A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

SF South

Blah game. But you know what is astounding? I guess I already knew this, but the number of Giants fans down here is just a non stop parade. They’re everywhere. I didn’t go to the game but I’ve got to think we took over that stadium again.

Ok, one more day in this paradise and then it’s back to Land of Ugly Women. I know I shouldn’t say that about NorCal but I have never, in my life, seen a hotter collection of women in one place. And they are EVERYWHERE. Wandering around in the street at night dressed like they’re going to the party of the year. And no, these aren’t hookers. This is just how it is down here……

B-day of one of my jazz heroes, Cal Tjader would have been 91 today, born in Midwest but spent long time in bay area before his death in 82.
Vibist and drummer who led seminal band with Mongo Santamaria Willie Bobo Al McKibbon and Vince Guraldi recorded in SF. “Latin Concert” features the great tune “Viva Cepeda” in honor of Giants slugger.
Mentor also to conguero Poncho Sanchez longtime left coast fav latin jazz artist and bandleader.

The Kurkjian book I’m reading “I’m Fascinated by Sacrifice Flies” is pretty light hearted stuff full of player anecdotes. He takes on unwritten rules (and gives both sides) and has a funny chapter on superstitions, usually called “routines” by the players and often pretty bizarre. Excuse is this is how they get to where they want to be mentally, blocking out everything and everyone else to focus and concentrate on task at hand which K maintains with some credibility is hardest sport to play by far.

He makes interesting argument, that many baseball players were great athletes who excelled at other sports in younger days…but chose the hardest one and admit it’s harder than anything they ever did.

File this under ostentatious – Mike Rat Face Shanahan, once an assistant coach at Northern Arizona University, admittedly has come a long way, as this home indicates . . . (slide show can be enlarged)

    http://www.denverpost.com/2016/07/13/mike-shanahans-home-on-sale/

I think that Shanahan can’t afford the HOA fees, much less the mortgage payments after his less than glowing performance at Washington. Sheesh, this guy takes a bath every time he builds or buys a house, e.g., he paid $16 million for another Denver home and sold it for $7 million in 2010. I suspect Shanahan needs a job bad.

“Homes” like that are so stupid. Tons of rooms that go unused. A bowling alley that was probably used a few times then abandoned for lack of interest. The whole thing a ridiculous monument to soulless wealth.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 16, 2016 at 10:28 am

Yeah, I don’t get these people who live in homes that resemble museums. Sheesh, I had 3000 sq. foot homes in Colorado and California, where rooms were not entered for weeks or months. Never again.

By the by, that home was completed in 2008 I think. Maybe Shanahan spent a few months, possibly a year in it, because he was fired by the Broncos and was already in Washington. Oh, one last point – there is no way on God’s green earth that he will see $22 million on that home. If he gets $7-10 million, he’ll be lucky. Seriously.

Anybody remember a particular Cueto start back in April where he got shelled early and Pence said to him: “if you can hold them right there, we will do the rest” … and he did, and they did! I miss Pence!

I’m exited about this second half of the season but I’m also feeling some trepidation. Last night was just one game but it seemed like we were never really in it, even with Bum on the bump. They hardly seemed like a team coming back refreshed and ready to go. Belts golden sombrero, Posey’s continuing mini slump … Span … Ugh!

Maybe it’s just a matter of needing to shake off the holiday fog? The only positives I can think of are that Craw continues to be on a roll and Pena is definitely playing better than expected.

As others here have stated, I too am concerned by the amount of innings accumulated by Bum and Cueto. If those guys are worn down we certainly wont be able to count on a constipated offense to pick them up. With Sam going tonight, and us losing Bum’s start last night, we could easily lose this series, and just as easily be swept. That would be unfortunate because waiting for us just over the horizon are a bunch of tough teams. It would be nice to ‘pad’ our lead, so to speak, while we can.

Yet, the Giants rarely do things the easy way. It wouldn’t shock me all that much if, over the next few weeks, we were to get clobbered by the Pads, Reds, and Phils, and end up blowing away Boston, O’s and the Nats … that seems feasible for this team or, for that matter, any Giants team of the past six years.

