A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Give It To Me

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 28, 2014

God dammit. This post season finally got to me. I’ve spent each series trying to convince myself that I’m just happy to be here. I’ve kept my celebrations muted. I’ve avoided expectations. I’ve been more like “Painfully Awkward Rob Lowe” than the ebullient Big Flavor.

But with but one win to go, I can no longer keep this charade up. I want what is rightfully ours. I want another flag flying at the top of Flap Mountain.

And make no mistake about it, these championships are as much for us as they are the players. There is no flag without the fans. With each championship we bank, our identity gets stronger, our head nod gets tighter and the supernova burns its brightest yet.

Enjoy all of it, FU. Let’s go get our 3rd in Five….

I am certainly certifiably chest swelling proud of this team. From here at all in 2014 to all in for 3 in 5. yes, yes, yes.

I am also of the opine that Ventura can be hit. And why not tonight?
    Go Gigantes!

Biggest take away from last 2 for me is Giants have figured out how to beat their pen. Second one would be how everyone in LU has contributed, not just the big money (or about to be) guys. Third, Bochy vs. Yost, no contest.
SF has Peavey and Hudson if necessary tomorrow, both vets that know how to get guys out and a solid set of guys to back them up and finish off Royals. Plus they get an extra bat in the LU to score some runs.. We score, yada yada. it’s ova.

I made the same confession a few threads back. I too had been trying to play that card…and no effing way.

Each game I just find myself pacing and wringing my hands. It was apparent that this potential championship means as much to me as 2010 and 2012.

I am with you Flavor…I want what is RIGHTFULLY OURS!

    It IS OUR TIME.

    Tonight is THE NIGHT!

    * Two words: The Bench.
This had been a horrible bench for most of the year. Now here we are 1 win away from another title and SEVEN bench players have been key. I say 7 because White Shark and Ishi are essentially bench players thrust into starting roles. Morse- swinging like it’s April again. Arias, from sure out to almost sure hit. Even Susac with a big hit-in his only chance. Duffy- a 12 year old playing like a savvy vet. Guy looks like we should airlift him food. And maybe most of all- Juan. This is a kid who couldn’t buy a hit for 6 months Now he’s showing why Bochy was steadfast in sticking with him. Why he was the guy called up when many were clamoring for Gary Brown.Or Molly Brown. All he’s done is play great defense, get key hits, move some runners. And what a thrill and matter of pride it must be for Perez and Arias in particular. They surely knew that they had contributed little during the regular season, the postseason must as sweet as the finest chocolate , the redemption earned from staying ready even during the darkest of times. And a very special nod to the Beast, who suffered from a long slump and losing his job and yet his obvious and heartfelt joy at the exploits of the guys who took his job away became the epitome what this team is all about. I have critizised him-sometimes relentlessly- but he’s earned my respect as a true team guy- one of the group that became absolutely indispensable . MadBum is the undisputable postseason MVP but I’ll dub these role players “The Magficent Seven”…Bravo to every one of these players who have stood tall on the biggest stage that sport has to offer.

I thought about adding Petit but he’s not really a bench guy- I think that he might be the 2nd or 3rd MVP of the pitching staff, though.

Yeah, I was wondering when you were going to wake up from that “just glad to be here” zombie state… :-p Absolutely f-ing glad to be here, but rooting so hard that winning it all is all that counts at this point. This would be fairly devastating to lose these next 2. Best way to avoid that is win this game 6. Come out charging, take no prisoners, never let up. Although I must say, I was not overly pleased to read an article (sorry, can’t find the link now, I think it was on Yahoo) wherein Peavy was kind of yucking it up talking about how he’d love to join the Cubs next season, along with his buddy Jon Lester. Yo, dude…. focus. Sheesh….. First sign of Peavy giving it up, yank him, Bruce…..I’d say start Petit to really fuck with the Royals, but he’s been so key in his situations that it’s good to keep him where he is. Michael, spot on about the bench. These guys are kings in this battle against Royals. Bed time in Saigon, I’ll be waking up early for first pitch. Enjoy it all, FU….

