A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Frustration

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 28, 2016

I want the Giants to pick up a deadline guy as much as the next Flapper but when I read tweets like this:

Sources: trying hard to get Cashner. Not necessarily front-runner; , still in, possibly others.

…..I start to think it’s not going to happen.

Sabes and his sidekick don’t like to compete. Partially because they don’t have the bullets to fire, but mostly because they just don’t like to compete. They irrationally hold on to their minor league currency like it’s worth more than it is. Here’s a tip: devalue it. It will make it easier for you to let go of it when it’s time to pay the piper.

I’d take Cashner in a heartbeat. He’s basically Smarge who I greatly prefer to either Cain or Peavy. He throws hard, sometimes too hard, but he’s better than our current 5 and 5. So why not?

Well, see the Rosenthal tweet to find out “why not?”

How is it the Giants don’t have minor league talent anybody else values? We get jazzed listing the SF infield that’s all home grown. True dat. But, down below, apparently other teams chuckle at the Giants minor leagues when it comes to trades. I get that the Cubs were crap for a long time, so they had high draft picks constantly and can trade a handful for Chapman. But, after the first two rounds in baseball, what good does a higher position do? It’s not like football. In baseball, the draft is pretty much a crapshoot after the first couple of rounds. Meaning, the Giants aren’t drafting that great, especially when it comes to OFers. And, as far as pitchers go, I’m still waiting for the first home grown good starter since Bum. He’s been around a while, since 2010. Heston came out of nowhere, now he’s back to that same spot, apparently. The other guys are phantoms until they actually show up at ATT. The Pen home-growners are looking pretty average, given results so far. Anyway, after this Nats series, the roster is going to have some major revisions with guys coming back. That hot roadie to Philly, Nats and Miami looks like a sweaty challenge…

I understand the frustration snarkk, but I think you’re being a bit too harsh . . . Three World Series, more home grown players than any other MLB team, and fairly consistent contention year in and year out, tells me that the Giants brain trust is doing well in developing minor league talent. Remember, this isn’t the NFL, where you’re fairly certain that a 1st round pick is going to produce immediately or in the first few years in the league.

I have a hard time criticizing our scouts, Sabean, and Evans. In short, I have zero problems with the Giants front office.

Actually, I’m 100% confident in the Giants brain trust getting something accomplished. As in all cases involving 2 or more people or 2 or more sides – there are a myriad of outcomes. Consequently, I still trust Sabes and Evans will get it done, but it’s possible that the “other side” will be asking for too much or they get better offers. That’s how trades and deals work.

Also, how many times has Sabes picked another team’s pocket?

Off the top of my head, the Phillies (Pence), Pirates (Glass Sanchez, Javier Lopez), Red Sox (Jake Peavy, Ramon Ramirez), Rockies (Scutaro), and Marlins (Cody Ross off the waiver line). Even the ones that didn’t work out, looked good at the time, e.g., Beltran (2011) and Leake (2015).

I can’t think of anyone else – Sabean and Evans – I would want making deals at this time of the year.

  3. wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on July 28, 2016 at 8:12 am

Agree, there will be no excuses for them not to get a Cashner type. I would suspect he would cost something similar to Leake. A Wiilamson or Parker or a ML arm such as Beede or Bickford and probably a midlevel prospect. Hell you may get him for an arm not named Beede or Bickford. Possibly Mejia? Those are the type of moves you make all day long and you don’t sweat the guys given up.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 28, 2016 at 8:16 am

None of these guys in the minors are ML arms until they get to the MLs and succeed. Until then, it’s all conjecture and potential. So, I see no problem trading anybody in the minors at any time for proven talent. I don’t want them trading Williamson, I’d keep him. They will need two starting pitchers next year, Peavy is gone and Cain will likely be useless, so they have to figure on bringing up at least one from the minors…

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 28, 2016 at 3:00 pm

Uh, there is this thing called free agency. It does not all rest on the boys in the minors.

