A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Gum Throwing Pussy

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 22, 2015

Kinda glad last night unfolded the way it did. I needed a reason to start hating the Padres. My favorite part of the night was the “Let’s go Giants” chant that broke out in their yard during the clearing of the benches. And nothing quite says “I’m a huge pussy” than being a grown man and throwing your gum at another grown man who isn’t even looking at you……

I’m happy for Sanchez, after all he’s been through, that must have felt awesome…..

Right. And when Kelly has his chance to retIate, he doesn’t, and instead yellss at Hector’s back. Serious pussy move there. They walked Gregor to get to Hector so he can give a little back.

I tell ya though, playing at home where it feels like the road, languishing in the cellar after dropping serious upgrade coin, I get why the team might be a little uptight.

Guess what? Fuck ’em. The cure for that is winning. Sorry guys. You stll suck.

I guess Buddy Black wasn’t the problem.

Hector probably brought it on himself a bit with the bat flip, but WTH he jacked the shit out of that pitch and he’s been through a lot the last couple of years. Flip away. That salami had to feel pretty good.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 22, 2015 at 7:55 am

as flips go, I thought that one was pretty minor. And who cares anyway? Baseball players are wound too tight. Thayer shoulda thrown that gum at himself.

      • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on July 22, 2015 at 9:02 am

You know how it is in baseball, all the old school show-me-up bullshit. But as you and Chuck pointed out the Padres had a half-assed response, if any at all, which says all you need to know about them. I agree it’s minor and Hector is due for a long stretch of good luck. If he can start hitting like he’s capable of, and he is capable, he’d be a nice boost in the lineup when Posey’s at first.

Unc is right, Black obviously wasn’t the problem. Why would you walk Blanco anyway down 5-0? Dumb-f move by clueless mgr. that completely backfired. And now they’re mad? Look in the mirror.

Just read something funny (but imo accurate) on MLBTR about the Pads, supposedly in contact with Stros over SPs in return for Stros prospects: if the new GM had done nothing at all–not brought in Kemp and the Uptons or Myers or Kimbrel or Middlebrook, kept Maybin Grandal and his prospects, they probably wouldn’t be any worse than they are now.

Agreed Flav about the bat flip. That was about as harmless as they come. The gum incident was a total dick move and I have a feeling once they see the replay of it, more retaliation will take place down the road…Thinking about going to the Stros-Red Sox game tonight. With the spike in attendance this year, I may actually have to pay face value.

Pawlie and a few of you were on fire last night. Once it hit 9-0, I chose to hit the rack for some much needed shut-eye. I see I did not miss much. Giants did not get another hit, and our boys gave up three runs (it appears, all unearned with Osich giving up three hits). Okay, time to win another series, and kick the sad-sack PediFriars to the curb.

Nice to see the Bums and Bucs lose yesterday and too bad the Cubbies could not join that party.

For whatever reason, the Reds didn’t use Chapman, and the other guy blew the save. Maybe Chapman was used a lot lately.

Chapman had only pitched two days in a row, but pitched two innings on Sunday in an extra-inning game.

  7. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 22, 2015 at 8:38 am

Hector should be given a pass for the bat flip because they walked Blanco (fucking Blanco?!?) to get to Hector. If Thayer doesn’t get that, then he’s eve stupider than I thought.

    I mean really.

  8. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 22, 2015 at 8:40 am

Best thing about it is Thayer MISSED Hector with the gum. He can’t even throw a bean-wad. Then Kelly doesn’t take his shot at Hector and instead barks at him as he trots to the dugout. Candy-asses all of them.

“Hitting with RISP is not a talent, and RBIs measure absolutely nothing intrinsic about a player’s offensive play that isn’t captured in OPS.”

I disagree. I think Belt is exhitbit #1 that OPS numbers can be padded and not reflect a hitters importance to a lineup, statistical gymnastics notwithstanding. Crawford and Duffy have both been clutch this year, hence the RBI’s, and Belt has not. A lot of 2-out, run-scoring hits this year for the Giants and the guys doing it have nice production numbers.

Slugging percentage is a reflection of total bases and OBP of hits and walks and, to a lesser extent, HBP. Those things do not automatically translate into RBI’s, as Belt is proving this year and, frankly, his whole career. Getting hits or walks with no one on is going to inflate slugging numbers, while not converting RBI chances doesn’t necessarily hurt them. If OPS always translates into run production, why does Belt have such mediocre numbers?

Spin it however you want, that’s my take.

  10. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 22, 2015 at 8:52 am

Day game getaway day, could be funky LUs out there. Won’t be able to follow much from work, but interested to see if Cain has better outing. Next are A’s…wonder if Beane waits to break up his team until afterwards.

