A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Paging Cody Ross……

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 16, 2016

Maybe it’s time for Sabes to pull one of his fake-out, block-another-team, accidental score dumpster pick ups. Waive everyone. Claim everyone. This has become nearly impossible to watch.

The infuriating thing is that there really are no moves to make. Unless Cory Gearrin coming back gets your engine going. The outfield is Pagan, Span and Pence and they aren’t going anywhere. You see any open spots in the infield? I hear our catcher spot is locked up.

My idea for bringing Gearrin back is to DL this fucking lefty reliever with some sort of vaginal defect and see what happens with subtraction.

Other than that, I don’t see anything else that can be done to stop this long, slow slide to second place……

Maybe I’ve missed it, but have any of our lame beat writers asked Bochy about R-Kelly? At this point, I think the only way we get Kelly removed is if he takes out a gun and shoots the runner as he rounds third. Even then…….

Off Topic . . . Just want to throw out some love to Willie and LJ. I think both of you provide real good commentary here and I want to continue to see your insightful posts. This is what I don’t like and I’ll preface my comment by saying I have been guilty of this too . . . LJ, you used words such as “feeble” and “irrevleant” which Willie did not appreciate. I know I wouldn’t be too happy about reading those words connected to my comments. Consequently, I understand why Willie responded the way he did. Again, I have been guilty of the same thing in the past. When it’s been brought to my attention, I hope I did the right thing and said, “I was wrong and will try to do better.”

In any event, I love both of you guys and I hope you both can get past this. I think a few of us have been on edge since this losing streak started (me included); and hopefully, our frustration is directed at the games, not at fellow Flappers.

    Out.

Yeah, I got a little snippy with Edd yesterday. Sorry bout that. It IS frustrating as hell to watch this continual stagger and crawl toward some undetermined fate.

But the ONE thing they can do something about is Kelly. He has caused a lot of harm and the players are completely baffled in any given situation as to what to do. Pence getting picked off 3rd is a prime example. Kelly sent him and then stopped him, and he was hung out to dry. Belt on the first wild pitch didn’t get a signal from Kelly. Does he score on the 2nd wild pitch? Probably not, but who knows now?

Brown is slow, and the LFer has a good arm, AND was in pretty shallow. Sure, it was a bang bang play, but they made it. And we are left weith 5 hits and 3 walks n the first 3 innings and 1 run. Or whatever the fuck it was.

Te mantra for this team is wasted opportunities.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on August 16, 2016 at 9:17 am

And one out when he sent Brown, with Pagan, one of the Giants better hitters this season, coming up. Kelly doesn’t seem to put the factors together in a given situation very well.
I just think some people have a knack for coaching third and some don’t. And, at this late date, it’s clear Kelly doesn’t and, I guess, never will. I would put Dunston there, and give Kelly the replay role. Yeah, it’s embarrassing, for a moment, for Kelly. But only for a moment. And I betcha Kelly would be relieved to not be coaching third anymore. I bet he never really wanted to do it in the first place.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 16, 2016 at 9:44 am

at this level you have to make quick decision, in or out. it just seems beyond Kelly, he waits too long because he is unsure or is too conservative. Not running on Ben revere, just mind boggling.
I think most good baserunners have a pretty good idea right away if they can take extra base or not.
But as a coach Kelly can’t figure it out.

I heard on morning radio that our new hurler Moore has pitched 18 innings in 3 starts, with 14 walks. WTF? And, what’s with Posey? Is the guy really hurt — they say he has a back issue. In this free fall he’s been among the culprits in not hitting to salary level. The whole team seems in disarray in virtually all aspects of the game. I’m wondering again if there isn’t something major going on in the clubhouse. I have no idea, but you have to wonder. And, this Kelly deal — I also heard on radio that many thought Kelly gave Pence the go sign, and Pence decided belatedly to ignore the go, and stopped. If that’s the case, no bueno. You have to trust the coach, otherwise he’s not useful…

On one hand, I totally agree with Blade’s post that kicked off the thread. The other side of that is that this place used to be far more chippy. It’s fine to disagree here, it’s almost encouraged. I think for the most part it’s stayed civil but as a couple of you guys have noted, all this losing is getting old. And when Flappers start calling out players who some of us back and vice versa that just kinda adds to the irritation. We are all Giants fans, no reason to turn on each other during this down time.

There are 14 games left in August with 3 against the dodgers. With a half game lead in the division, waiting for rosters to expand in September may be too little too late. This club is floundering worse than a Trump Presidential campaign.

  6. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 16, 2016 at 9:49 am

I must be crazy. I’m thinking seriously about a Giants lefty stack (Panik, Crawford, and Denard) against this guy Taillon, whom I never heard of, but sounds like the second coming of Cy Young.

