Busy today, just a quickie to get ya going. Carl Crawford got Df’d today. Money well spent. If we didn’t have to pay for the next year and a half of his deal, I’d let him run around in right field till Pence got back. He could be the ghost of Reggie Smith. Loved that dude in ’82.

Today we find out whether quasi-resurrected Peavy has recovered his mojo sufficiently to put up a good game vs the currently leading offense in the NL, or whether his winning (or even competing) efforts will mostly be limited to flounders, flatfish and other bottom-dwellers.

I hope willied is right that Peavy will do better in the heat and humidity he’s used to at home in Alabama. Hope is one thing. Yesterday’s homerfest by the Cards doesn’t raise by expectations for Peavy today. Giants need to get their bats in gear, and don’t run themselves out of innings and runs…

If I’m the Giants, I wait till Crawford clears waivers and then I sign him. Pay him the league min while LA pays the rest. That would be awesome no matter what he does and he has to have at least enough left in the tank to out-produce Mac-Park.

Hard to see what Crawford has left. I think Alley is right, classic case of the speed guys that go downhill pretty fast once injured(Giants have one). He has no arm at all and isn’t a good OF either.

Watching the Stros-A’s game, Colby Rasmus is batting .228 with a .700 OPS.
Carlos Gomez (who HRed off Gray who otherwise pitched well in 5) is under Mendoza line at .187.

How about the Tribe romping KC and retaking first place.

Flav, buddy of mine grew up in different places, New Mexico Vegas and Missouri before family landed over in Fremont/Newark area of East Bay. Said he got used to Vegas, and if you can get used to that I think Southern guys get acclimated to that environment. Yes it’s humid in STL but not any hotter than bay area right now.
Bum’s comment pitching in ATL last year was he got loose early.

Coming from someone who has lived in constant 100 plus degree dry heat (Austin) and now 90 degrees plus 85% humidity heat (Houston), I would take the former all day, everyday and twice on Sundays. There is nothing in this world worse than getting in your car/truck at 7:30 in the morning wearing a suit and tie and sweat dripping down your brow before you have even turned your keys ignition. That is the number one reason I took a huge pay cut to work from home.

  I remember that Houston drill very well, wilcojoe. In the morning I’d walk from the house into the sauna of the garage and I’d be sweating like a pig before I even got into the car. 3+ years in Houston was plenty for me. Compared to Houston, Austin has drier heat, but compared to California, IMO Austin is pretty sauna like. I lived for 3 years in DC, it was a sauna in summer. But, I’d give DC a AAA league rating for humidity and the misery index. Houston is definitely major league. However, I spent a few days in Tampa once. After that sweatbox, I’d take Houston — Tampa was friggin’ unbelievably brutal. I wouldn’t get near Florida for retirement, because of the weather and the lunatics that live there…

  St. Louis ain’t no slouch when it comes to heat and humiliated relatives. Recalling Summer of ’64 up in the dorm room on #3 Fraternity Row at Washington University. We looked forward to after dark when the temp would actually drop below 90. With the Illinois, Missouri and Mississippi rivers all converging in the neighborhood, that scene has plenty of moisture to draw from.

Peavy? He looks like road kill this evening in my opinion. First 6 batters (Carpenter, Diaz, Holliday, Piscotty, Adams, and Moss) are a “Murderers Row,” with wOBA vs. RHP and ISO vs. RHP off the charts, especially in their last 14 games.

Martinez won his first 4 starts of the year, then lost 5 in a row before throwing 8 shutout innings to beat Brewers last time out. 2 starts before that AZ and Cubs lit him up; 4 of those Ls were at home. In 6 of his starts, and his averages about 6 innings per, he has walked 3 guys. So maybe best bet is to be patient and make him throw strikes.
I think Friday thread Daniel mentioned he had been bothered by flu bug.

Giants off tmw and then after 2 with boston, including Suarez start, have another day off before LA comes in.