Belt wars (odd they continue on a night when SF rakes Pads without Posey, but)…OK, if you don’t like him, who do you want there and what do you expect them to do? Majority of 1b in NL with better stats are either in friendlier yards (Mil chi cincy) or paid a ton more than Belt money.
If the answer is 30 HRs, hey go to youtube for some for Bonds highlights, because no one at ATT is putting up those numbers. I thought the whole idea with the current group is not to rely on the HR but keep line moving and score more runs, which they have. No one is hitting that many HRs playing at ATT. If Belt only winds up as good as JT and is among league leaders in doubles instead of HRs, can you live with that?

If the answer is Posey full time, then you are replacing Belt with Susac and Hector. Even if Posey’s numbers get better, and they are pretty dang good right now so I doubt a big difference would ultimately happen, OPS loss would be 100 points. Susac might turn into a good hitter, but that is completely unknown. So far RHP is killing him and his back up, if it’s Hector, would be much worse. But if you’d rather watch Susac, go for it.

On base and slugging really do matter when it comes to how many runs a team scores (and this has been documented), not just HRs and rbis.
Take this scenario–runner on 3b 1 out. A sac fly or IF ground out gets you a run for the team and a rbi for hitter, high 5s in the dugout, but leaves bases empty and 2 outs.
A walk, single or double (hey OB and slugging!) instead increases chances of more runs with fewer outs….kinda like last night.

Belt is Belt, He runs en fuego and then ice cold. What’s cooler than being cool? Ice cold!

I think if he threw shit around, I’d like him more. But that’s just me. He’s so low-key about everything.

Yeah, he should be doing a LITTLE more, but still and all, he’s a great defender, and the alternatives just don’t seem too appealing. Other than trading him to Houston. There won;t be room for him in LF when Aoki comes back, so he’s a guy without a spot. Duffy is planting himself at 3rd, Panik and Crawfish aren’t going anywhere, so moving Posey to 3rd isn’t in the cards.

I don;t want to see him traded, but it looks more and more likely as this season goes on. Unless he catches fire and rips for a month and goes 22/90.

BAHA! Your buddy’s gonna go blind.

I hear you on Belt. I know I defend him but I’m not totally enamored with him. He is what he is. A decent player with some pop. He should be embarrassed by his inability to put a strangle hold on the 1b job. He fills a need for the club and I think the Giants are better off holding on to a low cost controllable piece. Especially since they don’t really have anyone in the pipe to replace him. If he and Beede can bring back a legit starting pitcher though…

Give me Susac over Hector any and every day.

    Lifetime stats:

    H – .243, .275, .348, .624, 10 HRs (over five years time)
    S – .255, .317, . 435, .752 6 HRs (over parts of two seasons).

    Caught stealing %:
    H – 27%
    S – 28%.

They are both 25 years old, but I think Susac has more upside, and will be a better catcher and a better hitter.

Yeah LJ, and then Hector went through spells where he couldn’t hit his way out of a wet paper bag. Nothing against Hector, I just think Susac is a better candidate to be the back-up, and eventually the starter when they move Buster to 1st.

With that infield single Panik raises his BA to .318, rising to 5th place in the NL batting race and dropping Aoki and Posey to a 6th place tie at .317. So the Giants have three of the seven top spots in NL batting average.

Shields at 81 pitches through four. Yes, Xoot, Belt walks a lot. He should be switching places with Duffy in the lineup as he has the OBP down pat while Duffster has become the better RBI man. It cost Shields an IP to get to Cain and thus turns the lineup for Pagan to lead off the fifth. Shields may struggle to go 6. If we can get to him in that inning, then we may face a slightly different bullpen alignment outside of their big two.

When they are on this team can flat out hit. Buster is now ONE RBI behind Stanton and currently 4th in the NL. Crawdaddy is rapidly superseding Tulo as the #1 SS in the league and just may be on the pace to go 20 dingers for the season. Reason why i wanna see Belt returned to batting 3rd, particularly with the return of Aoki Friday, is that he plumb wears out pitchers. Shields getting the early out today is proof in the pudding.

Story of the day, though, may be our rotation’s return to the Horse latitudes with a vintage performance by Cain this afternoon. Looks like we may have three very good to excellent starters. Dogs will be under even more pressure to add a third. If its Hamels i hope the Phillies hold out for some of LA’s top prospects or they will deal elsewhere. Will the Reds spring a Leake for some SF farm-hands? At 2.5 games out and holding, the Giants apply steady pressure. Nine days left before the trading deadline.

Just harvested my first volunteer garlic, some radishes, first turnip, two summer squash which are a new type for me and also the first zucchini. The latter will be the focus (along with green tomatoes) for some mighty fine fritters tomorrow morning. Been looking forward to that pairing for months now. We’re a bit slow season here in the great Northwoods, but in Summer we get solar intensity you would not believe. And with plenty of rain its all good.