Peavey was yucking it up doing press the day before his start in Game 2, too. And then he’s Mister Red-A## on the mound. I’ve given up trying to figure the guy out. I just hope he pitches really well tonight, as we all do. 🙂 He needs to get past Butler ok. Butler has something like a .430 career average against him, with a pretty good sample size, 40 ABs or something like that.

Fairly uncharacteristic for me, but I feel good about tonight’s game. Nervous, but good. With all the talk about the S.F. Giants failures in game 6’s of the past, I always think back to the 2010 NLCS, when the Giants had to go back to an absolute snake pit of a ballpark and try to finish off a good Phillies team. No, it wasn’t the World Series, but the pressure was every bit as great, and Juan Uribe’s late inning heroics washed away a lot of bad memories. And remember, that game started poorly for the G’s. Poorly enough that I now have less hair than I did before the game. 🙂

This team is stout of character and on a nice little roll right now. Mr. Peavy will have a choke chain of a leash around his neck tonight, so he either delivers the goods or the pen comes in to do its job. With Boch having all of his weapons at his disposal, including a ridiculously game Bum, I think they win it.

    Go Peavy. Go Giants.

I was thinking about Perez’s double (almost HR)…..man, he almost tore a chunk out of the wall with that. That ball was smoked, and the padding on the wall had to dig deep to absorb that blow.

Hopefully the series doesn’t end with the Royals winning from the Giants putting the ball right into the fielder’s glove. Don’t want 1962 memories of McCovey slamming it to Bobby Richardson (NYY). (Fun fact: Charles Schulz, creator of Peanuts, was a big Giants fan, and he created 2 World Series comics in December 1962 and January 1963. The more you know!)

Peavy’s track record in post season and at KC is poor. No getting around it. I hope he can get through 3 with no damage, 4 at the most. Anything better than that would be gravy, and tempting fate. I heard Bochy say something vague that IMO clearly meant that tonight Peavy is on a choke chain. He can be a red ass all he wants, but it’s time to perform, or get out of the way. So, as far as I’m concerned, Peavy is a Pen guy tonight, not a starter. At the first sign of trouble, he gone, and if he wants, keep heading to the Cubs. So, Petit at the ready at the drop of Bochy’s size 8 1/2 cap. Go Giants, let’s do this thing. Why the Fuck NOT?!!…

    • Chipower9's avatar Chipower9 said, on October 28, 2014 at 12:05 pm

Each situation is different, even if there is history there. Let’s Get It On and see what the hell happens. I feel pretty damned good about having Peavy on the bump tonight. Bochy has his full arsenal and will play this one like it is either a game 7 or the end of the world (us against the aliens).

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on October 28, 2014 at 12:08 pm

Past postseason work may not be very relevant. As to the choke chain- every guy except MadBum is on a short leash. Bochy may use the whole staff, Murphy, and Kim Hudson if need be.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 28, 2014 at 12:17 pm

Peavy pitched to past post season form in game #2. He needs to step it up tonight in a place he historically does poorly. Now or never. I don’t know if he’ll be back, but sounds from the blurbs quoted above that he’s into the Cubs. WTF would you say that stuff when you’re in the middle of a WS with another team? Goes to show these vet guys that have bounced around are largely mercenaries. They’ll go where the cash is, especially if they’ve already got a ring like he has…

With zum as my inspiration I’ve been perusing Royals blogs over the last 24 hours. There is a lot of ink about how the Royals have the Giants right where they want them. They play best with their backs to the wall, won’t have to face Bumgarner again so this thing is wrapped up…yada, yada, yada.

I find this interesting because starting with the game on Saturday it is the Giants that have played their best as the screws have tightened. I don’t know what to expect heading into the game tonight but I think of the core players Posey, Sandoval, Crawford, Pence, Blanco and yes Ishikawa. They’ve been here before, smell the chum in the water and will close this thing out.

