Baseball Musings
Just a couple of post-rain out thoughts before we play the Art Dealers again:
The Nats, who everyone predicted would win the NL pennant, have a worse record than we do. That’s hard to do. Matt Williams never caught on for me as a manager. I didn’t get that MOY thing. He always seemed like more of a guy to just keep the boat afloat—not a guy to sail you to the promised land. And now they come out of the gate 7-12? With that roster?
The Cardinals losing Waino is a big deal but they lost him in 2011 and still won the World Series so…..
Sherzer is spouting off about the NL needing to go to the DH. “Would you rather see me or Big Papi hit?” That’s a dude that doesn’t really get the game. I don’t know too many NL fans who want to see the DH come to the NL. Doesn’t that say a lot?
The Houston Astros and New York Mets are leading their divisions.
That is all.
I was at the game (no more then 75 feet behind home plate) when Randy Johnson was swinging the bat and injured himself. I think he pulled his left nut or somethin’ . . .
I thought RJ had 3 nuts – you will need to be more specific than ‘left’
I had been entertaining the thought that with the Mets, Astros and Sherpas leading the tables ‘it must be early in the season.’
P.S. the DH sucks, is not for me, keep the senior league DH free, viva strategy.
Thanks blade! Yea regarding pitchers, we all remember Casilla going down in colo trying to leg out a grounder. . .
But yeah, it’s Rae to see pitchers getting hurt batting. No reason to change ghat shit.
De nada Unca . . . Hey, I understand you and some friends are going to be at the Angels/Gmen game . . . Make sure you stop on by where we are sitting and/or see us before the game at the Public House . . . Beercan misses us. π
Nice to read about how vividly Paul recalls his first baseball game with his Dad and watching playoffs with him.
Sorry for your loss, Paul, but memories like that will stay with all of us.
Funny thing about LA is that while everyone expected their offense to suffer by losing Kemp and Hanley (both of whom are raking for new teams too), they are 2nd in the league for runs scored. Even with Puig out, Ethier has stepped in nicely, AGon leads league in runs scored rbis and HRs, and the Guerrero kid has 5 bombs already.
Ethier, with a chance to showcase value, has responded nicely. If LA does wind up dumping him off given their surfeit of OFs in a deal for relief help, he could bring decent haul…certainly better than Crawford and they might not have to dump off as much salary.
Dodgers injuries to Ryu and Jansen (plus Puig now) also very significant. I’m sure they feel same way Giants do, that once they get healthy things will be different.
Paul (in Asia) – I posted a couple of comments via FB, but once again…wishing you and yours blessings of peace and comfort due to the loss of your dad.
DH? In the National League?? FUCK THAT!!!
They can keep that sissy shit in the junior circuit if they care, but keep it out of the Senior Circuit.
And fuck the bumbinos of la la land, too! BEAT LA!
Paul, very sorry to hear of your loss. Take care man and safe travels home.
This article is from Friday and provides the latest (that I have seen, anyway) on Pence, Cainer, and Peavy.
http://m.giants.mlb.com/news/article/120303428/
For the Flappers attending Saturday’s game…looks like we will see Hudson on the bump.
Timmy vs. Anderson tonight. MadBum vs. Opie, Part Duex tomorrow, and Vogey vs. Grienke in the finale on Wednesday. Heston will pitch the opener of the Giant-anghole series.
BEAT LA – BEAT LA – BEAT LA!
I thought this a good read from CSNBA. Sorry if this has been shared already. I could see a platoon in the OF coming from a mile away, given the way Maxwell’s Silver Hammer has been coming down upon some heads. Once again, the Giants with multiple guys who can play multiple positions is giving Bochy some great line-up flexibility.

Scherzer’s just pissed because he hurt himself. He could’ve done that anywhere on the diamond.
Marichal was injured bunting in the ’62 WS.
Agree, Magnus, on Williams, Waino, Scherzer.
I just looked at Loo’s GAME CALLED clip from yesterday. It is a stunning gem, of simplicity, images, words, feelings. I love it. Thank you. Whose poem is it?? And is that really you, Loo, at 0:37, as a batboy? Wow. I enjoyed that clip a lot.
It was written by Grantland Rice, Pawlie. Apparently there are 2 versions:
http://www.baseball-almanac.com/poetry/po_call.shtml
I’m sure the youtube clip is from the HBO series that aired some years ago called “When It Was A Game”.
That’s where I became aware of it.
Just kidding about the bat boy, I guess…
I just checked it out, too. Very cool. Thanks for the share, Loo.
Glad you liked it. Love that last shot of Mays…
Thanks. Me too. The shot of Mantle is good too. Well, all of it.
