On the 7th Day, Voggy Rises….

Sunday Night game on ESPN tonight. Voggy v Liriano. On the surface this seems to have all the makings of an embarrassing execution but Voggy has proven everyone wrong time and time again. I don’t know if it’s the enchiladas, the blow jobs, or divine intervention. Maybe a combo of all 3.

I can’t come up with a reasonable expectation for success tonight so I’ll just leave it to you guys to pump up the blog…….

According to espn/stats, 14.1% of the pitches Matt Carpenter has taken out of the zone have been called as strikes, highest in the majors. I’m envisioning a St Louis fan version of James doing the slowest of burns about this…….

  Although, I disagree with his choice as Bonds’ HR as the 2nd biggest in Giants history. There are probably very few Giants fans who rank any of the Bonds HRs in the top all-time spots anymore.
  Arguably Ishi’s HR is bigger than Thomson’s, because it ultimately resulted in a ring. But even if we go with Thomson #1, then Ishi #2, IMO, you’d have to include a big HR Dusty Rhodes hit in the ’54 World Series. And Renteria’s huge HR against the Rangers, Uribe’s HR against the Phillies in the playoffs, the Panda’s HRs against Verlander….sheesh, I can think of a LOT of HRs that are bigger than the Bonds’ HRs, given the steroid taint of Bonds’ HRs, and that none of his HRs ultimately resulted in a ring.

    I’m not sure that 1962 team was the best team. Maybe the best hitting team, but not necessarily the best team. I think the 2002 team would do very well against 1962. And, the 1993 squad may have been the best all around “team”. The 2010 squad definitely had the best pitching of any SF team I can remember, and would have done very well against the 1962 squad that had a bunch of free and big swinging guys, and just decent pitching. If I had to bet, I’d bet on the 2010 squad over the 1962 team in a series. 2010 had historically great pitching, and a certain spark of togetherness and timing and destiny that will never be duplicated. Pitching beats hitting, as the friggin ’60s Doghairs repeatedly proved against the ’60s Giants — except for ’62…

Despite the conspiracy by umps that has plagued Mr. OPS that James has so well documented, he is now 1 one hundredth of pct. point behind Craw for team league in slugging, fwiw.

Hope LU can make a little more noise tonight, but Liriano is tough. Wish SF had a shot at him in off season but he re-upped with Pirates right away.

Btw, Triple O now has a “2” in front of other 2 zeroes for his BA this season.

Any idea what full roster of 25 healthy Giants position players/pitching staff would look like if they did make it into playoffs, hopefully as NL West division champs? In other words, what do you do if you add Heston and Panik and Pence back in? At least a couple guys would have to get the Zito treatment…

Nice for Buster Olney to recognize that stat, although as you might expect, I’ll point out that he’s missing the real story, which is that of those 14.1 %, a huge majority are outside — and that’s not simply because Carpenter’s more inclined to swing at inside, or low or high pitches that cross the plate. Being forced to cover the outside, of course, means you can’t adjust to the inside or high strike as well.

I am really not down with the all glove, no hit player. I’d rather have Tomlinson in there over Adrianza all the time. If the player makes the routine plays, and hits 50 points or better higher, I just don’t see the advantage. To me, it’s a wasted roster spot. You can argue all day that a glove man is helpful in late innings with a slim lead, but I’ll wait ’til James shows me some stats on how many games that really saves. Meanwhile, you have a chronically below Mendoza line hitter basically waiving at pitches with men on base 3X a game when Adrianza starts. It was almost as bad with Arias before they canned him from his bellhop role. That’s one thing that frosts me about this management. They wait and wait while bench vets prove their endless futility, until forced by near embarrassment and fan ire to bring up a young guy. Then, hey, shocking — the young guy once in a while actually does way better than the futile vet. McGee being the worst case example, and Uggla initially over Panik. I will never, ever understand why Sabes brought McGee back. Made no sense from a roster POV, nor from a screwing-with-Duffy’s mind POV…

MIchael Taylor of the Nats this week hit the longest dinger so far this year at 492 supposedly. But, that was at Coors, so how can that really count — I don’t think the calc factors in the elevation, so a ballpark 10% reduction brings that down to around a nice 450-460. To me, the Stanton blast in LA at sea level over the left field pavillion roof and outta the park was way more mind blowing…

Wow Edd, thx, cool stuff. I was in 6th grade in ’62 and definitely remember all the rain. Teacher let us watch game 7 in class, all the way through to Mac’s LD to Richardson. Like everyone else thought that team could get back to one but just too much good comp in the ’60s, great era for breakout black and latin ballplayers.

