A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Not Ready For a Title Defense

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on March 27, 2015

Serious question for Flap Universe: If you hadn’t paid any attention to ST what would you say if one of your buddies said, “Hey, the Giants are 19-6!”

You’d probably be pretty stoked. Maybe fire off a knowing dude head nod to the nearest stranger.

But then you remember that your buddy is dyslexic and the Giants were actually 6-19.

Now how would you feel?

For those wondering about Timmy’s game yesterday it was a lot like last year and the 2 years before that. Low velocity, no command, 7 k’s in 5 innings.

So there’s that……

Only saw bits and pieces, but TL continues to exasperate—shut down innings with loads of Ks, and then walks hits errors, both his own and behind him. When guys like Sogard are burning you, you gotta wonder–loss of focus or something more ominous, as in same old same old,
Blade’s take that he’s a “match up” guy, only really effective in limited situations, seems accurate, again.

Kinda ironic we’re talking about Giants pitchers continuing fielding woes the day after the Card’s blog link tho.
Those were funny (but with a trace of how could this happen again?) comments from him, thanking those who chimed in but hoping for different results should SF and STL meet once again in playoffs.

Lincecum, 5 innings, 3 earned runs- maybe that’s as good as it gets with Lincecum anymore. It seems likely he’ll be in the bullpen this season at some point, with Vogie taking the #5 spot.

      That’s reasonable for sure.

I never paid attention to spring training before, so why start now? Usually, not a harbinger of things to come.

Timmy is who he’s been the last few years. Always hope, but I knew his contract was dead money before the ink dried.

  6. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on March 27, 2015 at 8:05 am

Timmy? WTF, at least he is consistent.

I am with LJ. It’s fricking March…not tripping on anything at this point.

On the flip-side, I did catch a few innings of the game last night (missed Timmy), and just to hear the sounds of baseball…Kruk, Kuip, the crack of the bat, etc. it was all good…I actually enjoyed it.

I know our boys have not looked ready for prime time, but the season is long, and Sabes is scouring the dumpsters in every corner of the planet.

Time to play ball for keeps, IMO. 10 daze to go.

    10. Arias walks 10 times

    9. The Stickman gets indoor plumbing πŸ˜‰

    8. Renel gets recognition as a fine PA announcer

    7. Parch emerges and saves the season

    6. Merna fesses up- she thinks the ball dudes are hot

    5. World famous opera singer Enrico Palazzo sings the National Anthem on opening day

    4. Pablo apologizes and we all agree to forgive and forget

    3. The Marlins and Giants meet and Kuip pronounces Morse’s name right

    2. Blanco doesn’t hit enough fly balls

And the number 1 thing least likely thing to happen -Sabean sells at the deadline

On Flannery’s Facebook page , he posted a photo taken of him surfing recently. The dude couldn’t look more relaxed. You have to wonder how long Bochy will want to go through the grind each season, with so many great accomplishments already achieved.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on March 27, 2015 at 9:42 am

Just my take, but I think Bochy absolutely loves what he is doing. Dollars to donuts, Flannery would still be doing it too (if not for his vision/medical issues). Regardless, glad to hear Flan is enjoying himself.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on March 27, 2015 at 9:52 am

I think a big part of Flan’s decision was his desire to put more focus on his music, too. Regardless, will sure miss seeing him at 3rd this year.

I thought Lincecum was obviously in mid season form last night. The problem is that form includes boneheaded throws to 2b trying to get a DP that wasn’t there and obvious lapses in concentration with the walks. Clean baseball would have resulted in maybe 2 runs given up instead of 4. Whatever. Its still spring training, its still spring training, its still spring training.

I don’t even know what to make of Aoki. He got close to some balls defensively that other players wouldn’t but didn’t make the play. I guess he’ll be a net positive but who knows? Panik clocking in at .160 but he put the bat on the ball in on AB that I remember so maybe they start dropping for him under the bright lights when the games count.