Well, the older version, which is also the later version, by that I mean the non-Ruth version, is clearly better and was used in the clip.
Can you repeat that in English please?
So, the Angels traded Hamilton to the Rangers? I hope they get a semi load of Tums for him, because they’ll need it after eating that contract.
plus, they’re basically going to be paying him 60 mil+ to PLAY AGAINST THEM 19 times a year. Unreal. I hope he destroys them.
That is crazy.
1. Nori Aoki (L) LF
2. Joe Panik (L) 2B
3. Angel Pagan (S) CF
4. Buster Posey (R) 1B
5. Justin Maxwell (R) RF
6. Andrew Susac (R) C
7. Casey McGehee (R) 3B
8. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
9. Tim Lincecum (L) P
BEAT LA!
Beats me why Bochy keeps McGehee in the 7 hole and Crawford as #8. Switching would send a message and might actually help extend a rally.
Wainwright, torn Achilles, out 9-12 months.
Dodgers’ McCarthy, torn ligament in his elbow.
MadBum had a great quote. Paraphrasing, but he basically said that if AL pitchers had to hit they’d be a lot more polite. That Ventura bullshit was absurd in the other night
Game is on MLB network if that helps anyone…
Aoki may soon catch up to McG in the DP race.
Aoki or McG — it’s the DP guarantee!
What a caTch Maxwell!!!
I think Maxwell may push Aoki out when Pence comes back. dude is killing it.
Glad I missed the DP, BTW. FWIW.

Nice!
Maxwell starting to remind me of guys from glory days when Giants were a factory for OFs, mostly black or latin.
Maybe a little like this rarely mentioned dude who I loved:
Downtown, my man.
Yeah, what a cool player.
It’s a kind of torture watching Timmy pitch sometimes these days.
Sometimes he puts it together, but he never keeps it together for long anymore.
Wonder where he lands next year…
I have to admit, I’m ready for Timmy to go somewhere else next year. He had an awesome run with the Giants, but it needs to be over after this season.
These days? How about last 4 yrs?
It takes longer for some of us. π
There needs to be a reliever in there now. Bochy needs to end this.
The Giants are waiting comically long to get a reliever warmed up.
Is Kelly coaching 3rd for the Dodgers?
He is Zito II
I think I got a brief POTD last year for calling him Tim Zitsecum…
Very brief…
Lincecum’s final fastball velocity, several times, at the end of the 3d was 86 mph. Now in the 4th he’s hitting 90. wtf?
Fastball velocity all over the map, and location all over the map. Not a good combination.
I would pinch hit Sadaharu Oh for Aoki in this spot…
Slappy with the RBI single!
Disco Joe!
Panik is locked in well lately!
Hey, they got Anderson out of there. He had a pretty good curveball tonight.
So why the fuck didn’t Aoki score?
Kelly has that virtual block the runner move down, too.
How “ticked off” should Brett be, K&K? Enough to hope that the bullpen coughs up the lead?
Wow another line drive in the scorebook rbi for the AT. How did that not end the inning is what Anderson wants to know, and then Panik smokes one.
Giants might have LA right where they want them.
Time for Posey to come through.
If Buster hits one out can Kelly still hold him at third?
Haha, DJ. He would if he could. Crazy how Kelly still runs TO the base.
I think Uribe walks up to Ricky Ricardo music.
McGeehee should try something by Fred Mertz.
the carpenters. “we”ve only just begun”?
Everyone is giving Kelly shit 3 weeks into the job, but I remember a time during his early run when there were calls to get rid of Flannery.
There were calls to get rid of Bochy.
(Guilty)
Kontos is so MEDIOCRE. If he has a good outing, the next one is almost guaranteed to be lousy.
You know what, THIS was supposed to be the type of game that Petit came into, I thought. Down 4-3, in the middle innings, the perfect time to bring him in.
Petit is a secret weapon that must remain secret.
Man, I get all like this guy when Kontos comes into a close game:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BofddwtPBPw
The stats seem to say that Kontos is a good pitcher. So all my impressions are anecdotal.
May it be that one day they are data driven.
There’s always hope. π
So Petit is coming in to pitch the bottom of the 8th, down 5-3. I don’t get it.
Well, Dodger fans will be all cock-of-the-walk after this game. The Giants just need to win one game of this series, and that’s fine.
Getting to be the time to get out the new issue of National Geographic. There’s an interesting article about genetically modified bees in this issue.
Will Whole Foods sell the honey they produce?
Good question. The new Franken-bees will be less susceptible to mites, which harm the bees. And don’t get me started on mites.
A blah turd of a game tonight. And most of that’s on Timmy; he gave a blah turd of a performance.
