A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Dead Man Walking

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 20, 2015

Hector Sanchez has returned. I admit, I didn’t even know he was still playing. Thought he retired. Maybe he should have. This guy is playing with fire and you can’t help but wince every time you see him take one off the face.

Here’s what he said yesterday:

“I was scared after what happened last year, but I try to live with it,” Sanchez said. “Nothing I can do. If I play baseball, I have to be a catcher. It’s how I learned to play.”

That’s hardly a mindset that anyone should have to have when they go to work everyday. Every pitch that’s thrown at him is a risk. It’s hard to watch.

Agree Craig re: Sanchez. I can see why he got the call (sort of)…a guy with ML experience. Cannot recall who made the comment the other day, but I would have rather seen Ben Turner get the call (made the jump from San Jose to Sacto this year). He is tearing it up in AAA right now (although it is a small sample size) and has thrown-out 38% of steal attempts.

Hector, the human magnet. It seems like every time I see him get hit, they are full on shots, no glancing blows. I guess continuing on as a catcher is his call (sort of). From 2012 through 2014 he made about $500 thousand a year, this year he is making $800 thousand. Man, I hope that is because he was arb eligible and it wasn’t the Giants sweetening the deal to talk him into climbing back into the pinball machine

Man, I hope he doesn’t have to catch very often..

I completely agree, yet I understand. Hector has done this all of his life and no matter what he says now, young people just don’t grasp permanent disability and their own mortality. I remember when a 49er was asked whether he knew that football linemen had an average life expectancy of 20 years less than the average for all men. He responded, in essence, that it was “part of the deal”.
    Anyway, I wish Hector well.

Wait, Hector is just coming off the DL because of another concussion? This is from Schulman –

“Sanchez returned from Sacramento’s disabled list Thursday. In a July 2 game against Salt Lake City, he took three foul shots off the mask. He said he initially felt dizzy, “but after that I felt very good, nothing serious like before.”

Manager Bruce Bochy said the medical staff will keep a keen eye on Sanchez, but he is healthy now and able to play.”

I know, that’s what inspired the thread. Seems like the Giants should save him from himself, force him to retire, turn him into a coach or something with a nice salary. Trotting him back out there almost seems sick to me.

What? That last one felt like getting hit in the head with a sledge hammer, and this one only felt like getting hit with a claw hammer? Unbelievable, I think I’ll try and avoid watching games he’s catching.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 20, 2015 at 11:06 am

exactly. And if he takes another pop the Giants are going to be like, “ok, that’s probably enough.” But that could be too late. Waiting for him to get hit in the head again is stupid considering the position he plays. It’s not like he’s at first base…..

Yeah, time travels fast when we’re having fun. That game feels like the beginning of the 3-in-5.
I remember how the Giants were dead in the water in that game, until Lincecum hit Kemp, and then things started changing. It doesn’t appear, to me, that it was intentional from Lincecum. We all know that Timmy can sail that fastball high and to the right of the plate when he’s struggling with his control. Even more-so the last few years.

That two-trips game in 2010 was a rare Lincecum dud, although he did scuffle a bit generally toward the end before stepping up in the PS. What I remember most clearly about the game is that the Giants never quit, even when they were down by a bunch. And Bochy was the toughest of them all.

Hector…when you are young you think you are going to live forever, some doctor should be whispering in his ear about the consequences of continuing to play. I wonder if hector had to sign something to say he understands the risk of continuing to play? And will that signed waiver let the Giants off the liability hook? I cannot think of another reason why the Giants would continue to let him play.

I’m not as adamant about Hector as some of y’all. He’s looking at it like he’s got these prime years to earn a lot of money to set himself up for life. I can’t begrudge his thinking on that. Yeah, there’s risk, but if wants to do it, it’s hard, I think, for the Giants to say ‘no, we’re going to basically end your playing career now.’ The coaching option is interesting, but who knows if he would be any good at it? Not everyone has that in them to be a coach. Plus, being a low-level coach would mean a big cut in pay, which is not something he’s going to want to do yet.

  21. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 20, 2015 at 1:03 pm

We’ve talked on the Flap before about his higher than average amount of “head shots,” as catcher, and if there is anything he can do to change that, by altering his stance, or position of his glove, or whatever. Someone mentioned that Krukow said that the Giants were trying to work with him on that, but it sounds like it’s not helping that much.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 20, 2015 at 1:05 pm

It’s like football. How do you hit someone up high without using your head? Look up to hit?

It isn’t physically possible to get your head out of the way. Same with catching. You squat behind the plate. How can you change or do anything else without taking your focus off the pitch? I’d try to figure something out equipment-wise.

  22. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 20, 2015 at 1:03 pm

Shit, I didn’t realize Hector was only 25. Yikes. He’s probably signing waivers up the wazoo per the Giants medical staff.

Zach Johnson: Didn’t play like a pansy today. Played his ass off. I have a friend down here who can’t stand him either because of his religious tendencies. That can put me off a bit too, but I thought he went pretty easy on that stuff after winning today. I applaud the guy for a great win and being a gracious winner.

Spieth: Yeah, I noticed the “we”thing too. He’s obviously a total stud, but man does he play slow, take a ton of practice swings, and want to consult with his caddie on even 2 footers—(maybe that is where the “we” thing comes from). Waiting around to watch and then congratulate the winner was pure class though.

