Failing to Step Up
Another come-from-ahead loss.
We said. Could easily be the headline to today’s thread. Boston, as I expected, didn’t come into our park and blast the ball to the moon as Kruk and Kuip seemed to think they were going to do. But they were professional hitters and that was all it took.
We were minus Pence and Posey. Other guys have to step up. The roster isn’t 8 guys and a bunch of pitchers. The rest of the players are paid very well to be ready when their number is called.
I’m not optimistic about tonight. Probably a low scoring game. Maybe Babe Bumgarner wins it for us…..
I was REALLY on Bochy and Casilla last night, but agree with others, that there was plenty of blame to spread around. I was only half-kidding when I said last night that “maybe Lisle is right…maybe our 0ffense is weak.” Three runs against a team like Boston is not going to get it done on a regular basis. Granted, as Flav mentions, we are missing two of our biggest sticks, but it does point out what we all already know, and that is that the margin for error with this team is very slim. Last night they erred just a bit too much in a multitude of areas.
I am with SanDiggity on his 10:39, now that I had some time to sleep on this one.
But I still say that they have two glaring needs right now, and they need to be addressed sooner rather than later.
1) I still feel they need to go trade for a quality OFer (NOT a stop-gap). Someone who can step in and play every day, and will be a viable option for a couple of years (since Pagan is PaGONE next year, and the marathon man – Pence – has seemed to developed some chinks in his armor).
2) A solid bullpen arm. Someone mentioned Andrew Miller of the YankMees the other day, and I agree…we need a guy like that who can give you a couple of innings and is good against both lefties and righties. (Kind of like Affeldt in his prime).
Problem is, I don’t see Sabevans getting on either of these anytime soon. So, If they do not go get an OFer, then as someone else mentioned, start Parker REGULARLY. Let the kid start in 25 or so consecutive games and get some decent ABs, so they will truly know what they have.
Get us a W, Zumiee – and we will be anticipating the pictures.
I will be following via LameDay this evening. Going to see a young singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist named Sarah Jarosz that I have wanted to see for a very long time at a killer small venue in Grass Valley. Should be one kick-ass show.
GO GIANTS!
From that piece someone posted yesterday, it does not appear that the Yanks will be parting with Miller on the cheap. But his numbers are dominant and it would be nice to have him on the team. And when the hell is Romo coming back?
Romo last did long-toss from 75 feet (this in the past few days) and Bochy said yesterday or the day before that he will increase that to 120 feet, soon. He has not thrown from a mound, and with his recent set-back, I do not believe there is a definitive timeline. Sucks.
I forgot Zumiee is going today. “Make it so”. This one is in the bag……
Tough pill to swallow last night. I don’t like to blame one play, but Crawford’s missed tag was the difference in what would’ve been a nice win for the Giants and Albert Suarez, He pitched well enough to win.
The Warriors can make it all better by smoking the Cavs tonight
I went back and watched that play again and I think it would have been a routine double play if the shift hadn’t been on. As it was I’ve got to give credit to Young for slowing the play down and dodging the tag.
Andrew Miller seems like too “splashy” of a name for me. That’s not Sabes m.o. I defineltly don’t see them trading Beede for a reliever. I am sure the next Affeldt or Lopez can be had for much less.
In fact the Astros had offered up Vince Velazquez for Miller last offseason and the Yanks turned it down. They ended up trading Velazquez to Philly for Ken Giles, who is basically Hunter Strickland. Velazquez has been one of the leagues best young starters and Giles is well, Hunter Strickland.
I don’t think the Yankees would even do it for Beede. They have very little experience in selling at this time of year and Miller is one of their best players. Would have to get a big haul to pull the trigger and the Giants would never offer a big haul for Miller. Some other team, maybe.
I understand fellas, and was not suggesting Miller specifically (someone else had mentioned his name). I agree, he is probably too costly, but it is a big definite that our bullpen need some help. Maybe it will all come around with the horses we have, but I am not holding my breath…
I had mentioned it at one point because at the time we were all talking about OFers. I’d imagine the Giants have had discussions that included OFers and BP arms with multiple teams by now. But I still don’t think they’ll pull the trigger on anything until we get closer to the deadline.
