Lastly.. Only the Giants lame medical staff would say Span is ok to bunt, but since he has a strained quad maybe he can but but not run????Idiots. He has been lousy so not like losing a great player..but really??? He can’t play because of a muscle strain but lets let him do a bunt and see if he can hurt himself sprinting to 1st if the bunt is bad. I’m sure that never happens!!

I read this last night and it resonated. Great point…..

I’m wondering what the great and all powerful and all-knowing Nunie has in store for us today. What bounty of gifts will he bestow? Finally we have someone exciting at the top of our lame line up……

Come on Evans step up and bring in Jay Bruce…interesting that SI has a story on the idea if trading Trout. One exec speculated it would take three elite prospects and two big-league caliber pitchers…Giants are out…

Forgot who, but someone asked about why did the Padres trade Kemp? Here is the best column about the why and who benefits. Basically it is a salary dump and Olivera will be cut soon after he becomes a Padre. Great column!

It still is kinda odd Pads couldn’t get more for Kemp from someone, don’t you think?. Wonder if that story SD related about his poor OF play and general I got mine ($$$$) tude had more to do with it.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 31, 2016 at 9:08 am

Apparently not, or someone else would have bit with a better offer. As the columnist points out, “Kemp has been barely above replacement level at 0.2 WAR, thanks to bad defense and a poor .285 OBP,” so I think they were fortunate to get this deal. Now the Padres have flexibility to move forward on plans for next season. In short, I think Kemp was like an anchor around their neck.

Willie, the guy that I like is Will Myers. He has actually been a worthwhile pick up for the Padres (please chime in SanDog with your opinion) and I think he’s finally blossomed to the point where he can be the centerpiece of their team going forward.

I was listening on radio, and miller said Bum was in the on deck circle beforehand. He was called back so Span could lay down a sac bunt, which he screwed up with a poor bunt in front of plate and got the runner thrown out at 2b and almost got doubled up.
Then immediately they pinch ran for him.

The plan by Bochy was not a bad one at all (and Bum is up to there to swing away); his player didn’t execute it and then he got him off the field fast as he could. Dang, tough crowd–lot of complaints Bochy never bunts, he finally does and he still gets shit.

Pls tell me who plays CF (after watching Pagan in LF, he’s out of ?)–everyone hates Span and Blanco it appears. Blanco had 2 hits walk and the only rbi the other night, plus another hit and walk yesterday. 5 times OB in 2 games plus a rbi. He had an excellent year last year at the plate with .780 OPS—maybe he can pick up and finish season stronger. Like it or not this is who Giants are 2016 anyway.

    • Carstie Clausen's avatar Carstie Clausen said, on July 31, 2016 at 8:59 am

We’ve all read it and all have said it: El Tiburon Blanco can be an excellent player if he does not start on a daily basis. Three or maybe 4 times per week would be ideal. He needs to be in the low-pressure zone somewhere towards the bottom of the lineup. He seems to thrive when taken for granted and overlooked by the opposing battery.

    • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on July 31, 2016 at 9:30 am

I’m not as down on Span as most are but he is a speed guy who seems to break down a lot.
I had the Nats feed here and their guys said Span had problems with the sac bunt, so the Nats used to tell him to bunt for a hit in those situations (fuck me, I’m repeating FP Santangelo. please, shoot me now). So in theory I understand what Boch was going for but if Bum was just going to swing away, maybe Cain or another pitcher could have gotten the bunt down better than Span.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 31, 2016 at 9:31 am

I actually like Span. I like Pagan and Blanco too, but understand and even encourage the Giants to go in a new direction next season. Span gets a lot of grief, but I think other than his sub par batting average, he’s essentially performed as advertised when compared to his career numbers.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 31, 2016 at 2:46 pm

Disagree. I think his OBP needs to go a bit north.

  5. Carstie Clausen's avatar Carstie Clausen said, on July 31, 2016 at 8:55 am

Could be we turned the corner yesterday. Sure there were alarums and excursions, warts even. The take, though, was the dissipation of the hapless, helpless inertia that has been plaguing the team since the Break. Once Bochy gets his lineup figured out and established, a reinvigorated offense with the addition and returns of Nunez, Panik and Pence, should no longer resemble wilted lettuce and wet noodles. We’re getting our oomph back.

Still questions on the rotation, but i sure did dig me some performance by the Bullies. So much hangs on Cain’s performance today. At least he is not facing the formidable long-fly lineups featured by Boston and the Reds and he is pitching at home. A “quality” start of giving up no more than 3 in six would probably do the trick with that reinvigorated lineup and a pen which appears to have returned to focus and to the clearly defined roles and situations which develop that focus.

Winning today would prepare the team for what could be the most grueling road trip of the season.

Watched the Tribe blast a few bombs off the A’s kid SP last night as they won handily. Now they get A Miller from Yanks for 4 prospects. They are gonna be tough.

One guy on a site commenting about Miller deal used the words “new Champ City” to describe Cleveland, adding…”at least until football.”

