Must See TV
I’m not sure if you could put together a bigger sports evening if you could hand picked the events. OBD take on the Cav’s in Game 4. In light of their utter dismantling in Game 3 this now becomes an extremely interesting game.
If you somehow aren’t interested in that you can glue your attention to Giants/Dodgers and Kershaw.
It doesn’t get any better.
Rounds 3-10 of the draft today are not televised. There’s only 1 minute between each pick. That’s pretty wild.
The Giants snagged Belt with a 5th round pick.
One of the great inventions- the TV remote control. Flip back and forth.
Classic! Love me some Rodney…
Hey, I don’t get no respect!
Watching the Ali funeral procession while I work. Everyone keeps throwing flowers on the hood and windshield of the hearse, there is now just a small open space, for the driver to see in front of him. You know he wants to turn on the wipers but that would be too disrespectful. Man, what a quagmire!
This is a carry-over from the end of the last thread. There are a few Flappers who are pessimistic about Pence returning in the estimated eight weeks, with some saying they will be surprised if he is back by September and some saying that he may not play again this year.
I disagree, and offer you a wager of one adult beverage of choice. I say Pence is back before August 25th.
Dubs need to get some damn rebounds…
Love nights like this with multiple games going on. There was a day within the last few weeks where the Giants, Sharks, and Warriors all had games on the same day. My remote was getting quite the workout that night!
I will be bouncing between the two games. Should be fun!
Go Giants! Go Warriors!
And man would I love to be at the Shark Tank on Sunday…unfortunately it is just not in the cards…saving my coin for Blade’s and my trip to Boston/NYC…it may be a bit costly keeping Loo in adult beverages! 😉
I thought this was a nice read on our first round pick yesterday. http://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2016/6/9/11899630/sf-giants-draft-bryan-reynolds-pick
Grant Bisbee writes some good pieces over there but the comments are lame. This place has a much better mix of insightful, relevant observations with a good mix of humor thrown in. Really, what more can you ask for?
I didn’t read any of the comments, but I was getting a kick out of how the “experts” differed on where Reynolds would go in the draft.
Yeah it was nice to see a consensus that he was likely a first round pick. Sounds like some teams were afraid of the sign abilty issue but that has never been a problem for the Giants.
Good call Wilco, yeah the Giants do seem to know a guy will sign with them before they make that pick.
Cool! Nice pick. I’d like to see them even draft a couple of more outfielders today.
TBDD (Throw Back Draft Day?) – Good call by the Giants in 08.

What a reminder how crucial the draft is. KC did well in that draft, too, and it paid off for them.
Every good sports blog has to have just the right amount of GIF placements. Zumiee is our GIF oracle.
Agreed.
Thanks; one of the great things the internet gave the world: gifs. 🙂
And I agree: McCovey Chronicle commenters are lame. I’m guessing a lot of them are people that jumped on the Giants bandwagon in the last 6 or 7 years.
Agree with Wilco re: this blog vs. just about anything else sports-related out there. We have a very good mix here. James with the stats. Loo, Stix, and others with knowledge of past players, etc., that is sometimes mind-boggling. And yes, a good mix of humor (no loss of smart-asses here). I think we have the best of all worlds here. And with that, thanks to Flavor again for making it all possible! Flap Universe, baby!
Hip Hip Hooray to the almighty Flavormeister for keeping the best SF Giants blog going!!
And to the Flap Universe of knuckleheads this Bud’s for you 🍻🍺🍻🍺🍻🍺
Appreciate the sentiment Kat, but my brewski of first choice is Nordeast, by Grain Belt. The more belting done by BB9, the more excuse i have to down another Nordeast in honor of the occasion. Too bad for you guys but i suspect it is not available on either coast ~ just here in the flyover grain belt of America.
I am sure it is a tasty brew, Stix, but there are so many damned good microbreweries out here that I am not ever at want for a great brew.
I’m not sure I’ll be able to see either game tonight. Some friends of ours are making their annual trip here to the OBX. Not sure where we’re meeting them at, but its probably an outdoor thing. I’m still holding out hope it’s in a bar (with TVs).