It was good to see baseball again even if my social media feeds are full of A’s fans treating last night like a victory getting them to round 2 of the playoffs for the first time in years

I pay absolutely no attention to Spring Training. No radio, no highlights, no web, no TV—nothing. (Just a little Flap every now and then)
6-19 means nothing to me. For one thing, I’m simply not interested in baseball at this time of year. My sports body clock is all about hoops in March. Secondly, I think there are too many factors that make spring results worthless—-guys just working on things, the desert air, too many Randy Elliott and JR Phillips sightings over the years– to name a few.
I do have questions about this team and a losing regular season record this year would not absolutely shock me, but none of my concerns come from spring training results. I simply think the talent level we have ain’t that great. But, the beautiful thing about the Giants, and Bochy, and baseball in general is that often the Giants somehow collectively make it work and do great things, when on the surface I don’t think its possible.

  13. Alleykat's avatar Alleykat said, on March 27, 2015 at 11:36 am

    ST records don’t mean squat.
So no worries about the Giants.
We have Bochy.”In Bochy we Trust”
Hell I remember back in 2008 in Football, the Detriot Lions won all 4 of their pre-season games, the city was buzzing, everything good under coach Rod Marnelli(sp?) then they promptly went out and “Loss every frickin Game” to end up 0-16 yikes, which of course got him fired.
The kicker is,the GM Matt Millen, who is a doofus in football recognizing talent kept his job.Huh? Go figure..

Weird off season for me. I kind of shut baseball things down this winter, haven’t paid much attention this spring and I’m thinking more about Jazz Fest in New Orleans than the start of the season. Yet, here I am on the flap…

I think the Giants are on live TV again tonight, vs. the Dodgers, on the Bay Area NBC affiliate, and in the Northern Central Valley on Ch. 31.
Local affiliates, so that means Miller teamed with Krukow.

  16. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on March 27, 2015 at 1:01 pm

Boston might be a little concerned with Sandoval batting .194 so far in ST, but probably the bigger concern is that he still hasn’t fixed his issues batting right-handed. For a few years, there hasn’t been much lower body in his right-handed swing for some reason. He said fixing his right-handed swing was going to be a big point of emphasis for him in ST, and there’s no sign that it’s improved.

  17. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on March 27, 2015 at 1:09 pm

Looks like Joc Pederson has probably won the starting centerfield spot for the Dodgers, at least for a while. Ethier becomes a $20 million a year back-up outfielder again.

“we,” yeah right. I doubt that you’re a Giants fans. I’m guessing Dodger fan.

For this season, the Giants owe Lincecum $18 million.
The Dodgers still owe Ethier 3 years/$60 million or so.

  18. vogelsheiner's avatar vogelsheiner said, on March 27, 2015 at 3:12 pm

i’m a long time giants fan but try to be balanced. “we” have had our fair of bad contracts. if lincecum continues to suck, he will have been paid 75m for 4 years of suckitude.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on March 27, 2015 at 3:29 pm

3 World Series championships in 5 years. Do any Giants fans want to go back in time and change a single thing, and take their chances on how things turn out in that alternate universe? I doubt it. I wouldn’t even go back and change the Rowand contract and risk that alternate timeline.
Obviously, this is a big season for Lincecum regarding his baseball future.

And there’s no “balance” to your posts. I can’t remember a single positive thing you’ve posted about the Giants.
Tell us about being a Giants fan. What are some of your favorite memories of the Giants? Who have been some of your favorite players?

Spring trianing. You talking sprint training? Spring training. Spring TRAINING? (I’m channelling Allan Iverson). Shit don’t mean shit til it’s real.

Shit, I’m more interested in the freak show that the 49ers have turned in to.

For all the wailing about the retirements and defections, I think most of this would have happened anyway as far as the players go. The coaching staff? Meh. The offense was putrid. The defense should still be solid, provided they don’t get hurt. Their depth is now shallower, but they should be able to keep doing pretty well provided they do a decent job in the draft.