These kinds of losses just kind of gnaw at me. Miss a play. Fail to take advantage of mistakes. Get burned when you make one . . . on and on. Yeah, there are many way to win and lose. But blowing late leads seems to be the oeurve of the month.
And yeah we all know that scoring so low gives little room for error. Or none as recent results have shown,
And Sorry S-Dog . . Cleveland’s going down hard tonight. If there is any team that comes in for the kill when there’s blood in the water, it’s OBDs.
I am still on for a Cha-Cha bowl SanD, if you accept the bet.
Bullpen help is on the way. Well, maybe in a couple of years. Pitching for San Jose, 22 y.o. reliever Rodolfo Martinez sports a 0.79 ERA, having given a grand total of 2 earnies in 24 IP. Opposing hitters have managed 19 knocks and 8 walks over those 24 and his strikeouts equal his innings pitched. BA against him is .213 and his WHIP stands at 1.11.
Is Martinez our closer of the future? Too early to tell, but so far this season he has racked up 16 saves in 17 opportunities ~ a tad preferable to our current ML closer. With those ridiculous stats it’s likely he will not be long for High A. He pitched in 50 games in his previous time in the minors and most of them were starts. So my read there is that he brings some heat, but probably lacks the secondary pitches to be an effective starter. His 8-24 BB-K ratio indicates that he has few problems with control ~ another sought after quality in late-inning relievers.
I’m expecting he gets a ticket to Richmond sometime in mid-Summer.
I appreciate the info, Stix, but we need help NOW. I think the window of opportunity to nail down that next WS title is limited. This team is prime, IMO, with a few tweaks here and there (OFer and reliever).
I’m sticking with my Cavs pick for tonight. Too much talent to get swept and I’ve seen it too many times when a team gets pronounced dead prematurely based on one bad night.
And that free Cha-Cha bowl is going to be outstanding!
..and Chuck, you have to explain that Black Mariah reference you made last night. I was spewing out posts at a prolific clip last night, so I’m not sure which of them you were responding to with that one.
Was it my Todd Rundgren reference?
One bad night? Steph and Curry were non-existent, and they got blown out.
Hah! You got it Dog! Yes. One of my favorite Todd Rundgren songs of all time.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTtIbgRr1KU
Saw him do a one man show in a room full of computers, synthesizers, and guitars. It was insane. Some tiny club in the city in the late 80s.
S-dog – I will take that bet on a Cha-Cha bowl too, if you are game. I mean, if you can afford to pay out for a couple of them. 😉 What says you? No balls, no blue chips…
Cleveland will get smoked tonight if they continue to go “small line up” and do isolation plays with Lebron and Irving. James has more than doubled his isolation usage and Irving has almost doubled his. However, only James has had success, averaging 1.05 pts per direct isolation in these finals. Conversely, Irving is only averaging 0.15 . . . Frankly, Lue will have to come up with another “answer” to the Warriors because what he’s tried is failing miserably.
Giants? Not even worried about what is going on. I still think the Dodgers have way more issues versus our roster. Still so early in the season and we’re up by 3 games in the division.
Can’t see an Andrew Miller deal going down. He’s under control with decent contract.
The guy who isn’t and might actually be available is…Chapman, caveat being he’s an FA next year.
Supposedly, even for Miller, Yanks would want an SP ready to go ml level for next year, plus. What Giant(s) would that be?
And I’m sure every discussion with Evans starts with Arroyo.
Haven’t heard much about him, btw— what is Arroyo doing? What position is he playing?
WD: Arroyo is having a mediocre to partly fair season so far for Richmond. OPB is nothing to brag about while power is miniscule. Granted, the Eastern League is a tough venue for hitters as most of the AL and NL East teams stock it with their best pitching talent. Still early in the season, though, and Arroyo is not very long in the tooth. Ditto, Ryder Jones.
A guy I always liked, at least the few times I have seen him, is Sean Doolittle across the bay. He would be a great late inning guy, just don’t close with him. Of course it will be a dark day in hell before Beane trades with Sabevans.
Remember too, this is Romo’s walk year. He’s pitched 3 innings so far and is still a little ways away. Do you re-sign him for a couple more if he shows he’s still got it (at least vs. RH)?
Chapman is making $11 mil plus, so what would his next deal cost–3 yrs at $50? Want to go that route for a closer to pitch maybe 50 innings?
Giants have to get through this year, but going forward looking a lot hazier.
