A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Ignition Time

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 23, 2016

I’m not even going to look at the O/U number and go out on a limb and say take the under tonight.

This is when guys like Nunie, Moore and that fucking lefty reliever need to step up and realize they aren’t playing meaningless baseball anymore.

If a Giants/Dodgers series doesn’t get these guys going I am concerned that nothing will.

Here’s the deal: I don’t think the Dodgers are very good. Their starting pitching sucks. If we pitch them into submission, which is totally possible, I will be very disappointed if we don’t score enough runs to win at least 2 of these games.

It is going to be too long of a nervous wait before first pitch.. would love a Marichal level fight (bats not needed) and someone taking out Utley…who on our team would be good in a street fight…Bum for one but we need Mac Williamson Stat Pronto. He looks like he could do some bar fight damage…

Utley is doubtful to play tonight GH. Kendrick, a right handed hitter, has the platoon advantage against MadBum.

I think the Giants didn’t do much against Maeda before, and Bumgarner hasn’t exactly tamed the Dodgers this season, but I would be very surprised if MadBum doesn’t carry the team in the opener. Also think Cueto follows up well. 2 out of 3, at least, and the team is back on track for a good stretch run.

Sportsdude, in re to your post on the last thread, I go to the chiropractor when my back goes out, not all the time. I try to take fairly good care of myself as far as keeping my back in line. I have gone years without having problems. But things like car accidents and garbage cans falling on me, or even a shitty golf swing have thrown it out of whack. IOW I do my own self-maintenance for the most part. I’ll go a like 4 times a year just to keep things straight now because it seems to be getting easier and easier to set it off. I can usually head off a bigger problem with increased stretching and icing and things like that, but sometimes it goes out really bad. Like now.

PT right now would kill me. Anyhow, here’s my new theme song . . .

    • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on August 23, 2016 at 9:38 am

Chuck…I totally threw my back out this morning after two days of yard work. Drove my car and once I stepped out, my lower back just went. If it is a muscle thing, can a chiropractor do much for it??? I have not hurt my back in years and used to strain it with golf as well..

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 23, 2016 at 10:35 am

Ice the shit out of it for 1/2 an hour at a time. On and off. If it’s strictly muscles, ibuprofen works pretty good. 800 mg every 4 hours. Unless you want to go for the harder shit. Which usually doesn’t work for me, but the toradol injection I got on Sunday really helped. Kind of a last-gasp thing though.

My prob is when my back goes out, I get nerve problems as well as the muscle problems.

      • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on August 23, 2016 at 11:53 am

        Thanks Chuck…I almost can’t stand:(

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on August 23, 2016 at 12:56 pm

If it is truly muscle and not structural, then I suggest heat, followed by stretching the muscles out, and then icing it afterwards. My regular doc and my chiropractor both prescribe to this when you pull a muscle.

And win or lose first 2, Moore (and Smith) is here for a reason. Dodgers LU is very LH heavy—control these guys and keep their stuff in the park, Giants should be OK. Moore might get 3 starts against them down the stretch, needs to establish what he can do, besides walking guys.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 23, 2016 at 8:52 am

Right. Moore either needs to trust his stuff (and his defense) more, or rethink his shit. He can’t keep getting up to 95 pitches by the 5th inning.

  9. willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 23, 2016 at 8:49 am

Pawlie mentions the gal was at the PH with Lurie and gang. The profile pic of her is very nice; in another one of her gifs she looks um, a little stockier.
If posting gifs non stop btw twitter and snapchat is what your life is about, OK, knock yourself out.

I’d like to know Flap opinion on Lurie. I rarely catch much of his shtick, 10-15 minutes at a time maybe on weekends. He seems like nice guy, very patient with callers and I admire what he does, but…
I rarely agree with very much of what he says and advocates. He trots a simple stat (Giants aren’t hitting with RISP) and makes pat assumptions off of it that aren’t really supported.
I think every Flap guy here has smarter baseball mind.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 23, 2016 at 8:57 am

I think Lurie has gotten very good. He’s got his faults but all in all I think he manages idiot callers as good as possible. Carmen is who she is, a homer chick who overvalues her feelings about individual players.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on August 23, 2016 at 12:59 pm

I like listening to Lurie. Many times on the weekends I will be out running around and will have the radio on and listen to his pre-game. I like his feelings about, and knowledge of the game, and agree with others, that the players (past and present) seem relaxed and always seem to have a good chat with him.

Hey Charlie – sorry to hear about your back, brother. I have a similar situation (no herniated discs in the lower back), but my c5 and c6 discs in my neck are herniated. Like you, once in a blue moon, I have a SERIOUS issue with my lower back…sounds exactly like what you described. I have a chiro that I used for about 30 years, same as you, and I have also used acupuncture, and highly recommend it, too. I did the physical therapy thing during the period when I was ultimately diagnosed with the herniated discs in my neck. It did nothing for me. I ended up getting a spinal epidural for my neck. Two shots about a couple of months apart, and I have been pain free for about 10 years now.

Good luck my friend. Take care and get well, as I want to buy you a beer, whiskey, or all the above in Denver.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 23, 2016 at 9:31 am

Thanks, Chuck. getting old is a bitch.Yeah, the disk between L4 and L5 is pretty messed up. Which leads to most of the crap I’m dealing with.

PT fucked me up when I was having shoulder problems. The doc wouldn’t let me get an MRI and instead told me to do PT. Once I got the MRI done they said I needed surgery. Torn labrum, frayed tendon, torn rotator cuff. The surgeon said ‘why did you wait so long?’ I said I was doing PT. He said all you’ve been doing for the last year is tearing your shoulder up more.