DJ: I think you are being a little hard on the guy. You don’t come as close as he has come without being able to handle pressure. Yes, 75/75 is a brutal finish, but golf is a sport that can bring you to your knees in many ways—pressure just being one of them.

I was in a pool where I had Phil, Day, Bubba, and Matt Kuchar. Other than those guys, I was pulling hard for Sergio, who I would love to see win a major and walk down the 18th fairway flipping off the crowd with both hands.

I’ll be at the game tonight. I bet Hud pitches well after having a good rest.

I’ve always had a soft spot for Hector. I know the numbers don’t look great, but he seems to swing the bat well when I watch him. I’d love to see him blossom enough as a hitter where he can get out from behind the plate and become a poor man’s Victor Martinez—even if it happens for another team.

They’re willing to risk this kid’s brain because, apparently he is. They should say no more catching for you, and give him his release if some other squad is willing to risk it and so is he. This stinks IMO. After Metheny, the Giants know well the risk…

But one bad putt was enough, and then he had no chance in the playoff vs. Z. Johnson and Oost. I’m also not crazy about athletes like Z. Johnson who spout God this and God that, but that was a helluva putt he made on 18. Yet another major decided at the end on a missed putt. Oost made some tough ones, but he blew some, too. And as long as we’re quibbling about Spieth, who is such an incredible talent, my beef is he seems easily and overly bothered by the photogs, much like Tiger and his former thug caddie Steve Williams.

You know “ALL Catchers” should not be allowed to use those stupid hockey catcher masks.
They might be cool to them to match team colors or whatever but their proven to not to be as concussion friendly then what the umpires wear.
They use a heavier steel gauge on the umps masks, that doesn’t rock their necks back with the force that plastic materials do.
Some catchers like Posey, still like the hockey ones, cause their lighter and catching 9 innings or longer, but if you want better protection, from neck snaps/ concussions symptoms, they should all go old school mask. IMO

True. Just wondering how much those 2 still have leftbin the tank going forward. Dunno . . .

Scrape and scrap for a run, and then Huddy loads them up and can’t get a fucking out. 100 pitches through 4.

Now Timmy may be toast? That’s seriously fucked up. He’s set for 5 lifetimes, but what the hell, That sucks.

  58. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 20, 2015 at 9:05 pm

I’m glad Huddy didn’t want a piece of Kemp. We at least have a tinker’s chance in hell to get through this.

  59. Lisle Ellis's avatar Lisle Ellis said, on July 20, 2015 at 9:05 pm

Huddy was at 88 going in this inning … just gotta squeeze every nonexistent drop outta him, uh? Save the BP 5 pitches … but risk how many runs? Guess we’ll just have to hammer down on Kimbrel … Yeah, that’ll work.

Hudson said he was on the DL for old-itis. Har dee har har, that’s funny.

And true. Wish he had stayed and filled out his social security paperwork.

Yep…Craw having a great night in the field. Straighten one of those out and tie the game…

Not only is Pagan not right at the plate, but he has let a few in the gap get by him of late…balls he normally cuts-off. He needs to sit and get right. All the more reason to go trade for Parra…

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 20, 2015 at 9:40 pm

Pagan’s playing like Grandpa Walton. This isn’t going to work.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 20, 2015 at 9:51 pm

Hey, Granpa Walton would have cut-off that hit in the gap…

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 20, 2015 at 10:14 pm

Pagan’s got at least one bad wheel, and there’s NOBODY in the minors that can take his place for a DL stint? That is F’d up…

    • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on July 20, 2015 at 9:45 pm

Is that 100 starts with Kevin or 100 appearances Chi?
Great play to nail Kemp at 1st…

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 20, 2015 at 9:54 pm

I think appearances, Kat, but truly not sure. 81 starts, and has been in 85 games to date (these stats may be a day off).

Petit’s mystery injury will be coming up soon along with Machi’s release..

  66. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 20, 2015 at 9:42 pm

Something. Pagan has lost 2 steps, and Petit has thrown 40 through 1.2 innings. The pen is really getting qworked fast.

Bunch of you Flappers beat me to it. I’m not the only one that thinks Huddy may be done. One more start at ATT, see how he does, but wow, this ain’t looking good. Gyros have two starters in Bum and Heston. The other 3 starts are a total crapshoot, barely can get 5 innings out of these guys. If that continues, this Pen will be cooked by early August. Is there anybody in the minors they can bring up to start? This rotation looks like it’s in serious trouble. The transition I’ve been yapping about may happen in the next 3 weeks…

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 20, 2015 at 10:00 pm

Well, Peavy hasn’t looked too bad since coming back. In his last three when went:
      6.1 – 3H, 2 ER
      7.0 – 6 H, 1 ER
      6.1, 8H, 4 ER.

      Cain has gone 5, 6, and 5 with 5, 0, and 4 ER.

Not sure they have anyone who is ready to step in or not…have not been following the minor stats of late.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 20, 2015 at 10:07 pm

True. His last start wasn’t too impressive, and Bochy kept him in a bit too long to try and save the Pen with the big lead. If it were closer, I think he’d have pulled Peavy before going into the 7th.
