Dead Man Walking
Hector Sanchez has returned. I admit, I didn’t even know he was still playing. Thought he retired. Maybe he should have. This guy is playing with fire and you can’t help but wince every time you see him take one off the face.
Here’s what he said yesterday:
“I was scared after what happened last year, but I try to live with it,” Sanchez said. “Nothing I can do. If I play baseball, I have to be a catcher. It’s how I learned to play.”
That’s hardly a mindset that anyone should have to have when they go to work everyday. Every pitch that’s thrown at him is a risk. It’s hard to watch.
Agree Craig re: Sanchez. I can see why he got the call (sort of)…a guy with ML experience. Cannot recall who made the comment the other day, but I would have rather seen Ben Turner get the call (made the jump from San Jose to Sacto this year). He is tearing it up in AAA right now (although it is a small sample size) and has thrown-out 38% of steal attempts.
Hector, the human magnet. It seems like every time I see him get hit, they are full on shots, no glancing blows. I guess continuing on as a catcher is his call (sort of). From 2012 through 2014 he made about $500 thousand a year, this year he is making $800 thousand. Man, I hope that is because he was arb eligible and it wasn’t the Giants sweetening the deal to talk him into climbing back into the pinball machine
Man, I hope he doesn’t have to catch very often..
I completely agree, yet I understand. Hector has done this all of his life and no matter what he says now, young people just don’t grasp permanent disability and their own mortality. I remember when a 49er was asked whether he knew that football linemen had an average life expectancy of 20 years less than the average for all men. He responded, in essence, that it was “part of the deal”.
Anyway, I wish Hector well.
Duh-stin Johnson finishes 75/75 and that’s the face of a man who can’t stand the pressure…..
Knowing who he goes home to every night, I have zero sympathy.
Wait, Hector is just coming off the DL because of another concussion? This is from Schulman –
“Sanchez returned from Sacramento’s disabled list Thursday. In a July 2 game against Salt Lake City, he took three foul shots off the mask. He said he initially felt dizzy, “but after that I felt very good, nothing serious like before.”
Manager Bruce Bochy said the medical staff will keep a keen eye on Sanchez, but he is healthy now and able to play.”
I know, that’s what inspired the thread. Seems like the Giants should save him from himself, force him to retire, turn him into a coach or something with a nice salary. Trotting him back out there almost seems sick to me.
I agree, this is crazy.
What? That last one felt like getting hit in the head with a sledge hammer, and this one only felt like getting hit with a claw hammer? Unbelievable, I think I’ll try and avoid watching games he’s catching.
5 years ago today, Mattingly got taken to school……
http://m.mlb.com/video/v10115281/must-c-controversial-dodgers-mound-visits
Wow…hard to believe it was five years ago when we were all here talking about “Donny Two Trips.” That video is still priceless.
What a fucking putt by Spieth on 16. Are you kidding me!
That is some good television, Big Flavor. The game recap is worth a look too. Lincecum, Sandoval, Rowand (fresh off 2000 swings in the cage no doubt) and Torres with the nail in the coffin.
http://m.mlb.com/video/v10115463/72010-giants-overcome-dodgers-in-bizarre-fashion/?game_pk=265210
Great memory video Dirt. Thanks for the share. Glass at 2nd…Pablo at 1st…Aaron (got a corncob up my ass getting nailed and leading the the Kershaw ejection)…and Torres with the big knock…gotta love it!
Hate to burst your bubble, snarkk, but Garcia (your pick to win the Open) isn’t gonna happen. I am pulling for Spieth to pull it out here. I do not follow/watch golf that often, but sure would like to be watching this final round right now.
Gonna need a miracle putt from off the green and up a hill for Spieth to make the playoff.
Damn near made it. This kid is unreal though.
All I saw was some 20 year old amateur kid from Ireland was atop the leaderboard. Hard to think he”l make the charge, but who knows? Some kid nearly won at St Andrews a couple years ago . . .
As far as Sanchez goes, he’s got to be taken off the shelf pretty soon. This is damn near negligence in the Giants case. He’s taken more shots than Mike Metheny in a shorter amount of time.
exactly. And if he takes another pop the Giants are going to be like, “ok, that’s probably enough.” But that could be too late. Waiting for him to get hit in the head again is stupid considering the position he plays. It’s not like he’s at first base…..
it would seem like the g’s are opening themselves up to a large liability issue downstream. you gotta wonder why?
Sucks to be working.
This last round must be crazy, tighter then a frogs butt!
So is it going to a playoff which I think is 3 holes?
4–1,2,17,18
Yeah, working from home is a double edged sword for me. Days like today, I don’t get shit done.
minor quibble with Spieth: I fucking can’t stand how he refers to himself as “we” in every interview he gives. I get it, it’s a team thing, but it’s not *we* out there swinging it, it’s *he* and he should say *I* more often. Or at least once.
