A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

So You’re Tellin’ Me There’s a Chance….

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 28, 2015

We’ve got a 0.1% chance of making the playoffs this year. That’s better than I thought. If we were able to sweep the Dodgers that would rank as one of the best things I’ve ever seen this team do. Maybe ranked right below the 3 world championships. One game at a time. “You could be walking around lucky and not even know it…..”

Hey, whatever happens, at least we aren’t the Nats. We don’t have petulant children like Harper. We don’t have stranglers like Papelbon. And our manager isn’t….well, you know……

Funny note about Williams and his sinking ship: He said he didn’t know the severity of the fight because he was on the other side of the dugout. Just how big is this dugout? A mile long? Was Williams asleep during the fight? He was probably doomed before the fight but he will get his proper firing at the end of the season. Guaranteed…..

I’m no Harp fan but I support him, to a degree, on this. Pap didn’t yell at him because he didn’t hustle, he yelled at him for the comment Harp made to the press the previous day about questioning Pap hitting Machado. Pap was looking to embarrass Harp the way he perceived to have been embarrassed by Harp in the press the day earlier. That’s stupid. And what exactly did Harper do wrong? He was at first base when the ball got caught. This wasn’t a ground ball that could have been misplayed, it was a lazy pop up. How often do those get dropped? It’s September, everyone is tired, I don’t see the point in running like a maniac out of the box on a lazy pop up with the 0.1% chance that the left fielder drops it and you give yourself a chance to make it to second base……

Yeah, if papelbon had a problem with Harper, he should have dealt with it in the clubhouse, not the 8th inning of a fucking Elmo action game.

    Chickenshit move by papelsmear.

Greinke and Op again so it won’t be easy. But, enjoy all Flappers going to yard this week, esp D Zu.

Convenient excuse, but: Casilla and Lopez have pitched exactly same # of innings as last year, and Romo 10 fewer. Kontos the only mainstay that has jumped significantly. Strick has 50, Osich less than 30. Good experience for these guys, esp if Casilla option not renewed.
Romo, btw, has highest K pct of all of them, better than Strick even.

Like to see Giants pick up Byrd’s option right now and tell him he can come back if he wants to. I’d keep him and let Aoki and deAza walk, alongside Blanco Pence Parker Williamson. Pls, find a taker for Pagan and pay as much as necessary to do so. He had one good month at start/one decent month at end of season, which started off with him healthy that didn’t last long. Likelihood he has another good season left, slim and none. So go younger!

Giants have plenty of hitters—4th in slugging, tops in NL for hits BA and OB, 4th in runs scored. All this without Pence Panik yada yada.

I’m almost tempted to see Giants NOT spend big money on FA SP.
Shields yesterday gave up 3 HRs yesterday (2 to Inciarte) at Petco . ERA is 3.91.
So glad SF was unable to “land” either him or Lester for $150 mil.

Leake (who is also HR prone) is likely in 5 for $#75 mil range, Cueto Price Greinke 5 for $200 plus. Ouch.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on September 28, 2015 at 12:44 pm

Evans has already said they will not be in on Cueto, Price, Greinke, or any of the other BIG FA starters.

I suspect they make a play for Leake. Hey, I get it that he hasn’t done great in the short time here, but overall, the dude has good lifetime numbers, and most of those he produced in that bandbox in Cincy. I say sign Leake and add the likes of a Zimmerman, etc.

Pack and the Chiefs tonite? wow, somewhere Willie TC Mitchell (or his ghost) will have to relive not very fond memories of SB 1. The old AFL was a cool league, and West teams fought each other really hard…still do.

Props to local college teams for weekend also include my boys at San Jose State for spanking hated rivals of Fresno St. with 3 late TDs (probably in front of 20 thou, tops). Time was this was good rivalry and both programs sent a lot of players to NFL.

  9. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on September 28, 2015 at 11:15 am

Down with what Willie said regarding FA starting pitchers. None of these guys excite me. Cueto has face planted the last couple of months in KC. Greinke is too fucking old, insofar as handing him the combination to the Giants bank vault. Price isn’t going anywhere in my opinion, albeit, he is the best of the aforementioned pitchers. Zimmerman, per reports – wants 6 years. Hilarious.

Sign someone who has a very high ground ball rate (Fister comes to mind). Or, go inhouse and hope for the best.

Save the money, and get someone like Jason Heyward to replace Pagan in center. The game’s No. 1 prospect in 2010 has continued to disappoint, albeit moderately, in his first year in St. Louis. Dude was a monster in 2012 when he hit 27 bombs. Strangely, his traditionally stunning defense in right has also seemed to have disappeared; after FanGraphs pegged him as the game’s second-best defender last year, with an Ultimate Zone Rating of 24.1, he’s only slightly better than average this season. Even so, he ranks this high because the potential for superstardom remains, and because he won’t turn 27 until August. He will no doubt become a $100 million plus player in this FA class. Only negative in my mind is that I wish he were a left handed batter to take advantage of right field.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on September 28, 2015 at 11:19 am

Also, you could “sell” Fister on the fact our guys run out pop ups and grounders. Send the Preacher to make the case.

