Sports Weekend

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 1, 2015

Angels are in town. Kinda bummed we didn’t get in on them paying our players to beat them the way Texas did. Between CJ Wilson, Pujols and Hamilton (who am I forgetting?) the Angels pick up some of the worst free agents available.

Pretty incredible weekend of sports lined up. What event are you most interested in? Giants baseball? The Derby? The Warriors? The Fight? It’s almost too much to consider….

I’m fired up about Giants baseball ( the only team I dislike more than the Angels are the Dodgers), Spurs-Clips Game 7 (I’m pulling for the The Clips, mainly cuz I think the Hack-a-Shaq strategy Spurs are using is so lame. The NBA must address this) and the Match Play golf at Harding Park. The fight doesn’t interest me.

    • Flavor said, on May 1, 2015 at 7:14 am

Pretty much with you on the fight. Five years ago I woulda had more interest. This feels like an end of the road retirement fund these 2 have cooked up for each other

  2. willedav said, on May 1, 2015 at 7:10 am

Clips would fall into most disliked category for me, so even tho Spurs would ultimately be a challenge for Dubs I’d love to see Chris Paul sent into gone fishing mode along with all his buddies.

Angles are a yawn except for Trout, but I can’t possibly make day games on Saturdays due to work, so Flap meet up is out. Too bad, such a cool group and should be nice warm day in the City. Props to Angels for spanking A’s again; they actually have worse record than Giants.

Hudson goes tomorrow. He doesn’t have much left in tank but knows what he wants to do out there. If lincecum actually had any clue this is the guy he should most emulate in terms of how he gets batters out.

Kid goes Friday. Funny but pitcher usually seems to have advantage in these situations until hitters have a chance to see them. So far he’s been real breath of fresh air.

As to the fight, Mayweather is a most unlikeable guy, but also crafty highly skilled defensive fighter and counter puncher with big reach advantage that will be deciding factor. I think he frustrates Pacquiao, lands more meaningful shots and likely cops a decision W.
Pac’s only hope imo is to turn into wide open slugfest and catch M in mid flurry with a KO blow. Of course that could just as easily happen to him if it goes that way.

  3. willedav said, on May 1, 2015 at 7:27 am

James makes a valid point about how bad Giants pitching is relative to ATT park factor, which decidedly favors pitching and works against hitters. Belt would certainly fall into this category imo—if he were in a more friendly yard for LH I’m sure his power numbers would look a lot better. He has said himself he is not a HR hitter but more of line drive guy. OK, so start spraying more of them around the yard already, esp vs. shift.

But it’s time for Giants, currently 4-6 at home, to turn park back into a place they dominate. Wasn’t that long ago nobody seemed to like coming here. With Angels Pads (whom Giants owe) and Marlins coming in for 10 it would be nice to go 7-3 and get back to .500 at least before next road trip.

    • blade3colorado said, on May 1, 2015 at 7:53 am

Willie, good point about these 3 series providing an early opportunity for the Giants to get back to .500 . . . Marlins and Padres are still playing under .500 ball; and, the Angels are exactly at .500

In my opinion, what this series DOES NOT provide is a “gauge” to determine where the Giants will play for the rest of the season. I feel it is still too early to assess their performance, e.g., pitchers are not fully stretched out; we are missing key players, such as Pence, Cain, and Peavy; and, because of the aforementioned – Giants have little or no rhythm. Most important in my mind, the Giants are only 4.5 games out of 1st. Check MLB standings and take a look at some other teams that have worse records (see the Brew crew, Rangers, Indians, and Phillies).

    • Carstie Clausen said, on May 1, 2015 at 8:22 am

WD: Perhaps you recall a couple, three years back when field management for the Giants was all in on CORRECTING Belt’s approach of taking a lot of pitches, drawing walks and slashing line drive singles and doubles. They wanted him to work more on his power-stroke. Wondering how that strategy is working with BB9 these days.

  4. unca_chuck said, on May 1, 2015 at 7:35 am

Going to the game SAturday and then going to a bar downtown to watch the fight. The cynic in me says paquiao wins to guarantee a rematch. If so, I think the outcome was predetermined.

Memphis is a tough dsfensive team but no one on their offense really scares me. Dubs in 5.

I hate the clips but I don’t want to run into he Spurs in the playoffs. They can look old and slow at times but they seem to have the Dubs number. Going to 7 is the best case I suppose.

    • Irish Kevin said, on May 1, 2015 at 9:12 am

That is the very reason the UFW(?) is taking over, there is no way to “fix” those fights. Even the women are better to watch than boxing!

I’ll probably miss all sporting events this weekend, but you know I’ll be able to keep up to date by checking in to the sports central right here on One Flap Down.