Most recently, Taillon (3-2) dealt eight scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out four Padres in Thursday’s win. Per DFS, “He’s making his 10th big league start, Taillon was efficient and in control throughout the afternoon while lowering his ERA to 2.85 — his best mark since June 14. The right-hander added a few more changeups to his usual mix of fastballs and curveballs on Thursday, keeping the Padres off balance and adding new wrinkles to his game. Taillon, who hadn’t thrown more than 95 pitches in any of his first eight MLB starts, was pumping his fastball in the mid-90s during eighth inning of his second 100-plus pitch performance. The rookie continues to pitch with poise and polish beyond his years, and by now, Taillon should be off the wire in almost every mixed league.”

Like I said, I’m only thinking about a LU with Giants. The contrarian view rarely works for me. Sigh.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 16, 2016 at 9:53 am

I only consider Giant stacks when they’re on the road. But hey if you’re right you’ll be alone at the top of the mountain. GL!

  7. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 16, 2016 at 9:54 am

What is killing me is the lack of situational awareness from everyone. Panik gets walked with the bases chucked so the next 2 guys swing at the first pitches they see and kill the inning. Pence gets a 2-0 count with runners on 2nd and 3rd and dribbles a pitch 1′ outside weakly to 1st. Kelly just about every fucking play. Even Bochy has gotten into the act. Cueto staying too long and giving up 2 bombs late. Every Peavy/Smarge start.

And we have this annoying habit of being on everyone else’s highlight reel for defensive gems.

    • Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on August 16, 2016 at 10:24 am

Another one from Pence last night: With first and second no out In the 7th vs. a Pirates reliever who’s a bit wild and just walked the previous batter, Pence flails away at the first pitch that was nowhere near a strike and then strikes out.

  8. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 16, 2016 at 10:04 am

Zumiee called it last night. For some inexplicable reason it seems like Kelly isn’t considering all details of a situation. Who is throwing, who is running. I mean, this is just basic shit. It’s mind boggling that someone doing his job like this ever even got the job in the first place. Was there any interview process at all? Or just green light him over there cause he played ball once? Regardless, it is time to GO. And all we hear out of the beat writers on this is crickets.

Roberto Kelly as well as 1st base coach Bill Hayes are both guys that seemed pretty happy with their previous gigs as 1st base coach and bullpen coach or whatever the hell Hayes was doing previously when he wasn’t shotgunning PBRs. Who knows why Bochy made the decision to promote them but base running hasn’t been quite as good since. Kelly in particular positions himself poorly and just generally does strange things around the bag. Come on though fellas, this is little league stuff we’re contemplating. If Bochy is really upset then why not stick Wotus in the 3b coaching box? He was originally a soccer coach wasn’t he? They know about running and distance and stuff.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 16, 2016 at 11:18 am

Two options: one, Kelly himself offers to resign 3b job, Bochy accepts gives kudos to all for their fine work and shuffles people around.
Two, Kelly is “asked” to do this, gratefully accepts, results being same.

There is a decent defense of Kelly over at the McCovey Chron. It’s an interesting breakdown that puts Kelly in the top tier of 3rd base coaches.

Flav, just give Pagan another week and he will likely have something ailing him. Adding any OF batter that knock something out of the park would be helpful to have off the bench or as a fill in starter.

There was something on Baggs blog couple days ago. I guess after Casilla meltdown Sunday a reporter named Carmen Kiew asked Bochy postgame question about pen he didn’t care for and apparently was visibly upset about.
If you notice he gave the “hiccup” speech and defended how well they had done recently, both Strick and Casilla and pen in general. Which was factually true, before Sunday.

iirc Lurie on radio mentioned this gal’s name…so who is she? Kinda odd that she seems to stand out doing something like that.

She goes to pressers now and asks tough questions that piss Bochy off? I didn’t realize she was rolling like that these days. Good for her.

I did not make it to stay awake for the game (San Dog…shot a respectable 93 on normal blue tees rating 72.5 and slope 139, so fairly tough and long 6770 yards, that is the championship length at my own home course
😦 and dog hot 90+ degrees) so watched the game this morning and was disappointing to see Moore have his issues during his second time through the lineup and especially after how smooth the first three went and with the lead. For a home debut that kind of sucked…

And of course we continue to be snake bit…that catch McCutchen made saved two runs and completely changes the game. He is a guy I would love to pursue the next trade deadline where I could see the Pirates moving him if they are out of the running. He is a guy worth overpaying for a short term remainder of contract type of deal…

Yeah, anyone else at 3rd. I really don’t see how anyone can defend Kelly. Flan was wild and crazy and he ran around like a crazed kindegartner, but he was about 95% right on his calls. I know it’s like saying umpires are right 98% of the time, though. That is because 98% of the calls are fucking obvious.