    • Carstie Clausen's avatar Carstie Clausen said, on July 31, 2016 at 9:21 am

Injuns did lose out on Lucroy as the dude invoked his “no trade to Cleveland” clause. Guess that other lakeside makes him claustrophobic. Perhaps Indians have a prospect coveted by some team out there looking to reboot and the Giants could offer Susac for that prospect/s and quickly package and flip him for a capable #2 setup man ~ or in a bigger package for a reliable #3.5 starter.

Nice post end of last thread 10 PM our time from Loo on value of Blanco.

I’m sure Giants want reg ABs for Parker, only for another month til Sept call ups. Probably same thing for Specs.

Noticed Craw went into play SS late, second time Bochy has done this lately when Craw was out of the LU.
But what was interesting to me was Nunez took over 2b for Panik and made the turn on the DP they got for Romo. Now that is a definite hmmnn.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 31, 2016 at 2:47 pm

I don’t think so, Willie. I think the line of thought there is that Panik just came back from a long lay-off, and they will do things like this to slow play him. Just my opinion…could be wrong.

Epic meltdown for Chapman yesterday. Came in game 8th 2 outs 2 on with 1 run lead and gives up double that clears bases and pins L on Arrieta. Then the runner gets tremendous jump and steals 3b on him and later comes home when Chapman throws a wild pitch.

    • Carstie Clausen's avatar Carstie Clausen said, on July 31, 2016 at 10:45 am

Neither the Nats nor the Mutts particularly scare me, though both have some good players. Now with the Chapman meltdown resulting in Arrieta’s loss, the Cubs look a bit vulnerable as well. It is possible that SF has just exited their most daunting seasonal crisis. We will know more in a few hours. If Cain can simply pitch like a decent #5 today i think our offense and bullies will be up to the task.

…just to chime in on the Matt Kemp/Padre talk, when you factor in the cash the Pads sent to the Braves and the Dodgers financial obligations on BOTH of those contracts, the Pads end up saving about $7 million total by dumping Kemp. Not the huge savings I initially assumed they would be realizing, but I guess they really wanted to unload him due to his lethargic attitude (which I saw in person the other day) and simply to open up a spot for one of their young players and to not have to deal with Kemp being a distraction riding the bench. Its gonna be ugly at Petco for a while, but I give them credit for fully committing to rebuilding and going young. For some odd reason, it actually makes me want to catch a few more of their games live just to be there on the ground floor of what they are doing and to check out their young guys.
@ Blade re Wil Myers….yes, good player. I also think he has matured a bit this year. In interviews I saw with him last year, he kind of came off as a meathead who reminded me of Nook LaLoosh (kind of looks like him too) and I didn’t always like his body language on the field. Seems like this year he has grown up a bit and is ready to be the face of the franchise. The Pads did pay dearly to get him though, giving up several prospects including highly regarded pitching prospect Joe Ross (Tyson’s brother–from Oakland) and this kid Trea Turner playing against us for the Nats who looks to have really sparked their team.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 31, 2016 at 11:24 am

Miller to Cleveland. I like the “win now” attitude of Cleveland, whom are one of my closet favorite teams, along with Pittsburgh, when the Giants are out of the running. If the Giants fail to win it all this year, I will be rooting for Cleveland. I wish they could have pulled that deal for Lucroy too, but Lucroy apparently invoked his “no trade” contract clause. Anyone know why?

    • wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on July 31, 2016 at 12:04 pm

Yeah I don’t get it. Cleveland is in a pennant race and as far as cities go, I would take Cleveland over Milwaukee in a heartbeat. Downtown Cleveland is actually really nice (any major city with a nice casino downtown is tops in my book). It cleaned up well. Nice suburbs too, with some great golf courses.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 31, 2016 at 12:11 pm

        I just came across this:

“Lucroy had told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel this offseason that he wanted to play for a contender.

“I want to win and I don’t see us winning in the foreseeable future. I want to go to a World Series. That’s what all players want. Rebuilding is not a lot of fun for any veteran guy,” he said.

Yet, according to multiple reports, Lucroy had asked the Indians to remove the option year in 2017 from his contract, making him a free agent this season, a request that was denied by Cleveland. According to USA Today, another hurdle was that the Indians would not guarantee Lucroy would be their starting catcher next season.”

He either wants to win or he doesn’t. He shouldn’t be spouting bullshit about winning, unless he really wants to win . . . uhh, not win with (personal) conditions.

Heard on radio that next year is last year of Lucroy’s deal. He figures he won’t get as much playing time when the regular catcher comes back, so he won’t be able to sell himself for a big payday as FA beginning 2018. So, he asked Cleveland for an extension as a condition of him OKing the deal. They refused. It’s always about the money…

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 31, 2016 at 12:32 pm

he’s a good hitter and with chance to DH in the AL would put up nice numbers. He has a very team friendly contract for next year. Tribe, a team on his no trade list to start with, wouldn’t meet his demands to change that, so no dice. I say good for him.
Plus he can still be traded elsewhere, likely to a contender (mets a possibility apparently).

