A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Kenny Stabler

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 10, 2015

I am a 49er fan but as a kid I loved certain Raider players. I think I liked their names. “Casper”. “Branch”. “Guy.” And of course, “Stabler.” I’m left handed too and I remember fashioning my td throws after him to my buddies in the street outside my house. In hindsight, it’s weird I never became a Raider fan but 2 guys named Montana and Clark probably had something to do with that.

Anyway, I remember watching this play in my living room–probably my first memory of watching a football game at home. “Get yer big butt outta here….” RIP, Snake.

Giants game tonight. There’s nothing like baseball in terms of a shitty team being able to beat you on any given night. The pitcher has everything to do with that. Cole Hamels v MadBum and I wouldn’t want to have to try to be a hitter in this game……

Yeah same here. I never was a fan of the Raiders but the Snake, Freddie B and Cliff Branch were some of my favorite players. Ghost to the post, the holy roller, the team was always in the middle of it.

What’s maddening is this’ll be what gets Stabler into the HOF. He should be there.

Agree Chuck. The Snake is a Hall of Famer if there ever was one.

I third the motion. Snake belongs in the HOF.

I’m really sad to hear of Ken Stabler’s passing. I’m was in the same boat as you, Flavor, a Niners fan who couldn’t help but keep current on all those great Raiders teams of the ’70. The Snake will always be one of the great QB’s in the leagues history, a true big-game player and a real tough dude. And, of course, one of the great nicknames as well.

RIP Snake. You will be missed.

Such innovators in those days too—Stram and Don Coryell.
Rivalries were fierce too, seems everyone hated Raiders but Chiefs Chargers Broncos circled them on calendars.

OK, this is the Phils…who haven’t scored in 20 innings and are on pace to lose 112 games.
As long as they don’t trade Hamels to LA they can stay whole rest of the month here.

Great thread and video clip. I have mentioned before that I grew up in Oklahoma and was a Chiefs fan, but I always had a liking of the old Raider teams, even though the Chiefs were division rivals with the Raiders. As a kid, I assume many were like me and could give a shit about “division rivals.” I liked teams principally for their players, and Snake was one I always admired. Those old Raider teams were bad ass. Snake, Bilentnikoff (sp?), Casper, Otto, Hubbard, the Stork, Lester the Molester…they were a fun team to watch. RIP, Snake.

This June/July sucktitude mirrors last year pretty damned close. Given that we have rarely had a fully healthy team, I am not tripping that badly right now. The main concern, and difference this year as opposed to last, is that we had a bullpen that was pretty much lights-out. This year that piece of shit bullpen is one of my biggest concerns. I have NO confidence in Romo, Strickland, or Casilla. Affeldt and Machi have sucked. Lopez and Kontos have been the only steady hands. So, the bullpen must find its mojo (or Sabevans needs to go get the likes of Chapman).

And I still would love to see the Giants make a play on Parra. As mentioned before, the BrewCrew got him for a song (two prospects), so I doubt he would cost much. His remaining salary for the year is about 3 mil (chump change in this day and age), and he will be a FA next year. This is one of the few times that I would be down with a rental, IF the pieces we gave up were not top prospects, but I would prefer a sign-and-trade, so that we had Parra for a couple of more years (Pagan is not getting any younger, and we could jettison the dead-wood that is Maxwell).

Great pitching match-up, and as Flav said, no way in hell I would want to be a hitter in this game. But maybe the Orange and Black surprise us and t-off on Hamels. You can only hope.

Chi, if you’re going to make a trade, why not go all in and get Grilli and Maybin from Atlanta?
      Wish in one hand…
My guess is that the Giants will just forgo a trade right now and kick the tires on a Delmon Young or Cody Ross for the OF (I think both would only cost the league minimum) and maybe just bring Derek Law up for a try at some late inning relief.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 10, 2015 at 10:25 am

John – all I have read is that Parra is available and the Brew doesn’t expect much. On the flip-side, I have heard Atlanta is not shopping Maybin, and I think he would be much more pricey. I believe it was WillieD, not sure, had mentioned he would prefer they go out and get a RH power-bat. Not sure there are many of those available via trade, and again, the cost would probably be prohibitive. I also do not think the Giants need a power bat. I like Parra as he can play all OF positions, and he hits for average, and some power (he has 8 HRs this year). His 8 HRs tops all OFers on the Giants, unless you want to consider BB9 an OFer…he has 9. And the Giants have proven they do not need to hit the long ball to win. I just think Parra would be a piece they could get without giving up much, and he could spell Pagan, and again, they could jettison Maxwell.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 10, 2015 at 10:35 am

Also, while there is not much difference on where the Braves and Reds are in relation to the WC, Atlanta is in a better position than Cincy, and I think less likely to be sellers.

