A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Losing and More Losing

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 30, 2016

Giants going against someone named Reynaldo Lopez. He’s got an ERA in the 11’s. I’m sure that’s nothing a triple play or two couldn’t fix.

I’m guessing Nunie gets let loose today at the top of the LU. The o/u on number of times his helmet flies off while running the bases has been set at 1.5. Let the betting begin….

Pence back today. He and Nunie will at least give this shit LU a different look.

We need a shake up. Flip the spread. Whatever. Upside down time.

Hopefully, Jake will keep them under 6 runs in 5 innings (last line against the Reds) One can hope I guess.

Last 7 starts for Smarg – 4,5,4,2.4.6.6 runs allowed. Ugh.

I was at a bar tonight here in Saigon that had baseball on, Fox Sports Asia. St. Louis in Miami. Not live, obviously (actually, sometimes it’s cool to find baseball on Fox Sports Asia here because it’s tape delay and they’ve taken out all of the ‘non action’ so the game flies by.) I was amazed. I mean…. the batters were actually getting hits. With runners in scoring position. And there was this pitcher for the Cards named Leake, and he looked good. I thought, damn, why can’t we get pitchers like that…… I joke. Sort of. I agree, Craig, need to shake things up, man. They’re working on pissing away a season that can be theirs for the taking. I’m no doomer. But this team is f-ing dead ass right now and needs to come out of it. August and September, it’s crunch time. Glorious baseball time. Sheesh, at least make it interesting already….. Pence back. That will help. If this stretch has been just a *correction*, fine. Stop it at that.

Have the Baseball Gods finished having their fun with us yet? I mean, what the hell can they do at this point? They have used the injury bug to a heavy degree and starting out, the replacements played well and SF continued to win. Somehow, Buster, Belt and Crawford go south pretty much all at once. No core. Bum gets cained, Cueto has a bad inning and Sam-etc is still in the slogging mode.

Can they top last night’s triple play with the bases jammed and nobody out? Cleanup hitter lines out and the pins fall. Hit it on the nose and where does it go. BIBP odds for this team have gone through the roof and are soaring somewhere in outer space. For a finale, the new acquisition Nunez can’t quite get the job done with runners in scoring position in the bottom of the 9th.

I mean, what the hell can the BBG’s come up with next? Even Loki, the Norse Trickster God has been consulted. That Triple Play was probably his scheme. Isn’t it about time this thing flips?

I’ve got no confidence for the Giants in this game today. They’re up against some kid who has pitched once before in MLB. Against the Doghairs, and they K’d 9 times against him… while crushing his ass with 6 runs in 4+ innings. Just the kind of kid the Giants do jack shit against. He’s not a junk baller, so there is a thimble of hope. Then, there’s Peavy. I implore Boch to employ the 5 inning rule. That is, if Peavy even gets there without giving up a couple of 2 or 3 run bombs. After a 2-9 post AS game start, this ain’t dooming. It’s reality. I do think it has to get better now, the triple play last night had to be the nadir. Hopefully Pence does something to energize this comatose, dauber-on-the-floor squad. I guess I’ll have to start chewing on my SF cap, because I thought there was no way he’d be back this quickly off of hammy surgery. Fingers crossed on that’s not rushed. Giants need more moves to shake this shit up. LA will make a big move of some sort. Book that…

I agree the Dodgers are sensing blood in the water and they will make a big move or two. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they make a run at Sale, though I think he goes to Texas.

  7. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 30, 2016 at 11:33 am

Giants total failure to grow real MLB quality outfielders in their system is biting them now. Pence back certainly should help. But, when he’s out, the Giants OF is one of the worst in baseball. Normally, an outfield is the source of at lease SOME power bats, and good plate production, in any case. Span has turned into pretty much a nothing offensively, and questionable base running. Not a threat to steal. His defense is OK, but a rag arm. If this is all he provides, CF looks like a mess offensively over his contract term. Hopefully willieD’s take last night is right, and Pagan and Blanco are gone next year, and the team gets younger. Parker has to prove he’s not a strike out artist, and Williamson shows promise and is growing in his good ABs, but still, both look like a crapshoot. It looks like this OF gets appreciably better the next few seasons only by trades. But, since the Giants need starters next year, they can’t empty the minor league stable totally of all their starter prospects as trade bait. Thankfully, with all the sellouts, the Giants will have money to burn to at least try to secure OF talent…

    • Carstie Clausen's avatar Carstie Clausen said, on July 30, 2016 at 12:11 pm

Snarkk: On the RH side you will find a line: “SF Minor League Stats”. Check the OFers from Richmond clear on down through Salem-Keizer. From my read, the pipeline does not appear empty, but one to three years away depending on the individual.

I was kinda hoping they’d pick up a decent starting pitcher and just plug him in to the 3rd or 4th spot and down-size both Cain and Peavy to splitting the 5th spot, Cain pitches the 1st 4 innings, Jake the next 4 or 5. If they can do that, it’s a decently pitched game and saves the pen.

    • Carstie Clausen's avatar Carstie Clausen said, on July 30, 2016 at 12:12 pm

Shared starter load for the #5. Not a bad idea. Could be workable with that pair. Cain would get the start as he’s been with the team through the entire run of rings.