And who knew that The Most Interesting Man in the World was not only a dumb frat boy fantasy shill for a shitty beer, but also The Silent Voice of Sports Talk Radio Call-In Dudes?

But anyway, enough of tedious facts and figures, it’s time for a story!!

The other weekend I went to the local outdoor basketball court to work on dribbling left handed, driving to the basket, tossing in a few lay ups, and, most importantly, shooting a lot of 3s and closing with my standard 30 free throws. Now, I am a terrible basketball player, but I have spent some time practicing the long range shooting (God bless the Warriors!!) Growing up, most of the suburban playground players couldn’t shoot worth shit, so it was always possible to impress on the rare occasion you found that true Zen with the basket from 20+ feet.

There are usually a fair number of folks hanging around the courts, which are located on a middle school playground complex. This last time, a particularly saftig young mom was pushing the stroller forlornly on the far edges of the playground. Once I noticed her, I abandoned that lame fundamentals crap and started shooting my 3s. I hit a few in a row, but she didn’t seem to be paying attention. Fuck, that’s the way it always is!

It was getting time to head home, so I went to the free throw line for my 30 shots. Now, the thing about my 30 free throws is that invariably I hit 16-18 of them, but there are of course streaks involved . . . meanwhile, the babe with the baby starts pushing the pram closer to the court probably on her way home, and I just knew it was going to be a series of in and outs, back rims, and flat out off the mark shots just when she was closest. Instead, miraculously, I hit 5 in a row while she was around court side, even the one that seemed to slip as I released it dropping through. A real triumph of clutch shooting.

After her back was turned, I was 2 for my last 10 to finish 17-30.

“Position does matter….” Well, couple of the best teams in baseball have a curious way of approaching the business of putting their team together that would suggest it doesn’t.

Royals have Hosmer and Moustakas, couple good hitters with 22 HRs btw them. They let go the power guy Butler now on the A’s. Royals are 6th in AL in runs, 2 BA 3 OB 6th slugging and have 4 guys over .800 OPS and another at .795. Not a lot of pop on the whole team really as they are 13th in AL for HRs.
    .

Cards had Adams (on the DL) and Carpenter, again good hitters with 13 HRs btw them. As a team they are 7th in runs, 4th in BA 3OB 8th slugging and 11th in HRs, while Giants up to 9th.

Giants are league leader in runs, 2 BA 2OB 3 slugging 3 OPS. Duffy is never gonna be a power guy at 3b, and while Belt is among team leaders in slugging and XBH (1 behind Craw) he has just 10 HRs.
Giants have 6 guys over .800 OPS and doing quite well scoring runs with what they have, a balanced attack up and down LU, even if corner IFs don’t have the pop to satisfy individual cravings. Aoki and Pagan, not much pop at all from OF, but Posey at C and Craw at SS are all stars, along with Panik.

J T Snow career avgs in SF over 10 yrs: 124 HRs total, .807 OPS .369 OB (!) .438. slugging. Highs of 28 and 24 HRs, and hit 86 in his first 4 full yrs.
Fine player. Next HOF guy from Giants I imagine tho will be a 2b, Jeff Kent .

I guess the sports connection I could make is that some police officers played football or wrestled or whatever in high school, and they were kings of the campus, and then life outside of high school is not that same. Some of them have trouble with the adjustment. And not just police officers. There are guys who slog away at tough manual labor jobs, knowing that the high point of their prestige in life was high school.

Right out of HS I took an Admin of Justice class at local JC, populated mainly by what we used to call junior G-men wannabe campus cops. Funny thing was, the prof teaching it was a defense atty. and on JC college boards in Alameda county I think.
So what we learned was from the other point of view, Bill of Rights (quite a revolutionary document, even today) and 14th amendment and how it was used to get “civil” rights enforced from fed level, on down. We saw vid of Gideon vs. Wainwright, etc.
Class was great and I dug the F out of it. 40 yrs ago + and I’ve never ever forgot that stuff.

Another funny thing, the prof made sure to explain to us the real meaning of the term corpus delecti, and even put it on the final in multiple guess form, one of the choices of course being “dead body in a murder case.”

You’re lucky. A lot of criminal procedure professors are right wing cranks. Mine was. He forced everyone in the class to do ride-alongs with the local police, so we could see how tough the job is. Of course none of the senior cops wanted the gig. I rode with a very good looking blonde woman who’d been on the job briefly, and who clearly had to put up with a load of harassment from her brethren. Well, I learned how tough HER job was.

On the other hand, back in the 90s, I was fortunate enough to meet John P. Frank, the guy who took the Miranda case to the US SCt. Now there was a lawyer.
