Gum Throwing Pussy
Kinda glad last night unfolded the way it did. I needed a reason to start hating the Padres. My favorite part of the night was the “Let’s go Giants” chant that broke out in their yard during the clearing of the benches. And nothing quite says “I’m a huge pussy” than being a grown man and throwing your gum at another grown man who isn’t even looking at you……
I’m happy for Sanchez, after all he’s been through, that must have felt awesome…..
Right. And when Kelly has his chance to retIate, he doesn’t, and instead yellss at Hector’s back. Serious pussy move there. They walked Gregor to get to Hector so he can give a little back.
I tell ya though, playing at home where it feels like the road, languishing in the cellar after dropping serious upgrade coin, I get why the team might be a little uptight.
Guess what? Fuck ’em. The cure for that is winning. Sorry guys. You stll suck.
I guess Buddy Black wasn’t the problem.
Hector probably brought it on himself a bit with the bat flip, but WTH he jacked the shit out of that pitch and he’s been through a lot the last couple of years. Flip away. That salami had to feel pretty good.
as flips go, I thought that one was pretty minor. And who cares anyway? Baseball players are wound too tight. Thayer shoulda thrown that gum at himself.
You know how it is in baseball, all the old school show-me-up bullshit. But as you and Chuck pointed out the Padres had a half-assed response, if any at all, which says all you need to know about them. I agree it’s minor and Hector is due for a long stretch of good luck. If he can start hitting like he’s capable of, and he is capable, he’d be a nice boost in the lineup when Posey’s at first.
Unc is right, Black obviously wasn’t the problem. Why would you walk Blanco anyway down 5-0? Dumb-f move by clueless mgr. that completely backfired. And now they’re mad? Look in the mirror.
Just read something funny (but imo accurate) on MLBTR about the Pads, supposedly in contact with Stros over SPs in return for Stros prospects: if the new GM had done nothing at all–not brought in Kemp and the Uptons or Myers or Kimbrel or Middlebrook, kept Maybin Grandal and his prospects, they probably wouldn’t be any worse than they are now.
Agreed Flav about the bat flip. That was about as harmless as they come. The gum incident was a total dick move and I have a feeling once they see the replay of it, more retaliation will take place down the road…Thinking about going to the Stros-Red Sox game tonight. With the spike in attendance this year, I may actually have to pay face value.
Pawlie and a few of you were on fire last night. Once it hit 9-0, I chose to hit the rack for some much needed shut-eye. I see I did not miss much. Giants did not get another hit, and our boys gave up three runs (it appears, all unearned with Osich giving up three hits). Okay, time to win another series, and kick the sad-sack PediFriars to the curb.
Nice to see the Bums and Bucs lose yesterday and too bad the Cubbies could not join that party.
For whatever reason, the Reds didn’t use Chapman, and the other guy blew the save. Maybe Chapman was used a lot lately.
Chapman had only pitched two days in a row, but pitched two innings on Sunday in an extra-inning game.
Agree, pawlie was dealing. I was laughing pretty hard at the Jerko comment.
Hector should be given a pass for the bat flip because they walked Blanco (fucking Blanco?!?) to get to Hector. If Thayer doesn’t get that, then he’s eve stupider than I thought.
I mean really.
Best thing about it is Thayer MISSED Hector with the gum. He can’t even throw a bean-wad. Then Kelly doesn’t take his shot at Hector and instead barks at him as he trots to the dugout. Candy-asses all of them.
Was glad to see Hector hit a bomb. I feel for the dude.
Hey, does anyone have an asprin? My head is still aching from reading James’s post from late last night.
Zumie;s response is classic!!
Agree…that had me LMAO, Charlie.
“Hitting with RISP is not a talent, and RBIs measure absolutely nothing intrinsic about a player’s offensive play that isn’t captured in OPS.”
I disagree. I think Belt is exhitbit #1 that OPS numbers can be padded and not reflect a hitters importance to a lineup, statistical gymnastics notwithstanding. Crawford and Duffy have both been clutch this year, hence the RBI’s, and Belt has not. A lot of 2-out, run-scoring hits this year for the Giants and the guys doing it have nice production numbers.