  I’ve been a fan of that song since it came out. As a kid I remember it, the AM radio played the hell outta that song for weeks and weeks. Everybody wondered what the heck they threw off the bridge? Yeah, I was cruising around WaPo on the 3rd and clicked on it. A voyeuristic article, IMO, not my idea of journalism. But, then I went back to youtube and looked at various versions. The one I posted was a later one, she was a a coupla years older after the hit, and she really played with that version “artistically”, and it was a bit weird as she sat in the middle of that audience. But, I really liked that version. It’s still a haunting song, and you can put whatever meaning you want into it. Surely, the father’s nonchalance about Billie Joe killing himself, and the mother’s low grade suspicion of her daughter’s hanging out with him is grist for the mill. The preacher dropping in — all sorts of stuff going on there at the dinner table. I hadn’t remembered she was really a knock out looker, too — now she’s 70+. As I think they said in the article — she’s kind of the Harper Lee of country…

21 years I lived immediately around DC did not hold a candle to the one summer in Kentucky. Thunderstorms every afternoon/evening it seemed. Imagine Houston is that times 10.

But the hottest day I ever experienced was in Alexandria, VA. Worked in a restaurant on weekends including the Saturday double and knew it was a hot day so I walked outside between shifts and the temp was 115 and I shit you not the heat index was 1frickin30….was the equivalent of walking into a literal oven.

As you follow my tales of White Russians, you will realize it worked again last night for the Sharks. Dubs don’t need the magic yet…go Warriors!!!

And I think there are better options than Crawford. There was a blurb about the Giants being interested in Andrew Miller if the Yanks start shopping him but mentioned Tyler Beede would be the cost. Not sure how to weigh that but Miller could be a difference maker that Javier Lopez or Affeldt were in previous WS runs.

    I switched broadcasts to Jon Miller and someone else (dunno who it is). Wondering if this is still ESPN, with Miller working for them? In any event, I would love to have Andrew Miller. I have no idea on how good Beede is doing at the moment, but to me – minor league players are just currency (unless they are can’t miss like Lincecum, Trout, Harper). I’ve been following Miller for quite awhile and he is doing outstanding this season, with a 15.0 K/9. His 1.14 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 23 1/3 innings is also other-wordly. Only reason the Yanks are getting rid of him is because they need help elsewhere and already have Betances and Chapman. By the by, Miller has a good shot to be an All Star this July.

I told SanDawg I watched a buddy of mine’s 12th grade girls Asian club team that talks and communicates constantly on the floor. this is HS stuff–bump cutters so they don’t run free and talk on defense on screens.

Yadier Molina sure having trouble catching this guy. Just seems like he is on downhill of career offensively too.

I watched a good part of the second half of the Warriors’ W at a sports bar, simultaneously seeing the Giants take the lead and then collapse sloppily. Talk about contrasts. By the way, on the ESPN radio coverage, on the drive over (I don’t have a TV), Hubie Brown was all “for the Cavs to win this” and “the Cavs are going to have to do this in the second half.” You’d have thought Cleveland had no opponent. It was a “Cleveland is losing” not a “Golden State was winning” take. Well, the Warriors took care of that.

  The talking heads on TV and radio that are “national” generally talk as if the West doesn’t exist. Nothing new. Everything is East centric. The Dubs have been the best team now for 2 seasons, hands down. Still, there is only grudging respect from the East, as if the Dubs are somehow not worthy or cheating or something. Why? because nobody in the East knows them well. LeBron gets on TV all the time back there — he’s so amazing, he must have a good chance to win, even though the Dubs won nearly 20 more games than his team. Same thing when the Giants were winning playoffs. It’s as if they didn’t exist, and apparently still don’t. For some of the media, it’s as if 2010,12, 14 never happened. If the Yankees had done that, we’d be hearing about it incessantly…

Until yesterday, it had likely been a couple of weeks since the Dogs actually gained any ground on the Giants, so that was a nice run. Now they’ve picked up 2 games in 2 days. Hope they’re not going on a good run, but if the G’s just take care of business, it won’t matter. About Peavy, Bochy might want to lower Jake’s pitch count as a deciding factor of when to remove him. It was fairly low thru 5, I think, as Steve and others pointed out, pitched well thru that point, but he is just not a 100-pitch, 8-inning kinda guy anymore.

Leaving St. Louis on a loss is disappointing. However, as Mac noted, we were 5-5 on this road trip, which I will take. However, as he also noted, it could have easily been a better trip, especially in Atlanta.

