Monday
I think back to that late April evening at Chavez Latrine and it still makes me shudder. Even quiver. Bomb after bomb, launched into orbit off Voggy—to be forever tracked by NASA’s most powerful satellites……
And yet here with are, with yet another Voggy reclamation project that he performed on himself. Again.
As usual, it feels like he’s going to get blasted tonight.
But who knows? He’s been so good for 5 straight starts, I’m starting to believe in him again……
Yeah, I thought he was done after his first couple of starts this year, but I think he may be able to keep this mojo going. Let’s go VogelStrong!
I’m not extremely concerned about Pittsburgh’s offense. But they are throwing 3 nasty pitchers at us in this series. Now that we are into swoon month, it’s gonna be important to cut them off at the pass. That loss to the Braves yesterday hurt a bunch,. Hoping the guys have psychologically recovered and can somehow take two of three in this series. Personally, the hope is that we pull one chestnut outta the fire anyway. No way do i see SF getting a sweep in this series, what with the pitching matchup.
Posted this kind of late on the last thead, so not sure how many saw it.
Question – how comfortable are you with Casilla’s performance as our closer?
Current 2.82 ERA and 1.478 WHIP.
Splits (WHIP):
Last 7 days: 2.455
Last 14 days: 2.143
Last 28 days: 1.655
So it wasn’t just yesterday’s game that blew-up his WHIP.
I just have not been impressed with him. I do NOT get a sence when he comes in of “OK, we have this shit nailed down.”
Seriously, I would like to see a platoon of Casilla and Romo right now.
And I believe Strickland is closing before the end of the season (maybe not as the outright closer, but getting opportunities).
Thoughts?
…I’M THINKIN’ Strickland may need [or WE may need] to gain a bit more confidence in his secondary pitches, which are, from what we’ve seen stat-wise since the first of the year, much improved over last year… it’s always nice to have someone throwin’ 97 at the end of the game…
chi, I really like Casilla but he can go bad real quick. I tend to agree with you that Strickland will take over the role eventually. Probably by the end of July. Especially if he keeps stringing together good outings.
“I’m not extremely concerned about Pittsburgh’s offense.” Dunno about that Stix . . .
Harrison is slugging .515 and hitting .311 (52-for-167) against other below average right-handers in the last two years; Polanco is batting .299 in his last 77 AB’s against below average right-handers like Vogelsong in the last two years; McCutchen is slugging .630 against other righties who rely heavily on the cutter (as does Vogelsong); Walker is slugging .688 and hitting .438 (7-for-16) against Vogelsong in their last 16 head-to-head PA’s; Marte is slugging .496 and hitting .311 (82-for-264) against other below average right-handers in the last two years; and Alvarez is slugging .556 and hitting .333 (6-for-18) against righties who rely heavily on the cutter like Vogelsong in the last two years.
Me? Not worried, but as Flavor said – Voggy could really get lit up tonight. Great equalizer is the Phone park of course. Hopefully, any bombs stop short of the wall.
Blade: Hadn’t checked up on the Buccos lately except for the pitching. My info must have been a few weeks old on their offense.
if MLB (and NBA) are going to have financial relationships with FD and DK they should require that line ups get submitted early. At least earlier than they get submitted. It’s silly that I have to keep refreshing the rotowire website in the hopes that the Braves will get their line up in before FD line ups lock in the next 20 min. Their game starts at 6:40. Almost all of the 7pm+ line ups have already been submitted. And if they wait on submitting it due to concerns over whether a player can go or not they would be required to submit, in writing, the reasons their lineup was late. There is just WAY too much money on the line for teams to be casually submitting a LU whenever they want. And again, since there IS this new, growing financial partnership between mlb and DFS, I think this has to get addressed……
ok! Braves LU is up! We are gooooood to go baby! But my comments above still stand.
Completely agree. As I mentioned earlier, why the hell can’t they text and or email us alerts as soon as lineup changes affect our lineups. If I have to sit thru a 30 second add to find out that Josh Hamilton isn’t in the lineup (I got burned on that yesterday) so fucking be it.
When waiting for the other shoe to drop, it eventually does. Vogie is smoke and mirrors. Like Tom Tim if the if the Pitches are up, the numbers are crooked.
Casilla had earned leeway, but not McDeepee leeway.
To me, Casilla has earned a shit load of leeway. Romo? Do you guys remember how bad he got that Casilla got put back in the closer role? And I love Strickland, I’ve been the unwavering lone wolf on that cat. But not now. And I don’t have it in front of me, driving, but what is Casilla’s save % since he took back over the role?
And when I say “not now” I mean “not quite yet.” But Strick’s time is gonna come
Very underrated Zeppelin song. Sorry, Flav, I know you hate this shit…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fssblRRCgmg
Flav – you are “One” of the unwaivering lone wolves. I was supportive of him last year when he was giving up the long balls in the playoffs. I said the kid has the stuff…he just needs some time. I have always been supportive of the dude.