Slugging percentage is a reflection of total bases and OBP of hits and walks and, to a lesser extent, HBP. Those things do not automatically translate into RBI’s, as Belt is proving this year and, frankly, his whole career. Getting hits or walks with no one on is going to inflate slugging numbers, while not converting RBI chances doesn’t necessarily hurt them. If OPS always translates into run production, why does Belt have such mediocre numbers?
Spin it however you want, that’s my take.
Day game getaway day, could be funky LUs out there. Won’t be able to follow much from work, but interested to see if Cain has better outing. Next are A’s…wonder if Beane waits to break up his team until afterwards.
Belt wars (odd they continue on a night when SF rakes Pads without Posey, but)…OK, if you don’t like him, who do you want there and what do you expect them to do? Majority of 1b in NL with better stats are either in friendlier yards (Mil chi cincy) or paid a ton more than Belt money.
If the answer is 30 HRs, hey go to youtube for some for Bonds highlights, because no one at ATT is putting up those numbers. I thought the whole idea with the current group is not to rely on the HR but keep line moving and score more runs, which they have. No one is hitting that many HRs playing at ATT. If Belt only winds up as good as JT and is among league leaders in doubles instead of HRs, can you live with that?
If the answer is Posey full time, then you are replacing Belt with Susac and Hector. Even if Posey’s numbers get better, and they are pretty dang good right now so I doubt a big difference would ultimately happen, OPS loss would be 100 points. Susac might turn into a good hitter, but that is completely unknown. So far RHP is killing him and his back up, if it’s Hector, would be much worse. But if you’d rather watch Susac, go for it.
On base and slugging really do matter when it comes to how many runs a team scores (and this has been documented), not just HRs and rbis.
Take this scenario–runner on 3b 1 out. A sac fly or IF ground out gets you a run for the team and a rbi for hitter, high 5s in the dugout, but leaves bases empty and 2 outs.
A walk, single or double (hey OB and slugging!) instead increases chances of more runs with fewer outs….kinda like last night.
Right now I’d welcome JT back with open arms.
In his recent post at the Merc Baggs discusses Heston as a ROY candidate. Duffy has been mentioned too. 2 San Francisco Baseball Giants in the ROY discussion? How ’bout that!?!
Belt is Belt, He runs en fuego and then ice cold. What’s cooler than being cool? Ice cold!
I think if he threw shit around, I’d like him more. But that’s just me. He’s so low-key about everything.
Yeah, he should be doing a LITTLE more, but still and all, he’s a great defender, and the alternatives just don’t seem too appealing. Other than trading him to Houston. There won;t be room for him in LF when Aoki comes back, so he’s a guy without a spot. Duffy is planting himself at 3rd, Panik and Crawfish aren’t going anywhere, so moving Posey to 3rd isn’t in the cards.
I don;t want to see him traded, but it looks more and more likely as this season goes on. Unless he catches fire and rips for a month and goes 22/90.
WillieD– I’d equate this to passing a very average looking woman on the street. All things being equal, I pass her by, maybe politely nod. But let’s say my buddy is with me and he’s like, “dude, I can’t wait to get home a rip a best to that hottie.” Then I go ballistic and say “wtf are you talking about!?!!?!” Does that clear the belt war up a bit?
That’s supposed to say “rip a beat” sorry on my ph in traffic
Rip a beat? What does this mean (seriously)? Is it like “jacking off?” *
* I need to spend more time with millenials. 😉
Yes, it exactly just like jacking off. Lqtm
lulz, rip a best works just as well.
26 posts in and this is going down hill quickly.
Perhaps, but it sure be educational.
I’ll give you that but come on, my analogy is spot on, yes?
I don’t know. Too subtle for me I guess. Does this average chick have nice legs because I’m more of a leg man.
No. There’s nothing nice about her legs. Jesus. She’s not ugly. Dig?
