SF South
Blah game. But you know what is astounding? I guess I already knew this, but the number of Giants fans down here is just a non stop parade. They’re everywhere. I didn’t go to the game but I’ve got to think we took over that stadium again.
Ok, one more day in this paradise and then it’s back to Land of Ugly Women. I know I shouldn’t say that about NorCal but I have never, in my life, seen a hotter collection of women in one place. And they are EVERYWHERE. Wandering around in the street at night dressed like they’re going to the party of the year. And no, these aren’t hookers. This is just how it is down here……
mm, my theory is that there is a wavelength that gets all of them out at once.
Thursday was like that downtown where I work, all ages.
Thank the saints for denim cut off shorts and those that wear them with pride.
B-day of one of my jazz heroes, Cal Tjader would have been 91 today, born in Midwest but spent long time in bay area before his death in 82.
Vibist and drummer who led seminal band with Mongo Santamaria Willie Bobo Al McKibbon and Vince Guraldi recorded in SF. “Latin Concert” features the great tune “Viva Cepeda” in honor of Giants slugger.
Mentor also to conguero Poncho Sanchez longtime left coast fav latin jazz artist and bandleader.
The Kurkjian book I’m reading “I’m Fascinated by Sacrifice Flies” is pretty light hearted stuff full of player anecdotes. He takes on unwritten rules (and gives both sides) and has a funny chapter on superstitions, usually called “routines” by the players and often pretty bizarre. Excuse is this is how they get to where they want to be mentally, blocking out everything and everyone else to focus and concentrate on task at hand which K maintains with some credibility is hardest sport to play by far.
He makes interesting argument, that many baseball players were great athletes who excelled at other sports in younger days…but chose the hardest one and admit it’s harder than anything they ever did.
File this under ostentatious – Mike Rat Face Shanahan, once an assistant coach at Northern Arizona University, admittedly has come a long way, as this home indicates . . . (slide show can be enlarged)
http://www.denverpost.com/2016/07/13/mike-shanahans-home-on-sale/
I think that Shanahan can’t afford the HOA fees, much less the mortgage payments after his less than glowing performance at Washington. Sheesh, this guy takes a bath every time he builds or buys a house, e.g., he paid $16 million for another Denver home and sold it for $7 million in 2010. I suspect Shanahan needs a job bad.
“Homes” like that are so stupid. Tons of rooms that go unused. A bowling alley that was probably used a few times then abandoned for lack of interest. The whole thing a ridiculous monument to soulless wealth.
Yeah, I don’t get these people who live in homes that resemble museums. Sheesh, I had 3000 sq. foot homes in Colorado and California, where rooms were not entered for weeks or months. Never again.
By the by, that home was completed in 2008 I think. Maybe Shanahan spent a few months, possibly a year in it, because he was fired by the Broncos and was already in Washington. Oh, one last point – there is no way on God’s green earth that he will see $22 million on that home. If he gets $7-10 million, he’ll be lucky. Seriously.
Laughing my ass off at Loo’s pic of Span at contracts end on the previous thread. So wrong yet unfortunately so true.
I was hoping someone would…
I did, too.
Gyros were 9-0 against SD. You gotta lose one once in a while.
That Span photo — isn’t that his baseball card?…
Anybody remember a particular Cueto start back in April where he got shelled early and Pence said to him: “if you can hold them right there, we will do the rest” … and he did, and they did! I miss Pence!
I’m exited about this second half of the season but I’m also feeling some trepidation. Last night was just one game but it seemed like we were never really in it, even with Bum on the bump. They hardly seemed like a team coming back refreshed and ready to go. Belts golden sombrero, Posey’s continuing mini slump … Span … Ugh!
Maybe it’s just a matter of needing to shake off the holiday fog? The only positives I can think of are that Craw continues to be on a roll and Pena is definitely playing better than expected.
As others here have stated, I too am concerned by the amount of innings accumulated by Bum and Cueto. If those guys are worn down we certainly wont be able to count on a constipated offense to pick them up. With Sam going tonight, and us losing Bum’s start last night, we could easily lose this series, and just as easily be swept. That would be unfortunate because waiting for us just over the horizon are a bunch of tough teams. It would be nice to ‘pad’ our lead, so to speak, while we can.
Yet, the Giants rarely do things the easy way. It wouldn’t shock me all that much if, over the next few weeks, we were to get clobbered by the Pads, Reds, and Phils, and end up blowing away Boston, O’s and the Nats … that seems feasible for this team or, for that matter, any Giants team of the past six years.
No confidence in Alphabet pitching tonight, but I do have him starting in a Fan Duel tourney (mostly because the alternative choices in MLB tonight do not inspire confidence as well). I also have stone face Gillaspie, Pena, and Parker against this kid, Perdomo – he of the 7.48 ERA. We’ll probably make him look like Cy Young.