The question is was and will be the offense. The Geepster is an even bigger question mark. Don’t know if he’s going to wake up an offense that had weapons that they used badly. I got no answer for that. Getting a burner WR was VERY important. Using him effectively is another thing. Gore leaving is a non-issue. Boldin can step up and fill the vet presence role. Crabs can’t even find a fucking team. VD I’m sure is glad to be rid of Harbaugh, and Hyde is ready to go. Hunter will be back as well. Patton and Ellington should be able to do some things out of the slot, So the weapons are there.

Would like to see another TE and beefing up of both lines. As well as a couple new CBs. And an ILB. Or 2 . . .

Yeah, it was a ST game, but still very satisfying to beat the Dodgers 8-4. The Giants roughed up Greinke; and the Dodgers started their entire opening day lineup. The Giants started a minor leaguer on the mound, and had a few second-stringers in the starting lineup.

Cal state HS championship games are on today and I watched some last night.
SanDawg’s SD State Aztecs are getting best player from D-1 school champs Damien of LaVerne, Jeremy Hensley who led his team to the title with 20 and 10 yesterday.
Stanley Johnson, frosh sensation at U of A, won 4 titles at Mater Dei. His former team plays in late game Open Division vs. Bishop O’Dowd in rematch that features HS all world Oaktown kid Ivan Rabb vs. Michael Cage’s son, a 6-10 junior (and host of other top prospects).

Couple heavyweight battles tonight for rights to half of Final Four—Kentucky/ND and Wisconsin/Arizona.

Saw pretty good column from Baggs about 6 things Giants need to decide–nothing that hasn’t been talked about here, but decisions that will have to be made to finalize roster spots…i.e., pick one guy or the other.

For the 2nd straight year, Kentucky is getting one of Jersey’s top players — last year it was Towns, and this year it’s PG Isaiah Briscoe of Roselle Catholic. (It seems Calipari never really left Jersey after getting fired by the Nets in ’99). I saw Briscoe play a couple weeks ago against Bobby Hurley Sr.’s St. Anthony team that had a couple D1 recruits as well in what was the de facto NJ championship game. It probably wasn’t one of his better games, but Briscoe still showed flashes: the quick step-back for a 3, the lightning penetration and smooth dishes for layups. But Briscoe’s team won in what was a tense, close game throughout, and went on to capture the overall NJ championship last week.

Bochy sounded pretty amped on Heston. He has picked up some weight, is throwing harder and showing ML level confidence at this point in his 26 years. Ready for The Show. Sac-town’s Ace till July, perhaps? Susac has gotten over his health issues and was PERFORMING last night. Could Hector be part of a trade package maybe also including Machi? Twins desperately seeking relief help. Ditto, the Mutts. Twins seem to grow outfielders like corn and soybeans. Maybe something there?

In yet another sign of apocalypse, now basketball is going all in with sideline babes, college and pros, for men’s game halftime and post game interviews with players and coaches.
Cute blonde did the Louisville game interviews yesterday, Pac 12 has their own in same vein, and Dubs have the supremely annoying totally vacuous Roz. Killion had a puff piece on her yesterday, conveniently glossing over her non descript college career and her interviews aren’t any better.

@WillieD: Always appreciate your high school hoops nuggets.! Did not know about Hensley—great news. Also, as you may know, Michael Cage is an SDSU grad. If we could just get our alums like Cage and Eddie Gordon and Von Jacobson to send their kids to SDSU, we’d be playing this weekend!
FYI my JV team improved a bit this year, but still has a long way to go. On a sad note, we’re doing off-season open gym once a week and one of my main guys fractured his lower leg Thursday contesting a 3 point shot– literally 2 minutes before we were to end our session. He’s also a real good running back so the FB coach is not real pleased with me at the moment. Seriously…great kid from a tough background and I really hope he can bounce back from this.