Works for me. Just finished reading the rest of yesterday’s posts. Conclusions – Belt does nothing for me as a 1st baseman . . . satisfactory, but nothing more IMO; James defense of him was convoluted at best; Pawlie was hilarious; and, the Giants rock!
😉
She’s wearing baggy clothes. Mc hammer parachute pants
Yer killin’ me Dirt with the comments about this imaginary chick. LOL
And she’s wearing a bee keeper mask
I don’t know. Too subtle for me I guess. Does this average chick have nice legs because I’m more of a leg man.
Potd imo
Dirt– that’s her. And my friend can’t WAIT to get home to rip a furious beat to her. In fact, he considers stopping off at a 76 station bathroom because he fears he might not be able to make it home.
BAHA! Your buddy’s gonna go blind.
I hear you on Belt. I know I defend him but I’m not totally enamored with him. He is what he is. A decent player with some pop. He should be embarrassed by his inability to put a strangle hold on the 1b job. He fills a need for the club and I think the Giants are better off holding on to a low cost controllable piece. Especially since they don’t really have anyone in the pipe to replace him. If he and Beede can bring back a legit starting pitcher though…
See? This makes sense. And had my buddy just said “I’m ripping a beat to her cause there’s no one else walking by” the argument would have ended right there
We’ll always have this epic bat flip. I’m sure someone, somewhere rubs one out to this.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTOFbJg4-k0
that video is a classic example of belt only driving in one run.
Eh, I guess you can see it that way but I’ll take 18th inning game winning HRs every day of the week. It also counters the assertion that he never makes a meaningful contribution.
Sorry dnr, that was meant as a joke. Should have used the sarcasm font.
Fucking spot on analogy, and I (and others) learned a new term today. Just ONE more reason I LOVE THIS BLOG!
With age comes less selectivity. Then again I’m still married so I should just let sleeping, uh, well, never mind.
heck, since the twisco’s came along the crack of dawn hasn’t been safe.
Craw received the Heart And Hustle Award from MLB . . . Pence was the recipient the last two years. Quite nice and deserved!

No. There’s nothing nice about her legs. Jesus. She’s not ugly. Dig?
Classic! I bow in the general direction of you two.
I rather enjoyed the whole sordid exchange
Turning into “Gumgate” between the Giants& Padres.
1st the famous bat- gum flick ,Pagan-Norris, now Thayer& Sanchez..
Maybe the Giants and Padres should play all their games at Wrigley …
I just don’t have the enthusiasm for the Belt wars. Big Game Jane going against Cain today. I hope Cain puts together a strong outing. Look at the guys Sabevans missed out on in the off season. Sandoval, Shields, Lester. Did the club really miss out? No need to discuss Sandoval imo. Shields? He’s given up 20 bombs already and posting a 1.323 WHIP. Lester seems to have turned the corner lately after a poor start.
I don’t really either. I wouldn’t have even brought up my buddy who wanted to rip a beat to that average looking chick passing us by in the street had WillieD not reminded me of the posts from last night. Also, I might need to get some new buddies. Who hangs out with guys who rip beats to painfully average looking women dressed in parachute pants and donning a bee keeper mask that simply pass by them in the street? I’m nothing if not self-reflective and constantly trying to improve the inner me. Time for a new buddy….
Stopping at the ’76 station was the only part I found strange about that scenario.
dude, he just couldn’t wait to rip that…..oh, whatever, nevermind. I mighta talked myself out of using any service station bathrooms in the near future though
haha, I knew once blade questioned the terminology that the rest was just a reason to post “rip a beat” as many times as you could.
actually, after that I had to work “ripping a furious beat” into the convo since that’s the actual term me and my friends used in college. And at exactly 10:11am today (PST), I realized that dream
Oshit optioned, Jeremy’s back. . .
well, I like him. And he’s only a ph call away. Affeldt better be straight or the rope for him might not be as long for him as in year’s past.
Pagan
Panik
Duffy
Posey
Pence
Belt
Crawford
Blanco
Cain
Go Giants!