I’ve also got Wainwright and Cole going in other tourneys, but I may pull Cole because it looks like rain in Washington. Decisions, decisions . . .
Yeah, Spaminajar is … Well, neither inspiring or appetizing.
That manager tirade on vid last night’s thread was amusing. But, seriously. I don’t miss manager blow ups. Talk about waste of time. I’d much rather have a robot-ump calling strikes strikes, and balls balls, with chicks in hot pants yelling out the calls; rather than Joe West types calling whatever they feel like calling, and having players and managers getting pissed off as they have no idea what to swing at and what not to swing at. They’ve had robo umps call minor league games in Marin, and they’ve gone just fine…
Rare hiccup for Giants management — due to some issue with ESPN losing rights, there is currently no Spanish radio broadcasts of the Giants’ games…
I read Baggs’ game article and a post-game note talked about Pence (the one I might even vote for as a VP) coming back to rehab very soon. I hope they are not allowing Pence to push this faster than is warranted. I would be extra cautious with a hamstring injury this serious, and a guy his age…
Would be shocked if the med team didn’t get that one right. 2nd and 3rd opinions from outside doctors would be totally called for. Should something untoward happen, that whole crew would deserve instant canning ~ and i do not mean in glass jars.
I would not be shocked if they got it wrong. They used an expert, third party doctor for the surgery, so that was good. Rehab management is another story. The fact that the med/training staff let Panik fake them out for quite a while about his concussion symptoms is not good…
Per Baggs:
Panik, Pence, Duffy and Cain have announced that they are leaving for Vietnam tomorrow to seek further medical treatment…
They must be seeing Dr. Huyen Nguyen or Dr. Linh Hoai.
The sponge baths alone would be worth it.
lulzmao
Nate Thurmond passed away…
Saw that, DJ. He was my favorite Warrior. I was heartbroken when he as traded. Classy all the way. RIP, Nate.
Yeah that is sad to have lost Nate the Great. Fierce defender (ask Kareem) and rebounder, developed mid range J for pick and roll with Barry. Once averaged 20 pts and 20 boards for an entire Warrior season.
Only 2 guys I ever saw fake him off his feet were Chet Walker and the great Connie Hawkins.
Span CF
Pagan LF
Belt 1B
Posey C
Crawford SS
Parker RF
Gillaspie 3B
Pena 2B
Samardzija P
Pagan should lead off, Pena should bat second, Span eighth.
Panik targeting Yankee series for return…
Does every home run friendly ballpark have to be called a band box?
Is there no other way to describe it?
Other expressions that never seem to go away:
Playing phone tag
It’s not rocket science
Tough day with the loss of Nate Thurmond! RIP 32 a true Warrior!!
Like Willied mentioned…Kareem said “Nate was the toughest defender in the post then anyone I ever played against”!
Dating myself here but the team with Nate Thurmond,Rick Barry,Jeff Mullins,”Jumpin” Joe Ellis,Clyde Lee, Tom Meschery, Fred Hetzel etc etc etc were pretty exciting teams, just couldn’t get pass the more talented Laker teams back then…
I saw Thurmond hangin’ loose by the player’s entrance at Shea Stadium around 1971. I always wondered why.
Was he a big Giant fan and went on road trips with them or was it just a coincidence?
Now I’ll never know…
What the Fuck Giants…wake up….
This is the most nervous I have ever been with a 5.5 game lead in the division…we’ve got hitters coming back but I just feel we have a slide coming…
Has the guy down 0-2, can’t put him away, and hangs a pitch for an HR.
Bassbaldy’s 11:44 may be prescient about this series. Team seems flat. SamEtc with control problems and ditto Buster’s throw gets the Dagos 2 on ONE hit. RISP remains a frozen zone for the Giants so far tonight. Will somebody let off a firecracker on OUR side?
To date Span seems outta synch with the team.
He’s the main reason the Giants are one of the worst teams at scoring in the first inning.
So “Pagan Baby” ~thanks John Fogarty ~ was the one to light the firecracker. Maybe that wakes the team up. In any event we are now actually in the ballgame vs the Mouse that Roared.
Line-outs by both Brandons. The BBIP gods do not appear to have come around to our side yet. I mean, WTF, didn’t the Pads win last night?
The Giants get two runs, and Smardj has to crap all over it by immediately giving up an HR. This guy really sucks.
Thanks for the acknowledgement Stix. I also agree with Loo’s 5:15 on needed batting order adjustments & GHead’s .. “I just feel we have a slide coming.”
Giants were in a rare “zone” the way they were consistently winning on slippery slope before the AS break … It was like some sort of magic spell. Now, the enchantment has been broken … Boch needs to shake things up, especially with the batting order to set things in motion again.
Not how I expected to come out of the all star break….