Thanks for the video link, Dirt.
Yeah, time travels fast when we’re having fun. That game feels like the beginning of the 3-in-5.
I remember how the Giants were dead in the water in that game, until Lincecum hit Kemp, and then things started changing. It doesn’t appear, to me, that it was intentional from Lincecum. We all know that Timmy can sail that fastball high and to the right of the plate when he’s struggling with his control. Even more-so the last few years.
Zach Johnson is such as pansy ass. Can’t stand him.
too many tears for you? He did get a little weepy there, enough was enough
rumors starting to rumble about Tim Lincecum–as in, he ain’t comin back. That two-trips game in 2010 was a rare Lincecum dud, although he did scuffle a bit generally toward the end before stepping up in the PS. What I remember most clearly about the game is that the Giants never quit, even when they were down by a bunch. And Bochy was the toughest of them all.
Krukow basically laid the groundwork on the radio last week. I see them keeping him on the DL until rosters expand and if they make the playoffs he doesn’t make the cut.
maybe. What I heard was trade or release by the end of the month. but the writer who apparently said that off the record hasn’t published it, so who knows.
Hector…when you are young you think you are going to live forever, some doctor should be whispering in his ear about the consequences of continuing to play. I wonder if hector had to sign something to say he understands the risk of continuing to play? And will that signed waiver let the Giants off the liability hook? I cannot think of another reason why the Giants would continue to let him play.
Jordan Spieth @JordanSpieth 49s49 seconds ago
Wow.. Almost. Nothing quite like @TheOpen at St Andrews. We fought hard. Very proud of a role model and friend of mine @ZachJohnsonPGA
See, if he was going to keep in the schizophrenic character, he should have ended his tweet “friend of OURS”.
Wasn’t Johnson the guy busted for blow and banging other chicks while Gretzky’s daughter was pregnant with his spawn?
Yeah Dustin Johnson took some time off the tour for the blow rehab, but his Johnson obviously kept going..
Zach Johnson won (no relation to Dustin). Zachary likes to thank God a lot and gets weepy when thinking of his blessings. He’s the Ned Flanders of the tour….Yeah you’re right about Dustin. Would love to know whose wives he was banging before he settled down with Gretzky’s smoking hot daughter.
That’s funny. I never noticed he did that until you mentioned it.
In regards to Flav’s Speith tweet.
listen to him get interviewed. It’s constantly “we-this”, “we-that”
I’m not as adamant about Hector as some of y’all. He’s looking at it like he’s got these prime years to earn a lot of money to set himself up for life. I can’t begrudge his thinking on that. Yeah, there’s risk, but if wants to do it, it’s hard, I think, for the Giants to say ‘no, we’re going to basically end your playing career now.’ The coaching option is interesting, but who knows if he would be any good at it? Not everyone has that in them to be a coach. Plus, being a low-level coach would mean a big cut in pay, which is not something he’s going to want to do yet.
We’ve talked on the Flap before about his higher than average amount of “head shots,” as catcher, and if there is anything he can do to change that, by altering his stance, or position of his glove, or whatever. Someone mentioned that Krukow said that the Giants were trying to work with him on that, but it sounds like it’s not helping that much.
It’s like football. How do you hit someone up high without using your head? Look up to hit?
It isn’t physically possible to get your head out of the way. Same with catching. You squat behind the plate. How can you change or do anything else without taking your focus off the pitch? I’d try to figure something out equipment-wise.
Shit, I didn’t realize Hector was only 25. Yikes. He’s probably signing waivers up the wazoo per the Giants medical staff.
Dirt, that was Dustin Johnson. Doing his Dest Don Johnson Miami Vice impersonation. Zach is Mr. Milquetoast compared to Dustin.
Zach Johnson: Didn’t play like a pansy today. Played his ass off. I have a friend down here who can’t stand him either because of his religious tendencies. That can put me off a bit too, but I thought he went pretty easy on that stuff after winning today. I applaud the guy for a great win and being a gracious winner.
Spieth: Yeah, I noticed the “we”thing too. He’s obviously a total stud, but man does he play slow, take a ton of practice swings, and want to consult with his caddie on even 2 footers—(maybe that is where the “we” thing comes from). Waiting around to watch and then congratulate the winner was pure class though.
DJ: I think you are being a little hard on the guy. You don’t come as close as he has come without being able to handle pressure. Yes, 75/75 is a brutal finish, but golf is a sport that can bring you to your knees in many ways—pressure just being one of them.
I was in a pool where I had Phil, Day, Bubba, and Matt Kuchar. Other than those guys, I was pulling hard for Sergio, who I would love to see win a major and walk down the 18th fairway flipping off the crowd with both hands.