My pet peeve of the day:
I am hurriedly (is that even a word?) trying to text someone on my phone a message and I hit send. It reads “I am so ducking pissed off right now!”
Really Apple autocorrect? I am trying to quickly (hurriedly?) display my current sense of utter displeasure and this is what you think I want to say?
Sorry, this just happened to me so I had to get it off my chest.
LMAO. I love Apple products (have an iPhone and MacBook Pro), but yes, their predictive typing/autocorrect is infuriating.
One good thing about last night, Casilla can’t get all butt hurt when Boch pulls him the next time he starts losing it. He had his shot and blew it.
Regarding escalating salaries? All major sports will go down significantly in the next 5 years. Again, as I have indicated previously – ESPN is losing subscribers at a phenomenal rate and their last deals with the various sports leagues, will expire 5-7 years from now. NFL, MLB, and NBA players better enjoy the money now and more important, not waste what they have earned, because you have seen the last of the big league and television contracts between the networks, Cable, and Satellite outfits.
That’s a great point Blade! I wonder how that will affect the collective bargaining agreements moving forward? I sense a shit storm coming from the players if those contacts don’t keep up with traditional baseball inflation, which has been thru the roof for so long now.
Maybe only a few truly great stars get the big bucks (in all sports). Salaries have hit critical mass and soon, there will be no money to pay the exorbitant salaries sports stars have become use to.
Comcast, actually bucked the trend of cord cutting . . . Sort of. They supposedly added 53,000 subscribers this last quarter versus losing 8,000 in the same quarter last year. However, Like most cable companies, Comcast also seems to be doing not a bad job of shifting customers to lower-priced “skinny bundles” so that it doesn’t lose them completely. Some analysts also point out that Comcast is including subscribers to its own Stream TV over-the-top service in its numbers.
It’s not all sunshine and kittens, however. Comcast may have added subscribers overall, but its NBCUniversal unit reported some weakness in subscriber numbers, saying growth in revenue was “partially offset by a decline in subscribers at our cable networks.” In other words, NBC is clearly losing subscribers to something, and Comcast may be trading long-time subscribers for newer customers who are less valuable as a result of discounts, promotions etc.
You have to remember, that Comcast (and others) also make money from WiFi connections. In fact, Comcast was penalizing heavy users (those above 300GB monthly data caps) to make up what they were losing from cable . . . They saw the error of their ways and have bumped that up to 1000GB because they didn’t stem the tide of cord cutters. Here’s a good site regarding how to cut the cord and find alternatives . . . This is just one, there are many:
http://icutcable.com/
By the by, say goodbye to Facebook too . . . Just kidding . . . Maybe. If you don’t have AdBlocker on your phone or a similar app (AdBlocker Plus Browser), then you’re behind the times. Similarly, I have AdBlock on my PC for Safari, Google and FireFox browsers. Facebook is being severely affected by these apps and browsers. Same deal for other sites that depend on advertising. Twitter? Unless they can monetize it – which they have failed to do so thus far since its inception, it will be gone too or will be a freebie app that never makes money for its investors. Already, thousands of investors have taken a bath on this company.
Funny you mention Comcast. I literally just got off the phone with a CSR trying to upsell me some ridiculous package. I told her that I was glad she called because I had been meaning to cancel my new internet service with them. I constantly lose connection on both my laptop and IPhone in the house. I am just going to stick with my Verizon MiFi. Comcast ducking sucks.
I have always said that sooner or later the golden egg is going to be gone, then where are teams going to get the money to pay these over priced players! I can hardly wait to see how all that unfolds.
Chi, have a great time at the show!
She’s great.
I’ll post some ballgame photos on Facebook. I don’t know how to post them at the Flap.
I’m amused how my cellphone always suggests Ugly instead of Utley.
Kevin Love is out for Game 3.
Cha Cha Bowls will be affected.
lulz
Love has been pretty invisible so far so I don’t see much of an impact.
The Cavs had their best games last year with Mosgov in the lineup. I’m betting he’ll be in there tonight. If the W’s come out with good defensive intensity, I’m confident they’ll win. The Cavs just don’t have the horses.