Led Zep is probably one of my top 3 bands . . . Consequently, I was crushed when I found out they “stole” or didn’t give proper attribution to various composers of their songs. Here is one site that says they stole 7 songs. I’ve seen other sites that says it’s more . . . Not certain about Your Time Is Gonna Come. I agree, a very underrated song.
http://www.musictimes.com/articles/6250/20140520/7-songs-other-than-stairway-to-heaven-that-led-zeppelin-stole.htm
Willie Dixon successfully sued their butts. Of course, Willie Dixon didn’t really write all the songs he wrote, as Yogi Berra might put it. A lot of his stuff was rearranged Delta blues, etc. But Willie Dixon made sure all the blues people involved in electrifying the blues got paid. Dixon was a boxer originally, big guy, worked for a while as Joe Louis’s sparring partner. Then he got smart.
The ironic thing is that Zep sued to stop this:
I”m not sure that’s ironic, but it was stupid. Those guys from Davis were great; that parody was great.
Yep, stupid is a lot more apt.
Loo, you can rock the best rock band ever anytime.
Had the pleasure to see them live 3 times and every show was awesome.
Kezar Stadium 1973 was one hell of a show. Opening act was “The Tubes” and they came out tossing pills and White Powder substance from the stage as they lead into their song “White Punks on Dope”!! It was a trip to say the least..
Anyone remember this?
Chi,
I’m more comfortable with Casilla then I ever was with Armando Beneitz(sp?) of course most flappers would agree on that one.
Casilla gets a little more rope, but the noose is tightening. And if Strickland continues with great control and gopher free ball, yes I can see a change toward the end of July maybe a deadline trade of the aging .
They could package Machi as well for all I care, the dude stinks!!
Watching the hapless Rockies against the Dodgers. Sheesh, Kendrick is their big free agent signing. Hello? Hello? Did I lose you? Where was I? Oh yeah, even Kershaw got a hit off of this gas can. Believe me, I only watch them because I usually have at least one DFS “stack” going against one of their pitchers. Right now, Ethier and Rollins have bombs. Plenty more to come . . .
“I’m more comfortable with Casilla then I ever was with Armando Beneitz(sp?)”
Isn’t that kinda like saying he was a much more pleasant fellow than that dude Stalin? 😉
Casilla is 34 for his last 38, including yesterday.
Should be a revealing series; both clubs have been hot as of late.
I catch ESPN radio now and then while driving around town. I’ll tell you what is sweet. Their promo, which plays this audio every hour or so locally at least: “And for the third time in five years the San Francisco Giants are World Champions.” Never gets old. How great it is going to be to hear: “And remarkably for the fourth time in six years the San Francisco Giants are the World Champions of baseball.”
We’re here at the game. Behind home plate a little to the left. Watching voggie warm up there’s no question I could hit him. I just don’t think my lucky whiffle bat would survive the experience.
Wiffle Ball. American-invented and American-made, still (Connecticut). Can’t say that for too many things.
Bucs have been trouble for the G’s..
Voggie looks tiny in person.
That’s what surprised me about all the players at my first game, in 1958, at Yankee Stadium, Whitey Ford vs. Billy Pierce.
Pierce sure was…
Forget about Whitey getting a gig as a bullpen catcher—it amazes me that Chris Stewart is still getting a players check in the big leagues. Good for him.
I mean, it’s nearly incomprehensible. At least El Presidente did something, even if was just hashtaggin’ his ass into wins. I also loved that bouncy fight weirdo thing he did in that game I can’t really remember.
It was the Shane Victorino incident…
protecting his pitcher, right? Catchers are valuable–although Stewart’s worthy for his D. What’s Hector worth?
had to look it up. Ramon Ramirez.
Forgot about him, Xoot.. Useful guy in 2010…
came over in one of those Neukom double deals–along with Javier Lopez, same day, different teams. something like that.
Aoki is now tied for 4th in stolen bases with an even dozen. Belt is also fourth ~in doubles~ with 16.
MLB.tv just showed Kevin Mitchell’s barehanded grab.
Pawlie,
That barehanded grab by Kevin Mitchell still amazes me today. To totally overrun a ball and reach back and still nonchalantly make that grab was sure special to watch, which I did ,watching that one at home on the boob tube..
Wow!
Hell of a play.
Pagan. Angelic play.
Made me think of Agee’s WS grab about 30 seconds in:
I love how Gowdy calls him “Tom” Agee. The only time in his career that he wasn’t called “Tommie”
It was the equivalent of saying “Will” Mays…
The right-center catch may’ve been better than the first. He kinda runs like Mays.
Thx. what a cool player he was.
Looks great in that Mets uni too.