Yeah Chi, starting the drive back home Monday in the AM. Had us some fun and expect to have a bit more, but looking forward to getting home to the pets. Must be getting older.

Week or so ago saw a great pic commemorating 50 yr anniversary of Monty Python of a 50 ft parrot lying on it’s back in roadway in London, gratuitous comments about “lovely plumage”, etc.
Seeing pic of Rand Paul coming to bay area and the “avowed Socialist” Senator running for Prez, all could think of was the MP bit about contest show “Spot The Loony.”

Both philosophies have fine ideas that are completely unworkable in modern society, esp USA. Long time co-worker is from Finland and I hear about the country all the time. While the way they provide education health care, senior care, transit and other benefits for all is certainly admirable there is no way Americans (esp those with upper end $$$) would agree to that type of tax structure to support it.
Also there would be howls of protest if luxury goods like cars suddenly tripled in cost due value tax.
Jon Carroll of Chron had a column the other day that mentioned their system of traffic fines is related to ability to pay, and how some real estate baron that made $7 mil in a year got fined $50K for speeding. What would Larry Ellison say about that?

Note to anyone here who plays Fanduel. Do not play Flav or Blade. They are Sharks. They will take your money and run. At least Blade will. No way in hell am I going to play Flav anytime soon. 😉

So, I just confirmed a free parking space a block away (via my cuz) and will be arriving between 10am and 10:30am at the Phone Park. However, I have no idea where Red’s Java House is??? Sounds like we have this Flap crew meeting there – Eric, Chi, Zumiee, Unca (?), Ed, and snarkk. Grateful to snarkk for purchasing the tickets.

    • zumiee said, on May 1, 2015 at 9:41 am

It’s a little old building, not all that far north of the ballpark, right next to the Bay on the Bay walk. It’s kind of amazing it’s still there with all the newer buildings around.
I’ll try to get to SF early as I can, but it’s Saturday morning :), and I’ll be traveling an hour and half to get there, although I know Chi is traveling further, so I don’t really have that big of an excuse. 🙂 I’ll call you guys when I get to the big city.

    • chipower9 said, on May 1, 2015 at 10:20 am

Google Red’s Java House, Blade. If you were standing at the ballpark (or at MoMo’s across the street, looking at the park), and started walking to your left, it will be about 3-4 blocks down. Sits almost right under the Bay Bridge.

I plan to be at Red’s around 9:30 to get some breakfast and a bloody, and then off to the park (Public House for a brew).

Tomorrow, Flap Universe invades the phone park. WHOOP. Thanks again for scoring the tix, snarkk! You da man!

      • blade3colorado said, on May 1, 2015 at 10:27 am

Yeah, when I get there – I will do it on my smart phone.

During baseball season, Giants baseball is always priority one. Also into the Dubs-Griz match-up. Warriors should take this series. Not much interest in the Derby. I am not ordering the fight, but would love to see Paquiao beat the living dog shit out of Floyd (I cannot stand that cocksucker). Floyd will probably do his usual run around the ring and counter-punch. Manny’s only chance is to land a knock-out blow. Hoping…

Looking forward to meeting up with some of the other Flappers tomorrow, and meeting Edd and Eric for the first time. Should be a kick-ass day at the yard.

    GO GIANTS!

  12. unca_chuck said, on May 1, 2015 at 10:51 am

Not going to make breakfast at Reds’ but will get to the Public House around 12ish. Depends on the socal crew coming up.

Arrests today in the case of Freddie Gray’s death, officers charged with a “rough ride” killing. Gray’s hands and feet were shackled, but he wasn’t seat-belted in as law requires, and they bounced him around inside the van with sudden starts and stops and swerves. It’s incredibly sad and infuriating that stuff like this still happens. Theodore Dreiser wrote a 100 years ago about the practice of white policeman routinely dragging black suspects by their feet up or down stairs brutally.

    • Carstie Clausen said, on May 1, 2015 at 6:54 pm

From serve and protect to harass and intimidate, and that often from departments who see to it that potential recruits scoring higher than 100 on a basic IQ test are DQed from the force ~ DQ being disqualified. Much of the training is being done by ex military MPs with attitudes. Our entire policing and incarceration system in this country (starting with the very concept of “criminal” justice) and culminating with imprisonment for profit sticks in the craws of all fairminded Americans, not solely the Black and Latino communities.

  16. zumiee said, on May 1, 2015 at 12:55 pm

As positive as I am for the Warriors, there’s still a long journey ahead of them, the long gauntlet of the NBA playoffs. Can they sustain all the way through that? It’ll be interesting to see what happens.

  17. zumiee said, on May 1, 2015 at 1:01 pm

Homer Bailey to undergo TJ surgery. He joins the many.