This will be start 84 for Pagan. Irish Kev…
you know if you just change out the *l* for a *a* in his name, we could fire up that convo again…..:) 🙂 🙂
Cubbies losing 9-1 in the 9th. Bums won today…those fuckers. Bucs play later today.
For those out of the area, today’s game is the free game on MLBTV…
Crazy play last night.
http://atmlb.com/1gL988z
Got to take this one to make this a real nice roadie. Cainer needs to go 6+
LJ – You mentioned at 9:02 that “If he (Hector) can start hitting like he’s capable of, and he is capable, he’d be a nice boost in the lineup when Posey’s at first.”
Give me Susac over Hector any and every day.
Lifetime stats:
H – .243, .275, .348, .624, 10 HRs (over five years time)
S – .255, .317, . 435, .752 6 HRs (over parts of two seasons).
Caught stealing %:
H – 27%
S – 28%.
They are both 25 years old, but I think Susac has more upside, and will be a better catcher and a better hitter.
I think you’re right, chi, but there was a time when Hector was considered a pretty good hitting prospect, as a catcher that is. He clearly has pop. That was all I meant. I have high hopes for Mr. Susac.
Yeah LJ, and then Hector went through spells where he couldn’t hit his way out of a wet paper bag. Nothing against Hector, I just think Susac is a better candidate to be the back-up, and eventually the starter when they move Buster to 1st.
Hmmm, game’s blacked out but at least I get the audio.
Fuck, you are one better than me. I cannot even get the audio feed (may be some of the regular bullshit with the firewall here at work). For now, I am relegated to LameDay. Fuck it…I may bail early and go home and watch it.
Hallelujah! The audio feed came through! I fucking hate following a game on LameDay…
Fuck me? Oh. Fuck, me. . . .
Fucking Belt strands himself . . .
40 pitches on Shields through two innings. Belt does make those pitchers work for their money.
Fuck, Jerkoff…
Come on Cainer…be THE HORSE, Mofo!
With that infield single Panik raises his BA to .318, rising to 5th place in the NL batting race and dropping Aoki and Posey to a 6th place tie at .317. So the Giants have three of the seven top spots in NL batting average.
The SD manager didn’t know the finer points of the ground-rule double rule. That’s kinda funny.
Belt sure does walk a lot. Anyone notice that? Puts me in mind of those gifs that animate the Beatles strolling across Abbey Road.
Shields at 81 pitches through four. Yes, Xoot, Belt walks a lot. He should be switching places with Duffy in the lineup as he has the OBP down pat while Duffster has become the better RBI man. It cost Shields an IP to get to Cain and thus turns the lineup for Pagan to lead off the fifth. Shields may struggle to go 6. If we can get to him in that inning, then we may face a slightly different bullpen alignment outside of their big two.
Belt showcasing his all around game with walks, stolen base, solid D and a HR to tie it up. 😉
Belt said, “Haters gonna hate.” 🙂
Rip a Belt!
Fucking Belt! Why can’t he hit a HR when a runner or two are on base. Slacker.
Yeah, what a fucking prick.
huh! Belt worked the count full and then hit a HR! No BB cycle today.
Shields gets credit for a work-out.
Yes, Belted was overdue for one. Sometimes those double figures can present quite a hurdle.
that chick walking past us on the street is looking a little more appealing….
Maybe she can’t wrestle, but man, ya gotta see her box.
There’s a joke here somewhere about Belt being born in a ’76 station bathroom.
Buster Ballgame!
And Pence adds to the crookedness. Hell yeah!
Keep matricalating around the bases, fellas!
Or matriculating. Either one.
Which Giant has been the most consistent this year? Gotta be Kontos, right?
MudBugged Again!
When they are on this team can flat out hit. Buster is now ONE RBI behind Stanton and currently 4th in the NL. Crawdaddy is rapidly superseding Tulo as the #1 SS in the league and just may be on the pace to go 20 dingers for the season. Reason why i wanna see Belt returned to batting 3rd, particularly with the return of Aoki Friday, is that he plumb wears out pitchers. Shields getting the early out today is proof in the pudding.