But Kelly isn’t doing the job. He’s missing badly on the tough plays.

Before you go Pawlie…have a book recommendation for you and others…

My new favorite author Dan Simmons released a book I missed last year.  He wrote the masterful The Terror based on the true story about the British exploration of trying to find the northwest passage through the Arctic Circle and being stuck in ice for 3 years and no survivors ever to be found again.  So his fiction is often based on real historical situations and characters, like his book Droid where Charles Dickens is a main character.

New book named The Fifth Heart where the American author and contemplating suicide Henry James comes across a detective in Paris named Sherlock Holmes impersonating a Norwegian Explorer.  The story proceeds as they travel to DC to investigate the possible murder of true person Clara Adam’s, who was presumed to have committed suicide…just a great writer…

    • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on August 16, 2016 at 1:00 pm

If Schilling asked me for my advice I would say woah big boy. Let’s run for a lower office first like for a House seat and go from there…but Schilling is well liked up there. And if you look at Elizabeth Warren’s numbers when she ran in a very strong Democratic presidential year, she actually produced 220,000 less votes than what Obama pulled in and that 220,000 was roughly her margin of victory over Scott Brown.

With a Hillary presidency, 2018 will likely be a more Republican year and a lower turnout. Schilling could end up being more popular than Scott Brown and he ended up winning a special election with low turnout…I actually would personally like to see Schilling run against that gas bag;)

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 16, 2016 at 1:12 pm

The only reason Brown made it close was because he isn’t an extremist. Boston voters like Warren much more than when she initially ran. Again, she’ll have no problem beating Schilling.

Dude is a failure as a businessman too (his video game software company went belly up). However, there is another career for him . . . My advice to him, would be to contact Pete Rose and see how to get into an autograph gig, e.g., he can autograph people’s socks in Vegas or Cooperstown.

Kudos to the Olympic runner that won by diving across the finish line. I’ve heard so many baseball pundits over the years say that diving into firstbase doesn’t work because you never see a sprinter diving over the finish line. That’s only because they don’t want to hit the hard surface of the track, in general.
That doesn’t mean I’m a fan of diving into firstbase. The risk of injury is very high.

The umps suck, our manager is going senile, our clubhouse is not in lock step, Smarge sucks more than we had hoped, Pence is swinging at shit way outside, Buster’s back is hurting, the bullpen has a chronic case of the hiccups, and Joe Nathan is back. Hey, no problem, we got this! heehee

      • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on August 16, 2016 at 8:27 pm

        That would be perfect Bozo!
Throw in a return of Brett Tomko for a poker game with AJ Perjerkoff as well, they were tight teammates NOT!!

lulz… Can add a blind 3rd base coach with denmentia and a 1st base coach with gait/ shingles, but hey we’re good right?

    Are we done scoring?

If the shittiest hitter in the history of baseball gets a dying quail hit, Mike Krukow would say : “Oh he’s Locked in now”

it’s annoying. When we are losing, nearly everything K/K do annoys me. They are showing more camera shots of people eating food lately. That’s gotta be in direct correlation to the team hitting the skids. The only thing I hate more than “I wanna get that I wanna get that I wanna get that” is hearing about who’s in the sqqqqquuuuaaaat every night.

I’m telling you, I love being able to tune in the opponents broadcasters every night. Gives me some variety and spares me from listening to those knuckleheads every night.

Nowadays, since the Giants rarely score and win about once a week, I’m getting off on good defensive plays…

2 blown calls by the umps.

  62. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on August 16, 2016 at 8:55 pm

I’ve never heard of that one before?
A pop up on the infield on the line which appeared to be fair , is not reviewable?? Only if it’s in the OF??? WTF???

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on August 16, 2016 at 9:05 pm

any such call in front of the IF umps is theirs to botch; beyond, down the OF lines, reviewable

SQUAT, grab some pine meat — I sort of like those worn out Krukow tropes. Synechdoche is his fuckin forte. Metaphor’s beyond him, however. Tonight he tried to praise some hard-throwing pitchers and referred to their arms as “lightning rods.” Bolt that one to the hurler and let it go.

McCutchen has been more or less putrid this season, but you throw one right down the middle of his wheelhouse and he’s going to smack it for a triple. Duh.

    • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on August 16, 2016 at 9:16 pm

I’d still take him next season on a trade deadline deal. He is a free agent in 2018…