Chapman is a bit more expensive (he signed for 8.05 to avoid arb, and has one more year of arb next year). Grillis is making about 4 this year and is signed for 3.5 next, and the Braves have a 3 mil club option in 2017 (.25 mil buyout). Having him for that cheap is one more reason I don’t see the Braves dealing him.

      • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on July 10, 2015 at 1:37 pm

Sorry Chi, I have to disagree. I think Atlanta will be sellers (unless they get that Bull Pen in order, they ain’t going nowhere) and the two players I mentioned have been rumored to be available, but costly. That’s why I don’t think the Giants will be involved (although I think Grilli is on LA’s wish list, so that might come into play). I think the Giants will probably wait until after the deadline if they are buyers, unless a deal comes up that is insanely good, or doesn’t cost much. In the meantime I think they’ll go dumpster diving and look internally.
Also, I think Parra is probably on a few teams wish lists, so I think the Brewers will probably jack up the ante.
        Just my opinions.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 10, 2015 at 2:54 pm

Well, you must have seen some news I did not see. I definitely saw a piece a couple of days ago that said Atlanta has no interest in dealing Maybin. And really, for the extra dough, personally I think Parra fits the needs, for probably less of a commitment. And yes, I have heard Parra is on a few teams’ radars, but he has been on SF’s for a long time (per a number of things I have read). Time will tell..we’re just a couple of old armchair GMs. 😉

Hey, on a separate note…did you see a friend request from me via FB? Would be good to connect there (as I have with Blade, Edd, Paul in Asia, Flavor, Dirt, and maybe a few other Flappers). Take care, brother and GO GIANTS!

Even when they were really good 5 yrs ago Phils always seemed to have rough time hitting here. Now they are really bad, so no excuses.

Btw, if you take the Wabac machine to 2009, J Sanchez no hits Pads 8-0 (in front of his Dad, right?) with only baserunner on by error on Uribe who was playing 3b.

Just noticed that I am wearing my NL Championship shirt from 2012. And the team our boys took out to punch their ticket to the WS…the Phils. I can see Ryan Howard standing there looking at a fastball right down the heart of the plate to end the game and series. Time to recapture some of that magic!

    • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on July 10, 2015 at 8:57 am

What a great moment that was. Wilson had to do his usual high wire act, but that speedball down Broadway was classic (I think it was a slider, actually, but I’ve been waiting for the chance to use the word ‘speedball’ in a sentence for a while now). Posey leaping out of this crouch with his arms raised. On to the World Series!

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 10, 2015 at 9:11 am

You are right, LJ. The previous pitch (one Howard barely missed and fouled straight back was like a 97 or 98 MPH fastball), and then Wilson froze him with a slider that was on the outside of the plate. Gail and I were at a sports bar in Pleasanton (we were there for an agility competition with our dogs) and the place went absolute nuts. I was dancing around high-fiving strangers…it was pure pandemonium.

Here is a good video clip of that K of Howard from a Giant’s fans perspective. Pretty cool…

Interesting quote from Lester Hayes talking about Kenny Stabler:

Cornerback Lester Hayes joined the Raiders in 1977. He said he was “amazed” by Stabler.

“I never saw anything like it,” Hayes said. “He had pinpoint accuracy. He was like Madison Bumgarner. Fastballs, slider, just pinpoint accuracy. … Back in the ’70s, we had a lot of love on our team. Kenny was a big part of that.”

In the light of our recent play – geez, here we are fast approaching the middle of July and we have won only 1 game this month (… Whaaaat? … is that right? … I just double checked … That’s IS correct) – I was feeling pretty shitty, as I think many of you were. Greater Raider names: Lamonica … Blanda

I grew up in Canada as a passionate CFL fan. My local team’s colors were orange & black and although I loved the Canadian game I folllowed American football with fervor. The Raiders were my team, Big Ben Davidson was my guy … I wanted to be a 6’8″ DE … but was fated to be a 5’11” DHB. My misguided young adult aspirations and fantasticism led me to a walk-on tryout at a Junior Big Four League camp – next step would have been the CFL.

My local swimming pool supply co. is run by a former CFL OT (as a kid, I had his football card, they came on the back of cereal boxes which you would cut out) … you cannot believe what the fingers on one of this guys hands look like … a totally misshapen tangle of flesh & bone.

Luckily, I was a much better musician than athlete.