  4. wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on July 28, 2016 at 8:17 am

Sabean also likes to wait until the last hour when teams are forced to take less in order to move inventory. The problem with doing so is that another team can raise their hand at said last minute with prospects slightly more desirable than what we can offer. We then can’t call their raise and thus are forced to fold.

I’m with Blade, Flav. Gotta trust the brass based on their track record. (Pagan also on that list).
These tweeters only know what they hear and there’s always shit going on that they don’t know about…

    • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on July 28, 2016 at 8:33 am

Sorry, Pagan belongs on a pickpocket list, but not the trade deadline one…

  6. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 28, 2016 at 8:24 am

Lots of teams bring starting pitchers up from AAA for a look see, or emergency. The Giants don’t do that. They say they don’t want to destroy a kid’s psyche or some kind of lame excuse like that, but it doesn’t seem to bother other teams. I think Sabes doesn’t like to do that because he doesn’t want to show his hand of the real talent of these pitchers, so their trade value isn’t hit, if they get hit. He’ll only bring up the no brainer stars like Cain, Timmy and Bum. There aren’t any no brainer star starters in the system now, are there — I guess not, or they’d be up already…

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 28, 2016 at 3:02 pm

So fucking what (Giants not bringing up pitchers from AAA). They have won three world series over the last six years. They obviously are doing more right than any other team. And the few times the Giants have brought up AAA kids, they have bombed. This is a non-starter for me.

  7. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 28, 2016 at 8:30 am

I’ll guess Sabevans will pick up one Pen arm, no bats. They’ll figure the guys back from the DL will be like acquisitions. I’ll be surprised if they pick up a starter. I think they want the Cain thing to play out, and if he craters, they’ll deal with it after the trade deadline…

  8. wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on July 28, 2016 at 8:34 am

I think there is precedent to blame the Giants front office for how little they did during the end of the Bonds era. However I don’t know if it was Dick Tidrow or someone else who came on board and really turned the ship around. Drafting the likes of Cain,Timmy, Posey, Crawford, Belt, Bum, Panic, etc..really proved that their scouting had sudddently turned things around.

However winning three WS titles every other year is going to set you back into the latter parts of the draft. The talent level after the first 10 or so picks really falls off. One area where the Giants haven’t proven as capable is the international draft pool.

In a perfect world they would tank every odd year to ensure Top 10 picks as well as be able to sell in those down years to replinish your talent pool. The Red Sox are a good example of this. Unfortunatley even in odd years, we still manage to contend.

Blade has brought up a good point, that Sabean HAS pulled off some very good deals. But that was in the past. I think when teams say the Giants farm system isn’t a *good fit* to trade with, part of that is being tired of Sabean pawning off his B-level prospects on them. Now, that’s on the other GM of course. But it’s like they’ve wisened up. And Sabes still won’t trade any of the guys who are coveted. He traded ONE blue chip prospect in his life (Wheeler). I think he’s made a pact with himself never to do that again and I think that’s a huge mistake.

Speaking of the Red Sox. I just read the Giants broke Clevelands record of most consecutive sell outs and now only trail Boston whose streak extends back to 2003. If the Giants can follow that receipe, we are in pretty good shape for many years to come. The Red Sox and Giants are definetly the “jones’s” of MLB.

I also trust the front office. Over the past few weeks, I was thinking there were 4 areas of possible focus: 1 top notch reliever (for obvious reasons), 1 3rd baseman with pop (who knows about Duffy, and the cast of characters being run out there ain’t real strong), 1 starting pitcher, and 1 outfielder with pop. Obviously, all 4 things aren’t happening, and Pence will return hopefully very soon, so scratch #4, leaving a reliever, starter, and a maybe a 3rd bagger or a versatile player like Pearce. Most likely 3 things won’t happen either, but that would be *bold* if they did. If only 2, do you focus only on the arms? Even with Pence coming back, still kinda feeling like they need another bat. If only 1 thing happens, will that be enough? I do trust Sabevans. That said, if not much happens, it will seem disappointing. They just need to get to the post-season. “Not much” happening in the next few days probably won’t do it. Every morning now I’m waking up and tuning in for some good news. Maybe… tomorrow….