Story of the day, though, may be our rotation’s return to the Horse latitudes with a vintage performance by Cain this afternoon. Looks like we may have three very good to excellent starters. Dogs will be under even more pressure to add a third. If its Hamels i hope the Phillies hold out for some of LA’s top prospects or they will deal elsewhere. Will the Reds spring a Leake for some SF farm-hands? At 2.5 games out and holding, the Giants apply steady pressure. Nine days left before the trading deadline.
I know Osich wouldn’t’ve pitched today no matter what, after the extended appearance last night; but still, I’m starting to miss him already.
Another Affeldt crap-fest. Bochy with a quick hook.
Affeldt may be roasted goose ~ done to a turn. He may get one more shot before the deadline. Bochy was wise to do the yank.
Shit! Stuck in a meetnig and I come back and we score7? Off of Thayer?!? Hah!
Fuckin’ a. Love it!!
What did Jeremy do in class today?
It couldn’t have been too bad if he didn’t give up anything.
Ahhh. John just told me Cainer went 6. Good enough. Even though we’ve used 5 guys since?
Strickland, Osich and Casilla had a day of rest. Excellent, because they will be critical components over the next buncha weeks.
Ballgame! Five of six out of the break, and Cain pitching the way he did today…hell yes!
Yes!! 5-1 roadie. Got to take care of things at home against the fuckin’ A’s.
I hate the fucking A’s when our boys are going head-to-head with them. Don’t know WTF it is…
But great win today and Cain looked pretty damned good. Clean-up a few of the walks, and he goes a bit deeper in the game…
Nice little 4-2 road trip vs division rivals who had plagued us earlier on in the season. Could be the team is coming into focus. The games vs Oakland (another plague over the years) may be the litmus test for whether the tough August schedule turns into a pleasant surprise.
Ooops. Already forgot we swept the Snakes. Must be all that weeding and harvesting out in the hot sun. Things have been growing like crazy for me this summer. Just harvested my first volunteer garlic, some radishes, first turnip, two summer squash which are a new type for me and also the first zucchini. The latter will be the focus (along with green tomatoes) for some mighty fine fritters tomorrow morning. Been looking forward to that pairing for months now. We’re a bit slow season here in the great Northwoods, but in Summer we get solar intensity you would not believe. And with plenty of rain its all good.
Enjoy it Stix! We’re so short on water, this is the first Summer I haven’t grown anything in forever. Jealous. Enjoy the volunteers!
Mmmm, radishes.
Stix, as of now Osich is back in Sacto.
Yeah Unc, read about it after posting. It will be VERY temporary. Betcha the braintrust is working to pawn off Affeldt on some team jonesing for a lefty.
7 of 8 for the G-Men. Let’s hope the Dodgers are starting to sweat a bit, especially given the way the Giants have kicked their ass this year.
You guys probably remember “The Swingin’ A’s” logo the Athletics had back in the 70’s. I knew a Giants fan who somehow found a t-shirt with the exact same logo that said “The Fuckin’ A’s.” Always did like that guy.
Time to beat up on the The Fuckin’ A’s!
Actually 8 out of 9, Lurky…
Actual National writers with credibility are saying that the Giants have a chance to get Zobrist or Kazmir. Does anyone pay attention to anything? Beane would never, EVER trade with Sabean. There is a 0% chance we get an A this year or any year with Beane running the A’s……
But if we did get Zobrist, we could drop Arias, Adrianza and Maxwell and add three more pitchers.
If he didn’t have a stupid contract, I’d be pushing for Melky…
Rip a best. Rip a beat. Whatever. While Magnus was writing all that, I was ripping it. Then we took a nap.
ppffftttttttt….. finally, and completely, this thread has gone too far. Well done Kokonuts, on ALL the levels!