  16. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 31, 2016 at 12:19 pm

Blanco has come up small in too many ABs for me, and slumped too long over the years when asked to play more than here and there. Sure, Blanco will stay the rest of the season, and I hope he catches the last out of another WS win for the Gyros. But, his leather isn’t THAT good to keep him around, witness his occasional throwing gaffes — he’s aging and needs to be gone next year to upgrade this outfield’s offensive output…

    • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on July 31, 2016 at 12:29 pm

Looking toward next year, LF is a puzzle – unless they pull off a shocker for Bruce or spend a fortune for Cesedes. Blanco could still be brought back as a cheaper, more versatile alternative to Pagan…

Time for salut to ride his caballo off into the sunset next year so K and K can proclaim a good Giant.
When he was going well his game was enjoyable, but no more. 3 error night in LF, unable to see the WP would allow him to score, too many 0-fers at top of LU for aging $10 mil player.

I don’t want either back, but if I had to choose to stay for a season, it’s Pagan. He gives the offense energy, Blanco sucks it away…

I am with Tom on this one. Give me Pagan all day every day over Blanco. I said it numerous times in the past few days when someone had to go to make room or Panik and Pence. IMO, Blanco should have been DFA’d. I would have kept Pena or Parker around, instead.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 31, 2016 at 12:38 pm

I think a full year of Mac and Parker upgrades the offensive output by a lot. Small sample size this year, but both have some pop and appear to gaining an idea of what to swing at and what to let go.

The thing about Blanco is his ability to play CF, which is what seems like problem spot to me. Parker has been there a couple times only, so one of the backups needs to be able to play CF…unless they figure Nunez could do that. I’m really interested to see what they do with him rest of the season, and if it means someone gets moved to get him in the LU somewhere full time.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 31, 2016 at 12:44 pm

Agreed. CF has been a problem with no really good LT solution since Darren Lewis. Blanco has the leather and speed for it, but the bat is just way too spotty for me. This team needs OF power and production. I’ve no clue whether Mac or Parker can provide consistency, but they need to find out. Those two are not spring chickens…

Nice call by mrsprtdude on the Span bunt medico quandary. The Giants spin the medico PR top with the best of them. The local scribes never dig into the medical stuff, so the Giants just throw that stuff out with iimpunity. Whatever. If they figured Span needed a mental break because he’s been tepid, at best, at the plate, that’s fine with me. The guy has been average, not a difference maker. With Nunes now here, we can see how comatose Span has been. I’d put Nunes out in CF when he’s not spelling the IF guys. The guy has and can play OF. Nothing like a shot of new blood to rile things up. Anyway, with Cain and Gio G going today, this game figures to be a bit of a slugfestt. I’m hoping Cain can keep the HRs down to only one before Bochy pulls him. 5-inning rule applies, unless SF has a huge lead. Cain is the latest Zito contract albatross, until he proves otherwise. He’s going for win 100 today…

The Dodgers’ Norris had to leave in the first inning. Looked like a quad issue to me. The manager and trainer came out to the mound, and Norris talked them into letting him stay in, and he faced one more batter, then had to come out. It shows how hard it can be to deal with injured players. They’ll often just flat-out lie about how they’re feeling. A player can sense the DL looming over their head, and they want to try to play through something, and see if they can somehow get over it.

Nunez’ speed is giving Bochy some creativity. Despite that F up, I like it. This trade looks really good so far. Congrats to Sabevans for picking this guy up. A Scutaro redux would be great…

  30. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 31, 2016 at 2:15 pm

Pagan was the runner on 1b. There’s 2 outs, so Posey can’t swing at any old pitch and ground out to 2b or SS to protect a runner.
If you run you have to make it or the inning is over. That’s NOT on bochy!

Posey singled off this guy first time up and now he doubles. You can’t end an inning like that.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 31, 2016 at 2:28 pm

Are you saying Pagan didn’t try? The tag was close, and a near perfect throw by the catcher. We need to hear from Bochy after the game to see what was called or not called on that play. You can’t guarantee a steal. I tend to think GHead is right seeing the replay, Posey probably missed a sign, the right side of the IF was open because the 2d sacker moved to take the throw, and Posey is tops at going the other way. A missed sign makes the most sense — Baggs is saying that on his twitter…

      • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on July 31, 2016 at 2:35 pm

Posey immediately put his head down almost in a sense of shame…knowing he f’d up..

    • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on July 31, 2016 at 2:37 pm

But if it is a hit and run, the timing typically gets screwed up for the catcher to at least make that throw harder…

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 31, 2016 at 2:37 pm

Exactly. Bochy is smartening up with handling Cain and Peavy. Pen is going to get taxed, but there’s Sept callups. What else can be said if these two guys can only go 5 tops every start?…

With Mejia now with the Twins it’s pretty much a no-brainer. Ty Blach is the front man at Sacramento. Last i checked his ERA was in the respectable 3.60’s while leading the PCL in wins with 11.
