Stop Believin'” anthem. The place went absolutely fucking nuts. And then when the final out was recorded (Howard looking at a called 3rd strike), I was jumping around hugging and high-fiving total strangers…it was an awesome night. I am ready to make those memories for 2014…

  22. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 21, 2014 at 10:09 am

Here’s how I look at this series: We got a win out of the way in 2010 so we proved we can do it (something the Royals can’t say). Then we beat a team in 2012 that was supposed to hand us our ass. We swept them. And no one from the Royals will remind anyone of Miggy Cabrera or V-Mart. So what are the Royals? Um, they’re fast? Ok. So they have 4 super fast guys. Two of them come off the bench (Dyson and Gore) and the other two can’t really hit (Escobar and Aoki). Power wise they are underwhelming. And while I appreciate their bullpen, let’s see them do it when the game is on the line in the world series.
I’ve never been so confident in winning something in my life.

Just read that Bumgarner and his wife are living with Hudson and his wife, because his lease just ran out. That would make an incredible reality show. Even though Huddy is from Bama, he and his wife seem to be a bit more refined than Big Country and his mama. Actually, I don’t totally disagree with him. This is our worst WS team of the 3. I don’t think either the GIants or the Royals are the best team in either league. But he missed a keen point: there is no dominant team this year. So while it’s arguable whether there are better teams than the Giants who have been eliminated one thing cannot be argued: there is no team in baseball that persevered more or who worked harder or who believed in each other more or who played together better as a true team than the Giants.
I’ll take that all day long and a ring over ‘The team who was perceived to be the best team in the regular season”. You can’t raise a flag like that. Too many words to fit on it.

      • pawliekokonuts's avatar pawliekokonuts said, on October 21, 2014 at 11:09 am

Precisely. It’s obvious neither team is the ‘best’ team. And I fully agree this is the ‘weakest’ team we’ve brought to the WS of all three. So what. It matters not. Besides, we have a long history of this. Cf. 1954.

Royals did lead the league in SBs, but were only 8-9th in runs scored and OB… they can’t steal first.
No one in their starting LU has an OPS of .800, and a few are under .700 (less than Blanco). Only guy who hit .300, Cain, had 5 HRs in 450 some ABs. They were dead last in HRs and bottom third in slugging.
Moustakas, who has been bombing HRs in playoffs, hit .212 during reg season.
Offensively, this team just doesn’t scare me.

    Pablo Sandoval (S)
    Hunter Pence (R)
    Brandon Belt (L)
    Mike Morse (R)

    B. Crawford (L)

Nothing surprising but hey now that I see it that is a deep lineup. 69 RBI in the regular season from our 9 hole hitter.

Great audio-clip of Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris; thanks WJ. Some of you might know that Emmylou is a huge baseball fan. Her favorite team is the Braves, but she follows the sport well, overall, too. The night I was at an Emmylou concert recently was the night of the Wild Card game vs. the Pirates. My wife and I saw Crawford’s grandslam in a pub-like restaurant before the concert, and then during the concert, Emmylou thanked the audience for coming, even though there was a playoff game tonight. Someone in the audience yelled out “The Giants won!” And there was a big roar in the crowd. Emmylou had a big smile. It wasn’t her team winning the game, but she just seemed happy to see people excited about baseball.
And having mentioned Crawford, I hope he does something special for the Giants tonight. As Stick would say it: “Crawford can be the stinger in the tail of the lineup tonight.”

I’m nervous about the game, but something that is a little calming is knowing that we don’t have to face Carpenter, Jay, and Wong. Those guys were like facing hitting-machines in that series. And Harper in that Nats series. Will any KC hitters have a series like that against the Giants? We’ll see. It’s possible, but that’s a high standard.

The biggest key for Bumgarner, as usual, IMO, is to have a clean first inning. It’s historically his most perilous inning. Get past the first inning OK, get into a groove, and go on and have a nice game.

    • DJLoo's avatar DJLoo said, on October 21, 2014 at 3:57 pm

It seems like they’ve been saying that about great starting pitchers for as long as I can remember.
Doesn’t anyone historically struggle in any other innings?

Another World Series is upon us … 3 in 5 years after none in my first 25 years of loving this team. Am I spoiled? Hell no. A ton of Giants’ fans waited longer than I did before 2010. I will never “expect” to win every year & I will never “act” like it. As fans, we have acted like we’ve “been there” even before we were there. Every success is appreciated every time. Win this for Flap Universe. Win this for yourselves. Win this for Bochy. Win this because you know how to win this. Win this for old Giants’ fans & young Giants’ fans. Win this for fans that never saw you win yet. Win this for fans that don’t know they are fans yet. Saddle the hell up … we’re burning it down! You know who said that.