If not at home the Bar is always the next option for me Clown.. Place to get my skink on…
Fish fry, Kat. Was able to get home and turn the game on (already down by two in the first). So I get to do my skink hunting at home.
Yes I have to say I have learned a lot about baseball from everyone here. Unfortunately it did not translate to being good at Fantasy Baseball leagues. 😱😱😱😰😰😰
I just hope I don’t have that look on Rodney’s face as these games progress.
Watching the Ali service . . . Awesome folks mourning him. A Jewish rabi speaker is especially well spoken and says (paraphrasing), ” We will not tolerate anyone scapegoating Muslims . . . ” Standing ovation.
In 15 starts at AT&T, Kershaw has allowed 17 total runs. He has only allowed more than 2 runs at AT&T, one time, when he allowed 4 runs in a game last year.
I don’t have the numbers handy, but I think his W/L record career-wise is only about .500, overall, against the Giants.
7-2 0.69 era. 0.80 whip.
9-3, 1.23, 0.778 now. Baseball Reference has just about everything.
Overall he’s 17-7 vs the Giants, 1.60 era 0.81 whip
Fuck Kershaw’s numbers…I say the Dreadlocked Dominican and the Giants put a whoop ass on dem bums tonight.
How about Marichal at Candlestick vs. Dodgers?
I copied this off something but it’s accurate:
In Los Angeles, the Dodgers won a respectable 14 of 30 decisions against the high-kicking righty. 400 miles up the coast, it was another story. From 1961 to 1973, Marichal faced the men in blue caps a total of 31 times on the Giants’ windswept turf (30 as a starter plus one relief appearance). Towards the end of his illustrious career, when injuries began to take their toll on his six-foot frame, the Dodgers got the best of the future Hall of Famer. In their last four encounters in San Francisco, Los Angeles defeated Marichal three times.
Before those losses, however, Marichal owned the Giants’ arch-rivals in a way that defies belief. When the native of Laguna Verde, the Dominican Republic, blanked them in May 1971, the 1-0 victory ran his home record against Los Angeles to 21 and 1.
That’s pretty darned amazing.
If the situation calls for it, I hope Bochy will not hesitate to use Bumgarner as a PH vs. Kershaw.
Lifetime: 4-18 (2 HRS)
It’ll likely be a 2-1 whoop-ass.
Might go to the game tomorrow. First game this year.
PH ing is fine. If Bummie enters the home run derby, I’ll be pissed.
Never happen…
Specs on DL with sprained left thumb.
INF Ramiro Pena called up from Sacto. And Romo put on 60-day DL to make room for Pena.
I thought the name was familiar. Former Yank:
http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/penara02.shtml
I guess he won’t be at Yankees Old-Timers’ Day on Sunday.
Chuck, thanks for the Kershaw W/L numbers. I was off the mark on that. I think it’s closer to .500 in the games the last few years, but not the earlier years. In fact, I sort of remember Timmy losing to him 1-0 a couple of times in the earlier years.
After a brutal few days of driving – 107° crossing Mojave desert with no ac in my jam packed 84 VW Westfalia (had to run with heat on full to keep the VW from overheating) – arrived safe & sound in Bisbee, AZ. First order of business was the purchase of MLB TV .. have no internet yet so will incure huge data overages watching us on my phone hammer Opie tonite … fuck it!
Glad you made it. Hope it all works out for you.
Thanks kindly Stix!
Perfect Loo .. u nailed it .. thats xactly how I feel, like I crawled outta some year long hostile jungle swamp battle .. FUCK IT!
Will attend the regular Sunday Tucson Saguaros (Pecos League) game on at historic Warren Ballpark, two blocks from my house.
Warren Ballpark opened in June of 1909. In November 1913, the Chicago White Sox & NY Giants played there as part of an international tour to promote interest in baseball. Purportedly, the game featured future HOFs Tris Speaker, Sam Crawford, Ray Schalk, John McGraw and Red Faber. Also participating was 1912 Olympian, Jim Thorpe.
