A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Bum Garnered It

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 30, 2014

There’s a lot of chatter about the word “dynasty” going on right now and I honestly don’t get it or care about it. To me, a dynasty is 1 team of most all the same players who win at least 3 championships over a short period of time. And that isn’t what’s going on. Each of these 3 were gifted to us by different men in different ways. Having a few of the same players on this team who were on the last team or the team before that doesn’t make it a dynasty. To me. But feel free to debate the definition of the word. I’ll be busy raising a third flag in my soul and these absolutely fly forever. That’s not just some bullshit I say because it sounds good. It’s what’s up.

Besides the obvious contributions of one man, I still don’t understand how any of this happened. I’m just so thankful that it happened. When stuff like this happens, even if you’re a cynical, negative person, you start to realize that anything, truly, is possible.

I’m not going to the parade, I’m headed east on a 2 day vacation. Breeders Cup on Sat. World Series win last night. Still can’t type that without shaking my head and smiling…..

The biggest problem I have going right now is finding room on that > side of the blog for another World Series ring picture. Somehow, I’ll make space. 🙂 🙂 🙂

John – there were a number who stuck with them thick and thin…and you probably more so than others. I never gave up on this team either…it has been a magic year. I am so glad to have shared it with the best group of any sport’s fans in the universe. Flap Universe, that is!

Well I remember them saying the A’s were a dynasty in the late 80’s, yet they only won one World Series during that time. I have to think we are baseballs first dynasty since the Yankees of the late 90’s-2000. Which was one of baseballs great dynasty’s of all time.

I really enjoyed some of the MLB network interviews with the players. Kevin Millar who played college ball down the road at Lamar University was ribbing Bumgarner about his country ways. I am sure they will replay it all day, if you missed it.

Each team has been so different I don’t see how the definition of dynasty (like big red machine say) can qualify. But this one, talk about *warts and all*, was unbelievable. And half a dozen of them could be gone by ST.

After all the basking is done (which will be months for me) Sabes has a lot of questions to answer about next year, most of which we have debated here for weeks/months on end.

LF (Morse Blanco Ishi???), 3b (what is the first offer to Sandoval), SPs (Petit in or out, Peavey), pen (Romo as FA), where Lincecum fits in plans—those are just the larger ones, no pun intended. Posey moving around I don’t see, yet.

I saw a new stat on IF defense about Panik on cbs site during game—he had highest pct. of DPs completed where he was either pivot or started it of all 2b in league, something like 80% of chances converted.

I have a feeling the guy from Cards blog saw this coming.

And before you guys storm James’ house, remember he said months ago that SF was likely one SP short, and very recently that the P is most important guy on the field.

Been fun and most enjoyable reading everyone here through all the ups and downs.

I got a pretty good hangover going and wife vacuuming killing my head. I agree that I don’t get or care about the dynasty argument. We are celebrating what the F-HEAD Dodgers never achieved…so who cares?

Call us what I did after 2012, the team of the decade. Good enough for me….oddly as my son and I were watching that game wind down, I thought to myself for the first time that I was sad to see this coming to an end. I wanted another game tonight. After 2010 and 2012 (maybe because they were so easy to win) I was just happy for the championship and could wait for spring training. This was the lesser of our 3 championship teams but I don’t want it to end…

    • Chipower9's avatar Chipower9 said, on October 30, 2014 at 9:01 am

I disagree on it being the lesser of the three. They all are distinctly different, and all are very special in their own ways. I have said this multiple times on previous threads…to me, the group epitomizes TEAM more than the others. I love each and every one of them for different reasons, but for some reason…I wanted (needed) this one more than the previous two…and no, I cannot explain why.

      • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on October 30, 2014 at 11:02 am

I agree Chi. This is the most remarkable of the three because they seemed to do it with less and in the most amazing of ways. Winning game 7 on the road after getting smoked in game 6? Wow. The Royals were a talented and game opponent, but in the end the collective will of the 2014 San Francisco Giants was too much for them to overcome.

Waking up the morning after the Giants win the World Series is a great feeling.

  8. dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on October 30, 2014 at 8:04 am

I don’t know about the dynasty talk but one could make a reasonable argument for it. Posey, Sandoval, Bumgarner, Lincecum, Lopez, Romo, Casilla, Affeldt were there for all three. Pence, Belt, Crawford, Blanco and Vogelsong were there for two of three. Honorable mention for Ishikawa whose HR in the NLCS is even bigger now in my opinion. I’m probably leaving someone out but in the modern game that is a pretty solid core staying together and winning.

