No News is Expected
All seems pretty quiet on the trade front and that’s really the way I expect this to go. The Giants have too much hardware (3in5) on display at the park to do anything rash. Leave those moves to teams that haven’t won anything in decades (see: LA Dodgers). And the way our farm system has been performing at the big league level, I’m not really interested in giving any pitching talent away for a #2.
I’m not too worried about it, the Giants don’t overpay ever so there’s very little chance that we see a panicky move at the deadline…..

I disagree, BF. 🙂 I mentioned at the end of the last thread that I wouldn’t be against Susac, Arroyo, and Beede for Hamels. I don’t think the Phillies would think that’s enough, though.
Hector would be alright for a back-up catcher in the play-offs.
I think those three would only set the floor of negotiations for Hamels. At least when it comes to SF and PA doing business. Like you said before though they’re probably still chapped over their last deal with Sabeans.
A rotation down the stretch of Bum, Hamels, Heston, Cain, and Peavy would get it done nicely, I think.
Vogey in the bullpen. Timmy back for the expanded roster in Sept. but not for the playoff roster. Hudson not on the playoff roster, either.
I hear Jeff Samardsfgkjshdf’ in the mix as well. He’s not as expensivo as the others but I’m sure the White Sox want more than table scraps. I could see a Leake or alphabet guy but nothing higher than that.
Any pitcher should get the ATT bump coming in.
Unless there is a sign-and-trade, AND the length of the new contract is reasonable (3 years, team option), then I am with Flavor and would just as soon stand pat. If they were going to make a deal, I would much rather see a trade for a super-sub in the mold of Zobrist, as our bench is weak dick shit. That would allow them to shitcan either Adrianza (he probably has options) or Arias, who is as worthless at tits on a bull hog.
For pitchers, as I alluded to towards the end of the last thread, I would just as soon see them get a guy like Leake (half the price as the others, and there isn’t that much difference in all of their current ERAs and WHIPs).
If anything happens I think Sabevans will get a pitcher and go to the post deadline waiver wire scrap heap for bench pieces.
Could be. I don’t want any of the “staff ace” guys if we have to bankrupt the minor leagues (and ship Susac, etc.) to do it. I would rather stand-pat and let Savevans do a dumpster dive.

Kinda sad .. but then again, it had to happen … he was a pretty versatile infielder, too bad he couldn’t make a stronger contribution with his bat this year … very difficult to keep that together when you have so few opportunities … yet, that was the gig. Over the years, he had some great moments. Wishing nothing but good things to come his way.
I don’t find this sad but I was never really a big fan. He got paid decently for what he produced. Which, usually, was good solid ass time on the pine……

whether we make a trade for something +++ probably depends almost exclusively on how much $$$$ the Giants are willing to take on. Most of our best young players are already on the team and won’t be moved. And there’s no way Young Beedah or Lucious (The Red) Fox get moved. But Shields won’t cost shit. As long as you take that contract with him. And if I’m the Giants, that’s who I go after. They wanted him pre-season. Why wouldn’t they want him now? They are making a shitload of money. Time to take on more salary. Shields is a fine #2……
Fine #2? You’re sure he’s better than the guy who threw the no-no just weeks ago? Okay, so Shields does get a lot of special K’s and would easily be top 3 in the SF rotation. In fact, if the Giants go for him, the LaBumbos would hafta spring for TWO top ranked pitchers to get ahead of Bumgarner, Heston and Shields as two aces would not quite suffice to make the postseason maybe even.
yes, if we were in a do or die situation, despite his failings as “big game” James, I’d take him over Heston in a nano-second. Heston would probably shit his pants in that situation.
Chapman has one more arb year. He’ll get a raise, probably to $12M or so, but he’ll be worth it most likely. So he’d be no rental. Susac, Beede, Arroyo, and another Richmond SP too, if necessary. I think I first proposed that trade weeks ago and Loo himself shot it down as too light for Chapman. For Cole H it would be too much, however.

It was probably a pretty emotional moment for the players and Bochy saying goodbye to Arias. Arias had a few big moments for the Giants over the years, and he was someone that Bochy felt comfortable with on defense.
Maybe his biggest play was the final out in Cain’s perfect game. He had to back up on a difficult ball deep at thirdbase and make a long accurate throw, which he did perfectly.

I totally see what you’re saying; but it would be hard from him to turn ESPN down, when they’re saying ‘we like you, we want you to be part of our future.’ It’s an exciting opportunity. But all those things you say are true- it’s more time away from his family and he’s pretty much set for life with the Giants, anyway, and his Stanford football gig. But it could be a thing where he’s thinking that if he doesn’t pursue all the ESPN opportunities, he may look back someday with big regrets at the road not taken. I think he has a bigger future with ESPN basketball than baseball, though, IMO.
I heard recently that ESPN doesn’t pay shit … It’s all about the “exposure”.

Yeah, I see your point from a Giants fan perspective, however, more exposure means greater fame which usually translates into big $$$$ … for some, the money is the bottom line.

The last out of Cain’s perfecto: Arias ends up having to take a big step back with his right foot when he’s making the throw. Not the ideal way to do it, but makes a strong throw anyway. Maybe in the back of his mind he was thinking about how Uribe had tried to come in and short-hop the ball in Sanchez’s attempt at a perfect game. Arias chose to go back on the ball, and it worked it well.

