A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Jake v Jake

Arrieta vs Peavy tonight. Jesus. Well, at least Peavy pitches decent at home, he was good last time out and the Cubs hitters, frankly, are in a bit of a funk lately. None of that will help us hit Arrieta who is coming into town as the most dominant pitcher in either league right now. You could certainly argue Sale or Kershaw, hell you could pick 3 guys on our staff and I wouldn’t vehemently argue with you, but Arrieta has been flat-dominant for going on 2 years now. I have no idea how we win this game tonight but won’t be surprised if we find a way……

As good as the Cubs have been to date and as good as Arrieta happens to be, this does not happen to be the worst of all possible times to face them ~ at home and on a roll after that historic road-sweep. In many respects this team seems to be jelling. Perhaps the outliers are Pagan and most particularly, Duffy. Nice to see both Panik with his four for 4 last night and Crawford rediscovering his power-stroke.

My biggest gripe with Bochy is his very loyalty to his players, where he appears to not want to upset their routines by shuffling the lineup. Duffster desperately needs to get outta the hotseat. Yes, Panik had those four hits last night and neither drove in a run nor scored one. A fair portion of the latter has to do with the fact that Duffy’s bat is ice cold right now. Drop him to 8th and run Belt up to the 3-hole. A nicely warmed up Span followed by heating up Panik and then OBP maestro BB9 should be just the ticket for Buster to get back into the RBI business on a regular basis. With Pence and Crawford following Posey, that array could mount up to a starter’s nightmare.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on May 20, 2016 at 6:51 am

dropping him to 8th will just cause him more problems. He’s not going to see strikes down there. And I pointed this out last night, his line drive rate is 25%. That is a huge number and a definite sign that he’s been extremely unlucky this year. I’d leave him where he is, he’s proven he can hit at this level and baseball players are all creatures of habit. Fucking with the line up will just make things worse.

I agree with Flav on this one. I have mentioned numerous times on the past several threads that I am not worried about Panik, DuffMan, or Crazy Horse. These guys are all streaky (hell, almost ALL hitters are streaky). With an eight game win streak, now is not the time to be experimenting with the LU, IMO.

If that (Bochy’s loyalty to his players and not wanting to shuffle the deck chairs) is his biggest flaw, I will take what he brings every day, and twice on Sunday.

Okay, you hold the liners ~ 7th then. It’s every much about Belt as it is about Duffy. Probably the majority of Belt “haters” on the Flap are better categorized as suffers from disappointed expectations. BB9 strikes me as an effectively if not a psychologically indifferent RBI man. Look at the stats, guys. But he is a demon for getting on base, starting rallies and extending the conga-line. Other side of the ticket is that batting deeper in the lineup, Duffy will get and maximize the Ribeye opportunities while under a lesser compulsion to constantly perform.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on May 20, 2016 at 12:51 pm

Stix – absolutely see your point, but I still would keep the LU status quo for the time being. And this has nothing to do with my thoughts on Belt. While I ribbed about Belt in the past, I have always been in his corner.

Agree with Flav about Duffy. Flav goes into the “weeds” so to speak, because he is a DFS player. So does WilcoJoe and myself. Here’s why DFS players like Duffy:

    1. Great contact rate of 87%.
    2. Great 0.59 BB/K rate (indicative of plate discipline).
    3. Great 12.4% K rate (indicative of plate discipline).

Obviously, his BA (.233) and BABIP (.259) are not reflecting his overall excellent contact rate and plate discipline . . . Which brings me back to Flav’s point – he’s been a bit unlucky. That being said, he’s facing Arrieta, a right hander and right handers (e.g., Duffy) get slaughtered by Jake. Actually, lefties do too, just less so. Anywho, there’s a good chance Matt will again fail tonight.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on May 20, 2016 at 8:02 am

good points. And I won’t be playing any Giants this evening for obvious reasons but I still want to see Duffy in his spot. He’s going to come out of this. I’d be a lot more worried if he wasn’t hitting the ball hard. 25% line drives tho, that’s hard.

Well, if we are going to beat Arrieta, our boys better bring their smoke and mirrors.

    Lifetime against our Giants:

3-1 in four starts. 26.2 IP, 1.69/0.900. 18 H, 5 ER, 1 HR, 6 BB, 23 Ks. I say he is prime for a supreme ass-whoopin’ at the hands of our red hot Giants.

If anything just swap Duffy and Belt. Or move Duff to 6 and bump the rest of the guys up. Belt’s OPB is .412 to Duff’s .292. Sure some of that is walks, but still I think we’d be getting more runs across the plate with Belt higher in the lineup.