  34. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 30, 2016 at 2:10 pm

Well, hopefully that’s the only 2 run dinger Peavy gives up in 5, certainly not unexpected. Meanwhile, Giants going the usual oh for the game in RISP so far. Why doesn’t Bochy try something different with 2 runners on and no outs instead of sitting on his ass waiting for Godot to get a double or triple? Hit and run, run and hit, bunt for a hit and make the defense make a play (or a mistake), something, anything different. Yeah, you risk making outs, but WTF? We’ve waited for Godot for the entire post-AS break…

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 30, 2016 at 2:55 pm

Watching the replay today, Span taking a tumble at first also may have affected his cognizance of what was going on. FP on the Mats broadcast made a concussion reference with span that I was unaware of. Must have been from last season…if he thought that was a one-hopper, the last thing he wanted to do was get thrown out at home so he darted home. I dont fault him. Nunez is making plays. We haven’t had much playmaking in the last 2 weeks.

Nunez reminds me also a bit of that other utility infielder we had that used to be on the Rangers. The guy who made the play on the last play of Cain’s perfect game. What was his name? Pawlie liked him. Nunez looks to swing the bat a little better than that guy did though.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 30, 2016 at 3:02 pm

Pawlie had the great line: “It’s the dawning of the Age of J. Arias.”

Nunez has a much better bat than Arias. Arias sucked at the plate. It is amazing he stuck with the Gigantes as long as he did.

I see behind home plate the notifications about Perry’s statue being unveiled on the 13th. My daughter and I will be there on the 14th…looking forward to checking it out. I still say Kent should have gotten one before Gaylord, HOF, or not.

    • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on July 30, 2016 at 3:33 pm

Totally totally agree. Kent may be the most underrated player last quarter century…

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 30, 2016 at 3:08 pm

I think it is a bit of both. But in the field and on the base paths, they are just not playing good fundamental ball. That shit has got to change.

  62. wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on July 30, 2016 at 3:13 pm

I think on Monday morning we will see the Giants get a reliever or two. Those little deals go down every five minutes on the last day. My pick: Seattle closer Steve Cishek if the Mariners decide to sell.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 30, 2016 at 3:39 pm

Joe, I love Cishek, but we have little or no chance to get him. I can’t even imagine them entertaining the thought of trading him.

      • wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on July 30, 2016 at 3:44 pm

If the Astros and Rangers could put a little bit of a cushion on their lead they would be in full sell mode. I don’t think they have a chance to make the postseason. Root for them to lose today and tomorrow. Lol!

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 30, 2016 at 3:46 pm

By the by, do you have any Anthony DeSclafani in your tourneys today? Just a hunch, but I think he is an excellent value play (especially since he is pitching in SD and shut them down for 51 FD points over a month ago). Again, only an inexpensive hunch.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 30, 2016 at 4:03 pm

Joe, did you see my Anthony DeSclafani post?

      • wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on July 30, 2016 at 4:17 pm

I actually do have him in my tourney that’s just starting.

      • wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on July 30, 2016 at 4:21 pm

I am doing really well in an early slate tourney but I have Smly and he just gave up a two run bomb and is at 70 fucking pitches thru 4. I had Happ and a Blue Jay stack, so I just need this fucker to get me about 20pts to guarantee a three figure payday.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 30, 2016 at 4:25 pm

Good luck Joe . . . Hope you get it.

      • wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on July 30, 2016 at 4:33 pm

It’s not going to happen. I will be lucky to win $20 now. I just can’t get two starters to dominate to save my life.

I was just bantereing with some buddies back home and one mentioned the idea of trading Belt. I’m not sure what the market would be for Belt (since everyone is throwing the shift at him and he has not responded well, I’m not sure he brings back major players in return). But I then threw out the comment that if there was anyone to trade that would be momentous it would be Posey and that probably the only person I deal Posey for would be a package to get Trout. Anyone here would make that deal? Not sure that would even be of interest to the Angels.

If we traded Posey, who in baseball would be worth bringing back in such a blockbuster. We would need at least one major slugger and a #2 level starter I would think. Josh Donaldson one potential slugger?

    • wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on July 30, 2016 at 3:49 pm

I will say it until I am blue in the face. Belt would be a perfect fit in Houston. In a lineup full of fence swingers, they desperately need someone who can get on base and isn’t afraid to take a walk. First base has been a black hole for them since Berkman left. He is exactly what the Astros need and they should overpay to get him. They certianly have the prospects to make it happen.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 30, 2016 at 3:52 pm

      Ain’t happening. Dream on…

      • wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on July 30, 2016 at 3:55 pm

Chi it would never happen now (the Giants need proven pitching not blue chip prospects) but in the offseason it would make perfect sense.

      • wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on July 30, 2016 at 3:57 pm

And by the way, you’re only saying that because of Belt’s timely hit. 😉 You haven’t exactly been his biggest fan.

    • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on July 30, 2016 at 3:50 pm

They are looking more like the Giants we knew earlier this year…smardjaramjam is turning into a bit of a disappointment after a solid start. They need to work him in the off-season on a new pitch or something with pitching strategy.

Otherwise maybe pursuing another starter in the off-season you can slot as a #3 starter (a lefty would be bitchin) and moving smardjaramjam into the 4th slot an idea…

      • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on July 30, 2016 at 3:51 pm

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 30, 2016 at 3:53 pm

From what I can tell Shark’s biggest problem of late has been his location (same with Cain). You leave a pitch up in the zone as frequently as those two, you are going to pay.

Gun that fucker DOWN! GHead, now tell me why the fuck would we want to trade Posey? (Trout and a number two starter might get me thinking about it). Not sure how the money matches up…too fucking lazy to go see what Trout is making.

    • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on July 30, 2016 at 4:26 pm

Since I cant see the damn play:(

But I’m also not advocating a trade but speculating on what could we get for him. Would you not take Trout for Posey and others??? Trout is going to be a bigger offensive producer over the next 10 years than Posey. Both should be hall of famers but going into next season, what will be the biggest need for our team for the future???