    Thank you Mac . . . Going to view it in a moment. I spent most of the morning and a lot of last night, reading articles about Ali. New York Times had some really good articles and old newspaper stories (interesting looking at the advertisements too). Still hard to believe he is gone . . . Ironically, he sort of died – for me at least – when I found out he had Parkinson’s disease in 1984. I choose to remember him as full of life and himself, prior to his latter fights, where he was becoming a shell of himself. I truly believe he might not have gotten Parkinson’s disease, had he not fought Frazier in Manila and definitely, Holmes and Berbick.

Hey there Blade .. you are correct about the Bisbee AZ weather. It isn’t exactly cool in the Summer even though it is mile high desert. Still, it should be a bit of an improvement over Fresno temperatures which can rival Phoenix for heat. The least favorable part about Fresno is an air quality index that ranks near worst in the nation. Bisbee air is thin but clean.

I’ve been complaining since early in the season about the Giants overall weak offense. I understand this is a grind-it-out type of team but at this point the lack of offense has become a chronic situation exacerbated by the loss of Pence; Belt is the only healthy player that is producing consistently. Most of you have stated that Posey will come around. Maybe you are right, he will. But is it going to be a case of too little, too late?

It seems our potential batting champ 2nd bass man is morphing into a light hitting .270 type of player and the sophomore blues have tethered any similar wild aspirations some of us had for Duffy. Span is just “ok” and Craw is producing about normal for him. The bench is a slight improvement over last year’s but that ain’t saying much. Defense has been excellent for the most part. But it’s not helping any positive situation when we cannot score when given opportunities to do so. Pitching has been stellar. Without that we would be in deep doo doo.

I don’t think trading prospects for more mid level players is a lasting solution to anything. We are overrun with middling offensive players — or at least players that we possibly misjudged to be better than they actually are.

There is still a long season ahead and there aren’t any easy fixes. Maybe we simply need more time for our guys to get their bats going. Yet, with our lead atop the division slowly eroding, time may not be our friend.

I’m happy to have the cushion we have but feeling frustrated watching this constant parade of winnable games being tossed on to the pile of defeats. Wish I had a solution but I don’t have anything to offer other than “watch and see”.

  Lisle, I’ll take the other side of the coin approach.
  The Giants as is have won 35 games–only team in all of baseball with more Ws would be Cubs.
  Top end of rotation is very good and I can tolerate back end.
  Defense has also been very good tho it let them down last night.
  Belt is much improved at cutting down the Ks. Posey is an AS so is Crawford and I like Span.
  Bench being much improved will be a big help as team deals with injuries.
  Hope pen issues sort themselves out once Romo returns.
  Still think this team is class of division over LA…win the division and then ride SPs in short playoffs.
  
  Hey, after game walked into local whole foods ($20 limit always) and heard Wilson Pickett version of Rodger Collins “She’s Looking Good” which I have on vinyl somewhere. Great Muscle shoals horns, Tommy Cogbill and Roger Hawkins on bass and drums.
  And yeah there were some examples of what makes America great in cutoff denim shorts. The wicked man screaming over the horns on the out chorus and some fine gals, doesn’t get much better than that.

    I’m not sensing you are so much on the “other side”. I’m just saying the offense is what it is … weak. Sure, Posey was an AS but you cannot seriously tell me his production so far earns him that honor this year. Craw gives us consistently spectacular defense and he is one of the rare players that could deserve to be an AS on that alone. Panic & Duffy, such magnificent contributors over the past two seasons, are hitting below expectations. I too am ok with Span. Yet, in the climate of this offense we are going to need a bit more from the SP and BP. Can the SP really give any more? The BP is what it is and nobody special is waiting in the wings it seems.
    
    When all the pitchers are playing from a pressure situation where they know they cannot make one tiny mistake because they won’t get any support from the bats … Well, that will wear anyone out quickly and thoroughly.
    
    The only place I don’t agree with you is that the bench is “much improved”. It is improved, but not by much. Do you think Gillaspie and his .195 is an improvement over that forgettable guy we had last year off the bench: Mr. No Clutch?
    
    I agree the division is ripe for the taking and anything can happen in the playoffs.