Zum, I’d agree with you on putting Bond’s HR much lower for SF history. Always thought Aaron’s #715 off Al Downing much more memorable moment in baseball history.

Hac Man, George Foster, Stu Miller…No mention of the Cepeda trade for Ray Sadecki either, nor Mays for Charlie Williams.

For one of the biggest plays in Giants history, I’d put a play where the opposition hit a double. It was when the Rangers player hit the ball off the top of the wall in the World Series and the ball bounced back into play. The guy never scored that inning, and the Giants went on to win the World Series. It just seemed so symbolic. After 50+ years, we were finally catching the breaks that it seemed the other teams always caught. I just love that moment. That ball came down at a 90 degree angle right on top of the padding at the top of wall. The ball squished down into the padding a little and bounced up, and could have gone either way, and bounced back into play. It was beautiful, poetic, and awesomely wonderful.

  When that happened, I thought to myself immediately that it was THE omen I’d been waiting for the last 40+ years — that “we” surely would finally win a WS. It was totally the oppo of in 2002, when in game 6 and we were up 5-0 BEFORE Dusty did his ball giveaway deal to Russ (which I didn’t notice at all), I was chewing nails and thinking there is NO WAY we have this thing nailed down yet. When he brought in Felix with 2 on I was thinking, please, please PLEASE no Felix 4-seam 94 mph gopher ball down the middle, and then BAM. We all the know the rest…

At least the Giants only retired numbers for HOFers. And we only put up plaques for really marquee dudes like Marvin Benard…

Here is a list of Giants on the PortWalk Hall of Fame placqueria. Through 2011. I can’t find a list more recent. Please add names if you find an update. Anyway, the qualifications are 9 years and some kind of quality contribution thing, or 5 years and being an All Star or something. My own qualification thing is reading the name, and whether the first thing to mind is either F Yeah!, or Nah. I’ve Xed out the guys I think should NOT be on it. I leave LeMaster on it only because he was like a 10-year hemorrhoid, hard to forget the pain. How Maddox and Matthews are off this, but Benard is on, is beyond me…

    Yeah, Banard was one of my least favorite Giants ever. A frustrating hacker, which in and of itself wouldn’t have been a huge deal, except Dusty was convinced that Banard was a lead-off hitter.
    And he played horrible defense. Constantly misjudging flyballs.

Thx to Edd, I went back and looked at a couple other teams in NL.
On the Braves one, they have vid of the epic brawl(s) with the Pads (in those awful Brown unis) over Pascual Perez beaning lead off guy Wiggins and their attempts to retaliate.
Didn’t realize it but bunch of Pads guys in the highlights are Giants related–Lefferts, Champ Summers and Flan.

Love to hear his take on all that

    I always thought it was cool how Aaron maintained his composure when the two white fans ran at him. He had received a lot of death threats prior to that. But he held his dignity around the bases, and it ended up being a great moment with the two white fans congratulating him.
    Fans running on the field happened a lot back in those days. It’s unthinkable now, especially post 9/11, to think of fans running on the field like that. It was hilarious and scary at the same time watching the fans run on the field after Chambliss’ big HR in the playoffs. The players had to turn into football players, knocking over people to fight their way off the field.

    A portwalk plaque is way better than those other plaques anyway. I see people stopping way more often to read one of the portwalk plaques. Those are so cool because they celebrate great moments, and certain pinpoint memories. There’s actual emotion in those portwalk plaques. You think, wow, I saw that when it happened. A hundred years from now, if climate change hasn’t caused the whole stadium to be swallowed by ocean, then people are going to see these plaques, and ponder those great events. As they walk by in their radiation-proof astronaut suits.