The now defunkt Bisbee Bees was, at various times, the farm club for the Cubs, Angels & Yankees. Billy Martin played many times at Warren when he played for the Phoenix Senators in 1947.
I had never heard or Bisbee, AZ so I just looked it up on Yelp. Looks like a cool little town. Very eclectic. Some good looking little restaurants in town as well. They actually have an Americana Music Festival every spring (there ya go Zum). Might get a little dusty if that wall gets built, though.
Thats gonna be my next employment. Building the “Wall” .. I wont make much .. paid only in Pesos because Mexican Govt is paying for it.
Yes, the music fest takes place in Lowell a town within the town of Bizbee . Lowell is one long block of 50s era vintage shops, cars, theatre, gas station, police station (with period black & white parked in front) and bar .. very quaint. I live in Warren another town within the town of Bisbee.
I had a VW and Isuzu Impulse where I had to blast that heater in 100 degree weather with all the windows down to keep from overheating…good times….
Yeah, it wasnt so bad .. kept my self hydrated .. my drivers side kept slipping which was more annoying than the overheating .. mine is a camper van .. had it loaded with most all my basses one upright and eight acoustic bass guitars.
`Mirror` was the missing word above.
“my drivers side kept slipping”
What do you mean BB? By the by, same here – glad you made it ok.
Thanks Blade, appreciate it .. “.. drivers side mirror kept slipping ..”
At first, I thought either you were slipping out of the drivers chair for some reason, e.g., drunk or high on peyote; or your bus shell was slipping from the chassis/frame.
I’m doing a slow burn about Tommy Joseph. Sort of.
I know we got Hunter Pence – who’s been invaluable – for him, Seth Rosin (who?) and Nate Schierholtz, but the dude is doing a fairly good impression of Adam Duvall (another one that got away). What’s really amazing is that he only has a part time gig with the Phils. Imbecile manager and/or the GM keeps trotting out Ryan Howard, who you could have put a fork in . . . umm, let’s say 5 years ago. Anywho, he just went yard against Strasberg.
Joseph was our #2 ranked prospect at the time he was traded. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHO OUR NUMERO UNO PROSPECT WAS?*
*An outfielder no doubt . . . Maybe we could have traded his dufus ass to the Phils. 🙂
When I was at the game the other day, I stopped by the first level to see again the permanent trophy and ring display. All that beautiful shining hardware makes all the trades worth it. 🙂 Even the ones that don’t work out as well, like Wheeler and Duvall. The Giants are really going for it on a yearly basis, while this great window of opportunity is open, and there’s going to be some good prospects that get dealt once in a while, even this year maybe.
Yes, you’re right of course. 🙂
But I still want to know who our #1 rated prospect was at the time Joseph was dealt??? I am guessing Gary Brown. Too bad we couldn’t have dealt his ass instead.
Good point. 🙂
Could it have been Christian Arroyo .. he is ranked pretty high but maybe too early for him?
Yep. Way too early. Same for Beebe.
At least Brown’s lucky bongo head paid off…
Amazes me that the NBA allows music/noise to be pumped over the PA while play is going on. No other major sport does this. I think it started in the ’90’s. I imagine there was some sort of referendum on this – even though I don’t really know what a referendum is…
And it’s fuckin’ annoying…
Cavs basically tackling Curry when he moves without the ball…
It’s open season on all the Warriors.
Can we get robo refs for the NBA too?
Jesus, I called the balk 10 seconds before the ump.
It was blatant…
Cueto did the fuckin’ mambo in the middle of his delivery.
Of course Kruk said it was a bad call…
Looks like this one is over.
Duffy yanks a dinger!!!
One of those line drives finally pays off. He got all of that one.
Pull, Duffy, Pull!!!
Snowball had no problem.
Belt and Crawford are a combined 4 for 65 against Kershaw. That has to get better or we’re always going to struggle against this guy. Williamson looked like a blind guy in his first AB.
Cactus Mac looked like a bad hitting pitcher batting against Kershaw…
Doubt it will ever get better. Lefty against lefty never augers well (Kershaw has the platoon advantage). I checked stats individually for all our starters this evening and Posey (as we all would suspect) is the only one with a half decent chance against him. Prior to this game, Duffy was 5 for 25 against him – not bad, but not earth shattering.