I think it was Stix that said a couple few/weeks ago that the Giants were due for a “correction” … I agreed then, and still do. They only thing I would add is that it is probably overdue. I sense there is hell to pay down the road and the way Spaminajar is pitching lately … well … We better pray PV is feeling good.
Any way we could trade this Smardj guy? Yeah, I know, no one would want him at that price. We’re stuck with him. Oh joy!!
Again what the Fuck Giants…watching last night’s game on DVD and tonight, when have Padres fans ever been this animated…roll over and play dead you fuckers…
DVR…DOH!
Are Drunk 1 and Drunk 2 Flav and San Dog???
Pena definitely needs to be moved up in the order, Span down or to the bench.
Uh uh. I’m at home being a good boy. Flav, I can’t vouch for. He may be one of those guys!
Spam in ajar already over 80 pitches by the 4th… Again
..and hey, I never said my van was a piece of crap. I only said it has 196,000 miles on it and a lot of stuff has gone down inside of it and I had to drill a hole in the console because a spiderweb was impeding my speedometer needle! Wilco got it right when he said it was in a semi-decent shape. I WILL say that it contrasted pretty extremely with all the other cars coming out of Valet at Del Mar– which was a scene straight out of The Flamingo Kid.
Great to see Flav at the races. Listening to him break down a horse race is something else. I was doing pre-algebra picking my horses while he was doing AP Calculus.
My recent experience with horses: watching the older snarkkette ride them (English); watch her clean out stalls, clean tack, rub down, clean and shove horses around in the riding barn; stare back at the creatures when they stare at me as I walk down the stalls, laughing at me for paying for their hay and oats; and cut multiple checks to the barn owner for the older snarkkette’s riding lessons…
If you’ve gone 9-0 against a team, that’s tough to keep going. The worm has to turn a little…
Anyone watching Pads feed? Absolutely horrendous bit just now talking about how Mark Grant is too fat to ride in the Navy jets. I can totally see why the Bisox fired Don Orsillo now.
No, cant get it .. I really like the Vasergian & Mud combo back when I was living in SD.
“liked”
I love Mudcat too. Vasgersian is a talented guy, but a bit smug for me and avowed LA guy who hates the Giants.
Didn’t know that about Vasectomy’s allegiances … Yeah, he was pretty smug (perfect description sdog) but those two together we’re something … Always felt they had a lot of fun and truly enjoyed working with each other.
Yeah, they had some real funny bits together for sure. The smugness factor also causes me to not be a huge fan of Costas or Al Michaels. And yes, I know Flemming is a bit smug as well and I worship the ground he walks on, but I would argue that his ego is not nearly as large as those other three guys.
That’s interesting that you like Fleming so much … Me too … I highly respect that he is not afraid to criticize when it is deserved and doesn’t candy coat stuff with the Giants which must be very difficult to do when you are traveling with the team and forming inevitable relationships with players.
Totally agree with you, but I don’t think his fan club around here goes much deeper than you and I!
Yeah, I’ve sensed a bit of animosity toward him here … which, I don’t really get, but its cool … I also, think Flem is in a tricky spot being the ‘newish’ guy and obviously acquiesces to the other three but I always think he does it in a self-respectful manner, without losing face … And the last couple of years I’ve sensed he is tending to stand up for himself more which he also does In a very dignified manner without belittling anyone … That’s a tight rope to walk … I also think he is a very engaged and knowledgeable baseball guy. I probably like him more than the others just because I can imagine the position that he is working from …,and I simply enjoy his voice, delivery, and spirit.
OH shit .. There was a wasted opp
My bad … Thought Belt was third out … yay Posey!
Do NOT trade these guys. He and Parker got to be part of the future.
Scut junior either.
And you can get an Amen from me on that WD!!!
Yes! I mentioned earlier that I had Pena in a stack . . . That just guaranteed money for me in DFS.
Huge congrats Blade … Brilliant selection!
Scoring is complex, but in simple terms, he cost almost the DFS minimum for a 2nd baseman and equally important, his usage % tonight is only 1.3% in the tourney I’m playing in. Also, I didn’t win a lot of money, but now it’s all gravy (potentially more money) based upon other players I have remaining to do their part.
Sounds like “rocket science” 😉 (that’s for Loo)
Damn it! Are we just gonna give it right back to them?
Giants have shot themselves in foot with all these walks. As someone pointed out the leadoff guy is a puffball speed guy that Samrdz walked twice, now they walk Alexi Ramirez to lead off another inning.
Yep, that’s 5 walks as opposed to 0 for the Pedophiles.
Dawg, I caught some of the Pads telecast last night and the play by play guy was really giving it to Mark Grant. Called him fatty or tubs or something like that. When your as bad as the Padres, I have no problem with the broadcast crew trying to liven things up a bit.