No confidence in Alphabet pitching tonight, but I do have him starting in a Fan Duel tourney (mostly because the alternative choices in MLB tonight do not inspire confidence as well). I also have stone face Gillaspie, Pena, and Parker against this kid, Perdomo – he of the 7.48 ERA. We’ll probably make him look like Cy Young.

I’ve also got Wainwright and Cole going in other tourneys, but I may pull Cole because it looks like rain in Washington. Decisions, decisions . . .

That manager tirade on vid last night’s thread was amusing. But, seriously. I don’t miss manager blow ups. Talk about waste of time. I’d much rather have a robot-ump calling strikes strikes, and balls balls, with chicks in hot pants yelling out the calls; rather than Joe West types calling whatever they feel like calling, and having players and managers getting pissed off as they have no idea what to swing at and what not to swing at. They’ve had robo umps call minor league games in Marin, and they’ve gone just fine…

I would not be shocked if they got it wrong. They used an expert, third party doctor for the surgery, so that was good. Rehab management is another story. The fact that the med/training staff let Panik fake them out for quite a while about his concussion symptoms is not good…

Giants were in a rare “zone” the way they were consistently winning on slippery slope before the AS break … It was like some sort of magic spell. Now, the enchantment has been broken … Boch needs to shake things up, especially with the batting order to set things in motion again.

Me? I walk the next batter and hope for a double play.

Wow that was nice comeback by Suarez and Osich.
Flems and Kuiper had interesting convo earlier about rest and days off. imo, you can’t have it both ways. If Giants pitchers are being overworked then they needed the days off.
By same token everyone knows the schedule and they are not 3000 miles away, so when baseball resumes and bell rings you gotta be ready to answer it, no excuses.

Now, that was funny – if you saw the Giants feed – the fan with the sign that said, “Hey Kruk, we’re on assignment.” 🙂

Oh man … Your kidding, right? That is amazing … I wonder if they’ve been following the Flap?

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 16, 2016 at 9:01 pm

Nope. Giants fan actually had that sign.

Old Man River’s second hit tonight plus couple line drive outs. Hope he can get that OB and BA back up where it was earlier.

Seeing that ball girl and thinking about Willie’s related comment, I have a brilliant idea for the next All Star HR Derby . . . Instead of those youngsters in the outfield, let’s have our ball boys from Sunnyside Rest Home out there. They can be supplemented by other rest homes around the league (or wherever they get their ball dudes from).

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 16, 2016 at 9:24 pm

I figure if one of them gets conked in the head or worse . . . Not as big a problem as a youngster getting concussed by one of those shots. In short, they’ve already lived full and productive lives. 🙂

What an utter embarrassment. Pull the trigger on that Andrew Miller trade. Throw in Parker to get it done.

  69. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 16, 2016 at 9:50 pm

Waste of an evening. Entire team battles back and Casilla blows it.

  70. bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on July 16, 2016 at 9:50 pm

I don’t know what is worse … this piece-o-shit cassilia or the fact we are 1-10 risp tonite against this 7.+ era starter for the Pads? Does not bode well when we have to rely on HRs for offense.

  71. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 16, 2016 at 9:50 pm

Time for a Casilla visit to the DL.

  73. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 16, 2016 at 9:52 pm

BTW, Casilla isn’t the only Pen guy on the squad who ignores guys on first, and basically gives away steals. To me, that is not entirely on the pitcher. The catcher, or the bench certainly have the the capability of calling for the pitcher to throw over there if the pitcher has his head up his arse regarding paying attention. Are they scared that Casilla will throw the ball away at first?…

  74. Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on July 16, 2016 at 9:52 pm

Can’t spell Casilla without an L.

Could’ve been a very telling evening, whereas both SF and LA were playing inferior division opponents, tied in extras, and a potential 2-game swing in the standings should one of them win and the other loses. As it turns out…. not very telling afterall. But yeah, a 5-1/2 game lead has never really felt so unstable. 2 weeks left before the trade deadline. This is not the roster at this time that I would feel comfortable with entering the post-season… or, as I think I said before, even entering August… Sabevans, be bold, the time to win it all again is now…