    • Chipower9's avatar Chipower9 said, on October 30, 2014 at 8:58 am

Well, it is all subjective and personal, and I really don’t give a rat’s ass what anyone else thinks. Three In Five – in my book it is a fucking Dynasty.

      Bask on boys…

  9. dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on October 30, 2014 at 8:09 am

With Panik’s play at second, Blanco booting the ball and Perez recovering to hold Gordon at third and of course Bumgarner taking over for the lack of starting pitching the Giants overcame all of their supposed deficiencies last night (SP, 2b, LF, CF). What an amazing game. I still can’t believe it.

    Championship Blood.

  10. DJLoo's avatar DJLoo said, on October 30, 2014 at 8:12 am

Among the many things I still can’t grasp is that Gordon wasn’t rounding third when Perez mishandled the ball by the wall…

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 30, 2014 at 8:21 am

Looked like the coach had his hands up. I wondered too when Perez fumbled it if Gordon had a shot.

    • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on October 30, 2014 at 8:22 am

Loo, did you see Gordon slightly stumble going around 2nd? Once he did, he started to slow up. I can’t believe all the chatter, especially from Nats fans here, that he should have been sent. He would have been out by 10 feet…

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on October 30, 2014 at 8:35 am

Many articles I’ve read have said it was more like 15-20 feet. Also, look at the play Crawdad made – he short hopped the relay. Quite frankly, that play is as critical and as good (considering what was at stake) as the Panik play in my opinion.

      • Chipower9's avatar Chipower9 said, on October 30, 2014 at 8:56 am

Agree Steve on that play being as pivotal as the Panik-MudBug DP.

    • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on October 30, 2014 at 11:08 am

When Perez booted the ball at the wall I thought Gordon was going all the way. That would’ve been crushing, akin to 2002 Game 6. All I can think of is that with 2 outs the 3rd base coach didn’t want to risk making the 3rd out at home with a good hitter up next. Man that was a harrowing moment.

  11. wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on October 30, 2014 at 8:18 am

I posted this last night but it may have gotten lost in the scrum. FOX really stepped up their game with the many great camera angles. No way in hell does that miraculous Panik to Crawford double play get overturned if not for that incredible slow mo shot of the ball hitting Belts glove just before the runners foot hits the bag. That was the turning point of the game, IMO.

    • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on October 30, 2014 at 8:23 am

It was almost like the air came out of the Royals with that correct call. Then was fully expired when Bum came walking out of the bullpen…

    • dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on October 30, 2014 at 8:24 am

Agree with you, Joe. I found some of the stuff, like the distance run for a ball in the outfield, to be sort of lame but those slow mo shots are pretty good. They also came up with some good trivia there putting Bumgarner in the company of the all time greats. If they could figure out someone better than Erin Andrews and Ken Rosenthal they’d have a pretty good deal going.

    • Chipower9's avatar Chipower9 said, on October 30, 2014 at 8:55 am

Absolutely agree. The camera work was off the charts. Kudos to Fox. But I believe on that particular challenge, didn’t the runner slide head first, and the shot was of the ball hitting Belt’s glove right before the fingers of the runner? Regardless…truly a pivotal spot in the game. Wow!

  12. willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 30, 2014 at 8:24 am

On cbs site saw an interesting stat on Panik–he was tops in league for pct. of chances for DP converted where he was either pivot or started it, something like 80%. Hopefully he and Craw rival Thompson and Uribe.
Toss in Belt and Sandoval (hope he stays but that’s separate issue) and IF D is very good.

Sabes will have plenty of work to do once basking is over, about issues we’ve all discussed here for months:

LF–Morse Ishi Perez Blanco or bring in replacements
3b–what do you offer Sandoval, and what if he’s gone?
SPs–Peavey Petit in or out of rotation? Go after a pricey FA/trade for one?
Pen–Romo as FA what to do with Lincecum
Posey–I don’t see him moving yet, but how do you plan around it?

In the meantime, enjoyed reading posts here, all season. Bask on!

3b–what do you offer Sandoval? 5@$100M
SPs– I’m in the no Peavy camp.
Pen– Romo had some little publicized issues with SFPD recently. I think he’s gone. Lincecum gets a shot at the 5 spot
Posey– Susac gives him a true day off every 5th or Belt is part of a deal for SP?