I’ve long held that the Flap, more so than the other two Giants FANatics sites because it tends to be more selective and less verbiage to wade through, makes for the perfect unpaid focus group for the tightwad organization. Corporations pay mucho dinero entertaining the opinions and takes of paid focus groups. It would fit the Giants M.O. perfectly to go for the freebie ~ keeping mum about that all the while, of course.

The “pain in the ass” factor, rising ticket prices and my rising age have cut down my attendance at NY Ranger games to about 5 a season and usually one per playoff round. Thx Unc, those were awesome. Loved the Kinks, Animals, Yardbirds early editions. Stones in those days were quite bluesy too; their version of “Let the Good Times Roll” from Out of Our Heads is great.

I noticed the other night when Amy was bragging about the sellouts that were rows of empty seats right behind her. Still, the Yard is a license to print money and Giants I don’t think are going downhill either.

I’m sure every team would like a blockbuster deal with reinforcements to take place of dead weight. I do think Sabes hands are tied in this sense—he’s stuck with Pagan (mind blowing fups lately on bases and OF) under performing Span (at least so far) injuries to some regulars he might have overvalued and some other old guys on the pitching staff. He’s not going to DFA Blanco or an SP nor Casilla Romo Lopez.

I think team gets a lot younger next year so I’d rather he didn’t dump the young guys unless he gets a regular he can rely on for a few years, either in rotation or the field.

This series hurt but Reds have actually won their last 4, so they’re playing well. Bruce was great, but if he really hit 4 HRs every week he’d have Bonds record. I’m still not in on this guy or any other Kingman type.

Giants said by MLBTR to be sniffing around Twins Edwardo Nunez. If the price is not too steep he could be a prime pickup because of both his bat and versatility. He can play 2B, 3B, SS and LF. This team has had a history of going for versatile types. Perhaps Adrianza or one of the current fill-ins goes along with say a Kyle Crick (been improving lately and many teams are suckers for 1st rounder types) and perhaps one of the 4 or 5 good starter prospects at Augusta.

Yeah, but did any of youse guys have any Pearls Before Swine or Incredible String Band albums, or see them? (I saw ISB the weekend of Woodstock. They flew down to Queens, across from Shea, to join Tom Paxton, Odetta, Tim Hardin at a folkfest.) Does that give me ANY cred? How about talkin’ to Phil Ochs?

I remember the ISB, there was a cut you could hear on FM radio here. The whole folk thing, early Dylan Richie Havens was another movement of all the great music happening in ’60s beside Brit invasion. Unbeatable for a decade imo—Hendrix, Doors, Otis Redding/Aretha soul explosion, Motown, blues revival of Butterfield that led to resurgence of black founders of the genre…Coltrane Monk and tons of other jazz guys I didn’t know about then.

The “pain in the ass” factor, rising ticket prices and my rising age have cut down my attendance at NY Ranger games to about 5 a season and usually one per playoff round. As the amazing “Map-Dawg” can tell you, it’s a much easier subway trip from South Brooklyn than Citifield or Yankee Stadium which I only go to when the Giants are in town…

I’m continually amazed at friends/co-workers, mostly Mets fans, who make numerous trips from Jersey into NYC for ballgames throughout the season, although I did make it into NYC two straight days last week. Anything for you, Loo.

Don’t think it wasn’t appreciated by Chi and I. Same deal with GH and SD, along with their kids. I was literally exhausted when I got back, as I hadn’t packed this much touristy shit into 5 days since I don’t know when. Much more use to booking a trip solo for 2-5 months and going at a snails pace (in some instances, just chilling for the day with a massage, dry heat sauna or steam room). That being said, all of you guys made this trip absolutely unique and a ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE. I mean that from the bottom of my heart. 🙂

MLB has a brief article by Jim Duquette on 5 viable trade scenarios. Basically, as with most of these guys, throwing shit against the wall to see if anything sticks. Interesting that 2 of the 5 involve the Dodgers (getting Volquez and Reddick). Interesting only because the Dogs certainly do get talked about in the media a lot more than our Giants. I rarely have seen stories like this talking about SF. I think it’s because Sabean has been crafty and a tad unpredictable, so the writers don’t even bother trying to figure it out. Kinda like us Flappers, except we do bother trying to figure it out…. By the way, a blockbuster trade would be cool, but anything like that Matt Williams trade is unlikely; Sabes pulled that one off as the new guy, he didn’t know the Giants players, no investment in them personally, a lot easier for him to pull the trigger on something like that 10 years ago than it is now. Still would like to see something bold….