Giant fans at ATT are distracted and cheering for OBD…
Sheezus, I’ve seen less contact in a Niners v Browns game…
And the real pisser is the one they missed at the end of the 1st half..Iggy should have been shooting three…
The lost art of boxing out…
Holy shit…buckle up for the 4th Q…
Why is mc adobo playing this much? Guy has a body, no skills…
If try Ezeli for a few to rim protect…
See your own 8:00 PM post.
Almost like you’re playing Jeopardy with yourself…
Maybe one of the fun twins, Mac/Parker, will run into one like Duffy did.
Sign of the times:
‘K’ corner signs with Draft Kings logo on flip side…
Barnes!
Any relation to the late Jim “Bad News” Barnes?
What an all-time great nickname.
Knicks drafted him first over all in ’64.
In round 2 they took Willis Reed…
I have no idea, Loo. Now that would be a cool story if there was a relationship. And that is a bad ass nickname!
At least their not calling fouls for either side right now, instead letting them play. I can live with that.
Me too, Wilco. As long as they are consistent that way, I am all good. I would rather watch a game with some hand-checking, etc., than one where they call every fucking ticky-tacky foul. Just shoot me in that situation.
I love Draymond’s look at James before the tip. It was like I am NOT intimidated by you, fucker.
Ut-ter-ley stupid play…
The lost art of the jump ball toss.
ParKer.
Why is Iggy shooting threes at this point…
The way the team has been hitting them, and he’s been hot, up by 10…why not…
It is good to hear this tv crew give credit to the Warriors for their lock-down D in the 4th. They have been so damned biased all night…especially when the game was close.
Fuck you Lebron . . . Slo ass MOFO. Play the game right fucker.
No shit, Blade. I lost a lot of respect for James tonight. He can go fuck himself.
James must have 50 lbs. on Curry . . . No reason for that type of hard contact shit. Someone is going to get hurt.
I see that OBD has made more 3’s than 2’s in this game.
Is that common?
Nope. They shot like 10% better from three tonight than from two.
Anything happening in the Giants game? :-p
It’s tied!!!
Duuuuuuuuuubbbbbbbsssss!!!!!
The game was decided mainly by the Warrior D in the 4th. Cavs went without a point for like six minutes. That and the Warriors unconscious 3 point shooting…
I actually don’t think the Warriors played very well…shows how poorly the Cavs played. This series is over..
What? You fucking kidding me? They played killer D and that won the game. And the Warriors killed them with a record setting number of threes and making all the free throws at the end.
What this game illustrated is that Golden State is just the superior team. The true finals were the Warriors and OKC.
Posey!
Tie it up!
Thought that ball was gone initially…
Buster!
oh good, something happening in the Giants’ game… 🙂
Outside of that HR by DuffMan, and that is the longest poke to LF I have seen at AT&T in a long time! Crushed it…
Now, they can kick their *%&$@ ass at Oracle. Hope they humiliate them. Still steamed about that inbound play where Lebron mugged Curry.
James is a fucking thug. And I liked that neither Green or Curry backed down from him. I am with you…I would love to see the Warriors whoop their asses by 30+.
wow just after Steph closes Cavs down, Posey whacks one and ties up Opie!
Missed Posey’s double watching Steph interview. Flav’s right, Buster never does anything when I am watching.
Got 23 pitches out of Kershaw that inning.
Nice. I heard them mention his stats at the beginning of the game. Something like 116 Ks on the year, and only like six walks! Just unworldly K/BB ratio.
Thumbs up👍 for Posey’s thumb on that swing, that ball was scalded to the base of the fence!
Jesus, I trust Mac this much >< to make a routine catch out there. Dude is a disaster.
Parker is superior as a defensive OFer compared to Mac. I cringe on almost every ball hit Willamson’s way.
We got the complete Cueto show on that Kike K.
I love watching how Cueto fucks with a hitters timing.
Yep…love that crazy-assed wind-up and delivery.