Well, there WAS a baseball connection, if you must know. Yankee Stadium. September 2013. Mariano Rivera. Juan Perez. A win-win-win-win-win.
http://www.csnne.com/boston-red-sox/buckley-sox-must-cleanse-themselves-ramirez-sandoval?p=ya5nbcs&ocid=yahoo
apparently the Red Sox physical didnt detect the bad left eye
adds a twist on the term “ethnic cleansing” — or “ethic cleansing,” a new term
Loo, the comments from BoSox fans were even more entertaining.
By the by, B of A up another 2% today. 😉
Priceless.
“… Sox must cleanse themselves on Pablo Sandoval and Hanley Ramirez” Cleanse themselves ON? That’s a scene I would NOT want to see… 🙂
Met fans would die for those two…
I could definitely see HanRam being a Met. I’ve always hated the Mets. HanRam and Goggle Boy, perfect fit.
I mean… oh, nevermind. Drank too much last night and still feeling it in this Bangkok morning….
That can ruin your whole day . . .
Eating $250 mill might not fly tho.
Yeah cleansing smacks a little too much of the ’58 Red Sox. It ain’t like everyone didn’t see the fact that the Sox didn’t get any pitching help. Thank Sabean that Pabilto isn’t our problem anymore. HamRam? Well, he’a barely interested when he’s on a winning team. Now, he’s in slumberland.
Funny, John, I still have a tshirt that I bought in 1978 that says, in anger (because in 78 the Niners SUCKED), Forty Fuckin’ Niners. Somehow through the 800 moves, parties, and 12 million washings, I still have that tenuous connection to my senior year in high school. It’s a double x and would barely fit a 9 year old. And you can read the paper through it.
I had that shirt, Charle. Wish I still had it. And yes…mine was that threadbare when I finally tossed it. Loved it, tho…
Forty Fucking Niners!
And the next year after I bought that shirt, the won their first Super Bowl. Those were dark days…Joe Thomas as GM…back-to-back 2-14 seasons…
It’s tough times for Red Sox fans….

Gymnastics? Gee, I thought it was a little more like hopscotch. Admittedly, it can get a little dicey for some of us jumping around on that one leg and all.
And who knew that The Most Interesting Man in the World was not only a dumb frat boy fantasy shill for a shitty beer, but also The Silent Voice of Sports Talk Radio Call-In Dudes?
But anyway, enough of tedious facts and figures, it’s time for a story!!
The other weekend I went to the local outdoor basketball court to work on dribbling left handed, driving to the basket, tossing in a few lay ups, and, most importantly, shooting a lot of 3s and closing with my standard 30 free throws. Now, I am a terrible basketball player, but I have spent some time practicing the long range shooting (God bless the Warriors!!) Growing up, most of the suburban playground players couldn’t shoot worth shit, so it was always possible to impress on the rare occasion you found that true Zen with the basket from 20+ feet.
There are usually a fair number of folks hanging around the courts, which are located on a middle school playground complex. This last time, a particularly saftig young mom was pushing the stroller forlornly on the far edges of the playground. Once I noticed her, I abandoned that lame fundamentals crap and started shooting my 3s. I hit a few in a row, but she didn’t seem to be paying attention. Fuck, that’s the way it always is!
It was getting time to head home, so I went to the free throw line for my 30 shots. Now, the thing about my 30 free throws is that invariably I hit 16-18 of them, but there are of course streaks involved . . . meanwhile, the babe with the baby starts pushing the pram closer to the court probably on her way home, and I just knew it was going to be a series of in and outs, back rims, and flat out off the mark shots just when she was closest. Instead, miraculously, I hit 5 in a row while she was around court side, even the one that seemed to slip as I released it dropping through. A real triumph of clutch shooting.
After her back was turned, I was 2 for my last 10 to finish 17-30.
so did this chick have nice legs or not? And was she wearing a bee keeper mask?
You didn’t tap a beat on her ass? Or whatever the hell those guys were talking about?
I suspect that the hubby was well pleased with a rapid postpartum bounce back and that the honey is still drippin’.