I’ll be at the game tonight. I bet Hud pitches well after having a good rest.
I’ve always had a soft spot for Hector. I know the numbers don’t look great, but he seems to swing the bat well when I watch him. I’d love to see him blossom enough as a hitter where he can get out from behind the plate and become a poor man’s Victor Martinez—even if it happens for another team.
Well, if he can keep his head out of harm’s way, it could still happen here.
Giants got to keep rolling against the dregs of the west.
Sorry Flav, I can’t resist.
Good luck at Petfood Park, Dawg . . .
Just bouncing around on baseball reference and I swear I have no recollection whatsoever of this guy:
http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/millebr01.shtml
you’re slippin’
Sandoval got two hits; but the bad news for him is that his last-place team lost 11-1.
I mentioned a while back I thought Hector should quit C and play another position or go coach. He will get hit again , just a matter of time. I’ve lost some respect for the Giants on this. They’re willing to risk this kid’s brain because, apparently he is. They should say no more catching for you, and give him his release if some other squad is willing to risk it and so is he. This stinks IMO. After Metheny, the Giants know well the risk…
degenerative hip disease? double meaning there, I suppose. Looks like Lincecum could end his career on the DL–maybe the 60. One of my favorite Giants. Sad to see him and Cain struggle. Brutal game, sometimes.
Sad to hear that.
Machi DFAed. Not a surprise.
sicko
Damn. Best fielding play I have seen this year. That is fucking slick…
That is a great play. Ballet with a baseball…
Awwwwright … 30 pitch first for Huddy … Hmm boy, I hope the bullies be drinkin their red bulls!
love the bunt by Belt. If they’re gonna shift you, fuck them with the bunt
That’ll probably be their only hit off Kennedy.
Or maybe not! Blanco!!!
I was pulling for Leishman, and except for the missed putt after that great out of the bunker (I think it was 16), he did just about everything right. But one bad putt was enough, and then he had no chance in the playoff vs. Z. Johnson and Oost. I’m also not crazy about athletes like Z. Johnson who spout God this and God that, but that was a helluva putt he made on 18. Yet another major decided at the end on a missed putt. Oost made some tough ones, but he blew some, too. And as long as we’re quibbling about Spieth, who is such an incredible talent, my beef is he seems easily and overly bothered by the photogs, much like Tiger and his former thug caddie Steve Williams.
agreed. I’m not sure if it was just more noticeable because he was on camera more often than other players but goddamn he and his caddy yapped a lot about phones
White Shark sighting in San Diego.
Ishi with dinger & 4rbi in KC tonite!
I wish him nothing but the best…unless the Bucs are playing us. I truly hope he can retire a Giant. That bomb last year will live on in my memory for the rest of my days.
Amen, brother!
Keeps on happening. If he doesn’t play on a daily basis El Tiburon Blanco is a weapon.
More times than not, Craw is a Wizard with the glove. Poetry in motion…
Crawford is a really, REALLY good shortstop
Slick play, Craw.
Fucking Kemp.
And the walk right before it was brutal. Nothing the defense could do about those two runs.
Yep. It may be too early to rush to judgement, but at 40, you really have to start wondering if Hudson has anything left in the tank.
Kruk said Hudson might go about 85-90 pitches. He didn’t mention Hudson might reach that by the 4th inning.
Yeah, that was another 30 pitch inning … well, 29 actually.
You know “ALL Catchers” should not be allowed to use those stupid hockey catcher masks.
They might be cool to them to match team colors or whatever but their proven to not to be as concussion friendly then what the umpires wear.
They use a heavier steel gauge on the umps masks, that doesn’t rock their necks back with the force that plastic materials do.
Some catchers like Posey, still like the hockey ones, cause their lighter and catching 9 innings or longer, but if you want better protection, from neck snaps/ concussions symptoms, they should all go old school mask. IMO
Kat, I have seen umps wearing the hockey mask….not many, but I have seen them. I get it that the traditional mask may be more protective, but IMO it should be up to the player as to which type of mask he wears,
Well Chi, I don’t think the Giants should give Hector the choice of what mask to use, considering all his concussions were from using the hockey mask. We need a backup catcher that will last behind the dish for atleast the next 2 weeks..
Buster is just locked in with his hitting lately, you know your going good when you have more walks then K’s for the season…
The Giants having trouble with Ian Kennedy: we’ve seen that before.
doggrels lost to Atl .. we got a chance to gain some ground here …. Let’s GO GIANTS!!
Tied up.
Bustah in da clutch!
Buster is sooo good when he has two strikes on him. He has practically patented shortening his stroke and dinking that single. If fact he may well be the best 2-strike hitter in the game.