As i noted earlier today while citing MLBTR on the Giants interest in Nunez, his versatility plus his stick are both of interest to the team. For the nonce he takes Duffy’s place. But as a shortstop he can give Crawford the occasional break, particularly when we have a flyball starter on the mound. He can also fill in for Panik and even do an occasional gig in LF.

The move indicates that Green, possibly Gillaspie and likely Adrianza could become part of a package to get a solid reliever or maybe even a starter. My guess is that Tomlinson, also a versatile athlete, may well be retained.

Nunez did not arrive on the cheap. Twins have done well in acquiring pitchers in trades with SF. My co first choice for a bump to the rotation was Mejia, a lefty starter with an excellent track record and considerably young at 23. So he could be another Liriano/Nathan for Minnesota. This now means Ty Blach, currently leading the PCL in wins with 11 and an ERA in the 3.60’s, becomes the #1 interim callup. He is not regarded as a top of the rotation hurler, but may do ok in the 4 or 5 role.

All in all a rather even trade with no discernible edge at this point. One more element in Mejia’s game is that he is a strong stolen base threat and should be given serious consideration to bat leadoff.

But it was maybe a little worn from your days but some of the rides, the two merry go rounds and the wooden roller coaster all seemed like the original rides. My mother in law and bunch of the relatives grew up going there as well as mother once was from Rye.

The post funeral activities were at the American Yacht Club, familiar with it Pawlie? Was close to Playland.

The low light of the day was not the funeral but after lunch at the Yacht Club and I turn to my wife to ask where the bag with all my clothes to change into for the beach/pool from my entire black funeral garb and she responds with “What bag???” The one I asked you to carry from the hotel as I brought all the kids stuff to the car…that bag!!!!!

here’s the thing I don’t think Bochy takes into enough consideration: Span could probably appreciate a drop in the LU. Take some pressure off being a lead off guy and just let him be a hitter. It makes no sense that Span is in the lead off spot every single game. He’s not even close to our best lead off option. Where is JAMES to back this up!!>!!!?!?!?! lol

Scroll back up Pawlie to my commentary on the trade. Nunez is fast and a serious base-stealing threat. So my hope is that Bochy sees it that way. Flav, you are absolutely correct about at the least dropping Span down to 8th or so. He hasn’t meshed as a Giant yet. Perhaps that leadoff load is too heavy or maybe the analysts fucked up when they took him on. Ideally, a leadoff batter should draw a lot of walks and enjoy an OBP well over the .333 that Span can’t quite seem to achieve.

If Nunez is not suitable for that job, maybe Belt should be considered. Of course he is not your stereotypical leadoff guy, but he gets on base more than anybody else on the team and is relatively indifferent as an RBI threat. Dude has been seriously miscast as a #6 and a fair fit at #3.

Jim Bowden said this about the trade . . . “Giants do what they usually do at trade deadlines make precision under the radar moves that end up being significant acquiring Eduardo Nunez from Twins (remember Marco Scutaro and Javier Looez trades in past deadlines?) He fills in at 3B at least until Duffy comes back and then gives them versatile player who can also play 2B & OF. He leads AL with 26 SB with 12 HR .300 AVG. Twins get LHP Adalberto Mejia in return who profiles just as 6th or 7th inning reliever or 5th starter.”

Didn’t Rob Petrie run for political office in one episode…..or perhaps it was a season-long storyline? Or is this my psychotic fugue?

I can’t watch any of that convention stuff, but I do wish I’d seen a bit of Chelsea after seeing Flav’s “37 qualudes” comment.

Never heard of Nunez, but sounds like a nice pickup.