And, that dustup with Dunston that got hushed up, whatever it was about. That doesn’t go over well with the Giants. I think Romo is gone…

Seeing where the ball was, and where Gordon was, it was a fairly iffy proposition to send Gordon. The throw would have likely beat him to the plate by a couple seconds, but anything could have happened.

As far as Romo goes, my daughter was somewhere near the altercation regarding Romo and the possibility he was hitting his girlfriend a few days ago while out partying in the City. The cops were called, and they apparently settled it w/o any arrests. A ‘misunderstanding.’

But there’s no way they don’t bring him back. I think it’s time for Peavy to go. It seems really apparent that Susac is going to need a lot more time behind the plate. Buster looked beat up. You draw up a contract that is identical to Pence’s (with the exception of the no trade clause). Then you have Pence take the contract to Pablo and have him say “Pablo. Here is a contract exactly like mine. 5 years. 90 mil. Take this and let’s go do it again, and again, and…

Seriously, how could Pablo turn that down (rhetorical question)…

So many ways to dissect things, that’s one of the things that makes the sport so great….I just read a thing that talked about the Aoki flair down the leftfield line that Perez caught. Incredible defensive placement. And the Giants seemed to excel on infield shifts more-so than most teams, or that’s the way it seemed anyway. So kudos to the Giants scouting and coaching.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 30, 2014 at 11:15 am

Good call. I heard this morning that apparently it was Roberto Kelly that waived Perez further over towards the LF line before that slap liner, so Perez was in perfect position to grab it. Plus, Ishi probably doesn’t get to it…

    • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on October 30, 2014 at 12:23 pm

Yeah, for a team that was supposed to be defensively inferior to the Royals, the Giants sure did make a lot of plays. The Panik play has to be one of the best in WS history, and Perez’ catch, combined with the excellent defensive placement, was huge as well. With Belt, Panik, Panda and Crawfish, the Giants have one hell of a defensive infield, as good as any, I say. Just rock solid the entire postseason, when it counts the most.

    • wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on October 30, 2014 at 12:52 pm

Seems like there were a ton of plays last night and in this series where the defensive alignment was spot on. There was another hard line drive early in the game in which Perez barely had to move his feet. They had the shift on (can’t remember who the hitter was) and the ball was hit directly at Panda who was in perfect position. Amazing what these guys can learn from scouting reports these days.

In that photo you can see the emotion of both players, and especially Posey. As if Posey is saying “Thanks, man. You totally picked me up in this Series.” Hey, that’s what it’s all about . Some of us call it chemistry, others might call it something else. The Giants have a way of picking each other up. It means a lot, and it carries over from season to season. I really believe that part of it started back with Cain, and how he never threw his teammates under the bus when he was getting “cained” so much back in the ’06-’09 period. He set the tone. The teammates have each other’s backs. Of course, their baseball talent is a huge part, too. But the Dodgers have talent, and don’t win squat. Chemistry matters. 🙂

Panda may get more money elsewhere, and who among us would turn down an extra $30 million or whatever it might be from the RSox over what the Giants will offer? But, I think for his career it might be a mistake to move now. Unlikely he will be so loved by his new fanbase, and he might not like getting skewered for his foibles during the season. Because the fanbase loves it some Panda, this is a major franchise decision for Baer and the unknown billionaires in the teak-paneled Committee Room. Paying Timmeh so much for doing not a lot won’t be lost on Panda and his agents…

Are baseball fans superstitious much? Early in the series i opened up the B-section of the 9-5 NY Times and on the front sports page there’s a big write-up on the great season the KC Royals were having. Some years back i may have read it and promptly put the sheets into the firestarter burn box. No way, Jose. Superstitious, dontcha know. Left it right there on the dining table, occasionally covering parts of it with other chunks of newspaper, but never entirely. It’s still there this afternoon and maybe this evening i will finally read it.

Another superstition throughout the season is that when on the computer following Yahoo slightly delayed game coverage, i switch over to “Mail” whenever the other team is at bat. My one big shot during the day to catch up on the long litany of e.m.’s. Guess that one worked. Did not even tune in for the bottom of the 9th last night even with Bumgarner on the mound.

Yesterday afternoon, heading home from the laundromat with a load of freshened jeans, heavy shirts and sweats (winter comes early up these parts) the tapedeck on Pa’s old 91 F-150 happened to have my “Queen ” tape running. Sure enough. Get about 3 miles from home and “We are the Champions, Champions of the WORLD.” Took that as a sign.

    • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on October 30, 2014 at 12:31 pm

I’m not superstitious in any other area of my life, but when it comes to baseball I can’t help myself. What I’m wearing, even if I’m watching the game sometimes (you know, the ‘things always start to go wrong when I start watching’ schtick). I don’t know why, but it’s real.

I a leader)have been in the Panda camp all year and was trying to argue they should have offered the 5 year deal in the $75 mill range when he was scuffling. I am convinced now that after his incredible post-season he won’t be coming back. I am predicting the Red Sox just watched what he did (my favorite moment yesterday was in the pre – game seeing Panda go up to each teammate and giving words of support or encouragement or whatever he was trying to tell them – that is a leader) as a player and leader and they will go 7-8 year deal and upwards of $110 mill.

I love my Panda, but with the bad contracts still on payroll, Panda is not the type of player you can rationally argue will get over $110 mill as a Giant.

I would not be surprised to see an effort by the the Giants to land Cespedes if Panda ends up in Boston. Peavy is the guy that I would bring back because I think he is an innings Eater and I like his vet intensity. Voggy after his poor NL and WS I think is done as a Giant. I would like to see if they can talk Phil Hughes into a sensible 3 year deal to be the #3 pitcher and then we have a solid Bum – Cain – Hughes anchor to the rotation for the next 3 years. Cespedes only makes $10 mill next year and then they can decide if he is worth extending. Good bye to Mr. Morse in that scenario…

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 30, 2014 at 1:51 pm

Posey’s offensive power outage the last part of the season and in the playoffs prove the Giants have to have a Plan B for him. He’s good at catching, but it’s provably bad for his hitting. The guy’s swing looked like it was late, so he made up for it by swinging early sometimes, and rolling over to the left side. We didn’t see much power to RF, which is when he’s on. They’ve got to figure this out. He’s getting too much paycheck to disappear offensively late every season…

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 30, 2014 at 1:19 pm

Once several teams offer you around $100M, does it really matter to the decision whether there’s an extra $5M or $10M? Is every player a mercenary like Greinke, so you just go to whichever team offers a dollar more than the other? If the Giants offer $100M and the RSox offer $130M, I guess for Pablo that RSox offer will be hard to turn down. It would be for me. At some point though, where are you going to play your best, what conditions are the best for your sanity, and growth as a person and a player? If he leaves, I’ll be sad to see it. But, the Giants will move on, they’ll be OK, and so will we as fans…

He exchanged the possibility of being either injured and done or filthy rich as a free agent — for the guaranteed certainty, regardless of what he does, of being very rich. If he’s PO’d, he should be PO’d at his agent. I heard Huff tell the FM sports station that Bum asked Huff if he should sign the deal, and Huff told him no way, he was getting underpaid if his performance rocked like he thought it might. Bum signed it anyway. At least that’s what Huff said, for what that’s worth…

    • paulinasia's avatar paulinasia said, on October 30, 2014 at 7:37 pm

There was obviously *a chance*, but not sure how reasonable. I’m sure someone with scientific modeling software could run the numbers and create a graphic that would show different scenarios, but at that moment in time, the coach had to make a decision. I think he made the right one, likely based on a) Crawford’s arm strength and accuracy, which the coach had already witnessed, and b) Gordon looked completely gassed. Off the top of my head, I’d say that 95% of the time, Giants make that relay and tag perfectly fine, and Gordon would’ve been out by plenty. They could’ve chanced the other 5%, and wow, wouldn’t that have been amazing for them if it worked out. Personally, this coach is, afterall, human, and it possibly crossed his mind in an instant that if he sent Gordon and he was indeed out by a mile, he’d have to live with the wrath of Royals nation for the entire off-season. We’ll never know what would’ve happened.

Honestly, it’s a good thing the World Series has the maximum 7 games. Those two teams probably could’ve played another 20 games and neither team would’ve had a 2-game margin of victory. It was just time for the Giants to end it and claim their place in history.

After watching what they did to the A’s, I thought for sure they were going to win the whole thing. This was the team I wanted the least. They played loose and they had that us against the world we’re going to play for each other thing that we had in 2010. Each one has had its own challenges and been its own beast. The first one was so sweet because it had been so long. The second one because elimination was avoided so many times and having Zito redeem himself for all those years of mediocrity and worse was just a part of a tremendous ride. This one is sweet because if you look at this team, there is no way we should have won. Despite all the injuries, Buster disappearing offensively, and having only one good starting pitcher here we are again. Hoisting trophies and basking in the warm glow of success.