Christ, what is weird is the supposed biggest RBI spots in the line up, 3, and 4, Duff and Buster, are sucking balls at 11 and 15 RBIs. Fucking Pagan batting 9th, and playing 11 less games, has more RBIs than Duff.

At some point he needs to drop in the LU. I know Buster is locked into cement in the 4 hole, but Christ, 15 RBIs?

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on May 20, 2016 at 8:47 am

      “At some point . . . ”

Perhaps later Chuck, but not now while in an 8 game winning streak. Bochy is not going to upset the apple cart while things are going good (nor would I). If we tailspin, then yeah – maybe shake things up a bit.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on May 20, 2016 at 9:10 am

I don’t buy that. When you are getting squadoosh from one of the big RBI spots in the lineup, you need to do something about it. Buster isn;t going anywhere, but Duffy needs to drop.

Yeah, there’s waaaaay too much money behind Buster to bust him off cleanup. But a constant clamor on the bases which a Span-Panik-Belt combination would essentially ensure (check those OBP stats) would segue nicely into the time of year when Posey usually warms up at the plate. The “don’t switch horses in the middle of the stream” of wins may hold some water theoretically, so let’s check the theory vs tonight’s results.

What a bizarre, but understandable outfield shift the Padres had going against Duffy in this series. Two rightfielders and no centerfielder, basically. I love Duffy’s opposite field approach, it’s what makes him special, BUT a hitter does need to make adjustments sometimes. If he could drive some balls to the middle of the outfield, it would open up rightfield for him again.

The Giants three top starting pitchers have been doing great, obviously; and I would have to say, for pure STUFF, that Smarge has the best, overall. He gets wicked movement on his pitches. The challenge for him is to control the pitches, and he’s been doing that better lately. Cueto has the best control. And I think Bum has the best balance of stuff and control of the three, although Cueto’s close. All three have been great. We just need .500 ball from the 40 percenters, and we are good to go!

Baseball’s PED issue is an ongoing and ever-evolving situation. It’s hard to use the word “scandal” about it anymore, because it’s like it’s become accepted in the fan-base that there are ALWAYS going to be some players that are going to see if they can get away with it, because the stuff WORKS.

When the starters are all feeding off of each other and pushing themselves to perform it is really fun to watch this club. I don’t know how much stock to put into rolling the Fryers though.

As far as the LU goes, I agree with the idea of not messing with a good thing but it would be nice to see Crawford in the 6 spot and moving Duffy down and everyone else up would accomplish that.

Kruk was in top shelf fanboy form this morning. Smargy is on the edge of unlocking his cy young potential (he could be better than Arrieta), Peavy has figured it out in the last couple of starts. It was good stuff to lead into the series against the Cubs. Sometimes I really appreciate his unhinged homer approach.

    Big clues . . .

Also, at one time, he held the modern day NL consecutive game hitting streak before DiMaggio. He also signed his first professional contract with the New York Yankees, but could not break into their outfield of Joe DiMaggio, Tommy Henrich and Charlie Keller . . . and was traded.

No on Maris, eh? … Wow, this is a tough one Blade .. I recall the year Maris hit 61 he struck out not much more than that, maybe 65 times or so .. That seems like a pretty good SO to HR ratio … by comparison, Chris Davis must be good for close to a couple hundred SO in a year when he hits 40+ HR.

But you said this guy only had 9 SO, ever … That is freaking amazing! ……. I surrender! …. no wait …. I’ll think some more on it ……… hmm, ponder, ponder, ponder ….

Well Blade, I was pretty sure I knew the hitting streak answer but never thought this guy would lead the league in homers. So I looked it up and he is the answer. Baseball stats were a little skewed during the WW2 years. This guy was an excellent hitter but not a home run hitter at all…

DiMaggio’s 13 Ks in 622 PA in 1941, the year of his streak, is mindblowing, too.

  32. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on May 20, 2016 at 2:00 pm

By the way, the perfect player to get a 56-game hitting streak was Joe DiMaggio. Hit for average and power. Struck out very little. Didn’t walk a super amount. Power is important because, obviously, an HR is the perfect hit to keep a streak going; there’s no fielder to catch it.
And, also, the era he played in was helpful. The opposing teams took it as a point of honor and respect for the game to pitch to him, and not just pitch around him and walk him a bunch of times to end the streak.

    • bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on May 20, 2016 at 2:12 pm