Wondering whether Bochy will see fit to switch Pence and Belt in the lineup. The Reverend is currently batting .250 and hasn’t really locked in yet. He’s not a natural #3 anyway as he is the closest thing on the team to a hacker.
I would prefer the Bucs announcers not bring up 1971. How rude. We could mention 2014.
Strike 2 on Pagan was an awful call but how could he take strike 3 right down the middle with an 0-2 count?
Way to gun down Stewart at 3rd Buster!
Amazing he can even hit a double anyway..
G. Cole is a real jerk.
wasn’t he shagging Crawford’s sister?
That was the lighthearted storyline a couple of years ago.
they are still dating, according to Bucs announcers
Bochy leaving himself open for some second guessing here….
Get dem runs back, Giants.
I don’t quite understand how a guy who grew up in Newport Beach and who went to school at UCLA turns out like Garritt Cole. He acts like a guy from the piney woods who for some obscure reason owns a score to settle with rich folk from Calif. He is a rich folk from Calif.
Wasn’t Piney Woods Robert Deniro’s guitar playing back-up catcher in “Bang The Drum Slowly”?
fer crissakes, I think every hillbilly from some place south west of the Appalachians is from the piney woods.
Still in tshirt. Rocking the 2010 ws champs shirt. Freaking beautiful night at the park.
“Very underrated Zeppelin song.”
Anything off the first album is underrated, imo.
Let’s go….beat this surf punk.
Have they done something to curb the dangerous shattered bat epidemic of the past few years?
Haven’t noticed ’em much this season…
Make this guy toast Belt.
Miller on MLB radio is at least 15 seconds ahead of the TV broadcast.
Why is that?
Theory of relativity? Worm hole? String theory? Dunno . . .
MOTHERFUCKER!
Are you shitting me? Nada?
What a screwed up inning that turned out to be..Baseloaded no outs no runs , just cannot happen…
Well, they made Cole work a little and now a quick shut down inning to get him right back out there. Pagan needs to get on.
So much for that …
Aoki has his limits, but he’s damn good overall and he definitiely never gives up.
definitiVely . . . how do you get the rhythm and consonance right otherwise?
How the hell can Chris Stewart have 3 doubles?
He couldn’t hit out of a paper bag with us,,
After a Sunday game, while killing time to let the crowd thin out, I watched Chris Stewart run his toddler around the IF bases along with all the other kids from the stands. (My older son still has a plastic baggie of the IF dirt he scooped up when he made that run about age 5.) It was moving to see a Giants player, in his uni, out there with the other kids. Not earth shaking, but still — he struck me as a pretty good guy.
Funny thing is, according to Miller, he was the guy giants gave up to get Kontos.
not funny at all. catchers are valuable. stewart wound up starting for the yankers for a while.

Zumiee is prohibited from attending games for 30 days. 🙂
As good a bounce back year as Pagan is having, the XBH and SB are clearly missing…
I know after the catch that Pagan made that this is kind of fucked up, but man I found myself wishing that Morse was on deck when Crawford was up in the ninth. Sometimes I miss the Beast.
Morse was a one year plug; so is Aoki. Morse did his job; so far so has Aoki. What’s the beef?
No beef xoot. I don’t miss Morse in the OF but sometimes I do miss seeing him in the on deck circle, and that was one of those times. I haven’t complained about Aoki at all this year, so I’m not sure what that is about (both played LF I guess).
Speaking of Zepplin (nothing they did was underrated except for the entire Physical Grafitti album minus Kashmir) we saw Robert Plant in Napa at the Bottle Rock thing.
Total 70s flashback as he did about around 10 Led Zep songs among some of his newer stuff (Spoonful was very good). Very cool. He sang pretty damn well for how old he is.
He opened with the Wanton Song. How’s that for underrated?
I’d post the video I took at the show, but the sound is awful as we were up front and the bass blows everything out.
They did a great blues version of whole lotta love. I now they stole the Lemon Song from whoever wrote Killing Floor.
I dig Zeppelin too, though never saw them live. But yes, they did rip off plenty of songs. I have a 16-song CD devoted to just that: Led Astray — The folk and blues roots of Page & Plant.

The last three games….

That’s great Zum! Where do you find these?
To those who commented, thanks for the feedback on Casilla and our closing situation. I know his save rate has been good over the years, but I just am not digging him of late. He has not had the killer instict. The way his WHIP has balooned over the last month or so, I just would not be opposed to seeing Romo get some save opps. And I agree, Strickland will eventually be the man, but I don’t expect that to happen until at least July or August.
What a fucked-up game. The ump was anything BUT consistent. But ya can’t really hang this on him. Vogey had the melt-down inning, and the Giants had their chances with the bases juiced and could not score.
Erase, delete, rewind and go get ’em today!
Errors were pretty costly as well.