  18. sandog said, on May 1, 2015 at 2:09 pm

As much as I hate to say it, I think the Kevin Love injury put the Warriors in the driver’s seat to win it all. I don’t see anyone beating them now.
Very envious you guys are meeting at Red’s—its my kind of place.

  19. Macdog said, on May 1, 2015 at 7:05 pm

    660 for A-Rod.

I actually like the orange tops, though I don’t like the black striping on the front. The orange-billed hats on the other hand, I’ve always detested. And I think having 2 orange-themed events per week is excessive.
Ditch the orange-billed hats completely, which does away with the Sunday silliness. Then go black caps on Orange Friday. That’s my game plan when I run the team.

    • djloo27 said, on May 1, 2015 at 7:35 pm

Whatever happened to the black uniforms they unveiled over the winter?
And how ugly are those red Angel tops?

  21. blade3colorado said, on May 1, 2015 at 7:34 pm

Envious of those sombreros. I need another one for my collection. I see anyone at the park tomorrow sporting one of those – I will definitely attempt to trade the Tshirt I get at the gate.

  22. James said, on May 1, 2015 at 7:35 pm

I’m not sure I’ve ever encountered an opposing line up with more players I’ve never heard of than the Angels’ tonight.

    • Carstie Clausen said, on May 1, 2015 at 7:37 pm

Precisely. One prize trout and a flock of fingerlings.

    • blade3colorado said, on May 1, 2015 at 7:41 pm

Keep your eye on Calhoun – one of the best young outfielders in the AL.

      • djloo27 said, on May 1, 2015 at 8:14 pm

Is he faster than Haystacks Calhoun?

  23. Carstie Clausen said, on May 1, 2015 at 7:36 pm

With the meat of their lineup the Lost Angels had Heston squirming a bit there in the first. But after trout the fishing isn’t quite as formidable for those Halos.

Gotta love Aoki in leadoff. I saw that coming back when he first boarded ship via Sabean’s pickup proclivity.
Doubles. Third via a productive out from Duffy and scores on another, the sac fly by Pagan. One run was certainly shaky vs the LaBumbos for Vogie, but Heston may make for a different outcome as he has shown considerable poise under pressure as a 26 y.o. rook. The manufactured run in the first sends a message.

  24. sandog said, on May 1, 2015 at 7:52 pm

Is it me, or does Heston throw a pitch that looks pretty similar to the Romo frisbee slider that many of us have had a love/hate relationship with over the years?

    • blade3colorado said, on May 1, 2015 at 8:04 pm

SD, I hate to say it because he is a Giant, but yeah, his stuff isn’t anything special IMO. Hitters will probably figure him out the 2nd time around in the league.

      • Macdog said, on May 1, 2015 at 8:13 pm

At least that won’t be a problem with the Angels.

      • sandog said, on May 1, 2015 at 8:37 pm

Agreed. That’s why I have him as a charter member of the Under Ten Gang. I’m glad we’ve got him though. If he does 8-11 and eats up some innings, that would be a nice contribution.

  25. djloo27 said, on May 1, 2015 at 7:53 pm

Scioscia looks like one of those Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons. I’d like to see him visit the mound airborne with his coaches holding the ropes…

    • sandog said, on May 1, 2015 at 8:07 pm

I did notice he has put on a few pounds. In the early 80’s, I was going to junior college is San Luis Obispo. We used to walk up to the gym a Cal Poly to play pick-up hoops, cutting through the locker room to get there. One time, we got in the locker room, and who is sitting there, but Scioscia and Tom Niedenfeuer. There was some kind of an event going on in the gym and they were the guest speakers–waiting in the locker room to be brought out. Obviously, hoops was out, but we did talk to those guys a bit and they were cool. Sciosc and I have both put on more than a few pounds since that encounter.

I hope San Dawg is right about the Love injury. I totally despise the bullying forward retard game Barkley’s relying on to dismiss the Warriors. Shooting the ball accurately from great distances is the essence of the game for me :-).

    • sandog said, on May 1, 2015 at 8:09 pm

If there is one thing that can make me root for the Warriors, it would be Barkley saying they can’t get it done. I do my best to never hear him speak.
…and I totally agree with your take on the essence of game.

Scioscia knows a CS when he sees one. It’s hard to hate the guy. Of all the retired catchers who’ve moved on in the game, the only one I can’t abide is Ray Fosse. Bochy, Brenly, Melvin, Matheny–not to mention Girardi and Torre and many others–all great in their second acts. The Disneyland Balloon Man takes a place somewhere between the middle and end of that line. Meanwhile, Ray Fosse will do a great job whining about why he wasn’t included.