I was a total disciple of the AFL. I wept when the leagues merged. When Joe Kapp jumped ship after winning a CFL championship for my hometown heroes, and headed to the Vikings, I secretly pulled for Dawson and the Chiefs to kick his ass in Super Bowl IV … which they, of course, did. According to Wiki Kapp is still only QB to man the helm in Rose Bowl, Grey Cup and Super Bowl games.

I only ask because Maxwell seemed like such a stud at the outset … and now … well, y’all have witnessed what I have …. he is fuckin’ useless. He certainly brings a good glove and decent arm … is there nothing that can be done to straighten this guy out? … even just a little bit? Ah, the Phillies. I was a big fan back in the Jonny Callison / Richie Allen / Jim Bunning years. They really pissed me off when they blew it in ’64 (that was sort of the first pennant race that I remember as a kid). My Dad, as some of you here might remember, was a Phanatic (more or less) up until his death in April, so I always watched a lot of Phils’ baseball when I was visiting the folks. Dominic Brown always *looked like* a ball player I could’ve coveted for the G’s outfield, but man, he’s hitting under .200 and *looks like* he’ll never put it together. Revere, on the other hand, always struck me as a good match for SF’s center field needs, especially if Pagan’s knees are going to prevent him from ever performing well again. In addition to many other times as well, I will always miss my Pops whenever I think of or see the Phillies.

I feel for Hamels, he’s been a real trooper there in Philly, watching that team on a downward spiral after winning it all in ’08. They’ve hit bottom this year. Amid all the trade talk, Hamels always said he wanted to stay in Philly, believing that Amaro was gonna put things back together. Wrong-o. His best years are likely behind him, but I’d still welcome the guy if the asking price wasn’t too high.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 10, 2015 at 9:36 pm

    Good old fashioned thrash.
gonna be a lot of crooked numbers in the box score and more importantly for a lot of guys that have been straining lately, good sign.

Hamels, btw, is not really too overpriced for rest of his deal and isn’t making any more than Cain is I don’t think.
He might not be at Greinke Cueto level, but those guys likely to be more costly in their next long term deals.
Like I said earlier, as long as Phils don’t trade him to LA they can stick around as long they like.

  51. Paul Sorensen's avatar Paul Sorensen said, on July 10, 2015 at 10:36 pm

And an interesting quote by Sergio, trying to explain his less than stellar numbers this year, saying that hitters aren’t afraid of him anymore: “Guys are going in there and it seems like they’re ready to go. They’re not afraid, they’re not surprised.” Comcast says: “Now the real question is: How can Romo put fear back in hitters’ eyes that once had him have Miguel Cabrera stare at strike three to win the 2012 World Series?” I’m guessin’ not…

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 10, 2015 at 10:42 pm

Yep…it’s a sad thing. I have liked Romo over the years, but the mystery of his stuff seems to have disappeared.

    • James's avatar James said, on July 10, 2015 at 11:28 pm

His fastball hasn’t lost any MPH and his K rate is phenomenal, so he’s still fooling somebody. RHers remain pretty helpless against Romo. Cuddyer has had a couple of good ABs.

He’s pitched 25 innings. Lefties are 12 for 30, which explains the poor overall numbers. He’s vulnerable to lefties, but there’s no rational reason to believe they’d hit at a 400 clip over a longer stretch.

Can anybody tell me of a Giants attack more schizophrenic than this year’s model? Going from getting shut down seriously by both good pitchers and not so hot ones to a 15-2 whomping of the Phillys if off the charts whacko. When you consider the total trashing of Cole Hamels for nine earnies you begin to wonder how Mr Hyde could so quickly transmogrify into Dr. Jekyll.

Those attempting to predict the future course of the SF offense for the rest of the season might be better off throwing money at the lottery.

From Ray Ratto’s column on csnbayarea.com:

Bill Murray, Noted Communist, courtesy Don Doxsie of the Quad City Times, covering the John Deere Classic Pro-Am:

“Murray, wearing a floppy hat and a blue and gold paisley shirt that was perpetually untucked, began bantering with the masses before he took his first swing. He asked if any fans saw his beloved Cubs sweep St. Louis in a double-header Tuesday. One woman behind the ropes said she was a Cardinals fan.

“’Satan’s messengers on Earth,’ was the way Murray described the Cardinals. ‘And then it turns out your team is cheaters, too,’ he added.”

The Giants have had losing streaks of 8, 7, and 5 games. During those games the pitching staff has given up 113 runs. That’s nearly 6 runs a game.

The perception that the offense is wildly inconsistent is exactly that — a perception.