I mean, Harp made it to first, and, as you said, it was an easy popup. Thousands of players, including HOFers, don’t even touch first on a play like that. And someone commented somewhere that Pap doesn’t even have standing. He is a newbie on that team. Williams is GONE. Hey, Dennis, can I send your photo to the Flap?

I’m all in for Greinke. The guy is 50-15 so far in his three years with the Dodgers. I’m sure his winning percentage against the NL West is even higher. He hits well, and won a Gold Glove last season. Yeah, the arm has some mileage on it; he came into the majors as a 20-year old, but he seems to keep himself in good physical condition overall. Plus, the umps seem to like him for some reason, and he gets the Maddux/Glavine extra-wide strikezone. It would be nice to take that weapon out of the Dodger arsenal and put it in the Giants’, IMO.

    • Carstie Clausen's avatar Carstie Clausen said, on September 28, 2015 at 6:02 pm

Intrigued with Giants offering Greinke 3 years at $100 M. Net effect would be to force the LaBumbos to blow out their budget completely, offering him at least four for $120M, if not 5 for $150.

Excellent column about Harper by Richard Justice of MLB (fairly certain WilcoJoe is familiar with him, from when he wrote about the Astros, i.e., a good writer). Adds context to what happened this weekend with Papellbon.

Yep, Justice was a good one. Just another one of the many casualties created from newspaper cutbacks…..Speaking of the Houston Chronicle there is a great picture of Astros rookie third baseman Matt Duffy (yes, you heard right) wearing a Giants hat and Giants Matt Duffy jersey as well as a red wig and kilt, as part of rookie hazing. All of the rookies had to dress in costumed clothing for their flight to Seattle…. A picture of Carlos Correa dressed as wonder woman donning tight fitting briefs is making its way around the Houston facebook scene for his, ahem, size able “package.” Something tells me, he may give JJ Watt a run for his money as Houston’s most Elgible bachelor.

Love this Haft excerpt from an article he wrote . . .

“Logic dictates that the Giants should have exhausted their allotment of chances by now. Four regulars — right fielder Hunter Pence, left fielder Nori Aoki, first baseman Brandon Belt and second baseman Joe Panik — are sidelined for the rest of the season with various injuries. They have been replaced by a group of rookies — outfielders Jarrett Parker and Mac Williamson, catcher Trevor Brown and second baseman Kelby Tomlinson — who have embraced the spotlight.

“Don’t tell them it’s supposed to be hard,” Duffy said.”

Interesting test for Parker the next couple evenings facing Greinke and Opie. His performance may be closely monitored by both Bochy and the front office. Should he garner a hit against each of them i think he’s starting in the Opening Day lineup next spring.

I always prefer to be at the yard, and to be heading to the post season. But listening to my radio, I heard the crowd noise at the park and got a nice chill. I love baseball, Go Gigantes!
I would really like to SEE how Greinke looks for a better sense of the competition, but having Jon Miller has to be OK. I was all in with Greinke back before he left KC.But he has had some bad years over that time and I have cooled on him. Strong pitching was the old school giants, the new giants are defense and runs for 2016 so I hope acquisitions go that way. Not against middle tier pitchers like Jake was/is coming on board. I truely think some minor league building in in order. Go River Cats.

Brown looks like a better defensive catcher already than Hector, and looks like maybe a better hitter for average, not as much power. He and Susac may contend for the second catcher next spring. I say Hector needs to move on to some other position or organization…

If Buster hits a double, I’m sending Duffy…

Well, that didn’t work. Exchanged Buster, a slow runner, for the fast Duffy…

Now, you should run for Buster.

What a annoying way to finish. I want to win, if only to win tomorrow and make them sweat a little. 6 games out means it’s less annoying that Bochy didn’t just use Casilla to start the 9th. The kid did great in the 8th. Should have left it at that. Still hope we win, but having leadoff guy on 4 straight innings and not scoring is not good…

He went lefty v. lefty twice, went with the book. I can’t blame him, given Casilla’s been inconsistent lately…

This is where Strick confounds me. The guy needs an out pitch here…

Sheesh, he had a hard time with Ellis, not a very good hitter.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 28, 2015 at 10:58 pm

He’s gotta get more movement on that fastball. And, the slider just doesn’t have enough consistent break yet. Got to get on top of it more or something…

Yeah, a guy like Strickland needs to be a strikeout guy out of the pen. He’s so inconsistent at it.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 28, 2015 at 11:02 pm

Yep. A guy with gas like that should be lights out, not slog through a 10 pitch AB with tons of foul offs. He needs to study Kimbrel, and do THAT…

    Whew. Come on Giants.

Great D all around. I give Rollins credit for making the Giants make a good play on a bunt to get him out…

Posey’s D at firstbase is solid. He plays the position as good as a righthander can.