I thought Cleveland was better off last year without Love as he’s such a blob defensively. Course Tristan Thompson was in foul trouble in game 2 and Love was nothing before he got hurt, and Irving is not a defender, so what little defense they had was gone. And they can’t score like the Warriors. LBJ is a great player, but he can’t carry the team. Their only chance is to slow the game to a snail’s pace.
As the Dubs showed in game 1, they have a much deeper bench.
That being said, the Cavs spent the whole season trying to become a faster higher scoring team. Especially when they traded for Frye. They got Frye to be their gunner and become more like the Warriors, but they have left him on the bench so the only guy that can remotely shoot 3s is sitting.
Well, with Love out, maybe they will finally play him. He and Mosgov just don;t work well together so it’ll be interesting to see how they rotate now.
Tonight’s matchup: Price vs. half-price.
lulz
Good dog!
Tonight’s lineup is….interesting….
“Fun Fact”
San Francisco left fielders have combined for only three home runs in 2016. Duvall has nearly 6 times that amount (17).
“Fun Fact, Part II”
Duvall leads all left fielders with nine defensive runs saved this season.
Fun fact: the Giants blew that one.
Well, no one can say we don’t develop outfielders . . . We just export them to other teams.
The exact start the W’s didn’t want to have. Standing around, loose with the ball, AGAIN, and unable to hit the broadside of a barn. They’ve not had one game in these playoffs where they came out with a hot start. They seem incapable of it.
Steph’s focus this off-season should be to work on taking care of the fucking ball. He’s too good to be constantly turning it over.
The worse part of a start like this is that we have to hear the three stooges gush over the Cavaliers.
This is what happens when you don’t show up for a game. Read your press clippings boys then get back at it Friday. Embarrassing effort, Kerr.
Hilarious LJ. Game isn’t over.
It is now! 😉
lulz . . . You probably were locked and loaded, ready to send that.
Did san dog poison the Warriors pre-game meal???
That was a dirty play by Mosgov. Dude is nothing more than thug. HB is doing a nice job of bringing some offense.
Barnes is off to a great start on both ends.
Getting it to 7 at the half was pretty damn impressive feat.
“Fire on the Mountain” playing. Bum’s song.
Jesus. A more ragged half you’ll never see. Steph is playing awful. Thompson is going to have to take it. I was telling my son they should just be forgoing the 3!s because Cleve is defending out there pretty well but we are scoring inside easily.
Still think we run away with this. If we played this bad vs OKC we’d be down 35.
Bron Bron is missing shit So that helps.
Dubs MO is to put pedal to metal in Q3. I’m primed and ready with a pint of Evil Twin here at the brew pub, so let’s go Dubs…
LJ, I mentioned just that earlier today. Cleve’s only chance is to drag the game down intonthe gutter.
Held that Steph is cold as Ice…
Helps
I bet after series we’ll find out Steph’s knee is messed up worse than they let on, ala Giants…
Curry looks to be moving pretty well to me. His head just isn’t in the game.
This one is looking like a write off. I don’t know where Curry’s head is, but he’d better find it quick. The media will be howling with glee after this one. Miserable effort pretty much all the way around.
I just don’t understand how a team can go from looking so good to looking like this, complete shit.
This may be the one the Cavs get, but we’ ll see, Dubs can go on a run at anytime…
I missed the Orioles-Royals fight last night. So when my kid was showing it on Sportscenter the first thing I noticed was how Salvador Perez just sort of jogged out there instead of running to the defense of his pitcher. Tells me that Ventura’s teammates don’t give a crap about him.
Would anyone here give up Beede for him?? I would be awfully tempted…even if we stuck him in the bullpen, we would have him as a starter next year…
Tom, what brew pub and where is it are you hangin’ these days commenting on the Flap? Sounds like fun. I miss hanging out at a good Bay Area pub watchin’ sports….
depending on situation, usually First street alehouse in Livermore, or Handles or Hopyard in Pleasanton; all different…
Yikes. Nice play by Duff and Zbelt
Fucking Warriors are gluing this one up. Still think Cleve chokes this tho.
Belt makes his “Scoop Du Jour”…
“Cactus Mac” really sucks, but I’m pushing the nickname…
Diggity you can hold out for a Cha Cha bowl or I could buy you a Del Mar dog and a beer when we hook up next month. Your call……
I’d hold out for the bone-in Veal Parmesan at the Pamplemousse Grille.