Mind you this is no indictment of PT, just that the fucking for profit medical system at the time didn’t sdvocate for doing ‘unnecessary’ MRIs. So I got fucked. Funny thing is, I fucked that shoulder up again and I need surgery. My wonderful coverage means I’ll likely have to pay close to $4,000. And that’s WITH coverage. My shitty ins 10 years ago made me pat around $450. If I ever get really sick, there’s no reason to bankrupt every one around me as I’m not a vet or indigent. My family would be wiped out.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on August 23, 2016 at 10:45 am

Yes, while they were trying to diagnose the herniated disks in my neck, I too was on a long PT routine, while they were running nerve conductivity tests, etc. FINALLY they said, well, maybe we should do an MRI. Once the herniated discs were found, I was like “and why the fuck did you dickwads wait for a fucking year to run the MRI!?” The fucking medical community is such a damn sham.

Anyway, truly wishing you comfort and a quick recovery. First beer at Sherpaville on Sept. 7th is on me brother! Shots included if you wish!

I think Lurie is at his best when he is interviewing retired players. He’s great at getting them to feel comfortable, and it becomes a real conversation. I think the retired players feel like, hey, he’s really interested in hearing what I have to say, and they go into more depth in their stories.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on August 23, 2016 at 9:24 am

And he does a good job interviewing current players, too. He gets them into conversations where the players stop talking in cliches and have an actual conversation.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on August 23, 2016 at 9:26 am

Lurie is not a reporter, and he has such a relaxing tone to his approach, that the players realized that Lurie is not going after “gotcha” moments, and they just open up a little more and show more of their personality and humor, if they have a good sense of humor.

    Keys to the series..
-Bum needs to dig us a hole to crawl out of
-That it’s really true when Kuip says that Pancho Gonzales is at the plate
-Cueto doesn’t let the Doggers “quick hit” him
-Belt has to strike out less than 9 times
-Moore has to have command *or* control. We’re not picky, either one will do.
-And the most important key- Duffy has to have a big series

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on August 23, 2016 at 9:54 am

when Pagan was out for a while last year Kuip routinely mixed up him and Blanco.
Never I thought I’d say this after last year, but I’m hoping Pagan can be back in the LU.

This Bum LU stinks and especially tonight, going against MadBum. Best hitters Seager, Gonzalez and Reddick, are all lefties. Utley will probably sit and make way for Kendrick, so that leaves Pederson, Turner, and Grandal as the only players having a platoon advantage over MadBum. Meh.

Conversely, I am looking for our players to rake against Maeda, despite his stellar numbers. He hasn’t seen many teams that do NOT strike out like the Giants. See what’s what tonight . . .

However, how many of you knew that a 12 year old is running Trump’s campaign operations in one of Colorado’s most populous counties – Jefferson? I actually live in this county, so I was a bit surprised myself by this news. Hilarious.

Trump also cancelled public events in Colorado, Nevada and Oregon…Oregon made no sense to schedule anything but may mean they are writing off Colorado and Nevada and putting all their eggs in the Ohio, NC, Florida and PA basket. Which means if they don’t hit all four he can’t win…one VA poll has her up 18 in Virginia…so my guess is they are going to write off Virginia as well…unless there is some provable monetary payoff in this latest batch of emails, President Hillary is a certainty. but you are assuming your son would like or play baseball…….mine didn’t and doesn’t but no regrets at all…at his son’s pre-K graduation, they announced that when my grandson grows up, he wants to be a …..a…..DAD.

I told my son that was an awesome testament to him. I’m not sure he realized what a compliment it was.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 23, 2016 at 6:23 pm

on a personal note, I have never wanted a son. I think boys are just a bunch of shitheads, lol. Most of them anyway. Girls are just nicer and less intense and the fact that Katie is an up and coming volleyball player gives me the fix I need for competition (from a parenting standpoint). But watching these kids play in Williamsport is always such a gas for me. I guess I should have said “I wish I had a son who played in the LLWS.” lol

The expression on his face as he was about to meet his teammates at home plate was priceless. It was that *embarrassed excited* look and after 13 you slowly start to lose that look—Little Prince shit. Great book.

  42. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on August 23, 2016 at 6:44 pm

Yeah, keeping an injured Blanco over Parker makes no sense. Parker was getting better, even on defense. He was doing what they asked him to do, be more selective at the plate, and his on-base % had gone up. That move will never make sense.
Pinch-hitting Blanco over Williamson against the Red Sox with the bases loaded and one out makes even less sense now. And it made no sense at the time. It now makes negative sense.

It’s been 13 years and I still prefer girls to raise. The only thing I’m worried about is her going to parties and dipshits trying to fuck her and drug her and shit. I will follow her to those parties and bash them in the skull with Twin’s baseball bat if they try that shit…….

I said they can sleep on one side of the basement, girls on the other side and me right in the middle. That decided that. But she thought it would be perfectly normal to allow that…wake the fuck up daughter…

I think Chuck said something about a house cleaning after this season. Agree – especially so – if they don’t get to the playoffs or make little or no noise if they do make it.

Off the top of my head, this is what I would do:

    1. Eat Cains contract (via trade or release him).
    2. Say goodbye to Pagan unless he wants Blanco’s 4th OF role.
    3. Gold watch for Blanco (or trade him).
    4. Bring up Kelby Tomlinson and get rid of Adrianza.
    5. Bring up Parker and have him compete with Gorkeys . . . Better yet, trade for a bonafide outfielder.*
    6. Replace Lopez and Casilla (or trade for a closer and tell Casilla he’s the new 8th inning guy).

    * Seriously consider Posey at 1st, Belt to the OF and Brown to catcher.