Buster’s hitter number 1 in 2015:
Two Strikes 74 G 143 PA .238.301 .346 .647
Two Strikes 72 G 154 PA .256 .377 .410 .795
Miguel Cabrera’s the second set of numbers.
Cubs lost. Chance to move into a tie for the 2nd WC spot.
I could smell this coming a mile away. Fuck. Get the pen going. Again.
Hudson’s just crap tonight.
Yeeeha … here we go again ..
94 pitches…is vog ready?
Guess it’s Petit
He wussed out against Kemp.
How about DFA Hudson. I’m serious.
As I said the other day – Bum and Heston and three #5s (dead weight).
In all fairness, Peavy has looked decent since coming back, and Cain hasn’t been crap. Hoping they can give us some decent starts down the stretch.
True. Just wondering how much those 2 still have leftbin the tank going forward. Dunno . . .
Scrape and scrap for a run, and then Huddy loads them up and can’t get a fucking out. 100 pitches through 4.
Now Timmy may be toast? That’s seriously fucked up. He’s set for 5 lifetimes, but what the hell, That sucks.
I’m glad Huddy didn’t want a piece of Kemp. We at least have a tinker’s chance in hell to get through this.
Huddy was at 88 going in this inning … just gotta squeeze every nonexistent drop outta him, uh? Save the BP 5 pitches … but risk how many runs? Guess we’ll just have to hammer down on Kimbrel … Yeah, that’ll work.
Hudson said he was on the DL for old-itis. Har dee har har, that’s funny.
And true. Wish he had stayed and filled out his social security paperwork.
Holy shit…we have a Petit sighting…Hope he can keep it at one run here.
The fireman puts out the fire. Okay…time to put up a crooked number…
Again, Crawford making it look easy.
Yep…Craw having a great night in the field. Straighten one of those out and tie the game…
Not only is Pagan not right at the plate, but he has let a few in the gap get by him of late…balls he normally cuts-off. He needs to sit and get right. All the more reason to go trade for Parra…
Pagan’s playing like Grandpa Walton. This isn’t going to work.
Hey, Granpa Walton would have cut-off that hit in the gap…
Pagan’s got at least one bad wheel, and there’s NOBODY in the minors that can take his place for a DL stint? That is F’d up…
Is that 100 starts with Kevin or 100 appearances Chi?
Great play to nail Kemp at 1st…
I think appearances, Kat, but truly not sure. 81 starts, and has been in 85 games to date (these stats may be a day off).
Petit’s mystery injury will be coming up soon along with Machi’s release..
Something. Pagan has lost 2 steps, and Petit has thrown 40 through 1.2 innings. The pen is really getting qworked fast.
Craw with the play!!!!
Kemp napping!!! Dumb-ass!!! Love it.
There’s a bunch of nice young talented players on the Giants, but there’s a bunch of old creaky players, too.
Adrianza = not a major leaguer.
Hey Kuip,
It’s a bit of an overmatch every time OOO steps into the box…
One of the best natural swing in baseball Mr. Joe Panik..
Bunch of you Flappers beat me to it. I’m not the only one that thinks Huddy may be done. One more start at ATT, see how he does, but wow, this ain’t looking good. Gyros have two starters in Bum and Heston. The other 3 starts are a total crapshoot, barely can get 5 innings out of these guys. If that continues, this Pen will be cooked by early August. Is there anybody in the minors they can bring up to start? This rotation looks like it’s in serious trouble. The transition I’ve been yapping about may happen in the next 3 weeks…
Well, Peavy hasn’t looked too bad since coming back. In his last three when went:
6.1 – 3H, 2 ER
7.0 – 6 H, 1 ER
6.1, 8H, 4 ER.
Cain has gone 5, 6, and 5 with 5, 0, and 4 ER.
Not sure they have anyone who is ready to step in or not…have not been following the minor stats of late.
True. His last start wasn’t too impressive, and Bochy kept him in a bit too long to try and save the Pen with the big lead. If it were closer, I think he’d have pulled Peavy before going into the 7th.
Here comes our awe inspiring bench… Woooooo, Airhead Adeerancid …. sooooo scarweey!!!
so who’s the guy in the first row behind home plate, wearing shades at a night game?
It ain’t hip to wear sunglasses at night … Unless you should be wearing sunglasses at night, then it aint hip not to.
reminds me of that early SNL skit where Belushi/Beethoven snorts coke and turns into Belush/Ray Charles
Mine is actually a line from an old comedy album from the 50’s called ” How to Speak Hip’ delivered by the fictitious beatnik Geetz Romo.
Well, that’s hip. I still wonder about guy wearing shades in the best seat in the house tonight. I thought I saw him checking his phone earlier, but maybe not. Maybe he’s listening intently.
ah ha! he took his shades off in the bottom of the 9th. fucker