You know, a “Ted Williams gives good head” tee shirt, would have made some lasting friendships tonight.
Amy G should sue her dentist.
Worst porcelain veneers ever.
Her mouth looks like a stall shower…
That is awesome!
Once in a while it would be nice for giants to get a lead early…
Mr. Belt.
Curry is like that nursery rhyme “when he is good he is very very good but when he is bad….”
If you were a casual fan just tuning into tonight’s game, you would be wondering how this guy ever won back to back MVP’s. That’s how bad he looks. LJ is right, the media will have fun with this one. I still think we see the “very verry good” Curry a couple more times to close this series out.
First splash HR by a Giant since Sept. 2014 according to K&K…
Wow. BB where are you?
I think that one was the “Splash-Off” hit by Crawdad. All 3 of my kids AND my ex-wife were at that game, but I was not. I’m still bitter I missed out on that moment.
Gawd. I didn’t think they could make Cleve look like a good team
Steph has been pretty ducky lately.
I feel your pain. See my 9:18 post from this morning.
Sucky you fucking phone.
Take one on their house and they are toast. Even if they don’t they still have home field advantage.
Cha-CHa-CHA Sports Fans!
How do you like me now??
Flav, you’ve got a sketchy history regarding hot dogs, so I’m gonna stick with the Cha Cha Bowl , thank you very much!
You gonna double down for Game 4?
I dunno know. I’m gonna revel in my amazing prediction that so many scoffed at for 24 hours or so and then see what kind of vibes I’m picking up for Game 4. 🃏
WTF? Did Amy borrow Mr Ed’s teeth?
She brushes them with Tilex…
Well, one ot of four an’t bad…
In baseball.
Sucks in bsketball tho.
Bummie s getting wild. Balls been up all nght
The Red Sox version of Amy G ain’t hard on the eyes, I’ll tell you that.
Zumiee, if you’re monitoring the Flap – I’m curious about Red Sox fans attending the game? A lot of them (what %)? At Coors, there could be upwards of 40-50% Red Sox fans when they visit. Same deal for the Cubs, Dodgers and Giants.
They put Joe and Jennifer Montana on the Kiss Cam. Very cool.
Probably not for them…
Yeah, especially as Joe elbowed her in the chin. MLB just showed it.
Wheel of Bullpen . . . Hope we don’t land on “Bankrupt.”
Wheel of Bullpen, lulz.
How the fuck did that not go out?
Probably some irregularity in the orbit of Neptune…
Wind knocked it down.
Kuip saying that was gone in any other yard is ridiculous…
Goddamn, I thought that was going out.
Shout out to James . . . Last night you said Duffy was the most undisciplined of all the Giants starters, his walk rate being lousy. I took you at your word until I just checked out the stats. NICE JOB OF MASSAGING THE STATS MY MAN. He’s in a group of 5 Giants with between 18 (him and Posey) and 23. Negligible IMO.
Blade, there was no massaging of the stats. Duffy has 246 plate appearances, second most on the team. He has the lowest walk percentage of the starters. He is a highly unintelligent hitter :).
So, it follows that you believe Posey is as well? By the by, you should go see who led last year in walks. Yes, the same guy who is in last this year . . . Posey.
By the by, you took that much time to respond? lulz
Also, you’ve made it worse by saying “of the starters.” Again, massaging the stats. Fact of the matter is that he is tied for 7th (or 6th, since Posey has the same total). There is no 8th starter, unless you count Pagan, Blanco, etc., who all have shared starts for various reasons.
“There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.”
ok . . . .
Blade, probably about 40% Red Sox fans here. Sad.
Seriously? The horror, the horror . . . 😦
Maybe 30%. I may have misjudged.
Yes, indeed! Mac Attack!
Big Mac!!!
Let’s roll with this Mac/Parker/Span OF and see where it takes us. Throw Gregor out there on Sundays…
Kid’s 1st round tripper!
Mac giveth the lead, but will Casilla giveth away?
Shades of Freddie Lew!
That was so awesomely bad, I cackled so loud it scared the dog.
No. Mac giveth away.
Mac the Knife. And now ……
Torture.
ARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH! Are you shitting me?
Fuck me.
This kind of misplay gets Casilla agitated…
It gets me agitated too.
That kind of misplay would get Mr. Rogers agitated.
Ay-yi-yi.