And was she wearing “Hammer pants?”
Was there a ’76 service station involved (in case she needed to be serviced)??
“Position does matter….” Well, couple of the best teams in baseball have a curious way of approaching the business of putting their team together that would suggest it doesn’t.
Royals have Hosmer and Moustakas, couple good hitters with 22 HRs btw them. They let go the power guy Butler now on the A’s. Royals are 6th in AL in runs, 2 BA 3 OB 6th slugging and have 4 guys over .800 OPS and another at .795. Not a lot of pop on the whole team really as they are 13th in AL for HRs.
.
Cards had Adams (on the DL) and Carpenter, again good hitters with 13 HRs btw them. As a team they are 7th in runs, 4th in BA 3OB 8th slugging and 11th in HRs, while Giants up to 9th.
Giants are league leader in runs, 2 BA 2OB 3 slugging 3 OPS. Duffy is never gonna be a power guy at 3b, and while Belt is among team leaders in slugging and XBH (1 behind Craw) he has just 10 HRs.
Giants have 6 guys over .800 OPS and doing quite well scoring runs with what they have, a balanced attack up and down LU, even if corner IFs don’t have the pop to satisfy individual cravings. Aoki and Pagan, not much pop at all from OF, but Posey at C and Craw at SS are all stars, along with Panik.
J T Snow career avgs in SF over 10 yrs: 124 HRs total, .807 OPS .369 OB (!) .438. slugging. Highs of 28 and 24 HRs, and hit 86 in his first 4 full yrs.
Fine player. Next HOF guy from Giants I imagine tho will be a 2b, Jeff Kent .
“Position does matter…”. That’s what she said! As Maria Muldaur said “It Ain’t the meat it’s the motion…that makes your momma wanna rock.”
Apparently the gum issues started in April. I don’t remember this.
http://thebiglead.com/2015/04/10/angel-pagan-flicked-gum-at-derek-norris-norris-calls-him-a-dickhead-after-game/
yeah, chuck. I remember that. Pagan sure has a way of getting under the skin of the opposition.
Not baseball-related; the transcript from the Sandra Bland arrest. It’s a sad and infuriating event. There are police out there that need better training on de-escalating situations. This officer seems to have no idea what de-escalating a situation means.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/sandra-bland-arrest-transcript_55b03a88e4b0a9b94853b1f1
Well, when you have police forces generally accepting those people with lower IQ’s then this is what you get. Score over 120 in NY, and you’re out. Maybe it’s only 100.
I guess the sports connection I could make is that some police officers played football or wrestled or whatever in high school, and they were kings of the campus, and then life outside of high school is not that same. Some of them have trouble with the adjustment. And not just police officers. There are guys who slog away at tough manual labor jobs, knowing that the high point of their prestige in life was high school.
Right out of HS I took an Admin of Justice class at local JC, populated mainly by what we used to call junior G-men wannabe campus cops. Funny thing was, the prof teaching it was a defense atty. and on JC college boards in Alameda county I think.
So what we learned was from the other point of view, Bill of Rights (quite a revolutionary document, even today) and 14th amendment and how it was used to get “civil” rights enforced from fed level, on down. We saw vid of Gideon vs. Wainwright, etc.
Class was great and I dug the F out of it. 40 yrs ago + and I’ve never ever forgot that stuff.
Another funny thing, the prof made sure to explain to us the real meaning of the term corpus delecti, and even put it on the final in multiple guess form, one of the choices of course being “dead body in a murder case.”
You’re lucky. A lot of criminal procedure professors are right wing cranks. Mine was. He forced everyone in the class to do ride-alongs with the local police, so we could see how tough the job is. Of course none of the senior cops wanted the gig. I rode with a very good looking blonde woman who’d been on the job briefly, and who clearly had to put up with a load of harassment from her brethren. Well, I learned how tough HER job was.
On the other hand, back in the 90s, I was fortunate enough to meet John P. Frank, the guy who took the Miranda case to the US SCt. Now there was a lawyer.