If SF gets through and takes the div, right now we’d probably be up against the Mets, right, in the div series? That’s some scary ass starting pitching they have, though young. They look like the 2010 Giants in some ways, though maybe the Pen isn’t as good. The Cespedes add was huge. That is a scary team IMO if they make the playoffs…

Loo– regarding Heston, it was curious but I think everyone can see he’s getting tired. With Voggy pitching well and Leake back, it makes sense. They’re probably praying that Cain and Voggy keep it going but if not, he’ll get a week of rest and be back up Sept 1st for the stretch run

Fun times in Dodger Land, as the Dodgers lose their 5th in a row. I was going to check out what Dodger fans had to say at the end of their game today, but when I went to the TrueBlueLA blog, the guy in charge of the blog had deleted the whole game-day thread! It had gotten that bad and ugly on the blog. And he posted a message on his blog:

This is mostly for regulars
Because the people who only exist to post negatively in game threads can fuck right off…
But seriously, the comments as a whole are an embarrassment right now. I don’t even bother reading them, because it’s just garbage 80% of the time.
Just treat people with common respect and decency for once, please. There are a group of long-time regulars who have helped devolve this into a constant battle of assholes. You know who you are, and all I ask is, please think twice before continuing to stoke the flames of an argument that has clearly not been advancing for weeks.
Continue to fight the good fight away from ignorance, but grow the fuck up, too.

Speaking of Houston (in a tangential sort of way), this weekend I learned that there’s a thing in Texas called “BBQ guns.” These are guns that are worn in social situations, like going to a barbecue. I’m not sure how I never heard of BBQ guns. You’d think I’d have heard of something like that one point or another.
But you’d think that, if people are drinking at the BBQ, and are packing heat, well, things could get a little dicey. But then again, that’s just my opinion.

  Zum, I lived in Texas for a bit over 3 years.
  Doesn’t sound out of the ordinary to me, for certain areas back there.
  A lot, lot of Texans think they are Texans first, Americans a distant second. And, guns are very Texan. Like anywhere though, there are poseurs amongst all. I left Texas partially because I refused to bring up a daughter (the younger one showed up after moving) in a “republic” where gov’t is forbade from interfering with your gun love, takes evolution out of school books, shoves the Bible in your face whenever possible, and will constantly try to stick it’s nose with impunity in your bedroom and your wife/girlfriend/daughter’s Ob/GYN’s office…

  Lived here since 97 and I have never heard of it. Fortunatley they do teach evolution now, so I am sure a lot has changed in the last twenty years or so. In fact the state as a whole has evolved with so many transplants from the west coast and north inundating their three major markets(Dallas, Houston and Austin). That being said, the state is still a red state (with Austin being the only true democratic majority) and some of the rural areas are as backwoods as they come. An open gun law goes into effect Jan 1st, however nearly all commercial businessss have said that they will not allow guns on premises, so the law is fairly pointless. I for one have never seen a gun, concealed or not, outside of anyone’s home in all the years I have lived here. I am as anti gun as they come but I will admit a sense of hypocritical comfort in knowing that I am less likely to be fucked with in Texas, as the other guy doesn’t know if I am packing or not.

He said the players need to remember why they’re here, to play football, and if it wasn’t for football *99% of us wouldn’t be in California” followed by a laugh. My second trip here to PNC and I think they said sell out buy that may have been from a scalper outside. Big crowd though but lots of seats still empty upper deck. Not an ATT crowd but great vibe. This is probably my third favorite

My oldest son and I came to a game about 10 years ago and we had a huge mother t-storm hit about the 5th inning and we had at least an hour half rain delay. Then I believe it was Linden who hits a 10th inning go ahead homer and who was that fwad former Met closer Benitez??? He proceeds to blow the game immediately in the bottom of the inning. We drive all the way back late on a Sunday steaming mad…

I was in a CVS Pharmacy, checking out their magazine section, and I saw on the cover of Guns & Ammo magazine a reference to “BBQ guns.” That perplexed me at the time, until I read some online stuff about it.

Lately I’ve been noticing more gun magazines in stores in my area. I don’t know what it means, from a sociological standpoint. I’m horrified and kind of fascinated by the phenomenon. The magazine industry is struggling in general, but gun magazines seem to be doing pretty well. I’m wondering if it’s just a temporary phenomenon. The market is probably over-saturated with “gun porn” magazines now, I would think. It’s not uncommon to see 15-20 different gun magazines in my local grocery stores. The Central Valley is evenly distributed conservative and liberal.

The two bats missing from the lineup were loud in their absence in that inning. Another golden opportunity down the big swirly with only the single run scoring. Susac batting 5th is currently ridiculous. Belt certainly would have done no worse. So in another sense there are 3 prime bats not in tonight’s game.