Well, that’s the only thing to talk about in this LU. Pretty much expected, Bochy doesn’t like to upset the applecart. If the only thing we can really toss around is whether to start Ishi or Perez, well, it’s pretty much time to just play ball. I gotta say I’m more jazzed about this game, and a game 7 IF there is one, than a half dozen Niner Super Bowls. There is something about anticipating a tight WS game for all the marbles that IMO is just far more exciting than the BS surrounding a Super Bowl. Literally here every pitch counts. Every manager move will be dissected. To me, there’s nothing better in sports than this game tonight where it’s elimination time for one team, and your squad has a shot at the ring. And, IF there’s one tomorrow, it will be off the charts…

  30. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 28, 2014 at 12:44 pm

It’s a game like this where the guy making the big bank, Posey, needs to step up big at the plate. He homered down the LF line in game #4 at Detroit. I’m not calling for an HR, but a double or two with a few RBIs would be nice. And, BTW, hey Flannery, don’t send Posey home on anything less than a dead solid certain score…

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on October 28, 2014 at 1:02 pm

A big game from Posey tonight, in a Giants win, would stamp his Hall of Fame ticket, in my opinion. He would have 3 rings, an MVP, a Rookie of the Year, a batting title, and assuming he can continue as a solid player for another 7-8 years, some solid numbers overall. Some MLB Network pundits were debating whether he’s becoming the national face of baseball, with Jeter retiring.
BUT- he’s got to get ‘r done first. Tonight, hopefully. And if need be, tomorrow night. But we aren’t thinking tomorrow night. It needs to happen tonight!

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 28, 2014 at 1:11 pm

I’m thinking back on that grand slam he hit off Latos in the NLDS decider in Cincy in 2012. That was the backbreaker. Something along those lines, maybe not quite so dramatic, but effective, would be nice…

    • Chipower9's avatar Chipower9 said, on October 28, 2014 at 1:25 pm

Would love to see some of the big guns tee off, but I have no pre-conceived notions that anyone needs to step up to the plate. All that matters is that the Giants win the game. And if that is a shitload of singles from up and down the line-up, so be it.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 28, 2014 at 2:31 pm

IMO Posey needs to step it way up. And he deserves some heat for low production. 17 singles or whatever is good, but he’s not getting paid $168 million to be a singles hitter in the post season. If he is, then he should be earning less than 1/2 what he’s being paid. Panik has 2 doubles in post season, Posey nada. Panda has every right to ask why the Giants won’t pay him big coin, as he’s producing big time, and way better than Posey. Posey has 7 RBIs, Panda 5, Pence 8, Panik 8, Crawford 8, Belt 8.
Here’s the postseason OPS and runs scored so far:
        Pence: .875, 11
        Panda: .816, 10
        Belt: .758, 6
        Panik: .654, 7
        Posey: .617, 5
        Blanco, .508, 10

Maybe you guys knew this; I didn’t- back in the older times, they would burn a lime in a flame to cause a more intense light to shine on a certain actor in a certain scene in theater. Ah, no wonder I like reading history; you learn bizarre stuff like that.)

Madbum totally deserves the MVP for his awesome work this postseason, but if they go with Co MVP,s it has to be the Reverand, his “All out All the time Hustle” is just contagious with this team.
“Bet if anyone goes to his pad, there wouldn’t even be a chair in it, cause he can’t stand still for a moment”!!
The other night he hit a clearly foul chopper down toward Flannery, yet he was down the RF line running it out, Dude is all hustle, like Pete Rose use to do.

That’s not the way Bochy rolls in these World Series games. I thought for sure Eli “The Prez” would get a chance to catch the 9th inning when the Giants blew out the Rangers in the 8th inning of Game 2 in ’10, but no, Posey was still in there for the three outs.

A friend just sent me this

According to Andrew Baggarly and USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, Jake Peavy is pitching tonight with a bad right thumb. He hurt it trying to catch a foul ball in the dugout during game 3. Supposedly he’s throwing okay but he’ll be on a short leash tonight.

Also, Bumgarner is going to be sitting in the bullpen although Bochy continues to say that he’d likely only pitch to a batter or two if there was a critical situation in the game where he’d be needed.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 28, 2014 at 4:06 pm

Why would a starting P in the WS reach with his pitching hand for a foul ball hit into the dugout? Unless it was necessary to protect his face, that’s pretty dumb. Like trying to catch a falling knife with your pitching hand…