I can handle some of that silly stuff, but earlier, I shit you not, he poked Grant in the stomach 10 times on camera with a pointer and was cackling like a stoner in his dorm room the whole time. It was embarrassing. Plus, Orsillo could stand to lose 20 pounds himself. It was too much and I’d be surprised if you didn’t agree if you saw it.
First liked v1.0 of our SP much better than this recent update … Another scary outing: 5innings, over 100 pitches, 2HRs, and a triple …starting to remind me a bit of earlier versions of those other two, Pain & Skeevy.
Never understood Padres color combos, and while this one has 4 different colors in it with the blue hat, it’s not bad for home.
Any idea what the old PCL Padres unis looked like?
Brown based. Maybe some gold trim. I feel strongly that the Padres should have brown-based uniforms. The blue makes them look like Dodger wannabes to me–even if it is a different shade of blue.
zactly. You got the Bums hated division rivals right up the road–why go there?
Jankowski kind of looks like the dragon chick’s brother from Game of Tnrones.
Giants batting 1.000 in these reviews, all of which could have benefited Padres big time.
What a waste.
D-Backs tie it in 9th on Lamb double.
Yep.
Miller’s confused.
off Jansen?
Yeah.
Yes.
Wrong. AZ just tied it.
nice scoop there by the ball gal.
No idea what rest home Giants get theirs out of, but they wouldn’t have picked that one up til it stopped rolling.
No idea how this has a good outcome. Giants muffed having at least a 1 run lead last inning.
Me? I walk the next batter and hope for a double play.
Wow that was nice comeback by Suarez and Osich.
Flems and Kuiper had interesting convo earlier about rest and days off. imo, you can’t have it both ways. If Giants pitchers are being overworked then they needed the days off.
By same token everyone knows the schedule and they are not 3000 miles away, so when baseball resumes and bell rings you gotta be ready to answer it, no excuses.
Great escape.
WoW! What were the odds of Oshit NOT taking a dump there?
Now, that was funny – if you saw the Giants feed – the fan with the sign that said, “Hey Kruk, we’re on assignment.” 🙂
Oh man … Your kidding, right? That is amazing … I wonder if they’ve been following the Flap?
Nope. Giants fan actually had that sign.
That’s awesome!
This guy Pena ain’t fuckin’ around … that seemed like a very nice at bat.
Borracho!
Old Man River’s second hit tonight plus couple line drive outs. Hope he can get that OB and BA back up where it was earlier.
Seeing that ball girl and thinking about Willie’s related comment, I have a brilliant idea for the next All Star HR Derby . . . Instead of those youngsters in the outfield, let’s have our ball boys from Sunnyside Rest Home out there. They can be supplemented by other rest homes around the league (or wherever they get their ball dudes from).
I figure if one of them gets conked in the head or worse . . . Not as big a problem as a youngster getting concussed by one of those shots. In short, they’ve already lived full and productive lives. 🙂
Brutal…unless you have your money in stretchers.
now that is the quintessential flap comment. let’s mock them old timers and see if they kill themselves while entertaining us!
Yeah Buster!
Awesome! This guy Quack sucks , 6th HR given up out of pen. Get some insurance!
Ca-see-ya later, alligator … Dismal abysmal mutherfucker!
Casilla is nothing but a piece of shit!!! He has had plenty of rest and he throws crap pitches!! Fuck you Casilla
What the fuck? Wow! Unbelievable.
If Bochy does not bench him….
I hope Casilla has lost th closer roll!!! Get him out of there! I am so tired of his shit!!
What an utter embarrassment. Pull the trigger on that Andrew Miller trade. Throw in Parker to get it done.
Waste of an evening. Entire team battles back and Casilla blows it.
I don’t know what is worse … this piece-o-shit cassilia or the fact we are 1-10 risp tonite against this 7.+ era starter for the Pads? Does not bode well when we have to rely on HRs for offense.
Time for a Casilla visit to the DL.
This mental meltdown crap has to stop…
Saving grace? Dodgers just lost. HAHAHAHAHA!
BTW, Casilla isn’t the only Pen guy on the squad who ignores guys on first, and basically gives away steals. To me, that is not entirely on the pitcher. The catcher, or the bench certainly have the the capability of calling for the pitcher to throw over there if the pitcher has his head up his arse regarding paying attention. Are they scared that Casilla will throw the ball away at first?…
Can’t spell Casilla without an L.
Or 2…. 🙂
Could’ve been a very telling evening, whereas both SF and LA were playing inferior division opponents, tied in extras, and a potential 2-game swing in the standings should one of them win and the other loses. As it turns out…. not very telling afterall. But yeah, a 5-1/2 game lead has never really felt so unstable. 2 weeks left before the trade deadline. This is not the roster at this time that I would feel comfortable with entering the post-season… or, as I think I said before, even entering August… Sabevans, be bold, the time to win it all again is now…