The Giants are winning with an entire home grown infield along with C Buster Posey. Seems like they know how to win the one run games by moving runners over and getting clutch hits. The Dodgers are the anti-Giants. Where they do more with less, the Dodgers achieve less with more. We’ve built a bullpen of castoffs and rookies and we’re shocked that it’s nearly as inconsistent as last year’s Brian Wilson-led disaster. We trade away our speed and now Mattingly seems content to depend entirely on the home run. We don’t go long, we don’t score. Right now, we have three black holes in the lineup—Puig, Pederson and Rollins—because the coaches and management seem paralyzed and unable to help players make adjustments (personally, I think it’s time to ditch Puig). I think the biggest problem is the manager and coaching staff. While Bruce Bochy seems to get the most from every one of his players, we seem unable to adapt and motivate. It’s time: deal Puig in a move for Hamels, pick up two proven pen arms, and bring up Seager. Next year, trade our surplus of outfielders, get Charlie Blackmon from Colorado and stick him in right and at leadoff, and resign Greinke after he opts out. I’ve been an Arias fan, which I’ve never hidden here. I like his glove and his hustle. Cf. 2012 NLDS vs. Reds. Safe at first. I hope he stays in the organization.
I think he was a good Giant. Versatile from a defensive standpoint and he did come up with the occasional big hit. I’m thinking of game 3 of the NLDS. He made the play ending Cain’s perfect game look easy and it wasn’t. I wish him well.
And I don’t wish for any big moves. Not necessarily. But maybe.

I watched the entire Yankee game Flem did (up till I jsut switched over to our game). He was good.
I agree with Flav’s call on the Giants going after Shields. He is an able #2 and won’t cost much in terms of prospects. I just don’t think we have enough to get a Hamels or Price anyway. Plus the Padres are more likely to help us if it means the Doghairs lose the division….Rumor down here is that the ‘Stros may make a huge push for Hamels. If that happens it would say a lot about ownerships desire to win now and in the future. I still think they need another bat. Springer has a similar injury to Pence, and we saw how long he was out. They have a dark hole at 1b and unfortuately the Giants would never trade Belt during a pennant race (as Blade alluded to earlier) regardless of the haul Houston could/would give up.

I can see the Shields argument. But they may able to get the likes of a Leake for less money on similar terms. And I don’t see a big difference between what any of those guys would bring to the table from a pitching standpoint.

If you watch enough baseball played by other teams you really can appreciate how good our defense is. It’s almost like we take it for granted—till you see other infielders airmailing throws, bumbling grounders, missing plays that Panik makes. Stuff like that.

Agree there won’t be any “panic” moves by Sabevans, no need for that. But i do feel like they need to add a frontline starting pitcher. But not just as a rental for this year, there would have to be another year or two of “ownership”, I would think. But not a Hamels (who I would LOVE to see in SF) or Price, probably too expensive, more like a Shields or Shamalama-dingdong. But maybe they’d be ok without an addition. I mean, thinking back to the post-season last year, aside from SuperMad saving the day, I cannot recall ANY other pitcher’s performances or contributions, and yet, they won it all. Again. But they’d be pushing their luck to try that again. I think. But maybe not. Man, I’m glad I’m not Sabevans. Actually, I’d LOVE that job. I would just really suck at it. 🙂

I was thinking about this earlier—Giants have had a bunch of post season heroes that had less than stellar reg seasons, as in Ross Rent and of course Ishi. Kinda glad they kept Max around; I could see Max whacking a big HR off the bench.

Fiers would do well at our park under Rags. He’s given up 12 bombs in that launching pad(Miller Park) but only 2 on the road. Would think he could give us quality starts down the stretch..
Fiers throws four pitches. Per a report I just read, he leads with a four-seam fastball at 88–91 mph. He also has a slider (82–85), curveball (70–73), and changeup (79–83). He also experiments with a cutter in the mid 80’s for some extra movement to induce ground balls or surprise hitters. His primary off-speed pitch to lefties is the changeup and to righties is the curveball. His changeup is considered by many to be his best pitch, and he has excellent command of the strikezone with all of his pitches. Despite having relatively low velocity, his command, the movement of his pitches (particularly his slow, looping curveball) all make him quite capable of racking up strikeouts. He had a K/9 of 9.6 during his four years in the minors, and so far in Milwaukee, has a K/9 of 9.2.
In short, this guy can pitch. In the phone park, he would be outstanding.

Double figure wins already in the books and a 3.14 ERA as of tonight going a full seven with something like 95 pitches with only 8 baserunners and two runs over that span. Cainer is gonna hafta go ballz to the wallz to get his old #2 starter spot back. Right now Heston owns it.

Agree, Clown. Law will need to prove his meddle…he certainly has (or had, prior to TJ surgery) the tools. Time will tell. Strickland has made huge strides when you compare him to last year. Even with all the HRs last year (6 bombs in 8.1 post-season IP), I predicted the kid would add some other pitches and be damned good. And on that note for this year:
26 games. 25 IP – 1.41 ERA, 0.969 WHIP. NO HRs…
